PASSION SUNDAY
(Lent 5)
13 March 2016
Sunday 13 March 2016: THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT: PASSION SUNDAY
Collect
Most merciful God, who by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ
delivered and saved the world: grant that by faith in him who suffered on the cross we
may triumph in the power of his victory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who
is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.
Amen
A reading from Isaiah Isaiah 43. 16 – 21
Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who
brings out chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they
are extinguished, quenched like a wick: Do not remember the former things, or
consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you
not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. The wild
animals will honour me, the jackals and the ostriches; for I give water in the
wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give drink to my chosen people, the people whom I
formed for myself so that they might declare my praise.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
Psalm 126
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage it seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter, on our lips there were songs.
The heathen themselves said: "What marvels the Lord worked for them!"
What marvels the Lord worked for us; indeed, we were glad!
Deliver us, O Lord from our bondage as streams in dry land.
Those who are sowing in tears will sing when they reap.
They go out, they go out full of tears, carrying seed for the sowing;
They come back, they come back, full of song carrying their sheaves.
A reading from St Paul’s letter to the Philippians Philippians 3.4b – 14
If anyone else has reason to be confident in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the
eighth day, a member of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew born
of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to
righteousness under the law, blameless. Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to
regard as loss because of Christ. More than that, I regard everything as loss because of
the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the
loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be
found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one
that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. I want
to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by
becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the
dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I
press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do
not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies
behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on towards the goal for the
prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
This is the word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
All join in singing the GOSPEL ACCLAMATION after the Choir:
Listen to the Gospel of Christ according to Saint John John 12. 1 – 8
Glory to you, O Lord.
Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he
had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and
Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume
made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was
filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the
one who was about to betray him), said, ‘Why was this perfume not sold for three
hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?’(He said this not because he cared
about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to
steal what was put into it.)Jesus said, ‘Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might
keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not
always have me.’
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
HYMNS AT THE 11AM
THE PROCESSIONAL HYMN
My song is love unknown,
My Saviour's love to me,
Love to the loveless shown,
That they might lovely be.
O, who am I ,
That for my sake
My Lord should take
Frail flesh, and die?
He came from his blest throne,
Salvation to bestow:
But men made strange, and none
The longed-for Christ would know.
But O, my Friend,
My Friend indeed,
Who at my need
His life did spend!
Sometimes they strew his way,
And his sweet praises sing;
Resounding all the day
Hosannas to their King.
Then "Crucify!"
Is all their breath,
And for his death
They thirst and cry.
They rise, and needs will have
My dear Lord made away;
A murderer they save,
The Prince of Life they slay.
Yet cheerful he
To suffering goes,
That he his foes
From thence might free.
Here might I stay and sing,
No story so divine;
Never was love, dear King,
Never was grief like thine!
This is my Friend,
In whose sweet praise
I all my days
Could gladly spend.
Words: Samuel Crossman (1624 – 83) Music: Love Unknown John Ireland (1879 – 1962)
OFFERTORY HYMN
Jesu, Lord of life and glory,
Bend from heaven thy gracious ear;
While our waiting souls adore thee,
Friend of helpless sinners, hear:
By thy mercy,
O deliver us, good Lord.
From the depth of nature's blindness,
From the hardening power of sin,
From all malice and unkindness,
From the pride that lurks within:
By thy mercy,
O deliver us, good Lord.
When temptation sorely presses,
In the day of Satan's power,
In our times of deep distresses,
In each dark and trying hour:
By thy mercy,
O deliver us, good Lord.
In the weary hours of sickness,
In the times of grief and pain,
When we feel our mortal weakness,
When the creature’s help is vain:
By thy mercy,
O deliver us, good Lord.
In the solemn hour of dying,
In the face of judgment day,
May our souls, on thee relying,
Find thee still our rock and stay:
By thy mercy,
O deliver us, good Lord.
Jesu, may thy promised blessing
Comfort to our souls afford;
May we now, they love possessing,
And at length our full reward,
Ever praise thee,
Good and ever-glorious Lord.
Words: John Cummins (1795 – 1867)
Music: Bryn Calfaria (William Owen 1813 – 93)
POST COMMUNION HYMN
When I survey the wondrous Cross,
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast
Save in the death of Christ my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
See from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down;
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?
His dying crimson like a robe,
Spreads o’er his body on the Tree;
Then am I dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.
Words: Isaac Watts (1674 – 1748)
Music: Rockingham (Adapted by Edward Miller 1731 – 1807)

Three Hours To Transform Over 100 Lives – Can You Help In Christian Aid Week? (15th-
21st May) -Morsheda’s home (a tin shack in Bangladesh) has been flooded many times and her
crops washed away. She does back-breaking work for 74p a day to save her family from
destitution. She lives in terror of the next flood.
Contrast Feroza, also in Bangladesh, whose home is raised 6 foot above the floods, who has a goat,
chickens and ducks. She has seeds to grow crops to feed her children and a wormery for
composting. She describes her life as changed in a way she could never have dreamed.
How did this happen? Thanks to Christian Aid’s Home Safety Package, costing only £250.00. Last
year we raised over £6,000 in our house-to-house collection. If we could do this again, we could
transform the lives of over 100 people.
But we can’t do it without collectors, and we urgently need more volunteers. It only takes about 3
hours – half an hour for delivery and the rest for a couple of visits to collect. It can be done in the
evening if that suits you best, and we will supply everything you need.
If you can help, please sign the list on the table at the back of the Cathedral or contact Sue Smith
on 02920569234 or at [email protected], or any other members of the team (details on the
table). Thank you!
