Classicus in Rome The Classicus Youth Chamber Choir, which regularly sings here in our parish church has just returned from a successful visit to Rome. Founded in 2002, the choir has travelled widely and won many pres-tigious competitions.

The 32 young choristers, members of the Maire Ledwith Butler School of Singing in Northumberland Road, sang at the Altar of the Cathedra in St. Pe-ter’s Basilica at the Solemn Mass for the Feast of of All Saints, November 1st, celebrated by Cardinal Angelo Comastri.

The next day the choir sang the Haydn Little Organ Mass, accompanied by Siobhan Kilkelly, at Mass in the Pontifical Irish College which was attended by Ireland’s new ambassador to the Holy See, Ms. Emma Madigan.

The whole trip went very smoothly and gave the young people a wonderful exposure to Italy’s capi-tal and culture. There were visits to the Roman Fo-rum, the Vatican, the Coliseum, Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Jewish Ghetto and the Vittorio Emanuele monument at Piazza Venezia as well as lots of time for shopping, pizza and ice cream, all under stunning blue skies and temperatures as high as 28 degrees. We look forward to welcoming Classicus Youth Chamber Choir back to St. Mary’s very soon along with other talented performers for our Special 175th Anniversary Candlelight Christ-mas Concert on Friday 19 December.
