Seventh Annual Tournament
Golden Circle plans to have its 7th
annual golf tournament on Friday,
April 29, 2016 at Willow Springs
Country Club. As in the past, the
event will be a captain’s choice Su-
perball tournament with a “shotgun”
start at 1 pm and a hot-dog lunch
served at noon.
The golf tournament is the club’s
largest fundraising event each year
and gets bigger and better each
year. It is also lots of fun for our
participants and our members.
The top two teams in the event will
receive prizes, as well as a prize for
the player closest to the pin and the
longest drive on designated holes.
Our club would like to thank all
those who have supported our event
in the past and looks forward to con-
ducting a fun and successful event
again this year.
Vickie Boykin, Golf Chairperson, en-
courages all members to get busy
recruiting teams and hole sponsors
and remember to ask for prizes from
local businesses and supporters.
GOLF TOURNAMENT ON APRIL 29th
Golden Circle hosted a fantastic
Valentine’s Party at the Free-
Will Baptist Children’s Home in
Middlesex on Saturday - Feb.
13th.
Thirty teenagers attended as
well as several staff members
and seventeen of our club
members.
The club provided wonderful
snacks and refreshments, con-
ducted a bingo game for awe-
some prizes and added a photo
booth for this year.
This was a rewarding and fun
event. More pictures on page 5

Golden Circle Donates to Wilson County Special Olympics
Fern Jones, who is from
the City of Wilson Parks
and Recreation Depart-
ment, spoke at our pro-
gram meeting in January.
Fern directs the annual
Special Olympics in Wil-
son County.
Fern shared many inter-
esting stories about some
of the participants of the
Special Olympics and the
upcoming schedule for
the games this year.
After learning of the many
opportunities to assist
with the Special Olym-
pics, the Golden Circle
club voted to donate $100
to Special Olympics. The
club is also considering
volunteering on the day of
the games at the registra-
tion tables and also help-
ing to serve food to the
participants.
We are looking forward to
the games & the children!

Christmas Party for Residents at Longleaf Neuro-Medical Center
Just when we thought we had hosted the best party ever at
Longleaf for Halloween, we somehow surpassed that party
at our Christmas party this year.
Once again, “Easy B” DJ was pumping out the nostalgic
dance music for the residents to enjoy, and many managed
to do a little dancing and moving from their walkers and-
wheel chairs, and a couple even got out on the dance floor
with some of our members. It was a fun day and a time
when these residents could go back in time to a happier
place.
A special thanks to Chairpersons Patsy Nobles and Ruth
Godwin for another great job of purchasing the food and
making all the goody bags (one for each resident).
CHRISTMAS PARTY FUN AT HOME OF JANICE LAMM
Thanks to Janice Lamm for hosting our club’s
Christmas party in her beautifully decorated
home in December. This year our members
brought gifts for the Mental Health Associa-
tion. Members also exchanged gifts of socks
with each other, which created much fun at the
party and here are a few pictures to show
that.

ELOISE SIDELINGER
We will miss our Optimist Sister, Eloise. She
could always be counted on to supply a joke
or a wise-crack when things became dull.
She was so proud of our club and so proud of
her husband, Wayne, who is a super-active
Optimist club member in the Evening Club.
We thank her for her years of contributions to
our club and her friendship to all of us.
~~~May you rest in Peace, Eloise~~~~
OPINION POLL - What is Your Opinion of Texting?
Page 7
Living The Creed
“Texting is the only way for me to contact my children, they typically do not answer the phone. Texting works with several
members of my family better, they can be long-winded when talking over the phone.” Diane Johnson
“I have an I Phone and use the speech to text feature. I am not really good with the key board. I do however like to talk
one-on-one with people. Overall, I like to text.” Dot Windham
“I text daily and often. I personally have little issue with texting.” Sara Robbins
“I text to keep informed with optimist meetings and information. I also find it easier to stay in touch with my grandchil-
dren through texting. They tend to not answer the phone. I do not favor texting when driving.” Brenda Carter
“I use texting to gain answers for minor questions and inquiries. It is an easy way to find out basic things. I do not text
when I drive.” Dana Morton
“Younger people find texting easy and like it. I personally find it difficult, and I much prefer talking over the phone.” Linda
Shepherd
“I use it to contact my children and grandchildren. I am okay with texting for certain situations.” Frances Buck
“I do not text, I think it is okay for those that like the feature.” Norma Duell
“Texting is a wonderful feature, I text several times over the course of the day. I receive and send texts to family and
friends often.” Brenda Farmer
“I prefer to text mostly over calling.” Blanca Guerra
“Texting is great as long as you do not use it when driving. Texting for me, overtakes the art of conversation between two
people. Face to face conversations seem to be a thing of the past. Couples text and seem to rarely communicate truly. Still,
I am okay with texting as long as you do so properly.” Vickie Boykin
“I like texting okay. I use the feature often throughout the day. It can be convenient for not interrupting people at work
as bad. I still cannot group text or send pictures.” Jeanette Ferrell
“I text all the time and love it!” Carol Collier
“I like texting and use it often.” Janice Lamm
“I do not think some things should be texted and are for phone and person to person only. I do and will text occasionally. I
text for quick messages and reminders to people.” Linda Watson
“I prefer to talk with people over the phone. I just installed a different plan to include texting on my phone. I am still
learning to text. I will text short messages and return texts to others.” Jean McLamb
“I do not text, I prefer to email from my computer.” Betsy Winborne
“I rarely text except to communicate with my daughters.” Celia Wise
“I enjoy texting. It is a good feature to have on your phone, if included in your plan. If you are not sure about interrupting
someone, I will text. I text for short messages and feel it is good if used correctly. Kathy Sandifer
“I very rarely text. I have an older phone and it is difficult to use the features. I do receive texts and try to return them.
Mostly I will call the person back when able.” Ann Cook
“I seldom initiate a text, but often return text messages. I prefer emailing or instant messages on Facebook. I think I am
reluctant to move to lots of texting, partly because my “smart phone” is smarter than me.” Angela Iwaniuk
GOLDEN CIRCLE QUARTERLY MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Page 8
Living The Creed
Kathy Sandifer
Congratulations to Kathy Sandifer who
received the Mental Health Association of
Wilson’s most prestigious honor by being
chosen as the 2016 recipient of the Fran-
ces Barshay Award.
The reasons Kathy was chosen for this
honor are that she rarely misses a meet-
ing, she is one of the first to sign up for
events and activities, and she is happy to
represent others when they cannot at-
tend. In other words, she is willingly ac-
tive.
These are the same characteristics that
she displays in the Golden Circle Opti-
mist Club as well. Kathy has been a loyal
and active member of our club since
January of 2011. She has served on nu-
merous committees, most notably as Pro-
gram Chair and Vice-President. She is
one of the first to donate her time, talents
and money when it is needed. Kathy will
become our club President when the new
Optimist year begins on October 1, 2016.
Kathy has helped to coordinate several
projects between Golden Circle and the
MHA. Some of these are our support of
Longleaf Neuro Medical Center and col-
lection of items for mental health clients.
When Kathy accepted her award, this is
what she said, “I feel very humbled, this
award is truly unexpected and I appreci-
ate it very much. I enjoy giving and trying
to help, but I know I do not do enough. I
suppose all of us could sacrifice a little
more to help others.”
We are so proud of Kathy and the contri-
butions she makes to our club, the MHA,
her church and her community.
Living The Creed
Several members of the Golden Circle were given a
tour of the Maynard Children’s Hospital in
Greenville on February 5, 2016.
Vickie Greco and Susan Sugg conducted our tour
and members were very impressed with the
“Aquatic Décor” as well as the state-of-the-art chil-
dren’s cancer section. Members also had the op-
portunity to meet the oncologist and Medical Chief
from the hospital.
Our club hopes to furnish a “Cancer Bell” for the
children’s hospital this year and we learned the
requirements for pursuing this project.
Our club was formed in 1987 and is an “all ladies” club. We strive to
live by the tenets of the Optimist Creed and promote optimism as a
way of life, inspire a respect for law, inspire an interest in good
government, and aid and encourage the development of youth, in
the belief that the giving of one’s self in service to others will ad-
vance the well -being of man, our community and even the world.
While performing community service projects and raising funds, we
also manage to have a good time and enjoy the fellowship of other
like-minded women. We invite other women to come join us!
The Golden Circle plans to submit an entry into the
Reel Optimism Video Contest for this year. This
year’s topic is “How My Best Brings Out the Best in
Others.”
We plan to use the creativity of our members and
photos from our projects to create a 3 minute video
which visually illustrates the topic of “How My Best
Brings Out the Best in Others.” Our video will need
to be submitted anytime between February 17th
and April 15th.
We are encouraging members to offer ideas for the
video and we will be asking some of our members
to help review the video before it is submitted.
Voting will be conducted between May 10 and
May 31st to determine the winning videos. The win-
ners will receive a $1,000 grant from Optimist In-
ternational, the OI Foundation, and the Canadian
Children’s Optimist Foundation .
The winning clubs and individuals will be invited to
on stage at the International Convention in Que-
bec to receive their awards.
Let’s make a great video which showcases our
club , our members, and our projects! After we
submit the video, we will be asking each of you to
vote for it on-line each day, which will improve our
chances of winning!
