Greetings,Is it just me or did this summer
go by way too fast? It seems like I was going to get bunches of stuff done this summer, now summer is gone and I got small bunches of stuff done. I did find out that most of you read my comments. I got lots of comments on the cover, and lots of good comments on our new look. Thanks!
I do believe I had one of the best steaks yet. I was in Monmouth, Illinois at Cerar’s Barnstormer Steakhouse. Brand X and I were dining with the crew and consignors of The Foundation Female Sale. Not being that hungry, I thought I would try an 8 oz filet rather than my usual ribeye. Here is how the Barnstormer explained their Filet Mignon, “center cut filet, char broiled expertly to melt-in-your mouth tenderness.” I would say that they nailed that explanation perfectly. As you can tell, I thought it was great, and likewise, the service and after hour beverages. A great time, thanks Barnstormer!
I made my usual trip to New York recently. These folks never
cease to amaze me. I think I must have gained ten pounds on their hospi-tality. It’s always nice to visit with the Cow Power folks in beautiful Dutches and Columbia Counties, New York. The scenery is unreal, the food is bet-ter and hospitality better yet.
Night 1: Round roast beef, mashed potatoes, sweet corn, apple pie and ice cream. Almost as good as mom’s Sunday roast - that great!!
Night 2: Smoked pork loin, German potato salad, sweet corn, cherry pie and ice cream - one deadly piece of pig.
Night 3: Filet beef tip steaks, steamed broccoli, fried potatoes, blue-berry pie and ice cream. A new all-time best steak. Prepared medium rare and so tender you could cut it with a butter knife. Unreal!!
Thanks to everybody in New York for your hospitality!!
Thanks for all your nice comments on Livestock Plus. We do appreciate your input. As always, please keep our service folks in your thoughts and prayers.

These Stainless Steel Combs (Guards) are most likely the neatest tool in the clipper bag. Whether you are advanced and want to save time and effort while still achieving the perfect results you desire, or if you are a begin-ner and want to give up when you get to the neck area, because you get nervous or afraid of leaving a “clipper ringworm mark.” These guards come in different
lengths so you can decide the depth you need. Then slip on the #10 or #30 Blade and slide right through the hair, with the utmost of ease
and leave the hair smooth looking, without leaving lines.CLINI-CLIP: Clipper Blade Disinfectant/Cleaner:
This solution effectively kills most bacteria, microorgan-isms, fungi and viruses in just 3 minutes or less (most in 30 seconds). Including: Ringworm (Trichophyton men-tagrophytes), Resistant bacteria Staph (MRSA) and VRE, Herpes Simplex II Virus (HSV @) G Strain, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV 1) (associated with AIDS), Influenza Virus Strain A2/Hong Kong, Mycobacterium bo-vis BCG (tuberculosis) (TB), Staphylococcus aureus ATCC
6538, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 15442, Salmonella choler-aesuis ATCC 10708, Trichophyton mentagrophytes ATCC 9533, Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV), Rhinovirus ATCC VR 286, Polio I Virus ATCC VR 58. Easy to use, just spray on. Clini-clip cleans and treats all in one step.

PRODUCTS WE BELIEVE IN
They work heads and tails above the competition. As you all know, we work with some great companies on
developing products that will improve the way we fit, clip, and show cattle. So we thought that we would share with everyone what we feel are superior products. This month’s focus is on Wahl Clipper Corporation in Sterling, Illinois. They are the world’s largest manu-facturer of electrical hair clippers with subsidiaries around the world. This traditional company was founded in 1919 and is still going strong! This article is just one in a series that we will be writing on.
WAHL Introduced the Storm II in the Fall of 2010. It is a small lightweight clipper, a mere 11.6 ounces and is perfectly balanced to decrease wrist fatigue and injury. It has a Powerful 2 speed rotary motor with speeds of 3100 and 4700 SPM’s. It has a solid drive and is extremely durable, runs quiet, and cool. Patented easy-to-replace drive tip system doesn’t require taking apart the clipper. It has a heavy duty 16’ power cord (the same cord used for the Milwaukee power tools)
and is extremely flexible, even in temperatures less than 30 degrees. This light weight Storm II clipper fits the contour of your hand and has a sleek design. It includes a #10 New and Improved Ultimate Competition Series Blade with 2.5x’s faster cutting performance. You can purchase this clipper through our website.
LISTER LEGEND This heavy duty professional clipper is perfect for cattle, horses,
sheep, goats, llamas, alpacas and hogs. The combination of lightweight ergonomic design, faster blade speed and more torque make easy work of any clipping or shear-
ing job. It comes with a fine blade set, a blade case and a carry case.LISTER STAR CLIPPER This small, lightweight,
durable corded clipper with wrist strap is designed for body clipping. The permanent magnet
motor ensures low noise and constant speed regardless of load. Advanced triangulated grip, full-width
clipper, replaceablefilter.Best of all, you DO NOT need to dip the
Star Clipper in kerosene for cleaning like you did with old, heavy clippers. It comes with 1 Lister A2F stainless steel blade.
These clippers can be used to clip horses, dogs, and cattle and to shear sheep.
Wahl X-Block and X-Blend blades we feel are very superior blades because the hair feeds through them and delivers a clean cut. The teeth are thinner and sharper then the competition’s and stay cooler with regular oiling and proper care. We recommend sending your blades, to be sharpened properly, to the Wahl company where they are inspected and sharpened on a beveled wheel (it is very im-portant to have them sharpened on a beveled wheel because of how they are designed). This will extend the life of your blades un-believably. Send the blades to: Wahl Service Center, 3001 N. Locust Street, Sterling, IL

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things
by evan Rayl
Can you believe planting crop without anyone in the tractor cab? I knew it was coming, but thought it would be a few years away. I had heard about a car driving people around in San Francisco of all places without anyone behind the steering wheel or operating the accelera-tor or brakes and not crashing. But now its happened, the Kinze Autonomy Project has allowed GPS controlled driverless machinery to plant row crops including making the turns at the end of the field with no human input. Sensors will stop the operation if one row quits dropping seeds or the tractor senses an obstruction. Then in an addi-tional demonstration a driverless tractor and grain cart pulled along the side of a moving combine where it was filled with grain and then driven along side a semi-trailer to unload, again without an operator. The Kinze system marries off the shelf components, including GPS, radar and video cameras, with custom software that allows the system to recognize and react to field obstructions. No timetable for com-mercialization or pricing was announced.
There are two ways to conquer and enslave a nation. One is by sword the other is by debt. President John Adams
I have been kept up to date about the drought in Texas by my feed salesman, who has a brother down in the heart of that area who is operating feed store. First, cattle owners were short of feed (good small bales of hay were selling for $20), then they were selling their cows, and now there is even a shortage of water for human consump-tion. The worst area covers a fourth of Arizona, over half of new Mexico, all of Texas, almost all of Oklahoma, a third of Kansas, and the west side of Louisiana. This area represents almost 20 percent of America. It sure seems like it will have a huge effect on the economy of our country as we go forward. I am told cows are so thin, northern buyers have had to stop their trucks for a week as soon as they got to where there was feed to build up the cows so they could make the trip the rest of the way to the north. What a sad situation. Those of us in the rest of this country should thank the Lord every day we are not affected by the drought as badly as those folks have been.
If you’re doing what everyone else is doing, you’ll never be better than average.
Tanks of frozen bull semen bound for a breeder in the state of Texas temporarily shut down a U. S. interstate highway in Nashville, Tennessee during the morning rush hour. A bus driver reported he had lost four propane sized canisters as he was making his way up the entrance ramp to the interstate highway. Once emergency fire department personnel discovered the canisters were non-toxic despite the light vapor they were emitting, they simply waited for the driver to return to pick up the tanks. Firemen thought the bull semen was stored in dry ice, but they were wrong on that count. The storage
material was liquid nitrogen that was more than three times as cold as dry ice and would have burned their skin if any of it touched them.
Lest you think this country is going completely to pot:88.5% of manufactured goods are made in America,8.8% from other countries, and 2.7% from China.
Wildlife officials in New York may ban captive boar hunts as they try to limit growing feral hog numbers. Feral hogs are becoming a huge problem in many states, especially those in the southern United States. The feral swine in New York are located in three counties in the central part of the state, in the general area where wild hog hunts had been held previously. These hogs have devastated crops, gardens and lawns with their rooting, wallowing and voracious foraging. In 2008 and 2009, 44 feral swine were captured, but hunters quit when state funding got short. Now officials are hoping small game hunt-ers will shoot them, any time of the year. Several states have banned the captive wild boar hunts as a first step in controlling the wild population. But in Michigan, ranch operators have lobbied the state legislature to overturn the state’s ban. While politicians argue, the ban has been postponed and won’t fully be in place for perhaps four more years. Other northern states concerned with the spread of feral hogs include Maryland, Ohio, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon and Pennsylvania.
Today’s mighty Oak is just yesterday’s nut that held its ground.
Australia’s best known Outback cattle ranch has been put on the market by the owner who blamed the country’s ban on livestock exports to Indonesia for destroying her livelihood. The 40,000 acre family owned property was made famous by matriarch Sara Henderson, who wrote about it in six books including her best selling autobiogra-phy, “From Strength to Strength,” published in 1993. The story told about the family's problems managing such a large remote ranch after her husband died. Her daughter, Marlee Ranacher, is selling because the Australian government is banning shipments to Indonesia because of animal cruelty concerns in Indonesia’s packing plants. Australia is the world’s largest exporter of livestock. Most northern Australia ranchers depend entirely on export of their animals because there are no large packing houses in their area.
Marry a woman with brains enough for two and you might come out even.
An east Texas man with a long history of cattle rustling in the past decade has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for stealing cattle from a Mississippi rancher. Forty four year old Carl Wade Curry of Athens was accused of stealing 400 head of cattle, but this was just the last straw. In the last five years, he had stolen 2,097 head of cattle worth nearly one million dollars. Curry had previously served 18 months of a 5 year prison term. At that time he still owed $680,000 in restitution. He has been called a serial cattle rustler going back to the late 1990s when he was convicted of bank fraud. “Curry tried to be a smooth talker, but he couldn’t seem to pull it off,” those who knew him said, “he just wasn’t capable. He’s right where he needs to be now.” n

$106,700 Total for 2011 Governor's Charity Steer Show
and Auctionby evan Rayl
$106,700 was the fifth highest total in the history of the 29th annual Iowa Governor’s Steer Show and Auction. The August 13th Show at the historic Pioneer Livestock Pavilion during the Iowa State Fair was hosted again by Governor Terry Branstad for the first time in several years now that he is again Governor of this great state.
Gov. Branstad hosted the show back in 1983 when it started and for the fol-lowing 15 years while he was Governor. Like many Iowan’s, the Ronald McDonald Houses in Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City are one of the Governor’s favorite charities. Since the beginning of the show, 1.9 million has been raised for the three houses. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill hospitalized children.
The Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association sponsor the annual steer show and auction. 23 steers were paraded before Judge John Hinners, assistant vice presi-dent of Industry Relations at the U.S. Meat Export Federation in Denver, Colorado. Champion of the show was “Ferdinand”, shown by Governor Branstad. He was sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association.
McDonald’s of Iowa City, Coralville, Williamsburg, Washington, and West Branch purchased the steer at the auction for $13,100, the fourth highest selling steer in the history of the auction. Kori Jeanne McLaughlin of Mediapolis raised the steer.
Brian Waddingham, executive director of the Coalition to Support Iowa’s Farmers, showed the Reserve Champion, “America Needs Farmers Angus.” The steer was sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and purchased by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation District #5 for $5,000 with an additional contribution by Rehder Farms of $500. Cole Lauterbach of Van Meter raised the steer.
Billy Huber, PRCA calf roping champion was voted by the crowd as “Peoples Choice.” ”Pat’s Choice,” shown by Huber was sponsored by Monroe County Cattlemen and Supporters and purchased by Monroe County Cattlemen and Supporters for $5,400. Brandi Jo Lawless of Albia raised the steer.
Lacy Stevenson, 2010 Iowa State Fair Queen, won the Showmanship Award. She was picked by special showmanship judge Brad Skaar from the Animal Science Department at Iowa State University. Stevenson’s steer, “Encore,” was sponsored by McDonald’s of Northwest Iowa and Dr Pepper. The steer was raised by Taylor Pudenz of Carroll and purchased by Hamilton County Camping Group for $4,000.
Emcees for the show were farm braoadcaster Bob Quinn, WHO Radio, and Andy Peterson, WMT Radio. A special guest appearance from Ronald McDonald kept the show lively by entertaining the crowd. The auctioneer for the auction was Phil Schooley from Bloomfield Livestock. Catching bids at ringside were Mike Sorensen and Ross Butler of Livestock Plus, Tom Rooney from Brand X, and Jason Lekin of the Tama Livestock Auction.
The remaining steers, the youth who raised them, celebrity showpersons, and their sale price is as follows:
Swag, raised by Nick Fitzsimmons, Vail. Showperson: Gov. Shomei Yokiouchi of Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. $3,500.
Kaboom, raised by Catherine Punt, Alton. Showperson: Heidi Gansen, Miss Rodeo Iowa 2011. $3,500.

What’s on my mind....By toby Muller
There are a lot of things on my mind this time of year. Cyclone football and upcoming deer season are close to the top of the list, but edging them ever so slightly is how to improve on this year’s breeding season. If you had excellent conception rates this year, you should ask yourself why and what you did different to accomplish this. Of course, if the opposite is true, you should go ahead and try to get smarter. Failures and short-comings tend to be a great time for this in my experience.
With the brutal summer we experienced the most common question I’ve heard is: Did the heat kill our conception rates? Well, in some places, it sure didn’t help and other farms have seen phenomenal breeding seasons. Although every farm and even every pasture has its own story, some common themes seem to have surfaced. Some of the worst groups have been in
heifer groups, dry lots, pastures that were being supplemented heavily and cattle with later breeding seasons. Some other factors that caught my attention were the evidence of a pink eye outbreak and an overuse of by-products. On the other end of the spectrum, good groups have been cows that were bred earlier in the season, and were lean, lactating, and had ample shade.
On a hot year like this, it doesn’t take a whole lot to put some science behind why most of these factors could affect your cow herd positively or negatively. The challenge is the things that seemed to make or break your program this year may not be the same next year. It’s impossible to foresee next year’s problems, but we do need to take the time to try and isolate the things that we want to continue, and minimize the factors that are hurting your breeding program. Hopefully next year won’t be the scortcher this one was and our shortcomings won’t be amplified quite so much. n

Two Records Fall at 2011 Iowa Sate Fair Sale
of Championsby evan Rayl
With a final swing of Auctioneer Al Conover’s gavel, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised $286,300 for the 14 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand Champions in the Sale of Champions Saturday, August 20, at the 2011 Iowa State Fair.
Two champion records were broken during the sale. The Reserve Champion 4-H Market Heifer sold for a record $28,000, beating the previous mark of $20,000 set in 2008. The Grand Champion 4-H Broiler Pen also set a new record with a price of $5,800. The previous record was set in 2010 with a price of $5,700.
Participants in the Sale of Champions were asked to find home-town supporters to set a floor price for bidding. The purchaser in the auction paid the difference between the floor price and the final sale price. Each participant in the sale takes home a check for 80 percent of the animal's sale price. The IFAA keeps 20 percent to fund the scholarship program and cover Sale expenses. In addi-tion to their sale earnings, the exhibitors of the Grand Champion 4-H Market Steer, Grand Champion 4-H Market Hog and Grand Champion FFA Market Lamb earn the use of a new aluminum live-stock trailer for one year, courtesy of Featherlite, Inc., of Cresco.
When added with the $147,000 of scholarships and performance and carcass awards presented prior to the Sale, the IFAA bestowed $429,700 on young livestock and poultry exhibitors during the day's event. Since the inception of the Sale of Champions in 1988, the IFAA has given out more than $4.3 million through Sale pro-
ceeds and scholarships to deserving youth participating in agricul-tural-related projects and interested in agricultural-related careers.

So the kids and I decided to FINALLY try the Rusty Duck Bar & Grille in Dexter, Iowa. We don’t live too far away from there and since they were named the 2011 Iowa’s Best Burger by the Iowa Beef Industry Council, I thought it was time. It also helped that our good friend, Kyrstee, was working
her last night there before she returned to college. Oh my, the burgers are amazing!!! I’m told that Brad uses the
trim from the top loin and sirloin and that goes into a grinder and becomes the ground beef for the burgers – 14 ounces!! I could only eat a quarter of mine! I think that is all I am used to with our typical drive-thru burgers. I made the mistake of letting Tuck get a meal. He, of course, couldn't finish his, but then he thought he better help me with mine since I got cheese and the most amazing bacon!! Thank you Brad Waldron, owner and chef!! Kyrstee you held up very well under the pressure of Taylor loud whispering “Tersie” every two minutes and Tuck not understanding that you weren’t there just for us!
We decided, over Labor Day weekend, that Tucker needed to get some experience showing in a small open show, so we headed up to the Guthrie County Fair. We had lots of time before Tuck would be showing, so off we went to check everything out. Those of you who know me, know I have been in love with the 49er’s and Joe Montana forever. You may also know that my brother and I are also in a con-tinuous, straight up competition to see who can get more football cards. Well, this turned out to be my lucky day.
I noticed a couple of boys looking through large boxes of football
cards. Of course, I had to ask if they had seen any Joe Montana cards. Naturally, we hit it off chatting about football and my fantasy foot-ball team. I had to ask their opinion on whether or not I should keep my running back or try to con my sister out of Tom Brady. As we were chatting, I noticed their 4-H shirts and inquired about whether they were showing cattle. One of boys says “Yep I’m showing a steer today.” So I asked him if he ever read Livestock Plus. He said, “Oh, yeah!” We were fast friends. Soon I found out that McKlain Jorgensen told his mom, Melinda, that he found football cards for that lady that writes for Livestock Plus. What a sweet young man, and I wish him the best of luck in his many years of showing to come! Also, I need to thank them because I ended up with five Joe Montana cards and one Jerry Rice, so it was a great day for me!
After an amazing church service on 9-11 this year, Tucker looked up at me and asked, “Why would anyone want to hurt so many people?” That is hard when you don’t have an answer, but he fol-lowed it with, “I bet they are with God.” What a blessing to live in a country where our first responders are so quick to put their own lives on the line for those in need. Please take a moment to remember all of those lost during 9-11 and especially for our first responders and our military.
Hope all of you are enjoying sale season and enjoying the hunt! Heidi [email protected]
