The LMA (established in 1892 as the Liverpool Nautical College) offers a

complete professional training path for the development of marine pilots,

training and certification required for Deck Officer and Engineer officer

Certificates of Competency and managers in the maritime and port

industries. Our advanced ship handling simulation (a 360 degree field of view

• For entry as an experienced seafarer - candidates must have an MNTB Training Record Book, completed to the required standard, demonstrating a minimum of 30 months sea service (including 6 months engine room watch keeping duties in the last 12 months) or as stated on the MCA initial assessment

• Discharge book entries verifying sea service

• Training Record Book (TRB)

Deck Officer TrainingThe deck officer training programme is the first step towards being a Captain on a cruise liner taking passengers around the world or navigating a 500,000 tonne merchant ship. The Merchant Navy comprises many different shipping companies with vessels ranging from 500 to 500,000 tonnes in size. The ships are a vital part of the world economy, carrying oil, containers, refrigerated cargo, coal, ore, grain, timber, cars, steel and many other products to keep nations fed and industry supplied. Other commercial activities include cruise liners, ferries, cable laying and scientific vessels.

As a deck officer and eventually as Captain of one of these vessels you would be responsible for the safe navigation and the safe delivery of the cargo and passengers to their final destination. You will be part of a small vital team in charge of a sophisticated vessel and high value cargo.

The Deck Officer Training Programme provides the industry-approved knowledge for a deck officer and Captain of a commercial ship. The course is designed to be integrated with professional short courses and twelve months training at sea so that, after three years, the successful student will have obtained not only a degree level programme but also a Department of Transport Officer of the Watch (OOW) certificate. This is the fastest way for a new entrant to acquire the OOW certificate.

This is the initial qualification for an officer to be in charge of the navigational watch on a commercial vessel anywhere in the world. After further sea time and short courses, as a qualified officer, Chief Mate and Master Mariner certificates will be obtained.

The programme takes three calendar years to complete as students undergo twelve month sea time periods between University study phases in Liverpool.

Enrolment Approximately one month prior to the course start the student will receive enrolment and induction instructions. The student will be required to attend an enrolment session where they will complete an enrolment form, pay the course fees in fulland receive a student card. Students are expected to attend an induction day to prepare for the course and for life as a student at Liverpool John Moores University.

LJMU accommodationLJMU offer rooms based in a range of city-centre Halls. Marybone and Atlantic Point are the closest Halls to the Byrom Street campus where your course is taught. Please note that contracts are usually arranged around the times of more conventional academic programmes which may not match the timing of your particular programme. Accommodation in Halls is usually only available to students studying at LJMU for a minimum of 42 weeks and who have a September start date. All non-UK students must pay their rent in full before they arrive in the UK. Living expensesIn addition to the course fees it is recommended that students budget approximately £600 (based on 2012 costs) per month to cover accommodation, travel and food.

Additional information for international applicants• If you are not of British Nationality you will require a UK Student Visitor Visa to

enter the UK

• In order to obtain a UK Student Visitor Visa you must meet the course requirements and have received and accepted your LJMU unconditional offer letter

• Visa processing times can take approximately one month

• If you are an International applicant and have any criminal convictions from a previous visit to the UK then you should seek advice from the UKBA regarding your visa application prior to you submitting an application

• Under UK Border Agency Regulations international students are only allowed to take re-assessment in any element of their programme on a maximum of two occasions
