A note from our editor...

Hello lovely Lifestyle readers!

December ISSUE 92

Joy x Joy Lewis, Editorwww.lifestylemonthly.co.ukEmail: [email protected]

Finally it’s here – the most magical time of the year.

I believe in Christmas, do you? I’m not asking about the jolly fat man in red – of course he’s real – I mean the magic of Christmas, do you believe in that? Need more convincing? Here we go then. It’s a sad state of affairs, that in this country for most of the year, many of us spend very time little time with family and friends. Neighbours are people you just raise your chin to in the morning on the way to work, and people on the street are to be avoided at all costs.

But Christmas magic changes that. As the December days tick by, the magic gets stronger and stronger. Moods are lifted, and conversations are started with strangers on trains. Society magically gets happier and more approachable. By the time Christmas Eve has arrived, the country is full of Christmas magic, strangers at the bus stop are not strangers any more, rather, they are somebody to wish Merry Christmas to. We speak to our neighbours, and hold more than a two second conversation with them. And kindness to strangers, charities, and in fact society in general, for these few short days becomes common place and normal. Now do you believe?

Fancy joining me and making Christmas magic last for the whole month? You never know, it could be contagious and last even longer than that. I’ll go first, pass it forward if you will. Let me wish you a Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Enjoy this most magical time of the year!

Olly MursOlly Murs, the host of X Factor, chart topper and all round heartthrob, is coming to Liverpool to open and perform at the Radio City Christmas Live on 9 December.

We spoke to him about why he loves performing in Liverpool so much, what it’s like to be hosting the X Factor, his new very sexy song, Kiss Me, and the fate of his best friend John who was so cruelly ousted from the X Factor auditions.

HELLO, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO ANOTHER TRIP TO LIVERPOOL TO PERFORM AT THE RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS LIVE CONCERT?Yes, really looking forward to it, and I open the show, I can’t believe it, I am really looking forward to it. I love Liverpool, it’s always good to come and perform there. I just finished the tour there earlier in the year, it’s brilliant in Liverpool, so I can’t wait to go back again.

EVERYBODY SAYS THAT THEY LOVE PERFORMING TO A LIVERPOOL AUDIENCE, BUT WHY, WHAT’S SO GREAT AND DIFFERENT ABOUT THE AUDIENCE THERE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE?It’s the passion, I think that’s the word, passion. About football and music you are all passionate about it. When you guys come to a gig, you are always up for having a really great time, you go mad for it. Brookside used to be one of my favourite shows, which isn’t on any more, but it was all there too. Passion. Even when you are eating chicken, you guys are passionate about it, it’s great it’s brilliant. I love that.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE HOSTING THE X FACTOR, IT’S SOMETHING VERY NEW FOR YOU.It’s nuts. It’s crazy. I can’t quite get my head around the fact that I am hosting the main show. It’s keeping me really busy, but I love it. I work on it 3 days a week, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On a Friday I go in with Caroline, and we do all the sound checks and watch the contestants and rehearse script chats. Then on Saturday we do the rehearsals and the main shows. So I do the X Factor for three days a week and my music for four days a week, and a big fat zero time for myself, but that’s ok.

WHEN YOUR FRIEND JOHN AUDITIONED FOR THE X FACTOR, IT DIDN’T GO TOO WELL. HOW IS HE NOW?Well I was upset you know. It was really disappointing for him, he came all the way from Essex, he obviously wanted to do well. I think he just didn’t show the confidence that I know he as in him. It was really difficult for me to watch it back on TV. I was devastated for him as a mate too, it was a really tough time. But he’s fine now, he’s really busy. But I am keeping an eye on him on FaceBook and that. He’s really busy with his gigs so he’s going to ok.

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FIT IN COMING ALL THE WAY UP TO LIVERPOOL FOR THE RADIO CITY LIVE CHRISTMAS GIG?That’s the thing, it’s all during the X Factor, it’s going to be around the live show, so I am going to have to fly all the way back to make sure I am around for all the X Factor stuff that I have to do. It’s going to be hectic, but Liverpool has always been so supportive of me and my music in the past, it’s always a pleasure to go there and perform. This gig is going to be huge.

YOUR NEW SINGLE “KISS ME” IT’S A GREAT TRACK.Yes, I think so too, thank you. It’s got like a kind 80’s vibe to it. It’s definitely the type of track that I think the guys should have on their playlist.

HOW MUCH DID TAIO CRUZ WRITE AND HOW MUCH DID YOU WRITE?Well, he wrote the chorus and the main parts of the song. He and his guys sent the song over to me. It was really nice to do something different, and that’s what I love about this song, is that it is different, the vibe of it is quite 80’s and very sexy. That’s why I think guys should have it on their playlist. Couples should have it on in the background of a nice candle lit dinner, coz it’s sexy, go on baby kiss me like you mean it baby.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS LIVEThanks, I can’t wait, best city in the world.

HI BEN NEARLY A YEAR ON FROM WINNING X FACTOR, WHAT HAS 2015 BEEN LIKE FOR YOU?The craziest year ever. To think this time last year I would be writing, recording and releasing my debut album is insane. It's been a whirlwind. But lots of fun.

ARE YOU WATCHING X FACTOR THIS YEAR?I've been watching bits of it when I get a chance. The talent is very good this year so very hard to call. I like Lauren Murray though.

YOUR NEW SINGLE, 2ND HAND HEART WITH KELLY CLARKSON - HOW DID THIS COLLABORATION HAPPEN?I originally recorded the song in LA, and when I got back and had a meeting with the label they suggested the song would work well as a duet because of the lyrics. Then we heard that Kelly was interested. It came about so quickly but when I heard her vocal on the track I knew it was the first single. She's amazing.

You recorded the track in the States, what was it like to be whisked over there? It was great. I had never been to the States before and in the space of 4 months I went to LA, New York and Nashville. All the places were incredible and I got to work with some amazing people.

Ben Haenow

YOUR DEBUT ALBUM, BEN HAENOW, HAS JUST HIT THE SHELVES, YOU MUST BE SO EXCITED ABOUT IT?I can't really explain the feeling. It's so mental seeing my album on the shelves. I worked hard on it so hope that people enjoy it.

FOR FANS THAT HAVE NOT HEARD IT YET, CAN YOU TELL ME A BIT MORE ABOUT IT, ARE THERE MORE COLLABORATIONS AND WHAT TYPE OF SOUND DOES IT HAVE?It has a bit of something on there for everyone. I didn't want to make an album with just one sound so wanted to experiment and try new things. There is pop/rock mixed with ballads mixed with a gospel sound.

YOU ARE PERFORMING AT THE RADIO CITY CHRISTMAS LIVE CONCERT, ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IT? HAVE YOU PERFORMED IN LIVERPOOL BEFORE?I cannot wait to perform. Performing live is one of my favourite things and now I get to do it with my own songs. I have performed in Liverpool, and the crowds are GREAT! Liverpool has such a cool vibe.

The Liverpool Empire Theatre’s pantomime this year is Dick Whittington; a rags to riches tale of a young man and his cat on a quest

to find fame and fortune. This classical family panto promises to wow the audience with its traditional ingredients of slapstick comedy, live music and dance. And to add that extra bit of magic, Dick Whittington will be the only panto in Liverpool to feature a scene in 3D.

We sent Derrie Osborne backstage to meet the cast as rehearsals got underway…… Oh yes they did.

Fairy Fazakerley performed by Sally LindsayAre you excited to be a part of something your children can see you in?Yes, it's unbelievable for my boys to see me on stage. That was a major part of my decision to take the part. They're 5 so the perfect age to see a panto. One of my boys is obsessed with dresses and sequins, so he'll be in his element. What makes Liverpool a special audience?I've not been to Liverpool since ‘98/99 when I was in Girl's Night Out at the Empire. I have to say Liverpool has had a big wash since then, and I can't wait to rediscover it.

Sarah The Cook performed by Eric PottsTell me, Eric, what does this year’s panto mean to you? I've written this panto. It's developed from the original version I did 5 years ago in Bristol. Now I've moved the whole story to the golden paved streets of Liverpool. This is my 18th Christmas panto and I won't stop now. So you're very passionate about it then? It’s such a significant part of people's Christmas, and most children's first visit to the theatre. They're the ones it's vital to impress so they become future audiences. The rest of the year they're attached to consoles. With panto, they get to spend 2 hours being innocent children.

Alice Fitzwarren performed

by Leanne CampbellWhat makes panto special to you?I first appeared in panto at the Empire when I was 10. Doing panto for me is like a bug that I don’t want to shake. It's also nice for my kids to come along and enjoy the show. It becomes a real family affair backstage with all the parties in the green room for the stars’ kids. What makes Liverpool a special audience? They're nuts! Liverpool loves panto.

King Rat performed by

Warren DonnellyWhat are you most looking forward to during your role? It's a great role to get your teeth into, and an opportunity to overact. It's one of the only jobs where it's a good sign when you are being booed! Pantomime carries a gruelling schedule. How do you cope with that? Well there's no such thing as a free lunch. Last year I lost half a stone running round in my heavy costume, so it keeps you fit and healthy.

Dick Whittington performed by

Kurtis StaceyWhat are you most looking forward to during this role? It's very over the top. As an actor what you want is to let yourself go, especially when you know the audience is enjoying it. You buzz more off that. And the 3D sequence is bringing something really different. What makes Liverpool audiences special? I've been in panto in Liverpool once before, and I enjoy it more here being at home. The audiences love it, and they're more wowed in Liverpool than in other towns and cities.

Idle Jack performed by Liam MellorWhat will you bring to this role that you don't usually get an opportunity to?For me, it's all about the children. My type of comedy is for children. It's magical mixed with real life, and it's amazing my own kids are old enough to enjoy it now. I relish the overacting. Slapstick comedy never ages.

What makes panto special to you? The shows are huge, which is the right size for me. The schedule is good, I have a blow up bed in my dressing room so I sleep between shows. The best thing is, the audience love when things go wrong... And I'm a bugger for playing on it! If it's there, I use it!

Alderman Fitzwarren performed

by Pete PriceWhat does panto mean to you? This is my 30th pantomime. I hated Christmas but panto covers up the pain of losing my Mum and since I’ve been doing it I have started to enjoy Christmas again. It also brings a new audience of children to the theatre which is great. What makes this year's panto special? It's a million pound set. The 3D part has never been done before. It's going to be spectacular. Finally, how do you find the schedule?I'm 70 in January and I'll work forever. The schedule is dreadful though. I have 1 rider - a bed in my dressing room! I'm also doing my radio show so I survive on 4 hours sleep and still do both shows!

Elf on a Shelf

The new countdown to Christmas tradition, Elf on a Shelf. The mischievous Elf enters any house where children live, as one of Santa’s scout elves. He can sit

on the mantelpiece, table or wherever he wants, to watch over the family. The Elves are sent by Santa himself, to be his eyes and ears in children’s homes around the world. Then on Christmas Eve, the Elf reports back who is on the naughty and who is on the nice list.

This new tradition, which is entering more and more homes every year started with a children’s story book of the same name. This mischievous little Elf brings an extra sparkle in the run up to Christmas, and captures children’s imagination,

because the Elf can get up to all sorts of mischief in the night, he can be in a different spot every morning, he can leave messages, and sometimes gets up to his own pranks.

Be sure to give him a name though, as his magic will not work without that crucial piece of his character.

Santa’s Secret Workshop Grotto intu Trafford Centre

If you have children, then the Trafford Centre’s Santa’s Secret Workshop Grotto really shouldn’t be missed. I took my 3 ½ year old twin boys, a true test for anyone, even Santa’s well trained elves.

As soon as we arrived the story began, because this isn’t just a trip to sit on Santa’s knee, this is an interactive unique Grotto experience. The second we walked through the entrance my family’s fun packed journey began. After my twins were given special passports we were directed through a mirror maze into Santa’s workshop. Here we were told that the Elves were unfortunately off sick and could our boys get involved and help get Santa’s workshop up and running again in time for Christmas. From present sorting, to lantern making to games to feed the reindeer, we were having so much fun we almost forgot the main reason for us being there, to meet Santa.

Review by Joy Lewis

I would recommend this to any parent with young children. The whole experience is so magical and well executed, that this grotto will not fail to capture the imagination of any child lucky enough to go.

Allerton High Street will shine again this December as businesses joined forces to provide the community with a Christmas tree and switch-on event

Tuesday 1st December saw the high street library site transformed into a shimmering beacon of all things festive with a tree kindly donated by local entrepreneur Darren of Timpson’s and Tesco Superstore, Allerton.

156 Regiment RLC took care of the heavy lifting while residents, businesses and community groups came together to create decorations for the tree, making this a truly L18 based event.

Allerton Road retailers also pledged support, offering discounts on everything from dining out to festive cocktails and stocking fillers for even the most difficult to buy for on your Christmas list.

The family-friendly big Switch-On began at 6pm accompanied by festive carolling from of the Friends of Allerton Library Children’s Choir and band. The event was hailed a success by residents and shoppers alike who braved the weather to welcome this Christmas tradition back to the area.

The Christmas tree unveiling signals the start of a new initiative based on community engagement in Allerton and is just one of many events planned for the year ahead.

This season displays an umbrella of accord that weaves earthy neutrals with a range of bold colour statements and patterns that reflect warmth, fantasy and all things natural. For the first time we are seeing androgynous colours that can be worn to portray effortless sophistication across men’s and women’s fashion. The golden yellow shade, referred to as; ‘Oak Buff’ is one of nature’s signature shades which acts to nurture and comfort, conveying a casual look.

The winey red, referred to as; ‘Marsala’ and the cool blue; referred to as ‘Biscay Bay’ are the luxurious and elegant nightlife treasures this season. Marsala is rich and robust; it incorporates strong warmth oozing sophistication and grounding. On the other hand; Biscay Bay splashes a more cool and confident touch. This elegant teal creates composure, encourages posture and radiates confidence with visions of soothing tropical waters. Both shades are interesting on their own but work wonderful as a contrast for those special occasions. Both men and women can weave ‘Marsala’ and ‘Biscay Bay’ with a concrete grey to construct a bold mix of bright earthy inspiration.

Last but not least the purple shade; referred to as ‘Amethyst Orchid’ is the jewel in the crown of fall 2015 palette. The colour is vibrant, bold and energetic, bringing a somewhat sensual energy to the palette. It is unique to the fall family, purely breaking the boundaries to winter neutrals.

everton in the community

he start of the half term holidays saw local children from EitC’s disability programme attend a disabled riding session at Aintree Racecourse as part of the

new Aintree Community Programme and Racing Together campaign.

Working in partnership with Everton in the Community and Riding for Disabled Association (RDA), the day saw over 20 children from both the local area and the Blue’s official charity’s award-winning disability programme invited to enjoy a fun filled day at Aintree Racecourse.

Accompanied by Club Ambassador Graham Stuart, the children – some of whom have autism or learning difficulties – were given the opportunity to try riding, learn how to groom and look after a horse, enter the famous Weighing Room and dress up in jockey’s silks. The children were also given the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of Aintree at the top of the Sefton Stand and find out more about the world renowned Crabbie’s

Grand National as well as enjoying a day with a Channel 4 camera filming for its Morning Line Programme.

Aintree launched its community programme at The Becher Chase Community race day in December 2014 where it gave free access to the racecourse for local people with over 30,000 attending. Aintree is also proud to be the beacon racecourse for Racing Together, British Racing’s national community engagement programme with the aim of using the power of racing to make a real difference to local children.

Beechley Stables, based in Allerton and who are part of the RDA provided the expertise and dozens of volunteers to undertake the session.

Speaking after his time at the home of the Crabbies Grand National, Club Ambassador Graham Stuart said, “It’s been great to come along to Aintree today with Everton in the Community and find out more about its community programme and who it benefits. I’ve really enjoyed getting the chance to look behind the scenes; I think I enjoyed myself as much as the children and we all left with big smiles on our faces!”

Grant Rowley, Regional Communications Manager for Jockey Club Racecourses, added, “We’re delighted to have hosted our second disabled riding session at Aintree as part of the Aintree Community Programme and Racing Together. Today was another fantastic day for the

kids and it was great to welcome our broadcast partners, Channel 4 to the session today – we definitely had some budding reporters here as well!

“Our relationship with the community is very important to us

and by working with our partners, Everton in the Community and the RDA, we hope to provide many more sessions in the coming months and years for local people.”

Tickets for the 2016 Crabbie’s Grand National Festival are available to purchase at www.thecrabbiesgrandnational.co.uk or by calling 0344 579 3001. Racegoers can also buy tickets directly from the sales office at Aintree Racecourse. Hospitality packages please call 0151 522 2911 for more information.

3 Pains ofChristmas is meant to be a time of good will and festive spirit. Unfortunately for many it’s also a time of over indulgence. Too many “spirits” can lead to "not so merry bells." Here are my top 3 tips to keep the holidays a happier time and reduce the pain that can sometimes come with the festive season.

1. Cold and Flu:

2. Stress

3. Lack of sunshine

There's nothing to make you feel less like going "ho, ho, ho" than a cold - or worse, the flu! The sniffles and sneezes don't just affect us physically, with 65% of us saying we get bad-tempered, weepy or withdrawn when we're under the weather.

Forget peace and goodwill, it sometimes seems like Christmas is the season of stress and fretting. We all want the perfect Christmas and the stress of not getting it just right can often spoil the whole experience. To start with, stop making it a chore! Be realistic - perfect Christmases come from accepting what is not good and taking action to improve it, rather than wishing it will all come right on the day. Try to enjoy it - despite the unwanted presents and visitors - it is only a day after all!

Oh the weather outside is frightful... dark, damp, cold, and miserable in fact. The symptoms of SAD, Seasonal Affective Disorder can hit many people this time of year. Strengthen your the immune system by increasing your Vitamin D levels, rich sources are found in fish oils, eggs and breakfast cereals. Keep up your exercise and outdoor activity to help with your energy levels.

ChristmasPrevention is always better than cure, cover those sneezes with a hanky, keep up with regular exercise and drink lots of fluids to help the immune system.

I really love this time of year, where you can explore and experiment from the normal, for Christmas party's make up.Anything with a bit of shimmer or glitter, and rich tones goes. Be brave at this time of year,

you can get away with almost anything. Big lashes, big hair, smokey eyes and glass gloss!I use waterproof and long lasting products. For that all night, dancing the night away fresh faced look. I recommend using nourishing products, as the air is cold, and heating is on, it can dry out your skin. Keep that dewy moisturised look.

To achieve the looks I have produced in the images, I have primed the skin with cleanser, toner and face serum and an eye cream. Firstly I do the eye make up. As I'm going to use deep colours and shimmers/glitters, it's best to do the eyes as some products can fall onto the cheeks. I primed the eye lids, then patted in a deep purple three quarters across, then used a black and blended, black liner on water line and upper lid, I used a glitter gel on the inner corner rather than a highlighter for that speck of glitz. Volume black mascara also, you can add lashes also! For the rest I used a BB nude cream for a flawless base, mat to cream foundation pallet.I find this is great as it adds in moisturiser then has the mat finish so it conceals any sweat you have from all that dancing, and finish with a mineral power foundation to set and even skin tone. Conceal with the stick under the eye to keep eyes looking fresh and not tired. A orangey pink blush and a highlighter shimmer also on the cheek bones. A glass high gloss lip gloss, to coordinate with your lids. Add in some mega curls to your locks and your away!!!

Be daring!

WIRELESS SPEAKERSR e v i e w b y J o y L e w i sWondering what to give the guy or girl who has everything this Christmas? Wireless speakers may just be the answer, especially as the price has nosedived in the past few years. No longer are they the toy purely for the rich and famous, now a wireless speaker can be bought at any price point. So much so, that after reviewing these speakers for ourselves, no house should be without one.Check out our favourites, where even the cheapest ones are excellent. They all have a party length battery life, of at least 5 hours of continuous play, and best of all, they are a really fun gadget. They are perfect as stocking fillers, or under the tree main presents. All you need to do next is pick your favourite, we highly recommend all of these Wireless Speakers.

BOSE SOUNDLINK COLOUR BLUETOOTH SPEAKER £120

We couldn’t help but be highly impressed by this speaker, and it is easily as good as the other more expensive wireless speakers on the market. The sound quality is crystal and the bass is seriously phat, especially when placed against the wall. Considering its size,

it plays much louder than you would expect. It delivers over 8 hours of continuous play. It comes in 4 colours and would sit perfectly in any room of the house. Turn it up and enjoy.

XQISIT B06 MINI SPEAKER £29.99Don’t let this palm sized speaker fool you, it packs a serious sound punch. Perfect for bathrooms – as long as they don’t get wet. And for people on the go. Available in 2 colours champagne gold and gun metal grey.

GEAR4 ESPRESSO SPEAKER£19.99 This coffee cup

shaped Espresso speaker in pastel shades, would look good on any desk. GEAR4, is already a household name for audio, and this latest offering does not let them down. The speaker, al-though tiny – has

a very good sound quality and bass tone that creates a rich sound.

LINDY BTS-360 £59Living up to its name, the BTS-360 gives a full 360° sound experience, meaning that users can place it anywhere in a room for a full, room-filling soundscape. The sound is full, crisp and reaches even the deepest of bass notes. We tried this at a house party and it handled the sound perfectly. We recommend this for anyone who is having a New Year shin dig. Available now from www.lindy.co.uk.

BAY TV'sLIFESTYLE MONTHLY’S NEW MONTHLY COLUMNISTS BAY TV’S JAY AND ELLIE; WILL BE KEEPING US UP TO DATE WITH ALL THE ENTERTAINMENT AND MUSICAL HAPPENINGS IN AND AROUND LIVERPOOL.

Jay and Ellie

So it is probably round now that you are already sick of the cheesy Crimbo songs on the radio, fed up of seeing the all singing, all

dancing snowy adds on the telly, and if someone else asks you ‘Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? Then, like us you’d be quite happy to pelt them with a Christmas pud and never speak to them again. So with that in mind we promise not to mention the ‘C-word’ once in the rest of our column. Instead we will give you a break from men in red suits and wrapping paper and tell you what else is going on around Liverpool in the next few weeks that won’t involve anything ‘C-wordy’.

MusicTwo gigs for you from two great local bands this month. Unfortunately they are both on the same night so choose wisely. First up is our favourite 5 piece from Liverpool, Tea Street Band. They describe their music as ‘elecrtro- guitar based pop’. To us it’s dreamy, atmospheric and instantly takes you away to warmer days, perfect for this time of year. Tea Street Band are now one of Liverpool’s best loved bands and if you haven’t seen them live we strongly advise you to do so. In the meantime check out their debut album with our favourite tracks ‘Summer Dreaming’ and ‘Disco Lights’. They play The Buyers Club on Saturday 19th December.

Also on the 19th another great local band By the Sea take to the Constellations stage. We caught them at LIMF last year and have been fans ever since. Similar to Tea Street, you can definitely escape to the music of By the Sea.

ComedyA huge night of comedy comes to the Phil on Sunday 13th December in the form of ‘Laughter house Live’. Seven comedians will be on stage all headlined by Irish comedy sensation Tommy Tiernan. Liverpool’s own Neil Fitzmaurice will be MC’ing and other acts include Katherine Ryan, Paul Sinha, and Gary Delaney. Laugh out load comedy, once again from the gang at Laughter house.

TheatreOh we are not talking panto (sorry). Of course a feast of pantomimes happening but we love the annual Royal Court December show, basically panto for adults and always hilarious. This year Lindzi Germaine, Michael Starke and other familiar Royal Court faces take you to warmer climates and to the desserts of Ancient Egypt for ‘Pharaoh ’Cross The Mersey’ There’ll be pyramids, soft lids, old bids and more sand than you can shake a stick at! To us the Royal Court shows are hat scouse comedy is all about, and they never fail to deliver them laugh out loud and laugh until you cry moments. It runs until 16th January.

So much more to see and do in the best city in the world over December, it’s a fantastic city every month of the year, but something even more special about Liverpool during them ‘C-word’ weeks – so go explore and enjoy.

Don’t forget we are on your TV every Thursday 8.30pm on Bay TV Liverpool with The Guide and also hear us on Juice FM. Go see our new website, it’s full of things to do in Liverpool, interviews and live local music – www.theguideliverpool.comTwitter too @TheGuideLpool.All the very best, and big ‘C-word’ love from us,Jay & Elliex

Ol’ Blue Eyes at 100

He was and still is, quite simply, the best male pop singer that there has ever and probably will ever be. He was the first ‘pop’ star, the first idol of the post-war

‘teeny-boppers.’ Later on he changed the art of singing and making records forever, influencing everybody who came after him, both male and female.

Frankie went to Hollywood where his impeccable timing and killer looks made him an Oscar-winning legend of the silver screen. He made it to the ‘top of the heap’, remained one of the biggest stars on the planet for decades on end and if he was still with us today then Ol’ Blue Eyes, The Comeback Kid, The Chairman of the Board … Francis Albert Sinatra … would have been celebrating his 100th birthday on December 12th.

He stands almost alone, a towering icon of music with very few peers. Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson are the only artists since Frank’s peak in the 50’s who have even come close to matching his popularity and professional stature, both as an artist who inspired many other great artists, but also just as a stone cold icon of pop culture.

He sang on his first hit record in 1939 but it was the ‘Swing’ albums made for Capitol Records in the 50s with genius music arranger, Nelson Riddle, which confirm Frank’s immortality. They are often cited by venerated musicians and critics around the world as being among the finest records that have ever made, by anybody… ever. ‘Songs For Swinging Lovers’, ‘Nice ‘N’ Easy’, ‘ Come Fly With Me’ and ‘In The Wee Small Hours’ raised the bar

and lifted the art making records to magical unprecedented heights seldom reached since.

And then there was something that he did with his pals Sammy and Dean.

Frank faced his final curtain on 14th May 1998 at the age of 82. When he died the lights in the Empire State Building were turned blue, the lights of the Las Vegas Strip were dimmed and the roulette wheels across town stopped spinning in his honour.

If you want to discover Frank Sinatra’s music and don’t know where to start then follow my Spotify page … MartinQuirk … and click on the ‘Frank Sinatra’ playlist.https://open.spotify.com/user/martinquirk/playlist/1P80s4PDBXCkTbLQdVJujK

Lindi Ortega, Toronto born singer of soulful country music, has been in the music business for over a decade. With four albums under her belt, she has now released her fifth, “Faded Gloryville,” to much critical acclaim. Our editor Joy Lewis spoke to Lindi about her new album and her trip to the Arts Club Liverpool on Friday 29 January.

Hello Lindi. Congratulations on your latest album, Faded Gloryville, which was released in August, what’s the story behind it?The song itself was inspired by the film "Crazy Heart", which is a portrait of an older musician that perhaps had his time in the sun, and has since been surviving in the shade with addiction issues, terrible gigs, no money. I asked myself if I would end up that way. It seems funny to ask yourself such a dark question, but in this business, life as a working mid-level musician comes with an uncertain future. I recalled when I first started out, and all the romantic ideals I had about the music business versus the reality of what I've come to know. I decided that those moments where you doubt yourself is akin to a desolate town where some of us pass through and some of us decide to stay. I called it Faded Gloryville, and wrote a song around the concept.

For those who are new to your music, how would you describe it?A little bit country, a little bit soul, a little bit blues and a little bit rockabilly.

For a girl from Canada, what got you into country music? My mother turned me onto country music... She is from Northern Ireland, so you'll have to ask how a woman from the UK developed such a love for this genre and passed it onto her Canadian daughter.

Which singer has been your biggest influence?Well if we are talking voices, I love Sam Cooke, if we are talking lyrics, I love Leonard Cohen, if we are talking performance, I love Nina Simone and if we are talking overall coolness, I love Johnny Cash.

Are you looking forward to coming to Liverpool on January 29th? Have you performed here before?I love Liverpool, and yes I've performed a few times!! Can't wait to return!

Spice SugarSanjay Sood-Smith got to week 10 of the Apprentice in 2014. After leaving the show, he took Lord Sugar’s advice and dumped his old business plan of an online fitness network, for something he is far more passionate about, Indian Food. Sanjay’s new Indian food product Tuk In, is about to hit the shelves, our editor Joy Lewis caught up with him to find out about life after being fired and who he thinks will win The Apprentice this year.

Hi Sanjay, what have you been doing since we last saw you on the apprentice?Hello! Life has been pretty crazy over the past year. I quit my job in banking straight after The Apprentice, and after a short stint learning the restaurant trade I've set up my own food business Tuk In 'curry-in-a-naan'. I've also been doing lots of speaking on equality issues and volunteer for Stonewall by talking to kids in schools.

Your new product, Tuk In looks very tasty. What is it about this product that attracted you to it - apart from Indian food being a country wide favourite? For a start I'm half Indian - so I've been lucky enough to grow up eating Indian food and I absolutely love it. My business partner Tom and I used to work in banking together and loved going out for a curry. Tom actually dreamed up the idea when he was at Uni in Cambridge, wanting to find a way to eat curry that was easy and mess free, and that's how the idea for Tuk In came about. It takes delicious curries, mixes them with fluffy pilau rice and seals them inside a soft naan - what's not to love about that?! Curry is the nation’s favourite food, we've just come up with a convenient way to eat it

Who is Tuk In aimed at?Tuk In is aimed at anybody who loves a tasty curry without the fuss that goes with it. When we've tested the product with customers we've found that it has a really broad appeal - with both men and women across the generations loving the product. With the three flavours of Chicken Korma, Chicken Tikka and Hot Chicken Jalfrezi there is something in there for everyone's taste!

Are you watching this year's apprentice? What do you think of the candidates this year?I am watching it religiously. I'm liking the line-up of candidates this year - I think it's a good mix. I think there aren't as many in there purely for comedy reasons as there might have been in previous years, and they all seem pretty serious. I don't think it has been quite as cut-throat as it 46

was in our year though, and I doubt most of the new bunch would have stood a chance in our board room!

Who do you tip to win?My money is on Joseph or Charleine they both seem like they know what they are doing and they've also got that ruthless streak that Lord Sugar looks for.

I suspect that Lord Sugar tends to keep certain candidates in when he likes their business plan, even though as candidates on the show they don't perform as well as others - would you agree?I don't think so. Lord Sugar says from the start he doesn't look closely at the business plans until the end and I tend to agree. I was fired in week 10 because he didn't like my plan and if he knew that already why keep me in? Also Soloman's 4 page plan with pictures of boats wasn't discovered until the interview round! I genuinely think he looks for someone who can be a success - the plan can always be moulded at a later stage if need be!

Even though Lord Sugar didn't go with your business proposal of the Fitness Database - are you still pleased that you went on the show?Absolutely 100%. I didn't even go with my business proposal in the end! Going on The Apprentice was amazing because it changed my life from being a banker to launching Tuk In - something I am truly passionate about. I also had a massive amount of fun doing all of the tasks - not everyone can say that they have had a billboard they designed displayed in Times Square! I also met some fantastic people and learned a huge amount, it has genuinely changed my life.

What did you learn from the Apprentice? I learnt how to be resilient for a start - you really have to fight for your place in there and it's definitely helped me grow a thicker skin. It also showed me that you can turn your hand to anything you put your mind to, as we got the chance to try out so many different types of business models. Above all else though it taught me that the most important thing in life is to

spend your time focusing on things that you are passionate about -

it's a cliche but it's true that life really is too short.

When is Tuk In hitting the shelves?

We are already stocked in Spar! We are also currently in talks with other big retailers. We're also

looking at supplying Tuk In on board airlines

- so keep an eye out next time you are on a plane.

I might even ask Lord Sugar if he wants us to cater his

Christmas party!

Album Review

Delirium – Ellie Gouldingby joy lewis

Ellie Goulding released her third studio album ‘Delirium’ on November last month on Polydor Records. ‘Delirium’is the follow-up to 2012’s ‘Halcyon’, which cemented Goulding’s status as a global artist.

There is a dramatic change between Delirium and its predecessors, Lights and Halcyon. This latest album is an altogether different sound, gone are the soft beats and sweet guitar riffs. And in their place is an electric pop album, which is a much harsher, different sound for Goulding. She even admits herself that this sound is a big experiment for her. That’s not to say that Delirium was hastily thrown together, no quite contraire, it has been 3 years in the writing and has been recorded all over the world. Goulding also found new people to share this musical experiment with, Max Martin, Greg Kurstin, One Republic’s Ryan Tedder, Klas Ahlund and Disclosure’s Guy Lawrence as well as long-time writing partner Jim Eliot in crafting this latest album.

Some reviews have defined it as a career album, but I can’t quite agree with this statement. As a pop album it is really quite good, and it is certainly very listenable. Most tracks will be heard on prime time radio, and there are some big anthems on there to propel it to chat topping success, such as ‘Devotion’, ‘On My Mind’, ‘Don’t Panic’ and ‘Don’t Need Nobody’. However, with the electric beats banging over Goulding’s naturally haunting voice, at times the sound was a little disjointed. Her earlier musical style is far better suited to her breathy haunting voice that she holds. Delirium’s sound is akin to putting a square peg into a round whole, it just doesn’t fit.

Having said that, one thing that is very clear throughout the album, is that Goulding has grown up. Her writing is more assertive, and she had more control over which artists to work with on the writing and recording. Perhaps now that Goulding has covered most of the pop bases for mass listenability in her last three albums, maybe her next album we will be treated to her own sound – what sound she will eventually plump for however, electric, pop or folk is anyone’s guess.

This family favourite in the heart of Liverpool city centre has had a multi mullion facelift both inside and out, with new branding and a whole new team in place to promise you an authentic taste of Italy at a price that won’t cost you the earth.

Atmosphere 9/10A very warm welcome on arrival, our waiter, Anthony couldn’t do enough to help. And the baby enjoyed watching the chefs prepare the food from the open plan kitchen and they even stopped to give her some attention as well.

Entertainment 6/10No specific entertainment as such but come with friends and family and you won’t need it. Children of all ages are well looked after with a special menu, delicious Italian gelato cart and crayons and art pack on arrival.

Choice on Menu 8/10We were given four menus which took a while to digest; the lunch menu, specials, standard menu and children’s menu, not forgetting the drinks menu. Plenty of choice but playing it safe sticking to everyone’s favourite pasta, pizza and grill dishes. The starters are nothing special but the mains and especially the deserts are wonderful and exceptional value.

Service 8/10Excellent, very friendly and helpful but slowed down as they got busier, or maybe they were just waiting for our food to digest before the coffee!

Table Location 10/10There isn’t a bad location in the restaurant, the whole setting area has been well planned.

Would we go there again?Absolutely. The prices are extremely reasonable, the service is exceptional and everyone seems genuinely proud of working there, which is reflected in the waiter/ress service. It was a pleasure to dine there.

LIVERPOOL’S BIGGEST STAR, PETE PRICE…..Multi award winning including The Radio Academy Hall of Fame 2015 and several Lifestyle Awards

Photo 1 – Love Interest – this is the lady Sarah the cook played by Eric Potts who of course was Diggery in Coronation Street. I actually fall in love with her in Dick Whittington – the big question is….do I finish up with her? You will have to come to the show and see! (she’s actually not my type but don’t tell her!!) Photo 2 – Ian Callaghan – Jimmy McGovern, Colin Mc Kewon – I was their guest at one of the Liverpool games. They are amazing company and in their own right such great talent. To sit with Jimmy McGovern and listen to some of his projects is truly amazing and you know he will win more awards. I can’t wait to see Reg which is the title of his new drama. Photo 3 – Alex Fletcher – who of course is one of the stars in Hollyoaks. I’m not going to tell you what I showed her on my phone…so don’t ask!!Photo 4 – Hollyoaks Hunks – 20 years old and this drama goes from strength to strength. I was thrilled to make a cameo appearance with most of the cast. Photo 5 – Peter Stringfellow. – I had an evening at Stringfellow’s as Peters guest. His restaurant is one of the best kept secrets in London. So the experience of his club is not just about beautiful women and celebrities but also culinary delights. Photo 6 – Weeping Window – I keep going over to St George’s Hall to see the poppies. Every time I go I see something different in this amazing piece of art and this tribute to the fallen – if you haven’t been, night time is the time. Thank you Liverpool, for bringing this work of art to us.

Christmas is a great time for so many. But we mustn’t forget to help other people. It’s all very well spending lots of money and getting yourself into debt but let’s think of what’s going on around the world – we cant imagine the migrants leaving their countries not knowing where they are going to finish up, and there are so many that will be in this state this December. Count your blessings that you have what you have. Check on your neighbour, even a smile can mean so much. But have the best ever Christmas and if you are religious, say a prayer for those who wont have a good Christmas.

BlackBerry Grove opens near New BriGhtoN’s waterfroNt

@blackberrygrove on Twitter and @blackberrygrove on Instagram.

An exciting new independent bar/restaurant has just opened their doors

in New Brighton and they put on an exclusive launch party to allow people to sample their menu.

Blackberry Grove is owned by Joanna Jones and although there are a vast amount of meat dishes on their menu, they are developing a keen following from vegans and vegetarians. Joanna is a vegetarian herself and explains that was part of the reason for starting this place, “I’d always wanted to open my own restaurant but just haven’t got round to it until now. My partner is a vegan so eating out can be difficult for us and so I wanted to open a place that caters for all types of diners. There was the option of having no meat on the menu at all but I’m entering a competitive industry and I know there are too many meat eaters out there!”

So it has proved. When asked what their most popular dish has been in the four weeks since opening, Joanna admits, “The rump steak goes well, as do the beef and pulled pork burgers with triple cooked chips. The scallops and the prawns starters fly out, but I think the braised Ox cheeks is the top seller. We have some great specials too….”

Another group of eaters Blackberry Grove is proving popular with, are people who choose a gluten free diet. Joanna continues, “We make everything from scratch here and every single dish is gluten free – but this is where I don’t want to put people off. People who can eat gluten don’t notice and the people who can’t or don’t wish to, have the luxury of choosing absolutely anything off the menu. At the beginning my head chef and I spoke about having a few dishes on the menu that were gluten free but the risk of cross contamination in the kitchen was too great. I wanted to go the whole hog, or not at all!”

The Bierkeller Entertainment Complex, Liverpool is about to start a major refurbishment and re-design in time for Christmas 2015. Over £500,000 is being spent on the multi award winning 18,000 square foot site over at Liverpool One. The venue will remain open in parts as a 3 week overhaul project takes place. With their three bars under one roof - Around the World in 80 Beers, Shooters Sport Bar and the Bierkeller room itself – The Bierkeller Entertainment Complex is already a big hit with a diverse crowd of regulars who come back for the quality food, drinks, entertainment and sports coverage. Yet after 3 years of being one of the city’s most popular venues and with extensive research taken out the team behind the complex want to improve the experience further.Often simply referred to as just the “Bierkeller” the complex is going to redesign and self contain the three in house bars a lot more. Starting with the exterior. Signage is going to clearly identify each venue within the complex. On arriving the first bar previously called Around the World in 80 Beers, will now be rebranded as simply Around the World. A more relaxing and comfortable seating area will now be added as well as many more beers taking the offering to well over a 100.Moving up the stairs to Shooters Sports Bar the refurb will see the installation of a new screen, ultra high definition 3 mm pixel with ultra black background, 4 meters wide by 2 meters high. The pool tables area will be moved to behind the current bar creating more space for sports fans to watch their favourites in action. This sports room will also be increased in size as work will knock through to the neighbouring Bierkeller room.Over in the Bierkeller room itself the capacity will be reduced from the current 350 to around 300 giving it a more authentic and intimate Bavarian Bierkeller theme. Additional toilets will also be introduced, as will also be the case in each of the 3 bars, so each venue is now self-contained.

As the young grandson looked on at the old dog sat by his grand-fathers feet, he couldn’t help but puzzle over the fact that every few minutes the old dog would whine

and yelp when he moved in an attempt to get comfortable. The young boy was confused, the dog appeared to be loving were he lay basking in the afternoon sun. The young boy had to ask his grandfather why the dog seemed so com-fortable and yet it whined when he moved. The grandfather told his grandson that where the dog lay was a rusty nail, every now and then it would dig into the old dog causing him some discomfort, hence the whining. The young boy again puzzled by this said “why doesn’t the dog just move if it’s hurting” to which the grandfa-ther said, well you see young man, it appears not to hurt that much.

This may appear a strange story and for you reading. I’m sure it would make sense for the dog just to move. In the work I do, I spend a lot of time with people who whine about their current situation and I’m always keen to sup-port them in finding ways to make a change and make their situation improve. However I do come across people who are happy to whine and take no action, maybe it doesn’t hurt enough to do anything about it.

So my question for you is this, what do you have in your life right now that you would like to change, what are the things that maybe you whine about but as of yet have done nothing about changing? Maybe now is exactly the right time to make a change. Consider how much better things would be if you took action on the things that can cause you to whine. Think

A

about how good you could feel taking action to make improvements, imagine how your life could change positively if you made a decision to change something. It’s coming to the close of the year, what do want to be different in 2016?Let’s stop the whining and make a change, 2016 could be a tremendous year, however we may need to let go of things from 2015 that don’t add positively to our lives. Let’s move away from the rusty nail.

If you have any questions about how to make these changes contact [email protected] or follow me on twitter @dasaladarren

Hello Lifestyle Readers,

The festive season in nearly upon us once again – it seems to come round quicker and quicker every year! As always, I’ve got plenty of projects on the go but it will be nice to have some rest and relaxation over Christmas.

As a big tennis fan, it was an incredible experience to head off to the O2 to watch the world’s best players go head-to-head in the ATP Tour finals.

On a sporting note, I’m a regular attendee of various sports awards around the country so it was a pleasure to present an award at this year’s Nottingham Sports Awards. It’s a fantastic sporting city with plenty to be proud of and the categories covered everyone from top athletes to up-and-coming junior sportspeople.

Lots of money was raised for charity on that evening, as well as another event I attended – the Lloyds Bank Children in Need quiz night. I would personally like to thank Relationships Manager Andy Lewis for inviting me, as well as for all his hard work with me over the years.

Regular readers will know that I mention paint-spraying specialists Wagner often in this column, but as I am closely connected with the business, it’s a pleasure to see them continue to go from strength to strength. Yet again, they have overseen record sales so if you have any painting jobs in or out of the house, look no further!

Work is still in progress at my dream house and it will be fantastic to finally finish after months of work in the planning stages. I’m also very pleased to announce a new addition to my family – a new kitten called Phoebe!

All the best,Craig.

Late wing picture brackets x 4 per large • frame.20mm & 45mm screws• 6mm raw plugs• 15mm & 45mm screws•

TOOLSHammer Action drill• 4V cordless drill/driver• Screw driver drill bit• 2mm drill bit• 6mm masonry drill bit• Spirit level• Tape• Pencil•

Once you have decided the height and location of your picture frame you will need to apply at least 4 wing brackets to the rear of the frame. Set these out about 6 inches from each corner on the left and right side of the frame.

Hold one of the brackets in place and using your small 4V drill and 2mm drill bit, drill some pilot holes in the rear of the frame to stop it from splitting when you try to fix the bracket to the frame, then drive the 15mm screws through the bracket fixing them to the rear of the frame. Once all 4 are in position, hold the frame against the wall and mark the wall through the other hole on the bracket that stands proud of the frame.

Drill your mark on the wall with the hammer ac-tion drill and 6mm masonry drill bit, apply a 6mm raw plug, and screw your first 45mm screw through one of the brackets - this will take the weight of the frame. Using your spirit level, level up the frame and mark the wall where the other 3 brackets will be fixed.

Repeat the same drilling, plugging and screwing into the wall on the other 3 brackets and your frame should now be firmly fixed level to the wall.

As another year draws to a close it is, of course, a time for reflection and for giving thanks to

everything we have.

Running any business is not an easy task, much strength, discipline and determination is required, but most of all, you need hope and optimism. It can also be quite lonely because there are so few hours not working, meaning time spent with others has to be prioritised.

Fortunately the Christmas season is all about reconnecting, which I plan to do, with all of those those people whose time with me has been sacrificed. The week long break between Christmas and New Year is a time to cherish with loved ones, and appreciate my gorgeous family, whom I adore. It’s also a time to refuel ideas for driving my business forward into the New Year with heightened optimism.

I have grown Lifestyle magazine into the most successful and longest running independent glossy magazine for the city of Liverpool. It hasn’t been an easy ride, but on the most part, enjoyable. Going into my eighth year of consistent publishing is something I am incredibly proud of.

I have learned a lot about the business of advertising and realise that to grow a business, one needs to advertise. I can sympathise with our advertisers as I too pay for advertising campaigns. But how you advertise is key to the success. Anyone can slap an advert in print, but creating a campaign that gives the reader a lasting impression is a skill that myself and my team are experts in. Successful advertising creates positive memories and feelings that influence our

behaviour. Talking about a brand over the dinner table means that advertising campaign has worked.

I end this year with a new business: AmandamossPR. I dare to say there are few people with as much business experience about growing a brand from its launch. With my contacts and creativity I can confidently grow your business, and working alongside Lifestyle magazine and the events, there are lots of platforms to increase your profile. Which leads me very quickly to say I am looking forward to announcing the finalists for The Liverpool Lifestyle Awards in association with Not Just Travel North West in the New Year. Now there’s something to get excited about over dinner.

Be memorable.

Wishing you a wonderfully Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
