When players join Liverpool FCA there is an expectation of quality training and player development. As a coaching staff we take our responsibilities and the demands of developing the next generation seriously. We know we have to make the most of the time we have with Players. They come to us with high hopes and expectations, and it’s on our shoulders to deliver a great soccer experience - one they learn and grow from. We’re constantly asking ourselves if we are getting the best out of our Players. To help achieve that goal we use a formula that is focused on designing economical practices which allow the children to think, express themselves and develop their cognitive skills.

The value of learning, for children and coaches alike... The Liverpool Way!

Training focus for Feb? Want to know what your child is learning this month? Academy teams will focus on attacking through center midfield with a focus on wide play. The U13-14 teams will also focus on Attacking through Wide midfield but also focused on change point of attack.

Please ask your child questions regarding practices to reinforce their learning. Then look for those concepts during matches.

Please contact your Team Coach or Manager should you have questions or concerns.

Our philosophy is against prescriptive coaching, which allows little room for children to think for themselves. “I want you to...” is being replaced with “Can you show me...” Since soccer is a problem solving game, this approach encourages players to figure out and apply the best solution for the various situations they encounter during each game. We encourage the freedom and the permission to express themselves and learn from their own mistakes. This is called ‘guided discovery’. It’s the old adage about guiding the children to the answer rather than just presenting it to them. This is, essentially, the coach delivering a session that develops every aspect of that child’s game, and is based around development of knowledge and game understanding. Methods can be verbal or visual, and vary between constant, variable and random practices which are based on flexibility in search of the best solutions. As teachers of soccer, we look to explore new ways, ideas, theories and research. As Director of Coaching, I recommend all our coaches at any level to work towards their next level of qualification. At LFCASC, the main methods we use involve Socratic

Continued from front page … questioning, ‘observation and feedback’ and ‘guided discovery’, where the coaches offers challenges for players to solve. Your coach should have written an Individual Soccer Educational Plan (ISEP) for your child. In essence, you should know the two biggest areas that your child should focus most on developing. If not, please request this from your coach. The Directors of Coaching conducts mandatory coaches’ education sessions to all our coaches. We provide lesson plans to all our coaches and coaches are required to adapt and even make their own plans for their teams. The sessions themselves usually follow a structure of warm-up (5-10mins), technique (10-15mins), skill-related practices (under game-realistic pressure), 2v2s, 3v3s (20mins), and then depending on age group final 4v4 or 5v5 small-sided games or larger numbered games (20mins). We end with a debrief and review of the skills taught during that session. At Liverpool we are grounded in these approaches, and that is helping to change some perceptions. The soccer community is realizing that we are working hard to develop each and every player. We’re trying to encourage an improvement in the quality of coaching provision, giving children a better environment and an opportunity to further develop their skills. We don’t focus on being the biggest club, or winning state championships, simply that children have learnt and developed,
