* »V kraljestvu Zlatoroga« (In the kingdom of the goldhorn) is the first Slovene feature film filmed in 1931 and directed by Janka Ravnik based on the script by Juš Kozak.

When we first watch the film and if we like it we go to the cinema again. And, of course we watch the second part, which we usually like as well. Then, the third part follows. Top notch. We become fans of this movie. We recommend it to our friends and acquaintances. We search for the home page on the Internet and the names of the main actors. We buy posters and t-shirts containing phrases from the films.

And which film are we talking about? This is the hit film entitled živahna doživetja julijskih alp (lively adventures in the julian alps)! The movie was filmed in various locations in the tourist destination Kranjska Gora »we leave the decision to you« where just about everybody participates in it! You can be a key actor or merely a passive spectator, while sometimes it’s most pleasant to simply be a walk-on. No one is ever bored in this film!

Kranjska Gora is the main location of the hit movie which together with the surroundings and actors offers everything which its title promises: Lively Adventures in the Julian Alps.

And why a third part? Let’s begin with Triglav, the largest Slovene peak which lies in the Triglav National Park. Now let’s continue with three places associated with Kranjska Gora and the shining structure of the tourist diamond:

* Mojstrana with the traditional small village Dovje,

* Gozd Martuljek with the astonishing serenity of Špik and

* Rateče as a starting point for Planica and Tromeja (Three-Country Border).

Our tourist hit comprises three regions, three nationalities and three countries. The juncture of three worlds, the Slovanic, Germanic and Romanic gives birth to an explosion of new adventures...May we entice you to Kranjska Gora with the three coloured italic lines in our tourist logo to take part in lively adventures in the Julian Alps!

The inhabitants of Kranjska Gora were called Borovci for a long time, perhaps because they arrived out of Borovlje in Carinthia, or simply because of their deforesting pine forests (borovje) upon their arrival...The region which hides the emerald Lake of Zelenci, the second source of the Sava River so inspired the English explorer Sir Humphrey Davy that he marked the surroundings of Podkoren with the words »my old nest.«

The history of Kranjska Gora reaches back to the second half of the 14th century when the inhabitants began chopping down the forests to a larger extent, transforming them into farm land and pastures for sheep and cattle. The area gained strategic significance during World War I when the military road across the 1611 m high Vršič pass from the Sava to Soča Valleys was constructed by Russian prisoners. Kranjska Gora acquired its fame as a tourist region through the construction of the railroad and its first visitors. Somewhat later, ski jumping and ski flying in Planica carried the name of the area and valley throughout the world. This encoura ged a blossoming tourist activity in the Kranjska Gora region especially when the first cable cars were built on the sides of the Vitranc at the end of the fifties.

Even older than Kranjska Gora is the mysterious village of Podkoren which hides wonderful tales from times when tourism was still foreign to the Zgornjesavska Valley. A paved medieval road led through the village which in the

15th century served as a connection between the countrysides of Carniola and Carinthia. A postal carriage brought inhabitants news from far off places across Korensko sedlo (Korensko Saddle) during the era of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. Until the year 1990 when the Karavanke tunnel was built, the road through the Korensko sedlo presented the main traffic connection with central and northern Europe.

Kranjska Gora and Podkoren are linked by at least three things: a common history, a common position on the three-border between Slovenia, Austria and Italy and a common tourist boost due to resounding achievements of »the heroes of the white sheer slopes« at the annual Alpine skiing World Cup.For tourists, both regions particularly represent an excellent combination of the Kranjska Gora cosmopolitan pulse and the idyllic serenity of Koren.Kranjska Gora is the cultural and social centre of the region while Podkoren is its Alpine heart...

Dovje and Mojstrana are villages which as twins always stick together but differ considerably in regard to tempera-ment. Each on its own bank of the Sava River and located on the main traffic arteries through the Zgornjesavska Valley are starting points for discovering the Julian Alps and the Karavanke Mountains. The Mojstrana story began in the 14th century when the mining and ironworks trades began to develop, however nowadays the area is more known for numerous expert alpinists and skiers. Three breathtaking Alpine valleys lead from Mojstrana into the heart of the Julian Alps to the highest Slovene peak, Triglav (2864 m). The Krma Valley offers alpinists the most facilitated access to Triglav and excellent terrain for skiing tours, the Kot Valley enchants with its peacefulness and remoteness in the shade of the northern wall of Rjavina while Vrata, according to Aljaž the most beautiful valley in the world surprises with the powerful Triglav northern wall.Dovje is a village with a thousand year history and agricul tural tradition. Squeezed under the steep side of the

Kara vanke Mountains, industrious villagers formed terraced fields in its foothills through the centuries. The village has maintained numerous Alpine architectural characteristics. The semi-circular entrance doors of farm houses are par-ticularly interesting from which hospitality exudes.

A number of alpinists, victims of Triglav and its surrounding mountain regions are buried at the cemetery alongside the parish of St. Michael.

Jakob Aljaž (1845 – 1927) served as mayor of Dovje for 38 years building cabins on Vrata and Kredarica, the tower on Triglav and routes into the Julian Alps. He was also a composer, poet and national initiator. A memorial room is dedicated to him at the vicarage, while his monument can be seen by the main road between the two villages.

Triglav represents a symbol of Slovenianism and was threatened throughout its entire ethnic history until Slovenia’s independence in 1991. It was this fact that led the Dovje mayor, Jakob Aljaž to buy the Triglav and Kredarica peaks. Thus no one could prevent him from setting up a tower containing essential equipment in 1895 thus »maintaining the Slovenian soul of the Slovene mountains.«

During both world wars, royal hunting grounds were located in the Krma Valley which hosted numerous European royalty. The Yugoslavian king, Aleksander Karadjordević shot a white chamois here. According to hunting superstitions this constituted the last hunted prey. The beauty of the landscape was also admired by Prince Charles who rushed to the place in 1998.

Gozd Martuljek and Srednji Vrh are both stories in them-selves. Long ago Carinthian herdsmen pastured their herds here. After World War I, railroad men renamed the village situated along the stream into Gozd Martuljek. The settle-ment Srednji Vrh arose during the times of Turkish inva-sions as can be gathered in the house names – Pri Merkeljnu, Pri Vahu. In times long gone, a pilgrimage route led through the Zgornjesavska Valley to Višarje. A footpath led through Rute accross the Vršič pass to Trenta, and a cargo and postal route via Koren to Carynthia.

Following World War I, there were 19 mills and 4 sawmills in Rute; residents were also involved in farming and lumber harvesting. Numerous coal excavations were made for the needs of the blacksmith’s and iron trades. All these changes were overseen by the Martuljek and Špik mountain group, whose peaks lead down among steep

northern walls into the Zgornjesavska Valley. The view to the slim rocky pyramid of Špik is powerful with the display exuding a special charm. The most beautiful view of the Martuljek group is from Srednji Vrh.

»Martuljek is a corner in itself. You will search fruitlessly for a decent comparison. This is a wild majestic and a powerful song of nature, an Alpine cathedral of combined growing out of the Sava Valley and reaching up into heaven,« was the description given by Dr. Miha Potočnik in the book Srečanje z gorami (Meeting with the Mountains).

Rateče is distinguished by its position alongside the three- border of Italy and Austria and Slovenia, for the main road flows under the village bringing you across the Italian border and along Kanalski Valley (La Val Canale, Italy). On the southern side of Rateče, the vista opens up into the Planica Valley surrounded by the high peaks of the Julian Alps. At the end of the valley, lies the Tamar from which the first source of the Sava Dolinka, the Nadiža Waterall flows out from under Ponce. The village has an expressed Alpine climate. Winters are long and cold, however its favourable position alongside the foothills of the Karavanke forests and pastures offers visitors an abundant number of sunny days, suitable for walking in the mountain forests and pastures.Rateče manuscripts were discovered here dating from the second half of the 14th century. The originals are stored in Klagenfurt, while copies are on display at the church of St. Thomas in Rateče. The manuscript of Rateče or Klagenfurt

is one of the oldest written records in the Slovene language and thus an important historical recollection of the Slovene folk. Planica is best known for the largest ski jumping hill in the world where new records are set almost every year. It was at Planica, that the first human in history jumped over 100 m on skis, later also exceeding the 200 m distance. The Planica organisers prepare the hill for new surprising results each year…

More information on the regions within the scope of the tourist destination Kranjska Gora can be found at the web address: www.kranjska-gora.si

Once you experience the atmosphere of Planica, you will never forget it.Similarly, you will always remember the song which thunders out fromthe throats of thousands of spectators each summer: »Heroes of Planica fly likebirds.« The composition waswritten by one ofthe most renowned authors of Slovene ethnic entertainment music, Slavko Avsenik who adopted Planica as his own and vice versa.

active adventures

The story of Robinson Crusoe could have taken place in the Zgornjesavska Valley. You can step from the well established tourist infrastructure to establish authentic contact with nature at any time. Tempera-tures are pleasant and the freshness of the Alpine air will ensure you exultation when uncovering numerous attractions of the valley. You will surely be offered a snack at the tourist farms. There is no doubt that you will enjoy yourself. We guarantee you much fun during your »Robinson Crusoe« adventures.

summer

Walking rules supreme among summer activities. There are enough routes from easy and recreational walks to serious Alpine traks which demand experience, suitable equipment and an Alpine guide. The hiking map with suggested hiking routes can be gotten at Tourist information centres in Kranjska Gora, Mojstrana and Rateče. Would

you perhaps be interested in trying Nordic walking, an in-creas ingly favourite option to free walking? Instructors and walking poles are available.Almost as popular in the summer is cycling – the fresh whistle of the Alpine air when making a descent or riding on the pass. What could be better after a hot uphill ride? You can decide for lazy pedalling or the most demanding trips into the heart of the Alpine valleys. You’ll sweat and also get a suntan on the steep slopes of the Karavanke Mountains. From the cycling paths of the three countries starting at the three-border with Austria and Italy and Slovenia you can stop off also for a visit to Bled. With the cycling map and a backpack lunch you might get to know the Zgornjesavska Valley in the best way. Trails have been prepared all the way to Mojstrana. You can set off on a number of possible off-trails leading from the well-maintained trails.

For those thirsty for adrenaline, the cycling park in Kranjska Gora offers Alpine freestyle enjoyment with adrenaline descents via tables, jumps, swings and other obstacles. You take the Vitranc 1 cableway to the top of the cycling park and let yourself go on a wild descent. Those without bicycles can revel in the descent on a summer bobsled run called Besna Pehta.

active adventures

The beauty of the landscape can perhaps best be viewed on horseback. Even if it’s your first time, you’ll be sure to enjoy it. With an experienced guide, you will soon graduate from the rink to one of the riding trails leading all the way to Jesenice, Radovljica, Bled... If you opt for kayaking, rafting or canyoning on a crystal clear river, the Soča is not far, just a jump across Vršič. The same water sports might also interest you a bit more downstream on the Sava River. For all those who can not live without golf, the right address is a golf practice course with four playing fields, practice areas and putting greens at the confluence of the Pišnica and Sava Rivers, where a golf course with nine holes will be built in the next few years.

The Zgornjesavska Valley is also a paradise for fishermen for the Alpine rivers and streams offer numerous possibilities for fishing. If you’re a real fisherman, you’ll of course let your catch back into the river or stream. Thisis not a must for you may take up to three fish and have them for dinner. The Pišnica and Bistrica Rivers in Kranjska Gora are popular for fly fishing. The same applies to photo hunting of animals. An experienced guide will enable you to see the animals in their natural environments. If all these activities fail to offer a challenge you can try alpinism and climb the peaks on which Slovene boys test their skills before setting off on ascents to the Himalayan peaks.

winter

Kranjska Gora is in no way merely a romantic winter des-tination although it is true that the snow falling from above transforms the area into a white wonderland. The white soul of Kranjska Gora has been and will remain Alpine skiing. A distinguishing feature of the Kranjska Gora skiingoffer is the varied terrain which offers quality skiing for both beginners and expert skiers.Kranjska Gora is known for its quick access to skiing delights: one could say that you step right out of bed onto the slopes. There’s only a beach of snow between your hotel and the slopes which sometimes lures you to bathe in the winter sun instead of ski. At the same time, you can keepan eye on your little ones. At the snow kindergarten, children with the aid of the children’s lift (baby lift) and various animated obstacles will quickly »feel at home on skis«.

You can’t ski? No problem. If you have the willpower, we’llgive you a patient ski instructor and lend you the skiing equipment so that you can let yourself go on the beginner’s hill. Make the decision and you will be awarded with a

wonderful experience! With time, you’ll advance along the scale of demanding terrain and perhaps one day set off for the competitive polygon in Podkoren, the scene of an annual competition in Alpine skiing. For those placing contact with nature above speed, there are over 40 km of cross-country skiing trails set up which will bring you under all Kranjska Gora ski slopes, past the source of the Sava River, under the ski jumping hills of Planica and on to Tamar. As a matter of fact, the entire Zgornjesavska Valley is a Nordic paradise for you can also ski to Gozd Martuljek and Mojstrana, while the trails in Krnica and Radovna are »soul food«. Cross-country skiing will especially seduce you once you gaze upon the snowy winter walls and peaks. We could say the same for ski mountaineering. Possibilities for this primary form of skiing are more than abundant in the Zgornjesavska Valley. Recreational skiers can ski down the friendly Karavanke slopes while extremists can delight in the crests of the Julian Alps. Try out one of the suggested ski mountaineering routes from the Mojstrana or Kotovo sedlo, from below the Kriška wall or Triglav ski mountaineering from Kredarica into Krma or skiing from Dovška Baba.Climbing on the Lucifer is not a descent to hell! Lucifer is a renowned ice waterfall in Martuljek which is ranked as

one of the favourite destinations of climbers of ice waterfalls. We suggest the conquering of one of the ice waterfalls under Prisank and in Tamar, of course with a guide and for beginners, test your ability on the artificially frozen wall in the Mlačca Gorge in Mojstrana.Let’s conclude with sledding, the most romantic of winter disciplines. In the evening, a four wheel vehicle will bring you to one of the sledding area, on the three-border area, Macesnovec, Gozd Martuljek or Krnica with only the »sweet part« of the adventure remaining: the drop into the valley in the light of torches. However this is not yet the end of the delights our winter destination has to offer: you can choose among day and night snow walks, walks with torches, bike rides on the snow (snowbiking), ice skating, swimming in covered swimming pools...

Ingemar Stenmark, Bojan Križaj, Alberto Tomba and Jure Košir are only a few of the unforgotten heroes of the white slopes, winners on the ski slopes of Kranjska Gora. To win the Vitranc Trophy, they overcame one of the most demanding ski slopes of the Alpine skiing World Cup.

adventures in discovering nature and culture

The first wonderful route can be found within the scope of the Triglav National Park – the Triglavska Bistrica Route in Vrata is an adventure of nature where you will delight in the Peričnik Waterfall, Galerije, the gable of Vrata and the powerful Triglav northern wall. In any case the conquering of Triglav up this wall is an accomplishment for which several days should be reserved and also to experience the atmosphere of common accommodations in one of the mountain cabins. A secret adventure can also be had in the Kot Valley whereby the path leads you through the Radovna Valley to Vintgar. There are a lot of sights along the way: Gogal’s Linden Tree, Psnak flourmill and sawmill and the Pocar Homestead, the setting for numerous events.

Those of you revelling in the view of the precipitous walls must experience the demanding path to Prisank from Vršič. Those who prefer a safer view can uncover the attractions on the path to Slemenova špica, a meditational secluded panoramic forest walk from Vršič to the lakes with a view of the majestic Jalovec. The green spring landscape invites you on walks around the Rateče surroundings – allowing you views of the cha-r acteristic Alpine architectural heritage, continuing on the forest path towards Tromeja, through fields towards Planica and onwards to Tamar up to Zelenci or across the Italian border to the Mangart Lakes (Laghi di Fusine).

The cultural heritage of the Zgornjesavska Valley can also be experienced through a walk through the centre of Kran jska Gora past the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary towards the Liznjek Homestead.

Perhaps the most beautiful path in the Zgornjesavska Valley is the path to the first and second Martuljek waterfalls. We suggest you to visit both although many people stop at the first one probably also because of the home-made lunch at Jasenje. Not far removed, the Finžgar Chapel greets you, named after the writer and clergyman Fran Saleški Finžgar. Suitably rested, you can continue towards the second wa-terfall or to »Pod Srce« (Under the Heart) where above you, the Špik wall rises like a mythological being.

Beneath you, the unforgettable natural beauty and a feeling of human insignificance will take you over. The view of the setting up oglarska kopa (charcoal dig) will cause you to forget these slightly melancholic thoughts, remnants of times when life moved more slowly...

A legend says that pagan wives prophesised the fates of the people of Kranjska Gora at birth. One of them foretold that the son of a hunter would shoot a Goldenhorn which lived in the surrounding mountains. The pagan wives were angry at the prophecy and transformed the pagan girl into a cliff which can be admired in the wall of the Prisank.

adventures in wellbeing

Hotels in the Kranjska Gora tourist destination offer a wide range of different water delights – in addition to swimming in contemporary swimming pools, one can also enjoy and relax in the whirlpools. The soothing water flows will free you from all bodily stress giving you abundant élan and renewed energy.Wellness centres in the hotels of the Zgornjesavska Valley are especially well equipped with saunas. As the Finns say, these are »holy« places healing the body and soul. You can choose from among Finnish, Turkish and infrared saunas. After a pleasant warming of the body, turn yourself over to the experienced hands of masseuses of traditional and Thai massages, additionally spoiling yourself in the solarium or with cosmetic services. What is more important for a good feeling: good food or clean air? Both! After a pleasant walk through the Alpine pastures, you will probably feel a healthy pang of hunger. Cultural delights are definitely a part of wellness since love as they say goes through the stomach. The tables at the inns, restaurants and tourist farms are abundantly loaded with both genuine home-made food and dishes from the Italian and Austrian-German culinary arts, fish specialties and top international cuisine.

You can taste the best Slovene wines and strong spirits at the wine cellars and specialised establishments whereby you can satisfy your soul. A little home-made schnapps or blueberry liqueur won’t do any harm lifting your soul high above the Alpine summits. Alternative medicine may also help you if you believe in its powers. The last factor which can contribute to your complete relaxation is however the people. You are in a country where hotel personnel are always prepared to jump to your aid in eventual smaller or larger quandaries, where you will be spoiled with one hundred and one signs of attention with a rose on your bed, a sweet under your pillow...

In the past the Zgornjesavska Valley was considered a natural climatic health spa made possible by the suitable above sea altitude, Alpine air and an adequate number of sunny days. These were the beginnings of today’s wellness offers in Kranjska Gora.

adventures in business meetings and social events

An organisation oriented towards the future must enable its people to slacken the rhythm so as to dedicate attention to planning and preparations. This means that management must cease the habit of unending business...*

* From the cult book of Ken Blanchard and Terry Waghorn: Mission Possible or How to Create a Superior Organisation While There’s Still Time

The aforementioned business advice is realised in full through the offer of Kranjska Gora congressional tourism. This is certainly the right choice for all those desiring peace for themselves and business partners and a location to freshen and supplement knowledge, train professional teams and come up with new ideas in far from everyday pressures.

The Kranjska Gora destination could also be renamed »bio« congressional tourism for it is never directed at crowded business events with a thousand participants but to quality business events of a medium calibre. The largest conference halls for business events at Kranjska Gora hotels can accommodate a good 350 participants. The halls are all contemporarily outfitted and offer adaptable spaces for business events, expert help in organisation and quality catering services.

Thus a number of opportunities for organising seminars, congresses, lectures, workshops, press conferences and other gatherings are available.

Greatness does not always lie in size: many times smaller halls are more appropriate for brainstorming where partic-ipants can chat or take a time out during a demanding training session with the wonderful view through the win-dow, outlining the Alpine ridges...

The exception is the Vitranc sports hall in which meetings for more than a thousand participants at leading and sports events, larger seminars, congresses, banquets and entertainment events can be organised. The contemporary sports hall is also suitable for carrying out various sports disciplines such as handball, indoor soccer, basketball, volleyball, floorball, badminton and table tennis.

The Zgornjesavska Valley, with its untouched nature and numerous possibilities for activity offers wonderful possibilities for organising »team building« meetings, both in the form of adrenaline sports or relaxing group activities. You can prepare the program yourself or we can organise it for you.

We ensure you that a business gathering in this way will definitely bear fruit, giving birth to a new idea if not the complete vision of the company, joining co-workers into a firmer collective...

adventures for the Family

Sleme

Along the paths of Triglav fairytales Winter beach on the slopes Land of the Dwarfs

Do you read your children fairytales at night? Then they will certainly enjoy the adventures of the brave shepherd boy Kekec. Is it a coincidence that one of the most adored Slovene children’s writers, whose books have been translated into a number of foreign languages, was born in 1884 in Kranjska Gora?

No, not at all. The Zgornjesavska Valley with its mystical past, full of mythological creatures certainly influences the development of writers and expands children’s fantasies. For the latter, we have prepared a number of lively adven tures which will surely excite even more relieving you from entertaining your youngest family members for a few hours.

In Kekčeva dežela (Kekec’s Wonderland), children from 3 to 10 years of age are greeted by Kekec, the shepherd boy, who serves them with sour milk and buckwheat mush and shows them his cabin telling them some tales of far gone days. Kekec also takes the children to meet other heroes

from the Vandot Alpine world: the evil Bedanec, the herbal aunt Pehta, the blue Vitranc, the friendly Mojca and the fearful Rožle.In the secret folds of Gozd Martuljek, dwarves appear especially for your children giving them clues that they are on the right path which will lead them to the door of Škratova dežela (The Land of Dwarves) where they then introduce themselves to the children. On the Triglavske pravljice path (Triglav fairytales), in Dovje and in Mojstra na, your little ones will learn seven new fairy tales and sweeten their tooth with large cookies.
