ADVANCING THE COMMON GOOD IN THE GREATER CAPITAL REGION

United Way of the Greater Capital Region is celebrating our 90th anniversary this year. Since 1925, we have helped residents of our community with issues that affect their quality of life. We would like to thank our donors, corporate partners, funded partners and volunteers for their dedication to LIVEUNITED and improve OUR Capital Region.

In 2014-2015 the challenges we faced together were large and there are no simple or quick solutions. But that is why there is the United Way. We apply funding, expertise and programmatic solutions to the issues that matter most, to help the most people.

We start with the building blocks for a good life. Our work starts by making sure people meet their basic needs for food, housing and safety. It continues with helping children gain a quality education and making sure people have a stable income and good health. These issues cannot be handled by any single agency but they can be tackled through partnerships. The greatest example of this was our work with Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM), the Wright Family Foundation, the Carlilian Foundation and the Upper NY Conference of the United Methodist Church to expand summer meal sites at parks, schools and other central locations with two Summer Lunch Trucks, which directly delivered meals to children in need. These colorful box trucks made scheduled 15-minute stops at 15 locations throughout Schenectady, Monday through Friday. The mobile trucks alone provided more than 22,000 meals to local children. Throughout the Capital Region, summer meals for kids skyrocketed to more than 100,000 meals served. Our partnership identified the critical need for proper nutrition for our children during the summer and, UNITED, we worked to implement a solution.

As exciting as that project was, it is only a portion of the great works our PARTNERSHIPS achieved in 2014-2015.

• The 2-1-1 program, a database of over 5,000 health and human services programs in a 12 county region, fielded over 17,000 calls and 84,500 web inquiries from neighbors, co-workers and everyday people in need of a hand up, not a hand out.

• The CA$H Coalition of the Greater Capital Region completed 13,192 tax returns for low income and working families, totaling over $23 million in refunds and credits --- dollars that are reinvested back into our community! This was achieved because 237 volunteers donated in excess of 8,000 hours.

Labor and United Way, Partners in Meeting Human Need

United Way of the Greater Capital Region does not assess our member agencies any dues or fees for their participation in our federation.

In times of tragedy, routine expenses can become a major inconvenience and source of stress. United Way’s Emergency Labor Assistance Program (ELAP) is a partnership between local organized labor unions and United Way of the Greater Capital Region, designed to meet temporary financial needs of community members when emergencies occur.

This year, United Way and ELAP worked with the ATU Local 1321, IUE – CWA Local 81359 and Local 301, CSEA Local 690 and IUPAT District Council 9 in assisting 25 brothers and sisters faced with emergencies. Together we helped with BASIC NEEDS including food security and housing (house fires, flooding and power disconnects). We helped with HEALTH issues such as medical emergencies for union members and their children ranging from cancer to surgery. We helped a family impacted by a fatal car accident.

Once again, together, we accomplish more than any one person or agency can do alone. That’s what it means to #LIVEUNITED.

Strategic Investments United Against Hunger

Through a partnership with Schenectady Inner City Ministry (SICM), the Wright Family Foundation, the Carlilian Foundation and the Upper NY Conference of the United Methodist Church, two mobile meal trucks were purchased and launched during the summer of 2015.

The impact was immediate:60% increase in total mobile meals served

U nited Way has been dedicated to addressing childhood hunger

since 2013. The data shows that of the 42,000 children who eat

free/reduced price meals during the school year, only 1 in 7 access free

summer meals. United Way and its partners set out to bridge this gap by

increasing the number of meal sites and starting alternate methods of

meal delivery. While we have made great strides in the number of meals

served and the number of at-risk children reached, we can still do more

when we create partnerships and Live United.
