CLAYMONT CONNECTION
The 2017 Teacher of the Year is Janet Mitchell Warden. Jan has served as the Claymont High School library media specialist since 1998 and also assumed the role of Library Supervisor for the entire Claymont School District in 2009.
She received her Bachelor’s in Education from Ohio University and her Master’s in education at Kent State University. She is licensed in Elementary (K-8), Educational Media (1-8) and Library Media (K-12). She also continues to take graduate credit courses.
Jan is also a professional development trainer for
certified and non-certified staff. She was previously employed with the Tuscarawas County Educational Service Center, as a computer/curriculum consultant; Educational Technology Services (ETSEO) in Athens and Cambridge City Schools.
She was instrumental in Claymont receiving the 2001 INFOhio Vision Award. She was the 2012 Ohio Educational Library/Media Association Librarian of the Year and received the 2008 ALA/YALSA Teen Read Week Celebration Honorable Mention.
Jan has been instrumental in obtaining several grants for the Claymont City Schools libraries including: Haman Family Foundation, Rosenberry Foundation, Buckeye Book Fair, Raising the Bar Award to Claymont High School for technology equipment, LSTA grant for Claymont Junior High School Library for computers and project, Ohio Library Foundation Ruth Hess Memorial Grant for Claymont High School, Picturing America Art prints and several Claymont Foundation Teacher Grants.
She had had the following articles published: “Teaching the U.S. Constitution with Television: Making a Visual Impact,” Ohio Media Spectrum; “Making Tough Decisions About All Those Video Programs,” Ohio Media Spectrum and “An Awakening,” Ohio Media Spectrum.
Jan is the Chairman of the Tuscarawas Area Media Specialists (TAMS), member of the Ohio Educational Library Media Association where she has served as a Board Member and conference presenter, INFOhio where she served as a Board Member and is a District I-Coach, American Library Association and American Association of School Librarians.
She is an active member of Dover First United Methodist Church where she serves on the Scholarship and Library Committees, is the past chairman for Education Committee, serves as a Children’s Sermon presenter and volunteers for the Community Food Bank and Salvation Army Kitchen. Jan is an active member of the Tuscarawas County One Book/One Community Project and served as chair of the 2015 OBOC Project.
Jan and her husband Steve reside in Dover and will celebrate 36 years of marriage in June. Her older son, Mitch, teaches at Dover. Her younger son, Brock, passed away in 2002 at the age 17 due to complications of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. The 2017 Alumnus of the Year Award is
Anthony “Tony” Berni, (C’91) Tony is a partner in Ernst & Young’s Tax Services
practice with more than 21 years of professional experience advising public and private companies in numerous industries on strategic tax planning, tax compliance and tax accounting and reporting matters.
Since joining Ernst & Young in 1995, he has served in a number of leadership roles within the Firm’s Assurance, Tax Compliance and Tax Consulting practices. He is also an assistant lecturer in the University of Akron’s Masters of Taxation graduate program and serves on the University of Akron’s School of Accountancy Advisory Board and Masters of Taxation Governance Board. Tony also previously served as a Director of the Tax Club of Cleveland.
Tony is a CPA and member of the Ohio Society and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Baldwin-Wallace University and a Master’s in Taxation from The University of Akron. Tony also serves as Director at the Milestones Autism Resources non-profit organization and on the Glenmoor Country Club Board of Governors.
Tony resides in Canton with his wife Robyn, a Marketing Manager at Timken, have a son, Victor, and a dog, Sonoma. Tony and Robyn are also members of the United Way Tocqueville Society.

The Teacherof the Year Award is given to a teacher in the Claymont School System. This award is based on the quality of teaching, impact on students, commitment to the educational process and the pursuit of lifetime learning and is based on nomination by his/her peers.
The 2017 Distinguished Alumnus Award winner is Timothy Reynolds (C’91)Tim served ten years of active duty in the USAF. He has lived in Texas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Kansas,
and Okinawa, Japan where his sons were born. He deployed six times to Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Horn of Africa. He has logged 779 combat hours during 128 combat missions. He has been in the Air Force Reserve since 2005 where he worked as a war planner and currently serves as an Admissions Liaison Officer for the United States Air Force Academy.
Tim is currently a pilot for United Parcel Service (UPS) with over 8,000 hours of flight time. He has flying time in the Beech 400, Boeing 707, 727, 737, 747, Airbus 300, and will attend training for the MD-11 this summer. He will fly international routes including Sydney, Australia; Dubai; Hong Kong and Cologne, Germany. He is the third youngest captain at UPS out of 2,700 pilots. He also serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the USAF Reserves.
He received his Bachelor’s in Political Science from the Citadel, Master’s in Business Administration from Webster University, Master’s in National Security Studies from the USAF Air Command and Staff College and Post Graduate studies from the USAF Air War College.
He was a Distinguished Graduate (top ten percent) from The Citadel and the number three overall graduate in the class of over 500. While working as an intern at the US State Department, he co-authored the book “Hidden Killers” about the global problem of land mines.
Tim received eight Air Medals for combat - the most awarded in the USAF from 2003-2004. He served as a USAF squadron commander, and was promoted four times to current rank of Lieutenant Col (O-5).
He has been a Middle School wrestling coach for 6 years and is a member of Saint Bernadette Catholic Church.
Tim and his Wife, Casey, a former Judge Advocate in the USAF, have three children, Bryant, John and Jillian. They reside in Prospect, Kentucky.
The 2017 Alumnus Achievement Award winner is Randy McGuire, (C’77) Randy is the Department Head for the Center for Advanced Aviation System Development with the MITRE
Corporation. He previously served as an Adjunct Professor of Systems Engineering at John Hopkins University. He received his Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics and his Master’s in Industrial & Systems Engineering
from Ohio University.Randy has been recognized for the development of airborne collision avoidance
system for commercial aircraft; leadership of joint Government/Industry aviation safety analysis team, development of airspace complexity and capacity model for US air traffic control system and development and analysis of terrain avoidance system for the country of Taiwan.
He is active with the Holy Comforter Episcopal Church where he has served as a member of the Vestry, chairman of the buildings and grounds committee, audio/video consultant, men’s fellowship group leader, youth confirmation class mentor, missionary to Honduras and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He also serves as a chief timer for the Northern Virginia Swim League and served as a girls’ basketball coach.
Randy and his wife Susan reside in Oakton, Virginia. They have four daughters – Lindsey, Kelsey, Colleen and Erin-Grace.
The 2017 Citizen of the Year Award winner is Christine Heakin Hasseman, a 1969 Claymont graduate.
Chris is currently an Account Executive for Hasseman Marketing and Communications. She attended the John Hondros Real Estate Academy in Columbus.
In 2006, Chris was instrumental in creating “Mover’s & Shaker’s,” an organization to promote awareness of Parkinson’s disease. She received the 2008 Chamber of Commerce Civic Service Award for her work with this organization. Through her work with “Mover’s & Shaker’s,” she has helped raise funds to sponsor a room in the renovated Trinity Hospital Twin City and to provide an exercise program, “Yuhr Move,” at Union Hospital for those suffering from neurological diseases.
She has also been a very active volunteer with the Uhrichsville Clay Museum.
Chris is married to Rod Hasseman (Claymont ’68) and they reside in Uhrichsville. They have four children – Kirby, Nicole, Zachary and Hillary. They have seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren, with two additional great-grandchildren to be born this summer.

Class of 2017 Claymont Foundation Scholarships“We are so humbled by the generous donations we have received to enable us to award scholarships totaling $91,500 this year,” stated Barb Bollon member of the scholarship committee. “This is such a great opportunity for our students. We are truly grateful to those donors who realize the importance of higher education.”
The Claymont Foundation is pleased to announce their 2017 Scholarship Award winners. A total of $44,500 has been awarded to Seniors at CHS and $47,000 has been awarded to Claymont graduates currently pursuing their higher education.
