FINDING THE CLOTILDA:A MERICA’S FINAL SL AVE SHIPT H U R S , F E B 2 7 | 7 : 3 0 P M | C O N V E R S AT I O N | $ 2 5
Discovered in 2019 in Alabama’s Mobile River, the schooner Clotilda smuggled
African captives into the U.S. in 1860, over 50 years after importing slaves
had been outlawed. Learn how this finding has illuminated a shameful
episode in American history and impacted the slaves’ descendants—and
how archaeologists used advanced technologies to find the ship—in this
conversation moderated by Debra Adams Simmons.

National Geographic Senior Photo Archivist Sara Manco and National
Geographic magazine contributing writer Nina Strochlic will share firsthand
accounts and never-before-seen images from our archives by and about the
women National Geographic photojournalists, writers, and explorers who defied
the expectations of their time and helped shape the way we see the world.
In September 2018, renowned cave photographer Robbie Shone joined an
expedition to explore Veryovkina, the deepest cave in the world at almost
7,300 feet, in the Caucasus Mountains. See stunning photographs of a place
few people have seen in person, and hear how a flood almost cost the team
their footage—and their lives.
Go beyond the “Becoming Jane” exhibition and see never-before-shared photos,
videos, and more from our archives and the Jane Goodall Institute’s collection.
This exclusive event will provide a fresh look at the legendary researcher turned
conservationist’s life and work in Gombe National Park with National Geographic Senior
Photo Archivist Sara Manco and National Geographic film archivist Karen Cerka.
To learn more about Jane Goodall, visit the “Becoming Jane” exhibition at the National Geographic Museum. Find out more on page 20.
