The Year of Saint Luke 15.05.16.
Pentecost Sunday (Sunday Readings: of year C ::: Weekdays of year 11(from Monday) ::: Breviary: Week 3)
Scripture: Acts 2: 1- 11
Psalm 103
R/. Send forth your Spirit, O Lord,
and renew the face of the earth..
Bless the Lord, my soul!
Lord God, how great you are,
How many are your works, O Lord!
The earth is full of your riches.
You take back your spirit, they die,
returning to the dust from which they came.
You send forth your spirit, they are created;
and you renew the face of the earth.
May the glory of the Lord last for ever!
May the Lord rejoice in his works!
May my thoughts be pleasing to him.
I find my joy in the Lord.
1 Corinthians 12: 3- 7 . 12 – 13
John 20: 19 – 23.
Intercession : Lord hear us
Response : Lord graciously hear us
A young man strolled into his living room one
afternoon with a chair under each arm and a settee on
his back. Shocked, his father asked, ‘Where on earth
did you get that?!’
‘Off an old man down the road,’ replied the boy.
Immediately his father jumped up and walloped him.
‘What was that for?’ screamed the lad in pain. ‘For
heaven’s sake!’ shouted his father. ‘What did I tell
you about taking suites from strangers?’
*************
A rabbi and a priest crash into each other at a four-
way junction. They both get out of their cars and look
at the wreck. They both thank God they are OK, and
the priest says, ‘This must be a sign that God wanted
us to meet.’ The rabbi says, ‘Yes, indeed, let’s drink.’
So the rabbi gets out some wine. They toast each
other and the priest drinks his glass. But the rabbi
doesn’t take a taste of his drink. The Priest asks ‘Why
aren’t you drinking?’ the Rabbi replies ‘I’m waiting
for the police.’
************
In a job interview for the police, the applicants are
shown a profile picture of a man, and the interviewer
says, ‘The job that you’re applying for requires
powers of observation. Make on observation about
this man.’ The first applicant enters and says, ‘This
man has just one ear.’ ‘Get out?’ screams the
interviewer. The second applicant enters and says,
‘This man has one ear.’ ‘Get out!’ screams the
interviewer again. Then the third applicant gets up to
go in for his interview. The first two guys are out
there and they tell him, ‘The guy that’s giving the
interview doesn’t like to hear that the man in the
picture has one ear.’ ‘Thanks for the tip,’ says the
third applicant. So the third applicant enters, stares at
the picture for a while and finally he says, ‘This man
wears contact lenses.’ The interviewer is impressed
and says, ‘Excellent observation. Tell me, how could
you tell?’ So the guy says, ‘Well, this man has just
one ear. How could he wear glasses?’

SILENCE
As priests, deacons and sisters working within the parish we are faced with a
pull from two sides: we regularly hear from one group of parishioners that
they find the noise of chatter before Mass distracting and even damaging to
their spiritual growth. Some people have left the parish stating those reasons.
If we talk about silence, we hear from (or are gossiped about by) parishioners
as making the church “unfriendly.” There’s no pleasing everybody, and there’s
some truth in both perspectives (except gossip, which is toxic). So how can we
encourage what Christ prayed for at the Last Supper, unity among his
disciples?
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer (Acts 2:42) I know that many people find silence “empty” and uncomfortable. Let me say a word about that. In silence we meet our deeper selves — our consciences, our fears, our hopes, the Word of God within us — and most human beings flee from that encounter. But there’s an unnecessary degree of discomfort because we don’t know anything that can make silence useful for our spiritual growth. So here are a few things to do with five minutes before Mass:
Read — or reread — the Scriptures for the Mass that’s about to begin. Listen for the voice of God
in what you read; mull over any word or phrase that strikes you. Think back over the week: Ask God to uncover for you where you succeeded in being His voice,
His hands, toward others over the past week. Ask God to uncover for you some place where you’re blind to His will, so that you can pray and
work on changing that. Pay attention to your breathing, as a way of gently putting aside the tensions and worries of the
past and future, so that you can be fully attentive to what is about to take place. Pray that someone unknown to you in the congregation will be
helped through a great struggle or moment of crisis by your prayer.
