Buffalo River Float Trip Review May 10-11-12, 2013 The Buffalo River Float Trip was simply Awesome !!! We gathered Friday afternoon at one of our cabins on this huge deck that has an absolutely killer view overlooking the mountains and the pristine forests for miles and miles! We had our "it's 5'oclock somewhere" on the sunny deck to be-gin our weekend long celebration. For Friday evening I had made reservations at this great little restaurant in Low Gap where we met the rest of our River Rats. They were in for a surprise! We had live music all night long! The musician had played with the Kansas City Symphony, was 85, and played us such delightful mu-sic. The other surprise was our food. Our chef, Nick, had trained in culinary school in New York for 5 years and had catered Liberace's birthday bash in Lake Tahoe! He had relatives here and thus moved to Arkansas, so lucky for us, we feasted very well indeed. I heard someone say their dinner was good as the food they had on our LRSC trip to Italy in March. Back at the cabin, we were entertained by our own ski renowned band, The Lift Tickets!!!! (Band members: Rod Fris-bee, Mike Van Bokhoven, and Larry Storthz). They played and sang impromptu songs warming up for Saturday night's Concert. Saturday morning we chowed down a "very light breakfast" cooked by our very own Jeanette Krohn and helpers Karen Van Bokhoven, myself, and Larry. We fortified ourselves with scrambled eggs, sausage, grits, biscuits, blackberry jam, honey, grapes, strawberries, sweet rolls, juice, and coffee before facing the mighty Buffalo River. While lingering over our coffee, Billy Furgerson and Mike Paulis presented their very informative Tips on Canoeing lesson which made us feel more confident before splash down. I felt so blessed that we had such warm and sunny weather to paddle the Buffalo!!! I could barely believe I would not need my wet suit after all. (That's after such a dire weather prediction of cold and rainy weather prediction earlier in the week. .....and earlier even, snow in May!!) We also had great flowing water to get us from Steel Creek to Kyle's Landing ...no dragging. Our lunch was on the rivers bank as was tradition. Saturday evening we enjoyed a yummy catered BBQ dinner of brisket, pulled pork, buns, beans, potatoes salad, slaw, blackberry cobbler, peach cobbler, and tea. With Rod Frisbee 's bonfire blazing the famous Lift Tickets Band blew us away with a Private Live Concert!!! The groupies were dancing, swaying to the music, screaming, jumping, applauding, clapping, and I saw underwear being thrown on stage!!! It definitely topped off the beautiful moonlit night. The trip was a success due to a great team! Thanks to Jeanette Krohn, Larry Storthz, Rod Frisbee, Mike and Karen VanBokhoven, Roger and Cheryl Nesuda, Billy Ferguson, Mike Paulus, Gem Koski, and Diane Phillips. And we had Fun, I mean we had "Phun"!!! But most of all we had FUN because we had such warm and caring "PHUN " people on this trip! By Trip Captain, Linda Frisbee

ARKANSAS RICE DEPOT

Our Story Way back in 1982, a few caring Arkansans noticed there were a lot of children, families and senior citizens going to bed hungry right here in Arkansas. Many food pantries were struggling for supplies. The cupboard was bare at the shelters. Children were hungry. So these folks organized and looked for food. And they found rice. Home-grown, nourishing and inexpensive rice. They paid for it out of their own pockets and gave it to anyone in need. Soon word spread about this organization that provided free rice to any group willing to fight hunger in their community. And the Arkansas Rice Depot was born. Within a couple of years, nearly one hundred rice growers from Riceland and Producers mills were donating rice. This was just the kind of foundation the charity needed. By 1986, then-Governor Bill Clinton helped the Arkansas Rice Depot distribute its one millionth pound of rice. For a while, rice re-mained the only food distributed, and though nourishing, it wasn't a complete meal. A Billy Graham Crusade changed all that. Six tons of food items were collected that year, and soon dry goods, canned foods, frozen meats and other items were donated, ware-housed and distributed across the state. In 1994, an Arkansas public school nurse noticed some children arriving at school listless and hungry. They said their school lunch the day before was the last meal they had. She won-dered if the Arkansas Rice Depot could help. Immediately, the Food For Kids program was launched, sending hungry children home with backpacks filled with food every night. Today the Arkansas Rice Depot serves around 600 Arkansas public schools and the Food For Kids backpack program has been duplicated across the US, helping feed hundreds of thou-sands of hungry kids. Every year the Arkansas Rice Depot feeds around half a million hungry Arkansans, distributing food to shelters, schools, disaster relief efforts and homebound seniors. All with minimal over-head. And in the summer of 2009, Arkansas Rice Depot received national recognition of our pro-grams, when All Roker brought NBC's Today Show to the Depot, with his Lend A Hand pro-gram. Through Lend A Hand, Arkansas Rice Depot received a five truckloads of items with a value totaling over $600,000. Local dignitaries came out to join in on the fun. We were one of only five charitable organizations chosen through Lend A Hand. You see, we don't believe in big salaries or glitzy marketing campaigns – 98% of all donations go to feeding the hungry. So you can be confident your donation fills an empty stomach. It's how this charity started, and it's how we'll continue our mission.
