As part of the Adopt-A-Highway program, St. Andrews 4-H Club did an annual spring clean up Sunday May 15th

. They col-

lected 62 bags of garbage and three bags of recyclables. They sent in many pictures of their cleanup groups. They had

many interesng finds and were a winner in our Spring Li<er Sweep Contest! Team names included Team Clean, Team

St. Andrews, Team Purple Giraffe and Team Bubble Gum!

E7 / E 9 D; L C E7 / E 9 D; L C Enfield / Elmsdale & District Lions Club had their Spring Cleanup which

was a very successful day for the community. Twenty-six Scouts, Guides

and Brownies cleaned seven kilometres of roadside on the Horne Se<le-

ment, Renfrew and Old Enfield Roads loop. The younger people were

used on the property sweep near the Lions Hall, and the older ones were

on the ditch detail. They had great support from the community with

Elmsdale Recycling providing a truck to take the li<er to the Landfill.

Thank you to Enfield Scout leaders and six Lions for safety and guidance.

Garbage bags and gloves donated by Rona, Elmsdale and Home Hard-

On June 3rd, eight "Friends of Crescent Beach" were

joined by 14 students from Nick Jeffery's Class at Pete

Rivière School to clean Crescent Beach Road and the

Beach. Within two hours they had picked up nine bags of

garbage and three bags of recyclables. Among the "finds"

were a golf club, a windshield snow scraper, a n shovel, a

surf board, a couple of fish "parts", lots of cans and

bo<les of various variees as well as the usual paper

items. The students all received thermal lunch bags com-

pliments of AAH Program and cookies and juice were en-

joyed by all. The students in Pete Rivière are becoming

more aware all the me about the fragility of the beach as

well as the need to not li<er. They also enjoy the chance

to see how their dunes are improving each year.

The Yarmouth Area Community Fund has adopted part of

Highway 304 and the volunteers are dedicated to making

the road clean for the benefit of both locals and tourists.

Working over two days, the volunteers recently picked up

more than 1,100 pounds of li<er, thoughtlessly tossed

along this picturesque harbour roadway!

Salt Springs 4-H Club had one of their best turnouts for the

roadside cleanup of their new route along Highway #4 in

Pictou County.

The Navy League Cadet Corp William Hall V.C. adopted the

highway that shares their name, near Hantsport. They had a

great number of volunteers take part, and collected 63

bags of li<er on their first cleanup.

On September 21, volunteers and supporters of the AAH program gathered in Truro to pay tribute to their peers

who have gone “above and beyond” with their road side cleanups. This event was in celebraon of the 20th Anniversary

Fire Department who drive safety vehicles during their clean up and provide them with a

coordinaon venue. Present for the ceremony were Cyril McDonald, program contact

person and Shelley Smith, Coordinator of the cleanup. Ellen Simpson, Co-Chair of the

T<@ YOU!! T<@ YOU!! While compiling the results for our Volunteer Recognion Awards, we realized just how many of

our groups were dong a fantasc job with their highway cleanups. Quite a few of our groups have been with the pro-

gram for several years, and have picked up an immense amount of li<er over their me in our program. We certainly ap-

preciate and value all of your efforts and hard work to improve the appearance of our roadways across the province!!!

L@ 7 V I7 S H L@ 7 V I7 S H We really enjoy holding

our Volunteer Informaon Session in different areas of the province. Next Spring, it will be me to have our conference in

the Western, Eastern or Northern part of the province. If you would like to host our V.I.S., send a proposal including a

possible venue, caterer, and an oponal tour site/idea. We will decide on the locaon

for our 2016 V.I.S. in late January.

new map on our website at www.adoptahighwayns.ca Our groups and their route have

been placed on a provincial map, so visitors to the site can see where they are located

around the province.

P I P I All volunteers are eligible to receive various

Adopt-A-Highway promoonal items for carrying out their roadside cleanup! Groups

can request these items when they send in their completed Li<er Cleanup Permit. We

have refillable pocket hand sanizers, tape measures, bandage dispensers, thermal lunch bags, and magnec clips. We

have our t-shirts available again as well.

E;; N4 E;; N4 If you would like to help reduce the use of paper, and reduce postage costs,

please sign up to receive our newsle<er via email! Simply send an email stang your request, and your email address, to

Snap some photos of your group and send them to the AAH office when you submit your cleanup permit. They may be

included in the upcoming edions of LITTERLITTERatureature! You could also include “before and a'er” shots of your highway or

in a future edion of our newsle<er.

F C> C<;@ F C> C<;@ Here is a check list of items to help you prepare for your Fall cleanup. 1) Dis-

cuss with your group the best day to perform the cleanup. 2) Request an Adopt-A-Highway Program Cleanup permit at

least one week before your cleanup from the local TIR depot (or HRM office). They will arrange to have the supplies

ready for your group. 3) On the day of the cleanup, review the safety guidelines with all members of your volunteer

group. 4) Fill out the informaon on the Li<er Cleanup Permit a'er your cleanup. Keep a copy of the permit for your

records, give the Department of TIR depot a copy and send a copy to the Adopt-A-Highway office. 5) Return the safety

vests and unused garbage bags, etc. in the next day or two. This is important as there may be another group that needs

the supplies for their scheduled cleanup.

Coldbrook Lions Club and Leos had a good day with their li<er pick-up. Spe-

cial thanks to Subway for connuing to provide them with a great lunch.

They picked up a bit more than last year and found that overall Tim Hortons

were not the big offender that they have been in past years. Thier largest

contributor to li<er were pieces of plasc that may have been blown off the

backs of passing trucks.

Linden 4-H club did their roadside clean up June 26.

They had about a dozen people parcipate includ-

ing parents, leaders and members. Oddest thing

found was an ET doll. They collected about 10 bags

of garbage.

Pictured here are the Scouts and Venturers who did

the cleanup this Spring for the South Berwick WI. They

collected 12 bags of li<er along Highway #1 from

Waterville to Berwick West.

The Annapolis Valley Geocachers had another successful

cleanup of Exit # 17E of Hwy #101 in Kingston. They had

24 volunteers and collected more than 11 bags of li<er

in less than a hour. They found lots of unusual items dur-

ing their cleanup this Spring.

Hill ‘n Dale 4-H Club connued their perfect rec-

ord with a cleanup of their route on Highway #325

in Wileville. They collected 26 bags of li<er and

two bags of recyclables with 11 helpers taking part

in the project.

Ro-Win-Lea 4-H Club recently picked a new route for their

club. They had their cleanup on a wet and rainy day, and col-

lected eight bags of li<er and one bag of recyclables. They

gave out cupcakes and water a'erwards. It was a great, but

rainy, day and they were so happy to parcipate in this amaz-

ing project.

bags of li<er during their cleanup of Highway #7 and around

Exit #18 on Highway #107. Thanks to all who showed up:

Lake Echo Lions, Lake Echo Seniors, Minor Ball Members, the

Boaters Associaon and many community members.

HMCS H7NHMCS H7N Members of HMCS Halifax parcipated in the annual Adopt-A-Highway cleanup on Bell Boule-

vard. The weather was great, clearing up just as they were geQng ready to start, making a

great day to complete this worthy task. The Halifax crew collected 17 bags of garbage, three

bags of recyclables, a roadside stand, two signs (one for GUITAR FEST and one for Old Guys-

borough Road), one diaper, one laptop, one mother board, one USB cable, mulple Tic Tac

containers (only in the vicinity of Sky Boulevard), numerous coffee cups, and hundreds and

hundreds of cigare<e bu<s. They would like to thank all that parcipated, the Halifax Interna-

onal Airport Authority for coming out, Gina Bain, the Adopt -A-Highway program coordina-

tor, for her assistance, Sandra Lively and John Mercer at the TIR Depot for the safety equip-

ment and to all the people who beeped their horns and stopped by to thank them for the

highway clean-up.
