Here is an example of expository writing. Read the passages and answer the questions that follow. SOMETIMES IT IS HELPFUL TO READ THE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN READING AS THEY WILL HELP YOU TO READ WITH A PURPOSE.

What is a Lotic Ecosystem?

Water is a vital part of our lives. We drink it. We wash with it. We use water for irrigating crops, for transporting goods, as well as, for generating energy at hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants. We treasure our water for recreation like swimming, boating and fishing.

Ecologists divide continental waters into two categories Lentic and Lotic. A Lotic Ecosystem has flowing waters. Here are a few examples of a Lotic system.

A spring is a point where water flows out of the ground. A spring may flow the whole year or only sometimes. This depends on the water getting into the ground all of the time (rain) or only once in a while (snow melting). A spring often sends water down, along the land. This is how rivers start. Some springs produce water that is good for health reasons. Sometimes towns grow by these springs because many people who are ill come there to get better. Such towns are called spa towns.

A stream is a body of water with a current, confined within a bed and stream-banks. Depending on its locale or certain characteristics, a stream may be referred to as brook, beck, burn, creek, crick, kill, lick, rill, river syke, bayou, rivulet, or run. Streams are important as conduits in the water cycle, instruments in groundwater recharge, and they serve as corridors for fish and wildlife migration.

A Brook is another type of stream that is smaller than a creek, especially one that is fed by a spring or seep. It is usually small and easily forded. This means where one can cross by walking or riding on an animal or in a vehicle. A Brook is different from a stream in that a brook is characterized by its shallowness and its bed being composed solely of rocks.

A river may start from natural springs, or it may originate from a water source like a lake or a melting glacier. Falling rain also supplies the river with much of its water. Rivers flow until they reach a larger water source, such as the ocean. The place where a river meets the ocean is called the mouth of the river. Sometimes rivers join with other rivers along their path. The smaller rivers that feed into the main body of water are called tributaries. Rivers are very important to our world! Not only do they help drain the land of extra water, their energy can be used to generate power, and people can travel them in boats, even transporting goods from place to place.

As you can see Lotic systems can be diverse in their form, ranging from a spring that is only a few centimeters wide to a major river that is kilometers in width. But remember that despite these differences it is the fact that all Lotic systems always have running water.

Homework- WednesdayHere is another example of expository writing. Read the passages and answer the questions that follow. SOMETIMES IT IS HELPFUL TO READ THE QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN READING AS THEY WILL HELP YOU TO READ WITH A PURPOSE.

What is a Lentic Ecosystem?

Pennsylvania is the habitat of thousands of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish, flowers, trees and invertebrates all of whom depend on the water as much as people do.

As we learned earlier, ecologists divide continental waters into two categories Lentic and Lotic. A Lentic Ecosystem has still waters. Here are a few examples of a Lentic system.

What makes a lake? A lake is a body of standing water (not moving that is). This can include natural lakes or human made lakes, such as reservoirs and farm ponds. Lakes are a critical part of the environment, serving as the collection point for all of the water that falls in the area that travels down through what's called the watershed. The watershed is made up of all the streams and rivers that flow into a particular lake

What makes a pond different from a lake? Both are open bodies of fresh water in a depression in the ground. A pond is usually smaller and shallower than a lake. Because they are shallower than lakes, ponds have plants growing on the bottom of them from one side to the other. Most ponds are less than six or seven feet deep. Plants need sunlight to grow and lakes are usually too deep in the middle for plants to grow on the bottom. The temperature of the water in a pond is usually about the same from the top to the bottom and it changes with the air temperature. In really cold places, ponds can freeze solid from top to bottom! There are two types of ponds, permanent and temporary. Permanent ponds exist year-round. Temporary or vernal ponds usually develop in the spring when rain and melting snow fill in depressions in the ground. Vernal ponds dry up in the summer.

A marsh is another body of standing water. It is a wetland submerged by water. The water may be a few inches deep to two or three feet. The height of standing water in a marsh can range, depending on the location and the season, but the mud or clay that forms the base of the marsh is always heavily saturated. It provides traditional habitat for many birds like ducks, herons and shorebirds. Most marshes are low-lying areas around lakes, rivers and streams. They have grassy vegetation that can live and grow in the wet conditions. Higher ground also has trees and bushes that add to the diversity of food and shelter for wildlife.

Two other natural wetland categories that have standing water are seeps and vernal pools. Although Seeps and Vernal Pools have many differences, they also share some important features. All known examples of Seeps and Vernal Pools are small, usually less than one half acre. These two wetland community types typically occur in depressions and at the bases of slopes in areas of upland forest. Although Seeps and Vernal Pools only contain occasional trees, both are exist in shaded areas.

So there you have it! You have now learned about two important ecosystems in Pennsylvania. Just remember that A Lentic Ecosystem has still waters while a A Lotic Ecosystem has flowing waters. The Story of Water: Level R – Questioning

General “Mad” Anthony Wayne

A biography has the following characteristics: 1) Tells about a real person 2) Shows the writer knows a lot about this person 3) Describes the person's environment 4) Provides anecdotes or details that show the person in action 5) Shows how the person affects other people 6) States or implies how the writer feels about the person

Read the biography about General Wayne. Answer the questions that follow.

Anthony Wayne was a prominent American general and hero during the Revolutionary War. He was a contemporary of Washington and Franklin and knew them both well. He would distinguish himself time and time again.

Anthony Wayne was a United States Army general and statesman. Wayne adopted a military career at the outset of the American Revolutionary War, where his military exploits and fiery personality quickly earned him a promotion to the rank of Brigadier General and the nickname of Mad Anthony Wayne.

He was born in Easttown Township, Pennsylvania in Chester County, and was educated at his uncle's private

academy in Philadelphia. He was sent by Benjamin Franklin and some associates to work for year surveying land they owned in Nova Scotia, after which he returned to work in his father's tannery, while continuing his surveying. He became a leader in Chester County and served in the Pennsylvania legislature in 1774-1775.

At the onset of the American Revolutionary War in 1775, Wayne raised a militia and in 1776 became colonel of the Fourth Regiment of Pennsylvania troops. He and his regiment were part of the Continental

Army's unsuccessful invasion of Canada, during which he commanded the distressed forces at Fort Ticonderoga. His service resulted in the promotion to brigadier-general in February 21, 1777.

Later, he commanded the Pennsylvania line at Brandywine, Paoli, and Germantown. After winter quarters at Valley Forge, he led the American attack at the Battle of Monmouth.

He distinguished himself in several battles, but his greatest exploit was the capture of Stony Point, a British stronghold on the Hudson River. On July 16, 1779, in a nighttime, bayonets-only assault lasting thirty minutes, light infantry commanded by Wayne overcame British fortifications at Stony Point, New York. In command of a picked corps of 1,300 men, Wayne attacked at midnight. In a brilliant tactical maneuver, he took the garrison by surprise, killing or wounding 123 and capturing 575 men. A grateful

Congress voted him a gold medal. The whole country acclaimed him, and Washington praised his "judgment and bravery."

The success of this operation provided a boost to the morale of an army which had at that time suffered a series of military defeats. Congress awarded him a medal for the victory.

Other victories at West Point and Green Spring, Virginia, increased his popular reputation as a bold commander. For the remainder of the war, Wayne served with the Marquis de Lafayette in Virginia until the British surrendered at Yorktown. After the British surrendered at Yorktown, he went further south and severed the British alliance with Native American tribes in Georgia. He then negotiated peace treaties with both the Creek and the Cherokee, for which Georgia rewarded him with the gift of a large rice plantation. When peace came in 1783, he retired as brevet major general.

After the war, Wayne returned to Pennsylvania and served in the state legislature for a year in 1784. He then moved to Georgia and settled upon the tract of land granted him by that State for his military service. He was a delegate to the State convention which ratified the Constitution in 1788

In 1792 President Washington recalled him to serve as commander in chief of the Army. His assignment was to destroy the Indian power north of the Ohio River. For a year Wayne gathered and trained an army; in the spring of 1793 they set out for the west. At Fallen Timbers (near present-day Toledo) he defeated the Indians in August 1794. He negotiated the Treaty of Greenville with the chiefs (1795), by which the several tribes acknowledged American supremacy in the region. This ended a generation of warfare on the frontier.

In June 1796, Wayne was back in the frontier overseeing the surrender of British forts to the United States. In November he became ill with gout. On Dec. 16, 1796, he died.

At his request he was buried in a plain oak coffin near Erie, Pa.

Wayne has to be one of the few famous people in American history known to have two graves.

Thirteen years after Wayne's death, his son, Isaac Wayne, decided to move his father's body to the family's burial plot at St. David's Church in Radnor, Pa.

Often impetuous and occasionally rash, he was called "mad," but none disputed his courage and competence.

The Water CycleRead the information about the water cycle. Answer the questions that follow.

Precipitation, evaporation, and transpiration are all terms that sound familiar, yet may not mean much to you. They are all part of the water cycle, a complex process that not only gives us water to drink, fish to eat, but also weather patterns that help grow our crops.

Water is an

integral part of life on this planet. It is an odorless, tasteless, substance that covers more than three-fourths of the Earth's surface. Most of the water on

Earth, 97% to be exact, is salt water found in the oceans. We can not drink salt water or use it for crops because of the salt content. We can remove salt from ocean water, but the process is very expensive.

Only about 3% of Earth's water is fresh. Two percent of the Earth's water (about 66% of all fresh water) is in solid form, found in ice caps and glaciers. Because it is frozen and so far away, the fresh water in ice caps is not available for use by people or plants. That leaves about 1% of all the Earth's water in a form useable to humans and land animals. This fresh water is found in lakes, rivers, streams,

13

Page 14: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewA base word ending in t will usually take a -tion ending. A base word ending in s will usually take an -sion ending.-(s)ion,

ponds, and in the ground. (A small amount of water is found as vapor in the atmosphere.)

Scientific Concepts

There are six important processes that make up the water cycle. These are:

Evaporation

Evaporation is the process where a liquid, in this case water, changes from its liquid state to a gaseous state. Liquid water becomes water vapor. Although lower air pressure helps promote evaporation, temperature is the primary factor. For example, all of the water in a pot left on a table will eventually evaporate. It may take several weeks. But, if that same pot of water is put on a stove and brought to a boiling temperature, the water will evaporate more quickly.

During the water cycle some of the water in the oceans and freshwater bodies, such as lakes and rivers, is warmed by the sun and evaporates. During the process of evaporation, impurities in the water are left behind. As a result, the water that goes into the atmosphere is cleaner than it was on Earth.

Condensation  Condensation is the opposite of evaporation. Condensation occurs when a gas is changed into a liquid. Condensation occurs when the temperature of the vapor decreases.

When the water droplets formed from condensation are very small, they remain suspended in the atmosphere. These millions of droplets of suspended water form clouds in the sky or fog at ground level. Water condenses into droplets only when there are small dust particles present around which the droplet can form.

Precipitation  When the temperature and atmospheric pressure are right, the small droplets of water in clouds form larger droplets and precipitation occurs. The raindrops fall to Earth.

As a result of evaporation, condensation and precipitation, water travels from the surface of the Earth goes into the atmosphere, and returns to Earth again.

Surface Runoff  Much of the water that returns to Earth as precipitation runs off the surface of the land, and flows down hill into streams, rivers, ponds and lakes. Small streams flow into larger streams, then into rivers, and eventually the water flows into the ocean.

Surface runoff is an important part of the water cycle because,

14

Page 15: Literacy By Design: The Bake Sale Battle Level Q€¦  · Web viewA base word ending in t will usually take a -tion ending. A base word ending in s will usually take an -sion ending.-(s)ion,

through surface runoff, much of the water returns again to the oceans, where a great deal of evaporation occurs.

Infiltration  Infiltration is an important process where rain water soaks into the ground, through the soil and underlying rock layers. Some of this water ultimately returns to the surface at springs or in low spots downhill. Some of the water remains underground and is called groundwater.

As the water infiltrates through the soil and rock layers, many of the impurities in the water are filtered out. This filtering process helps clean the water.

Transpiration One final process is important in the water cycle. As plants absorb water from the soil, the water moves from the roots through the stems to the leaves. Once the water reaches the leaves, some of it evaporates from the leaves, adding to the amount of water vapor in the air. This process of evaporation through plant leaves is called transpiration. In large forests, an enormous amount of water will transpire through leaves.

The Cycle

Water is constantly being cycled between the atmosphere, the ocean and land. This cycling is a very important process that helps sustain life on Earth.

As the water evaporates, vapors rise and condense into clouds. The clouds move over the land, and precipitation falls in the form of rain, ice or snow. The water fills streams and rivers, and eventually flows back into the oceans where evaporation starts the process anew.

Water's state (solid, liquid or gas) is determined mostly by temperature. Although water continuously changes states from solid to liquid to gas, the amount of water on Earth remains constant. There is as much water now as there was hundreds of millions of years ago.
