Baptism
All parents seeking baptism for their
child are expected to attend a
preparation session. Parents are
recommended to attend a session
prior to the birth of their child.
Next Session of Baptism:
Preparation for the second
born child is Monday, Nov. 12
at 7pm. Godparents are also
expected to
attend. This
session will be
held in the
St. Louis Room.
Thank You and Congratulations, Deacons!
This weekend the Archdiocese celebrates the 40th anniversary of the
ordination of its first class of Permanent Deacons. (I remember being
present for the ceremony, relegated to a corner of the choir loft of
St. Raphael's Cathedral!) The Second Vatican Council called for the re-establishment of
the diaconate as a permanent order in the church. Previously the diaconate was reserved
to candidates being formed for priesthood and was received shortly before priesthood
ordination, in some cases a few months or even just a few days!
The archdiocese and our parish have been richly blessed by the presence and ministry of
our permanent deacons. Please join me in offering them not only our congratulations but
also a promise of our continued prayers and support of their ministry.
Parish Weekend Mass Coverage, November 3/4 and 10/11:
Please welcome Msgr. Lyle Wilgenbusch who will be here the next two weekends to cover
the parish while I lead the pilgrimage to the Holy Land (the one in Israel, not northeast
Iowa!). Monsignor Wilgenbusch was a member of the faculty of Wahlert High School in
Dubuque when I was assigned there also. He has served also as a parish pastor and his
last assignment before retirement was as the Episcopal Vicar for the Waterloo Region of
the Archdiocese when we had that administrative structure.
As usual, in the event of a funeral, Fr. Kyle from St. Thomas will be contacted.
Messages from Father Jim
Archdiocese of Dubuque Financial Report Available
The Archdiocesan Pastoral Center has published a financial report for the
2016-2017 fiscal year. The report answers questions about income from
parish taxes and shows how gifts to the Archdiocese allow us to partner with
others to continue the mission of Jesus in the ministries of the Church. Read
the report online at www.dbqarch.org/2017financialreport.
We also printed extra copies. These complimentary copies can be reserved on
a first come, first serve basis by contacting the Development Office secretary,
Julie Kapsch, at (319) 366-2517 or [email protected].
The Sacrament of Marriage
The Sacrament of Marriage can be celebrated at a time convenient to the
couple and in accordance with the parish schedule. The date and time of the
celebration must be scheduled only with a priest or deacon of the parish. The
couple must contact a priest or deacon of the parish preferably one year prior to
the desired wedding date, but no less than six months prior to their desired date.
The St. Cecilia Wedding Guidelines 2018, is available from the Parish Office and
on our website. This contains additional information and guidelines.

St. Cecilia Activities
Last Sunday, Leah Demarest was received into full
communion. Leah shares:
I grew up in Newton, IA. I have
lived in Ames for 15 years and
am employed as a mental
health and chemical
dependency therapist. I met
my husband while attending
Iowa State University. We have
been married for 7 years. We
adopted our 2 year old son, Gabe, in April 2018 and he was
baptized at St Cecilia in August. My husband grew up
Catholic and I was raised Protestant. We have been
attending St Cecilia as a family for the past year and I have
decided to commit to Catholicism through what I have
learned at Mass and the RCIA program. I am looking
forward to my son being raised Catholic and, hopefully,
attending school at St Cecilia when he is school-age.
RCIA
Stewardship: Today’s Psalm says, “The Lord has done
great things for us; we are filled with joy.” Good stewards
demonstrate by their living and giving that they understand
God as the Source of all they are and have.
Marriage Corner: “Take courage; get up, he is calling
you.” (Mk 10:49) Are there changes that need to be made in
your life that you and your spouse are nervous about? Job
change, move, opportunities, challenges? God is calling you
and he will go with you. Be not afraid.
Stewardship Moment: After healing the blind man in
today’s Gospel Jesus told him to go, to be on his way. But the
man chose to follow Jesus. Being a disciple of Jesus is a choice.
The stewardship way of life likewise involves a choice, in fact
many choices. We choose to be grateful, we choose to live
generously, and we choose to trust that God will always
provide for our needs. These are three choices central to the
stewardship way of life. What choices will we make this week
that give witness to our decision to follow Jesus Christ?
