The season of Advent is here. It is a time when we prepare for a new coming of Jesus our Savior. Advent is a period of simple living and extra prayer. Jesus is the reason for our being and it is because of this that we prepare ourselves during Advent for the coming of our Lord. During this month we celebrate the virtue of Charity and you have been so generous this year with your contributions during our Food Drive and through the snowsuit campaign.. We are thankful to be in such a giving school where charity is extended in the form of food drives but equally important, it is forged through the respectful behavior that is promoted on a
daily basis. We are thankful to our Catholic School Parent Council for
organizing our December 15 th gingerbread making and Santa pic event. This event promises to be a great way for our students and families to connect with the parish and to really get into the Christmas spirit where the focus is the celebration of the Birth of our Lord. Our annual Advent mass will be taking place on Thursday, December 22 at 10:00AM at Cecilia’s Church. Join us as we celebrate Christmas from a child’s viewpoint. We would like to thank you for supporting our Annual Book Fair which took place during our Parent/Teacher conferences. Your generosity will assist us in replenishing our book supply for the students. We encourage you to always spend time reading to your children or simply to ask them about what they have learned at school. Your continued involvement and interest in their school work will certainly promote the importance of always, ‘striving for excellence in all that your children, our students, do daily.
From all of us at St.Cecilia, we wish you a Blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year…

A sincere thank you to our Playground committee and parent volunteers who took
the time out of their busy weekend in November to do playground cleanup
/maintenance. Some benches and a new piece of playground equipment have also been installedthank you to those who saw
this project through!
A quick note on the vision and hearing screening clinics offered at school that cost $15.00 per child. These services (and more thorough diagnostic testing) are available for *free* for children in Ontario. Please do
not feel you have to participate in this program. If you would like to make use of this service and can not afford the $15, the company has a stated policy to waive their fee. Contact us or the office for help with
this.
Please take 10mins to complete the Board's long term planning survey and have your say on important issues like proposed sites for new French Immersion schools and options for specialist high school curriculum. The
survey closes in January to inform discussion at the February Board meeting. Link here:

Supporting the Development of Learning Skills and Work Habits at Home
During this time we can take time to support our children in setting goals for themselves. This might be a good time to review the six Learning Skills and Work Habits and think about ways that we can grow in these areas. Learning skills and work habits are study skills and thinking skills that are an integral part of your child’s learning. Developing these learning skills will help prepare your child for lifelong learning as well as foster independence in learning, problem solving, decisionmaking and organizing. We can find the six Learning Skills and Work Habits on the first page of the report card. They include: Responsibility, Collaboration,
Initiative, Organization, Independent Work and SelfRegulation.
Parent Supports at Home
Help your child set goals
Take a few moments everyday to chat about the school day and be a good listener: “How
was your day?”
Make sure to always check and sign the agenda and monitor your child’s progress
and homework completion
Communicate regularly with your child’s teacher
Encourage your child to be punctual
Establish a balance between homework and
other activities
Provide your child with a suitable environment for working at home (neat and
free from distraction)
Work out a specific time for studying and homework completion
Wishing you a Very Merry “Mindful” Christmas
Christmas is often a very busy time of year with much planning and activities. While it’s enjoyable, we may find ourselves
rushing from one event to another without taking the time to enjoy each moment. We encourage you to consider the following tips
so that you will enjoy a “mindful” Christmas
Play Christmas songs each day
Eating mindfully – when eating your favorite holiday treat enjoy each bite by paying attention to the flavor and texture
When waiting in a shopping line be mindful of all that you are grateful for. This may help you feel calm and help to put things into perspective
Go for a walk in nature and pay special attention to the sights, sounds, and smells
When decorating your Christmas tree take the time to enjoy the beauty of the moment and most of all, take a deep breath and enjoy the magic of Christmas!
Back by popular demand! Ski Day!
It’s that wonderful time of year again! Winter
is here! Our ski day last year at Mount St. Louis/
Moonstone was a big success and therefore, there will be a ski day again this
year for grades 5 to 8 on February 23, 2017 . Permission forms will
be sent home after the Christmas break. Listen during the morning announcements for more information in the new year.

Reminders for Parents Weather Now that December has arrived it is just a matter of time until the cold weather hits. Please ensure that your child is dressed for outdoor activity. Fresh air is vital to learning and we will continue to have outdoor lunch and recesses. If temperatures drop below 15 to 20 range we will assess as needed. Attendance & Lates Unfortunately we still have many students who continue to arrive late. Our opening exercises begin with O’Canada followed by the prayer. All students are expected to stop for the anthem and the prayer. It is very distressing to see parents moving about during opening exercises and not stopping for these observances. We are trying to set a good example for our students. If parents are in the building during opening exercises please stop and be respectful. Thank you. Pokemon Cards Please refrain from sending these cards to school. The teachers are noticing some disruption around the trading and swapping of cards. This is an activity best saved for playdates.
Parent Surveys for Before and After School Programs
As of January 18, 2017, parents, of currentlyenrolled Year 1/Junior Kindergarten students, will be provided with a survey to indicate interest for a Before and After School Licensed Child Care Program to potentially open. A minimum of 20 positive surveys and then 20 registrations will be needed in order to consider a program.
During that same week , parents of currentlyenrolled children from the ages of 6 12 will be able to access a Before and After School survey online through the following link:
https://soar.tcdsb.org/soarsurvey2/schoolagesurvey.aspx
A minimum of 25 positive surveys and then 25 registrations will be needed in order to consider a schoolage program for 6 – 12 year olds.
Before and After/After School Programs generally operate on a costrecovery basis therefore minimum numbers are required in order to be financiallyviable.
Completed surveys (whether online or paper copies) are due by Friday, February 17, 2017.
For school sites that have an existing Before and After School and or just After School Program (authorized recreation), parents are still welcome to complete the surveys to show interest in a program that may not currently be available in the school.
Note that every effort will be made to open programs where there is sufficient interest. This is contingent upon identifying a qualified third party agency that accepts the opportunity to open a program within a school site.
