I have, therefore, come to the conviction that these detached pieces, these different and scattere

elodies, were dispersed, broken fragments of a grand totality, and should be considered a so

f national epic. By the expression "Rhapsody" it was my intention to designate the fantastical

pic element which I believed to recognize in them.

The present Second Rhapsody is one of the best known and most popular works of this clas
