WITHOUT WORDS IS LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS The annual Without Words event will be taking place NEXT WEEK. They are looking for high energy students interested in helping spread the word about this week long event. Promotion will take place during the weeks leading up to the event as well as the week of Without Words. If you are interested in helping promote the 2012 Without Words Exhibit please contact Without Words PR Chair, Catherine Lampi at [email protected]. SAFETY FAIR WITH THE DORI SLOSBERG FOUNDATION The Dori Slosberg Foundation is excited to announce the 2012 Geico Road Safety Bicycle Tour – “Survive the Drive” on February 23rd, 2012. A press conference will be held on the steps of The Old Capitol at 12 P.M., when the cyclists arrive. Immediately following the press conference, a safety fair will
be held at Florida State University’s student union from 1 – 4 P.M. to educate students, faculty, staff and the overall community on driving and highway safety. The safety fair will include safe driving programs and information, booths, giveaways, and more. The Foundation would like to encourage students to get involved with the event by volunteering to help spread awareness of the event, help set-up/tear-down, distribute safety information, provide musical/dance/literary performances, speak about driving safety or anything else innovative to drive the message of safe driving home. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE GARNET & GOLD SCHOLAR SOCIETY Do you want to make the most out of your last year here at Florida State University within and beyond the classroom? Be recognized for your efforts by participating in the Garnet and Gold Scholar Society! The society facilitates involvement of the engaged, well-rounded student in the areas of Leadership, Internship, Service, International, and Research. A student who has met the criteria in three of the five areas and writes an approved Synthesis Reflection is eligible for consideration. Programming and mentoring efforts are being planned for the 2011-2012 school year. Any senior who has met or will meet the criteria listed at http://garnetandgoldscholar.fsu.edu/ by graduation is eligible to apply by completing an Intent to Participate form no later than 2 weeks into your final semester at FSU! ENGLISH SPEAKING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED If you would like to help newcomers develop their English skills, become a member of an organization, meet people from around the world, and learn new skills from an accredited non-profit educational organization, then this is the workshop for you. Become a volunteer tutor. You do not need to know any other language other than English to be a tutor. This workshop will be held in the Literacy Classroom on the 3 floor of the Collins Main Library at 200 W. Park Avenue on Saturday, February 25 from 1pm to 5pm. It’s About…
RECYCLE MANIA HAS BEGUN
Over the course of 10 weeks (every day through March 31st) FSU will be monitoring recycling and trash data from bins on campus and competing against other schools in the nation. To place high in the competition, FSU needs to have the highest gross tonnage of paper, cardboard, bottles and cans. To join and invite your friends to the event follow Recycle Mania on facebook. VOLUNTEER AT CAPITAL CITY YOUTH SERVICES WITH OUTREACH Capital City Youth Services offers counseling and outreach services to youth and their families, and emergency shelter services to youth in crisis. Volunteers are needed to serve as positive role models and mentors, encouraging productive, positive behavior, spending quality time with the children there, and showing genuine concern for their futures. This agency was recently added to the Community Outreach Program’s list of service projects for the spring. The project will take place Mondays, from 4pm-7pm. To participate, stop by the Center for Leadership and Civic Education to sign up. The sign up process is first come, first serve, and space is limited. The sign up is available as much as a week in advance, to secure your place on the project. APPLY TO STUDENTS ACTIVATING ADAPTIVE AND INTERNATIONAL LEADERSHIP ACPA and Semester at Sea have joined forces to provide this unique opportunity for student leaders. This program is designed to give students hands-on experience of working and learning collaboratively on a voyage through Central America and the Caribbean. With a focus on adaptive leadership, you will learn to help address major issues affecting our world that are in line with the United Nations Millennium Goals. Throughout the voyage, you will have the opportunity to meet and connect with others interested in positive social change, learn from an engaging faculty member experienced in college student leadership development, and participate in service-learning opportunities and site visits. Applications are due March 5, 2012 VOLUNTEER AT FAMU DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH SCHOOL FAMU Development Research School needs tutors to assist students in grades first through fifth in the areas of mathematics (algebra, trigonometry, and geometry), reading and writing. Scheduling is flexible to meet the needs of the tutors from 3pm-6pm. Background checks will be conducted with the FAMU police department and no prior training is required to serve with this program. VISIT TALLAHASSEE MUSEUM WITH COMMUNITY OUTREACH The Tallahassee Museum hosts a variety of exhibits to promote knowledge and understanding of the region’s cultural history and natural environment. While touring the 52-acre facility, visitors can see many examples of the indigenous wildlife of this area, in the Wildlife Florida exhibit, and the animals that
would have been on a typical farm in the 1880s in the Big Bend Farm area. The Outreach Program has just added the Tallahassee Museum to its list of service projects for students. On this project, volunteers have an opportunity to make enrichment items for the animals in these exhibits, as well as the animals used for kids’ programs. The items made will then be introduced into the animals’ habitats to help stimulate their natural, instinctive behaviors like digging, sniffing and scratching. This keeps the animals happy and healthy. If you enjoy being outdoors and would like to help keep the Museum’s animals content, you can sign for on Tuesday afternoons in the Center for Leadership and Civic Education. GET INVOLVED WITH LEADERSHAPE Apply to be a participant at the 2012 Florida State University LeaderShape Institute. Held April 30- May 5, LeaderShape is an intensive and energizing six-day program that exists to inspire, develop, and support students who have a commitment to lead with a high level of integrity. During the week, you will have an opportunity to meet and work with 60-70 FSU students from diverse backgrounds, as well as create a personal vision - an individual commitment to creating a positive change in the world. FSU LeaderShape is designed to provide you with an environment that encourages your personal leadership development. Applications are available online at the Center’s website. NEW OUTREACH PROJECT AT THE AMERICAN RED CROSS
The Center for Leadership and Civic Education is seeking students interested in serving and supporting the local Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. The Center has had a long-standing relationship with the local Red Cross and we have worked closely together on many initiatives in the past, but this will be the first time offering a Community Outreach Project to the American Red Cross. We hope this endeavor will help us to build a sustainable bridge and even stronger partnership between the Center and the American Red Cross. MALE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CAMP BOGGY CREEK Camp Boggy Creek is a year round camp that enriches the lives of children who have chronic or life threatening illnesses by creating camping experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medically sound. During the summer of 2012, they are searching for male volunteers for one of their eight week long summer camp sessions between June and mid-August. For more information, email [email protected]. VOLUNTEER WITH CANOPY OAKS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL The PTO for Canopy Oaks Elementary School is in need of 60 volunteers to help with its annual Spring Carnival Friday, March 30, 2012. We are asking for volunteers to commit four hours of time, from 4:45pm to 8:45pm to help set up, staff Carnival booths, and clean up. ASTORIA PARK NEEDS MENTORS Mentors are needed to work one-on-one with students who are struggling in core academic subjects at Astoria Park. A commitment of 60 minutes per week is required. Mentors are required to attend a mentor training session hosted by the Leon County Schools Volunteer and Mentor Office. INTERNSHIPS & JOB OPPORTUNITIES APPLY FOR THE ANNUAL GLOBAL CITIZEN AWARD The Center for Global Engagement is now accepting nominations for the Third Annual Global Citizen Award. Nominations may be submitted at their website by the March 4 deadline. Faculty, staff, and students are all welcome to submit nominations. The Global Citizen Award is awarded to up to two outstanding students who have been actively engaged in intercultural initiatives and/or who have exemplified leadership in promoting and supporting a global community among Florida State University students. Nominees must meet the following criteria: be currently enrolled at FSU, be in good academic standing and in good standing with the university (or graduated in December 2011), demonstrate leadership in fostering a global community and interaction among cultures at FSU and/or promote and actively engage in opportunities that encourage students to develop global awareness and understanding and have not previously received this award. For more information, please visit their website. THE PEARSON FOUNDATION AWARD The Pearson Foundation is proud to announce the application for the 2012 Pearson Prize for Higher Education. This award recognizing students who, while still completing their undergraduate studies, are distinguishing themselves by leading public service efforts that give back to their local community. SETH ROSSETTI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Established in 2006, this memorial scholarship was created in memory of Seth Rossetti. The purpose of this scholarship is to support one undergraduate student who is presently or who was for a significant part of his/her life the child of a single parent. This scholarship is available to all current FSU undergraduate students with a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average and all incoming FSU freshmen with a minimum 3.0 high school cumulative grade point average. Applicants for the award must submit a pictorial collage of at least 10 but no more than 20 photographs/images that will communicate the student's sense of his or her personal identity and how he or she perceives the concept of diversity. Collages cannot exceed a size of 15” x 20”. The collage will be accompanied by an essay of no more than two to four pages describing the collage and explaining their financial need. One winner will receive a $1000 scholarship ($500 in Fall 2012 & $500 in Spring 2013). Application materials can also be sent to. The poster should be mailed or delivered. Any questions concerning the scholarship can be referred to Robert Bryant or other CMA staff via e-mail or by phone at (850) 645-7504. The application deadline is March 30, 2012. LILA FOUNDATION NEEDS INTERNS The LiLa Foundation is an organization created to serve the health and education needs of Haitian individuals. Their mission is to progress rural Haitian communities living in poverty by providing primary education and health services to children and families. Their approach improves and promotes wellness of the community by providing medication, health examinations,
health awareness, and elementary education to poverty stricken communities. These efforts combat the immediate crisis caused by the lack of adequate health care and poor nutrition, as well as address the demands of the future by educating the youth in the community. They are currently seeking donations, interns, or volunteers to help with different projects that the LILA Foundation is working on. VOLUNTEER WITH ALABAMA RURAL MINISTRY Alabama Rural Ministry is currently looking for people to be on their summer staff. Positions include Construction Coordinator, Day Camp Coordinator, and Site Leader. Staff is compensated with a scholarship at the end of the summer. SOULFORCE INTERNSHIP AVAILABLE Soulforce is an organization committed to freedom for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people from religious and political oppression through relentless nonviolent resistance. As they enter their second decade of work, they invite you to join their movement. They are offering an internship involving their Equality Ride, which is a multi-week bus trip through the country that stops at campuses to talk about LGBT equality and social justice. The internship provides travel, housing, and food, along with a small stipend. The link for the position can be found here.
