What is listening?• Listening is one of the most important things

in interpersonal communication. “listening is the action process of making out of another person’s spoken message” (Floyd, 2009, p.259).

Why do we listen?• We listen to obtain information, comprehend,

enjoy, and to learn.

Common Barriers that Affect Listening

• Noise is everywhere.• e.g., sounds that come from people conversing, TV, Cell phones, and other

devices.

Common barriers that affect listening

• Pseudolistening• (e.g., we usually pretend like we are paying attention and listening to someone when they

are talking, but we are not listening effectively and this is what puts our listening a barrier).

• Information overload• (e.g., everyday we do a lot of activities including talking to people, watching TV, listening

to radio, reading books/magazines, and etc.) when we have all loads of information, we become so overwhelmed stressed and we do not want to pay attention/listen any other things because we are overloaded).

• Glazing over- is another barrier that effect listening. (e.g., when we listen to a lecture, we do not listen to it so well) The obstacle is that we day dream, we think of what we will do later the day or night. For that where the information would go through is blocked by other information.

• Closed-mindedness is another barrier that we have problem of listening well.

• Most of us disagree other’s point of view; therefore, our listening become weak and ineffective.

Effective listening

Listening with the conscious and explicit goal of understanding what the speaker is attempting to communicate.

Becoming an effective Listener

• Building one’s vocabulary is important as it will help him become a good reader, critical thinker, and more importantly a good listener.

Effective listener

• Clear your mind, because most of the time, the average person is thinking of secondary things while engaged in a conversation. This sort of multi-tasking can increase one’s inability to understand key elements within the conversation.

• Do not interject or interrupt. Allow the person to speak before you interrupt and say your thoughts. Most of us speak/talk while the other is talking to us.
