Purpose,ScopeandMethodThiscourseismeantasapracticalintroductiontothefieldofrarebookandspecialcollectionslibrarianship.Overthecourseoffourteenweeks,wewilldefinerarebooksandspecialcollections,learnaboutthedifferenttypesofmaterialshousedinspecialcollections,andtalkaboutwhatitmeanstobeararebookandspecialcollectionslibrarian.Wewillexaminemanyaspectsofthefield,includingcollectiondevelopment,descriptionandaccess,preservationandconservation,security,andoutreachandpromotion.Bytheendofthecourse,youwillhavegainedanunderstandingofthecurrentissuesandbestpracticesinrarebookandspecialcollectionslibrarianship.

Thiscoursewillmakeheavyuseofthecasemethod,andstudentswillgainexperienceinapplyinginformationandfindingsolutionstotypicalproblemsinrarebookandspecialcollections.Inordertogivestudentsexperienceintheessentiallycollaborativenatureofrarebookandspecialcollectionslibrarianship,thiscourse

willincludein-classgroupexercises(inoptionalface-to-faceclasses)andwrittenassignmentspreparedbypre-assignedgroupsandturnedinforagrade.Studentswillalsoworkonindividualwrittenassignmentsandwillbeencouragedtovisitrarebookandspecialcollections,antiquarianbookshops,andrelatedeventsontheirowntimeduringtheterm.

Studentsshouldbecomefamiliarwithitscontentsandbeabletousethisterminologyinwaysthatareconsistentwiththepracticesoftherarebookandspecialcollectionsfield.AlsohighlyrecommendedisGeoffreyAshallGlaister’sinexpensive,paperbackreferencework,EncyclopediaoftheBook.2nded.(NewCastle,DEandLondon:OakKnollPress&TheBritishLibrary,1996).

WrittenAssignmentsandFinalGradeStudentswillbeassignedwrittenexercisesthattesttheirabilitytosolvetypicalproblemsintherarebook/specialcollectionscontext,withreferencetopertinentsourcesanddocuments.Eachassignmentwillrequirestudentstodealwiththefollowingaspectsofprofessionalpractice:issues,majorinformationsources,andsignificantdocumentsofthefield.Forfullcredit,allwrittenassignmentsmustbesubmittedinatimelymannerandinaprofessionallyappropriateform.Sevenwrittenassignments(includinggroupassignments)andfinalsitevisitreportareweightedasfollows:

ClassParticipationBecausemuchoftheworkfortheclasswilltakeplaceduringmeetingtimesandbecausecollaborationistheusualmodeofworkinlibraries,attendanceandparticipationareimportant.Studentswhomissmorethanthreeclassmeetingscannotexpecttoreceivefullcreditforthiscourse.Thosewhoplantomissanysessionshouldlettheinstructorknowwellaheadoftimeinordertoscheduleamake-upsessionortocompleteextrawork.
Thiscoursewillmakeextensiveuseofgroupworkingradedwrittenassignmentsandin-classexercises.Inaddition,pre-assignedgroupswillberequiredtodevelopdiscussionquestionsoncoursereadingsandtoleadtheclassindiscussion(atleasttwicepergroupduringthesemester).Theinstructormayoccasionallyaskstudentstoturninexercisescompletedduringclass,andthesemaycounttowardtheclassparticipationportionofthefinalgrade.Students,workingeitherindividuallyoringroups,willbeexpectedtocompletegradedwrittenassignmentsoutsideofclass.
