From Your Governor

Greetings Lions,

December is upon us and with it we have

our Holiday gatherings; whether it be a Gala to

raise funds, a Christmas breakfast with a visit from

Santa, a Holiday gathering among Lions or a

gathering among friends and family. A season of

giving. A season where our Lionism and spirit of

giving shines through. The best thing about all

these activities that we put on this time of year, is that it makes it a great

starting point to get people interested in becoming a member.

Membership has been the hot topic the past couple years with a push to

continue to bring in new members and always trying to end your Lions

year on a positive note.

This season of giving, get those involved that are not Lions. Show

them that this spirit of giving is not just what we do during this Holiday

season but what we as an organization stand for and do for our

communities all through the year. Then after they’ve had a fun and

fulfilling time helping serve their community, invite them to join. So often

we serve, and let opportunities to increase our membership pass us by,

simply because we fail to ask them the simple question; “Would you like

to join the Lions Club?”

Some may be enthusiastic and jump right in, others may take

some more convincing while others yet may just not find being apart of

the organization for them, however the important thing is to ask, because

if you don’t ask the answer is always no.

Have fun and stay safe this Holiday Season. Merry Christmas and

Happy Holidays.

Oregon Lions At Oregon Lions Club regular meeting on November

14th the guest speaker was Rob Gieraltowski, Executive

Director of Lutheran Outdoors Ministries Center in Oregon.

LOMC is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in

America. In its hundreds of acres, it provides an opportunity

for a variety of people to enjoy the great outdoors. It is located

just south of IL Route 64 on IL Route 2. Mr. Gieraltowski

described what LOMC has to offer to individuals and groups

Oregon Lions Help Fund VFW Christmas Baskets

At their Christmas Meeting on December 12 the Oregon Lions made a

$1000 donation to help defray the cost of the Christmas Baskets that the

Oregon VFW members distribute at this time of the year.Oregon Lions

Lena Lions

Lena Lions held a recent Hal-loween Party. We had a lot of really cute costumes.

A memorial was given for Lion Dave Gruendler, by his wife Jo-anne. Nine trees were planted

around Lena. 3 at the Jaycees Park, 3 at the Historical Museum and 3 at the new Volunteer Park. We were blessed by this gift from Joanne and happy we could share that with the communi-ty of Lena. Lions Jim Cox, Connie Kraft and Marcia Meyers are also pictured with Joanne Gruendler.

Orangeville Lions The Orangeville Lions have had a very busy five months! They helped with the food truck, were also was in Lena parade, plus 2 of their own parades; Fireman Feast Orangeville High School ! Zone meetings, Peace Posters and our 1 st. place made it 1st at District meeting! ON TO SOMETHING BETTER! Now our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place where the ones I picked!

Morrison Lions

Morrison Lions Recycle Chairperson Lion Bob Smith presented a check to Whiteside County Fair Board Member Karl Kovarik, The donation, received from community members taking advantage of Recycle day, was donated back to the Fair Board in appreciation for the use of the fair grounds for the Annual Lions Recycle Day. The donation will be used towards the cost of installation of new grandstand bleachers.

Music Dept. donation

Morrison Lions Club approved a donation to the Performing Arts Department at the high school to be used in updating the sound system. President Darlene Smith presented the check to the director with hap-py musicians observing the presentation.

TAMPICO LIONS CLUB #280 INSTALLS NEW MEMBERS At the Monday December 9th, meeting Lion President Connie Mikles installed 4 people as new members. Lion 2nd Vice President Jessica Todd sponsored Robert Sigel and Lion 1st Vice, Membership Chairperson, and Coordinator Terry Gaskill sponsored Alice Grimes, Tom & Regi Fortune. The club greatly appreciated the new members and they were congratulated by the members present with applause.

Leaf River Lions Christmas The Leaf River Lions held their Christmas Party at the White Pines Lodge where a delicious

meal was enjoyed. After the meal the Club sang a few Christmas Carols led by Lion Sid An-

derson. After the singing it was time to divide into two team, select a “captain” and then

decorate each teams captain like a Christmas Tree! A lot of fun and good fellowship was

had by all that attended.

Veterans Update 2019 The Veterans are doing well “Thank You to the Lions clubs that keep visiting” that means a lot to the Vets. Keep in mind your club can visit and have lunch or dinner “you can bring it and serve it if you like” the Veterans always appreciate the company! If your club is looking for something to do for the Vets, try putting baskets in local businesses and churches and ask everyone to fill them with items for the Veterans” if you need a list of items feel free to contact me for the list? If I recall this was very well received in Lena and a couple of other areas. Another suggestion was large jars or containers taking donations to purchase bus passes for the Vets to use to get to Dr. and other appointments. These are given out by Pat Ambrose on a as needed basis. She keeps a tight rein on the passes! Passes can be purchased from the RMTD Bus Depot office for $1.50 each! Let’s keep in mind that we have a lot of vets that spend the brutal winter months out-side while we are snug in our homes! So!! anything your club can do to support them with visits or food or collections I know it will be greatly appreciated! With the many things we as clubs are planning on doing this year please let’s keep the Veterans in our minds and hearts, they were there for us and it’s now our turn! Leaf River Lions

The Leaf River Lions sold their Hams again

this year for Christmas. The Hams arrived

on December 4 and the club gets together

in Lion Paul’s garage to weigh and price

them. This year 374 hams were ordered

with only a few remaining. Picture at right

is President Kathy, Lions Laura, Sid, Terri

and Curt assisting.

The Hams arrived around 7:30, an hour

ahead of schedule, but as Lions do,

they came, went to work, had fun, and

were done around 10:30. The hams

sold for $3.25 per pound and there are

some 10 –11 pounders

remaining so call Lion Paul

if you would like one.

Leaf River Lions

The Leaf River Lions will be conducting a drive for Loaves & Fish Food Pantry In

Mt. Morris. At the January 11, 2020 breakfast please bring some type of

commodity or cash donation to help the Loaves & Fish Food Pantry feed people

in our community. Paper Products, canned goods and personal items are great.

Please no OUT DATED items. You may leave a cash donation as well. The Pan-

try is able to turn that $1.00 into more than $4.00 when they purchase food

items.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Christmas is Over!

The Leaf River Lions will also be collecting your old Christmas lights at the

January 11 breakfast. If you want to get rid of those old working or non-

working Christmas Lights the Lions can help you! Just bring your old Christmas

lights to the January 11 Breakfast and there will be a drop off box for you to

place them in. There will also be an eyeglass box for your unused eyeglasses.

Just drop them in!

District Newsletter Submission Guidelines

When submitting articles for the monthly Newsletter it is recommended the narrative is in WORD

format and pictures are in JPEG format. Narratives can be copied right from your email If you prefer to

do that, however ALL pictures should be ATTACHED and not included in the narrative. Anything

submitted in PDF format can only be inserted as they are sent to me, I am not able to edit them. There-

for anything submitted in PDF format should be a flyer or advertisement about your activity.

Submission timelines: Club Articles—by First of the month, no later than the 5th

Page Flyers or advertisements in PDF format by the 5th of each month.

Governor and Vice Governor articles by the 10th of each month

Advertising of your event or fundraiser can be run for 3 consecutive months if you submit them on time.

How they Forecast a Cold Winter One day in early September the Chief of a Native Tribe was asked by his Tribal leaders

if the winter of 2011/2012 was going to be cold or mild. The Chief asked his Medicine Man,

but he too had lost touch with reading the signs from the natural world around the Great

Lakes.

In truth, neither of them had any idea of how to predict the coming winter. However

the Chief decided to take a modern approach and call the National Weather Service in

Gaylord Michigan. “Yes, it is going to be a cold winter”, the Meteorologist told the Chief.

Consequently, the Chief went to his tribe and told his men to collect plenty of wood for the

winter.

A fortnight later the Chief again called the Weather Service and asked for an update,

“Are you still forecasting a cold winter”, the Chief asked. Yes, very cold the weather officer

told him.

As a result of this brief conversation the Chief went back to his tribe and told the

people they needed to collect every bit of wood they could find. A month later the Chief

called the National Weather Service once more and asked about the coming winter. “Yes”,

he was told, “It was going to be one of the coldest winters ever.”

“How can you be so sure,” the Chief asked. The Weatherman replied, “because the

Native Americans of the Great Lakes are collecting wood like crazy.”

CSH’s Low Vision and Deaf

Seniors’ Groups joined together to

kickoff the holiday season with a

special luncheon in our community

room on Wednesday, November 20.

Dr. Jon Russell, one of our two Low Vision Optometrists, livened up the

crowd with trivia questions and vision related prizes, including

sunglasses and magnifiers, for each person who answered correctly.

Once the prizes were gone, CSH staff members

and Lions volunteers lined up to serve heaping

plates of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes,

cranberry sauce, and salad to our friends. We’d like

to extend a warm thank you and our appreciation

for each of the Lions who helped spread some

holiday cheer with us!
