PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

03 OCTOBER 2019 THE LION

Dr. Jung-Yul ChoiInternational President, Lions Clubs International

Greetings, Lions.

Regardless of where you live, the change of the seasons comes with certain rituals. For many of us, those rituals involve food. Whether it's the smell of your grandmother's soup or your neighbor's hot dogs on the grill, the smells of the season fill you with warm memories.

But that may not be the case for those living with hunger. For many, this time of year brings fear and anxiety. Yet another cold winter to make it through with little to eat. Or one more long hot summer without a school lunch for a hungry child.

As Lions, it's our responsibility to help those who need us. No one in our communities should wonder where their next meal is coming from. But whenever possible, we should look beyond the short-term fixes. Yes, we should stock food pantries and man soup kitchens. But we should also look at the bigger picture. What is causing our neighbors to be hungry? And how can we, as Lions, help change the odds for families that are struggling?

Everyone should have the opportunity to make choices that are good for their health. Everyone should have access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Everyone should be able to take a walk in a park or have a safe, reliable way to get to work.

So, when there is a gap—no grocery store for miles, no reliable transportation, no parks—Lions can help repair those holes in our communities. We can form the social safety nets that keep our neighbors living healthy, fulfilling lives.

As you plan your holiday meals or fire up your summer grills, think of what ways your community could be better serving everyone. And find a way to fix it.

Sincerely,

Lions Can Fill the Gaps

EDITORIAL CHAIRMAN SPEAKS

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”Dear Friends in Lionism,

Greetings and good wishes!

Often known as the diabetes capital of the world, India has been witnessing an alarming rise in the

incidence of diabetes, according to the International Journal of Diabetes in Developing Countries.

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The number of people with diabetes has nearly quadrupled since 1980. Prevalence is increasing worldwide, particularly in low and middle-income countries. The causes are complex, but could in part be a result of increase in obesity, and lack of physical activity.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India had 69.2 million people living with diabetes in 2015. It is estimated that the 98 million people in India may have type 2 diabetes by 2030. Diabetes of all types can lead to complications in many parts of the body including heart attack, stroke, retinopathy, nephropathy and nephropathy. Diabetic patients are at a greater risk of premature death.

Managing diabetes is not science, it is an art. Early diagnosis and intervention is the starting point for living well with diabetes. Diabetes is the signature cause of Lions and Leos around the world. This year we are teaming up with the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) to increase awareness about this silent killer disease that affects 1 in 11 people.

Friends in Service, this is a call urging you to participate in our challenge to screen 1 million people for type 2 diabetes by November 14, 2019. Your club can make a difference by participating, encouraging others to participate in the online risk assessment or organizing a diabetes screening project in your community.

Join me to educate communities to better understand, prevent and care for diabetes. Act now!

Let our lives be a message of service

Vijay Kumar RajuChairman, Board of Management, The Lion (India)Trustee & Secretary, LCIFInternational Director, LCI (2016-18)

Dear Lions,

I had the rare privilege of attending t h e I n t e r n a t i o n a l E d i t o r s Conference, organised by Lions Clubs International, on 11th September at Dublin, Ireland. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet and exchange ideas with my

counterparts from different countries. Mr.Sanjeev Ahuja, Editor-in-Chief and Mr.Christopher Bunch, Managing Editor of ‘The Lion’ magazine, led the discussions.

As you are all aware, Lions are passionate about ‘Protecting the Environment.’ In fact, this is one of our five global service causes and our clubs focus on various service projects in this area. Increasingly, organizations the world over are waking up to the benefits of ‘Paperless communication.’ The paper industry is one of the largest consumers of energy. Producing paper also means cutting down trees, using up precious water and releasing harmful emissions in the air. Saving paper was discussed at length during the Editors Conference. The international edition published from our headquarters, has already brought down the print issues to four issues per year since 2018. Going forward, from July 2020, this will be further reduced to two printed issues only and the rest would be in digital format.

In India, we still continue to print our magazine, because of the postal concession we enjoy, if we print 11 issues in a year. We also digitize all the issues which can be viewed on www.lionsclubs.org. in/magazine/.

The Magazine Board of India will soon decide on how many issues of the magazine we need to print to save paper and protect our environment. What is your opinion, dear reader? Could we look at printing only two issues, one in July and another in January, with the rest being digital issues? Please email your valuable suggestions to [email protected]

All good wishes for the festive season.

Regards

Er. R. MuruganEditor, The Lion (India)Past International Director, [email protected]

07 OCTOBER 2019 THE LION

Diabetes is a global epidemic, and one of the fastest-growing in the world. In 2017, 425 million adults were living with

diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) expects that number to rise

to 629 million by the year 2045. Through Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service, Lions have an opportunity to be a major part of the response to this global epidemic. LCIF will support

Lions in helping prevent diabetes through multi-faceted, comprehensive health initiatives targeting communities across the globe.

Diabetes grants fund large-scale, Lions-led projects that expand diabetes prevention, education, and treatment access to

underserved populations. In the 2018-2019 fiscal year, LCIF awarded 31 Diabetes grants globally, totaling US$2,293,573. Three of those grants were awarded to Lions in India, for a total of US$363,888.Read about how District 318C is utilizing their LCIF Diabetes Grant on page 12

08

Diabetes grants enable LCIF to make efficient and effective investments through the following initiatives:Ÿ Sustaining and establishing world-class diabetes

management and control services through diabetes camps, comprehensive diabetes screening events, healthcare infrastructure and human resource capacity building

Ÿ Establishing an operational research program that will investigate gaps between the accessibility and affordability of comprehensive diabetes care and communities in need of services

Ÿ Increasing comprehensive diabetes screening and health education activities linked to primary and secondary healthcare services.

LCIF is collaborating with the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF) to deliver vital health services for diabetes and diabetes-related health issues. The project, “Promote Early Prevention and Better Management of Diabetes Complications,” is a comprehensive diabetes and diabetic retinopathy care project. LCIF and WDF are both proudly contributing US$215,000 toward the project.

The efforts will reach six regions in the south-eastern European country of Georgia. With help from nearby Lions and local partners, the project will establish centers for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, and will provide eye screenings and diabetic foot care. In addition, a mobile diabetes unit will reach remote areas of Georgia. Screenings at these centers will be provided at no cost for all patients, and treatment of diabetes complications will be of no cost for socially vulnerable population groups.

A Growing Problem in IndiaWithin International Diabetes Federation’s Southeast Asia (SEA) region, which includes the countries of India, Maldives, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Mauritius, there are 82 million people with diabetes. India is home to nearly 88 percent of that population and is the country with the second-largest number of adults with diabetes in the world. In 2017, there were more than 72 million cases. That's nearly nine percent of the Indian population. Here are a few more startling statistics:Ÿ The number of people in the SEA region is expected to

increase by more than double by 2045, projecting 151 million adults with the disease.

Ÿ India is the country with the second-largest number of children with type 1 diabetes. Approximately 1,28,500 children have been diagnosed.

Ÿ While the global percentage of people who unknowingly have diabetes is 50 percent, in India, that number increases to 58 percent.

Ÿ Nearly one million people die from diabetes each year in India.

Len Dompke holds up the pants he wore to his very first “Jumpstart Your Health” class. Dompke is grateful to Lions for the support he needed to make lasting changes. Photo courtesy of Edward-Elmhurst Health.

It's an easy, 12-minute drive from Len Dompke's suburban Chicago home to the local hospital. Yet, the first time Dompke made the drive, it was one of the hardest of his life. Making this drive meant recognizing and changing some unhealthy habits, which was not going to be easy.

Dompke was headed straight for type 2 diabetes. That was before making the drive—each week for a year—to Elmhurst Hospital. If something didn't change, he was going to become one of the 400 million world citizens living with the disease.

District 1-J Lions partnered with Edward-Elmhurst Health (EEH) to develop a diabetes prevention and lifestyle intervention program, which received a US$95,000 grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF). Thanks to this incredible teamwork, Dompke has a new lease on life.

A Preventable TrendType 2 diabetes is a disease in which the body does not properly use insulin. Diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including skin conditions, eye problems, and nerve damage. Left unchecked, it can lead to premature death. The number of people living with diabetes has risen from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014 and continues to rise, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The good news is that with changes to diet and lifestyle, type 2 diabetes can be prevented. And that is where Lions get involved.

LCIF diabetes grants can provide Lions with up to US$250,000. Projects typically support diabetes prevention, education, and improved access to treatment for underserved populations. LCIF also supports diabetic retinopathy programs through SightFirst.

Lions Heed the CallThe program that helped put Len Dompke’s life back on track, Jumpstart Your Health, is focused squarely on providing education and resources to low-income adults at risk of developing diabetes. Local Lions, backed by that US$95,000 grant from LCIF and health professionals at EEH, are integral to the program's success. Each District 1-J Lion involved in the project is trained to be a community ambassador who can advocate for diabetes prevention, facilitate informational meetings, interact with program participants, and host fundraising events. It's a classic example of Lions doing what they do best—serving!

Lion Patty Worden worked diligently alongside her club members to raise their portion of the funding needed for the Jumpstart Your Health program. “I was quite surprised when I took that A1C test and found out I was prediabetic. After going through the program, I'm tracking my steps, drinking more water, serving more fresh foods. I feel better and make healthier decisions,”

says Worden. “I also have the added benefit of knowing that my classmates wouldn't have been able to take this class without the support of my Lions club. We have worked so hard to provide this for our community. I'm so proud to be a Lion!”

An Inspirational SuccessAfter a very honest discussion with his doctor and unexpected knee surgery, Dompke, 61, mustered the courage to make a phone call that would change his life. He was determined to turn things around and get healthy. Forever.

Dompke had tried, unsuccessfully, to lose weight on his own. Jumpstart Your Health was the lifeline he needed. “Finally, everything made sense: nutrition, exercise and support are all equal parts of the equation. The program is more than just a diet. It's a lifestyle change, and it gave me the tools I needed to make changes for good,” explains Dompke. “The classes were interesting, the materials were easy to read, the goals were realistic, my instructors were compassionate and smart, and no one judged anyone.”

Dompke is now a stronger, healthier, and 80-pounds-lighter version of his former self. Best of all, with the support of Lions and grant funding from LCIF, he is no longer at risk of developing diabetes.

“Thank you, Lions! I want everyone to know how much good you're doing for our communities every single day,” says Dompke.

Measurable ImpactIndividuals at risk of developing type 2 diabetes are offered enrollment in Jumpstart Your Health in attempts to both stave off the disease and improve overall health and quality of life. In just over a year, the program screened 211 individuals, of whom 8% were diabetic and didn’t know. Another 31% were prediabetic. Of those with prediabetes, 57% enrolled in the program.

A simple blood test can help diagnose diabetes and put those affected on a course to healthier living.

The Jumpstart Your Health program, supported by both Lions of District 1-J and LCIF, has been cited twice for “effectively delivering a quality, evidence-based program that meets all the standards for CDC [Centers for Disease Control] recognition,” putting the program into an elite group of diabetes prevention programs. In fact, only one other hospital in the state of Illinois offers a curriculum that has received this honor. Fortunately for Dompke, the program at Edward-Elmhurst Health was just minutes away.

Lions are committed to improving the quality of life for people worldwide who are living with diabetes.

District 318C receives anLCIF Diabetes Grant for its flagship project

According to a recent report, an estimated 19.6% of Kerala’s population in the age group of 30-65 years is diabetic. This is the highest in India, and more than double the national average of 8%.

Considering the critical importance of this community need, District Governor Rajesh Kolarikkal (District 318C) has chosen diabetes as

the Flagship Project of the year. The focus will be on detection and management of the disease, with the help of ASHA workers. The project will be supported by the Department of Community Medicine, Amritha Institute of Medical Sciences and the National Health Mission(NHM).

The District received an LCIF Diabetes Grant of US$71,610 for this project. The grant will be utilized to train Lion volunteers and ASHA workers, conduct referral screening camps, educate patients on diabetes management, and provide advice on medication. Several full-day training camps have already been conducted. The first referral screening camp was held on September 28, 2019. 125 referred patients underwent three tests. It is proposed to conduct 11 more training programmes for ASHA workers and 50 more referral camps during the Lionistic Year.

Doing their bit to eradicate hunger, Mysore Nisarga and Mayur Lions Clubs, came together to set up the ‘Hasivu Nivarana Kendra’ (Hunger Relief Centre), at Mysuru. Inaugurated on 4th October 2018, by the then District Governor V.Renukumar, PMJF in the presence of local leaders and Lion dignitaries, this first-of-its-kind project in the city by Lions began by providing wholesome meals to about 25-30 people every day. Till date, the Centre has served food to more than 10,000 hungry people and has recently entered into an understanding with the Akshaya Aahara Foundation, Mysuru to supply fresh meals every day.

More than just foodBesides providing food to the hungry, the Centre also conducts Diabetes Camps on the second Saturday of every month. The Centre stocks used clothes and other utility items for the needy.

When helping hands come together…For an idea to become a reality, many caring hearts and helping hands need to come together.

The former Mayor of Mysore City Corporation Mr.Byrappa provided space, free of cost, at the Corporation Building, at J.P.Nagar, Mysuru. Canara Bank Welfare Association

To hundreds of patients and their attendants at the Regional Cancer Centre and the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram, afternoons bring a touch of sunshine into their bleak lives. For a little while, the warmth of a nutritious, piping-hot meal served with compassion and equally warm smiles makes them forget their pain and difficulties.

Yes, the noon meals project of District 318A not only serves food to 350-400 people every day, but also serves hope. Come rain or shine, this is a project that has been continuing uninterrupted every single day, since it began in the Centennial Year by the then District Governor Alex Kuriakose.

The beneficiaries - most of them from Kerala and Tamil Nadu - enjoy the afternoon lunch every day, as long as they are admitted in the hospitals. Each day, the faces change.

Newly admitted patients, their attendants and sometimes the poor in the vicinity, line up to get a wholesome and tasty meal, prepared in very hygienic conditions in the modern kitchen of M/s Pankaja Kasthuri, Thiruvananthapuram. The meals are personally served by Lions, Lion Ladies and Leos, under a specially-erected canopy in the Hospital premises.

The meals are sponsored by the Lions of various Clubs in the District, during auspicious occasions and family events. Some of the poor beneficiaries pointed out that the quality of the food served is far better than that of the food served in hotels or even prepared at their own homes.

The total cost of this project is `22 lakhs per annum.

“Learning is not a one-time event or a periodic luxury. Great leaders in great companies recognize that the ability to constantly learn, innovate, and improve is vital to their success.” These words by Amy Edmondson - the Novartis Professor of Leadership and Management at the Harvard Business School - aptly sum up the spirit of the Presidential Academy, an initiative of the MD 320. Held every year under the guidance and able leadership ofPID R.Sunil Kumar, the Presidential Academy aims at honing the leadership skills of Club Presidents to help them inspire more, serve more and achieve more.

This year, the Presidential Academy was organized on August 18th at the Classic Garden Auditorium in Secunderabad, for all the Club

Presidents of MD 320. The agenda was designed with a laser-sharp focus on giving insights to Presidents on how to lead their Clubs effectively and efficiently. Keeping in mind the concept of Global Action Team, the subjects were tailored to make Club Presidents a true GAT Chairperson. They were taught about the importance of GAT at the Club-level and how to build a team for better results.

Making a Difference, Art of Leadership, Creativity, Innovation, Thinking Out-Of-The-Box, People Management, Knowledge Management, Personal Discipline and Punctuality, Traits of a CEO, Self Esteem, Being a Role Model, Etiquette, etc., were some of the thought-provoking topics covered by the experienced faculty.

Past District Governors - both recent and seasoned - shared their experiences and answered the various and interesting questions raised by the Presidents.

Another highlight of the programme was the knowledge-sharing by a panel comprising the Best Presidents of 2018-19, from each District of the Multiple. The Presidents on the panel shared their experience about how they could achieve their goals, how they planned their year, the challenges they faced and how they could overcome obstacles and the successful implementation of innovative service projects.

District 322FProject Dhoop-Chav - A simple initiative with far-reaching effects.

Sometimes, the smallest of things can make a big difference, and Lions have seen this happen again and again. A seemingly humble service project has

a ripple effect - leading to a healthier, happier community. The Dhoop-Chav project of District 322F is a perfect example of this.

Rain, rain go away...For millions of poor people, the vagaries of weather are more than just an inconvenience; they can take a toll on their health and play havoc with their livelihood.

Summers can be hot and scorching. And monsoons can be unpredictable and excessive. Both bring their own set of problems. For daily wage labourers, bad weather translates into poor earnings. For students of Government schools, rain-soaked uniforms and books are just one part of the story. Cold and fever are something they can ill-afford.

A simple solutionTo protect the underprivileged from the sun and rain, District 322F came up with the Dhoop-Chav Project.

More than 100 Clubs of the district participated in the ‘One District-One Activity’ project and distributed over

4700 umbrellas to underprivileged school children, daily wage earners, traffic police and postmen, across the region of North Bengal, Malda and Sikkim.

The cost of each umbrella was `200 the Lions Clubs and the Lions District Administration shared the cost equally. The umbrellas sported the Lions Logo, seamlessly blending a service activity with a PR initiative.

Inspired by the success of the project, the District plans to make this an annual activity and also identify other innovative projects that would have a far-reaching impact on the society.

Can you imagine what Melvin Jones would think if he knew the organization he founded in 1917 now has more than 1.4 million Lions volunteering around the world?

What started with a small group of businesspeople to improve Jones' Chicago community is now the largest service organization in the world. The charitable arm of LCI, Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), helps to fund that service.

As the challenges facing our world expand, so too must our capacity to provide help to those in need. That's why LCIF created Campaign 100: LCIF Empowering Service. Campaign 100 has a big goal: to raise US$300 million dollars to help Lions like you do even more for the communities you serve.

We Are Increasing Service Impact We are continuing to serve in our core cause areas and are empowering Lions to do even more than ever before.

Vision - We lead the global charge to eliminate infectious blindness, reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment, and improve quality of life for those who are blind or visually impaired.

Youth - We serve youth through improved access to quality education, vital health services, inclusive social and recreational opportunities, and Lions Quest, LCIF's social and emotional learning curriculum.

Disaster Relief - We deeply engage in disaster relief efforts and in preparing for, and responding to, natural disasters whenever and wherever they strike.

Humanitarian Causes - We sponsor and deliver programs that address the distinct needs of at-risk and vulnerable populations such as the elderly, the disabled, females, orphans, and others disproportionately impacted by social and economic factors.

We Are Fighting DiabetesLCIF empowers Lions to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve quality of life for those diagnosed. Together, we are responding to this global epidemic, helping prevent diabetes through multi-faceted, comprehensive health initiatives targeted to the communities where we live and serve.

We Are Expanding Our Global CausesWe are identifying areas of greatest need and opportunity; conducting pilot projects to develop expertise; and building sustainable, long-term programs related to:

Hunger - We are helping create communities where everyone has access to nutritious food, expanding resources and infrastructure needed to address food shortages worldwide.

Childhood Cancer - We are strengthening medical and social services, working to increase life expectancy of children living with cancer, and enhancing quality of life for them and their families.

Environment - We protect the environmental health of our global communities through establishing water sanitation systems, cleaning public parks, planting trees, and more, generating long-term, positive ecological impact.

A Foundation for Service

Growing up without parents is a hard life enough. But it's even worse when an

orphanage is not able to provide everything children need to be happy and healthy. Despite loving and nurturing caretakers, in less fortunate areas, there just isn't enough to go around. Compelled to serve youth, Lions take action. In Korea, Lions used a District & Club Community Impact grant from Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) to personally deliver simple but much-needed supplies to children living at an orphanage in Vietnam.

At MáiẤmTừTâm Orphanage, the luxury of shoes—much less sports equipment—is unaffordable. “The children aren't able to be children and play,” says Hyun-Jun Lee, president of Han Seo Lions Club in Korea. “The shoes they receive through donations are old, but must be kept for long-term use.”

The limitations the children lived with had Lions concerned. Knowing the kids did not have proper shoes to protect their feet or games to let their

little imaginations run wild made them want to create a plan. The Lions decided to raise money and apply for an LCIF grant, which would enable them to make a difference in the lives of these children.

With the spirit of service, fifteen Lions from Han Seo Lions Club packaged loads of goods and began their journey. They left from Incheon, Korea and traveled more than 2,000 miles to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, bringing new shoes, sports equipment, school supplies, kitchen utensils, and food to 95 children. The children were delighted. They can now play sports like soccer, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. After unloading the supplies, the Lions played games with the children before enjoying some barbeque for lunch.

“We chose to visit this orphanage to make a small difference. We wanted to spread hope to children growing up without parents, share a pair of shoes, and laugh together,” says Lee. “The teachers and children were so

happy and thankful for the abundance of unexpected donations we were able to provide.”

The joy brought to the children living at MáimTTâm Orphanage was made possible by a District & Club Community Impact grant (DCG). This uniquely designed program enables clubs and districts to receive grants of up to 15 percent of their unrestricted donations to LCIF in a given Lion year. A valuable way to address community needs, the funding could help Lions provide comfort to a sick child, plant trees in a local park, or purchase nutritious food for hungry neighbors. Visit lionsclubs.org/grants to learn more.

Visit lionsclubs.org/campaign100 to learn how LCIF and Campaign 100 will empower Lions to serve youth through improved access to quality education, vital health services, inclusive social and recreational opportunities, and positive development programs.

OCTOBER 2019 THE LION 38

Hello friends, if I once again ask you now - what is GAT,I am sure most of you will confidently say Global Action Team. Well that’s great for a start.

In our earlier article, we emphasized that GAT is all about synergy and about being proactive in building up this synergy, and through it, creating success stories.

I suggest to each of you to go and stand in front of a mirror. Ponder for minute at what you see. You will say - well, obviously I see myself. Very true. But have you ever considered that the very human body that you take for granted is, in it’s very own way, the best living example of GAT success.

We have our five senses, which are the information inputs. We have the brain that processes the inputs, plans a response and instructs the body for action (Leadership). We have the limbs and other body parts (Membership), which, through the muscles, transform these instructions into action (Service). For the human body to function normally and perfectly, everything has to be in synergy.

Try and think of just two more slogans that fit the acronym GAT. We can come up with - Get A Team and Get Ahead Together. I’m sure you could come up with a few more. But these two came to mind instantly and what struck me

immediately was that they both imply synergy, cohesion and action! So friends, these properties are built into the DNA of GAT, and if you think about it for a moment, they are also the very basis of GAT.

The first slogan above - Get A Team - applies across all levels of GAT. If you don’t have a team, you’re not going anywhere! GAT is a Team Effort, not a one-man show. So dear GAT leaders at all levels, make sure your GAT Teams are in place. If not in place yet, that’s your first priority! It’s

not too late to start.

The next slogan - Get Ahead Together - implies action and synergy. The teams must move the program for ward a long the guidelines and plans made, and they must act in cohesion with each other. Each District/Club has made plans. B u t w h o m a k e s u p t h e District/Club? Not just the District

Governor or Club President! It is each and every member whose support, commitment and action matters. If we visualize the District/Club as a human body, then visualize yourself - the Lion - as the muscles that have the power to move that body, to achieve the goals.

So, now that each individual Lion’s role as a prime mover is clear, let’s see how we can go about getting the best out of this initiative.

YOU LEAD GAT SUCCESS

Try and think of just two more slogans that fit the acronym GAT.

We can come up with Get A Team

and Get Ahead Together.

Page 39: Lions Fight Diabetes · Lions and local partners, the project will establish centers for diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, and will provide eye screenings

OCTOBER 2019 THE LION 39

If we say we are the prime movers, then each of us Lions - individually and collectively - is responsible for their Club’s success. This is why each Club President must ensure that all members are involved and actively participate in their Club’s undertakings and the Club’s success.

You may think - “Well, that’s great! But where does GAT fit into all this?”

The answer is simply this - GAT was conceived to be the encouraging and empowering entity for the future success of our organization. GAT provides

all the tools and resources enabling well trained Leadership to guide motivated members to render impactful service.

I request each of you to just check out the website https://lionsclubs.org/en/resources-for-members/resource-center/global-action-team-resources once, and you will be amazed to see the tools that are available. And they are available to you - absolutely free - just because you’re a Lion! It’s up to you to take advantage of the value being offered.

I would also like to elaborate a bit on the important role of Zone Chairpersons and Past District Governors in the GAT ladder.

Zone Chairpersons - you form a vital link between the District Administration and the Club Administration. Make it a point to give special priority and importance to GAT at all Zone Advisory meetings and during your club visits. Please also discuss individually with the Club Presidents in your Zones, to clarify any doubts and guide the Club GLT, GMT, and GST Chairpersons on how to fulfill their roles effectively, in coordination with the District GLT, GMT and GST Coordinators.

Dear Past District Governors, you too, are a most valuable resource we are blessed with, across the various Districts. You have invaluable experience in handling all the three verticals of GAT, which may not have been so clearly defined in earlier years. You are respected and senior leaders who are welcome everywhere. Recognizing this, LCI has

designated all Past Governors as GAT Ambassadors and exhorted you ‘Lions’ to emerge from your caves and roar once again. A GAT Ambassador tool kit has also been developed and made available to assist you in this role. The link for this kit is https://lionsclubs.org/en/resources-for-m e m b e r s / r e s o u r c e - c e n t e r / g l o b a l - a c t i o n -team/ambassador-toolkit. I humbly request all respected Past Governors to take up this mantle seriously and contribute your time and talent as best as possible.

GAT has over 300,000 Lions working in synergy across the length and breadth of India for Club success. For all of us to know how we are faring and what we are achieving, reporting and communication are very important. We love to hear about your successes.

However, given the variety of cultures and differing regional preferences across which we work, we do understand that there will be varying challenges to be countered, to ensure success. So feel free to talk to us, through your local GLT, GMT, GST teams. Share the challenges you face. Our GAT leadership, at various levels is here to work with you to resolve any difficulties faced.

And finally, my dear friends, remember, GAT is not like a tap - whose water flows downward out of a spout. On the contrary, it is like a spring or a fountain - which shoots upward from the grass roots level and takes its success to the top.

The success of GAT is in your power. Let’s not just GET to the top - let’s GAT to the top!

And please feel free to contact me any time, for any assistance.

Thank you

According to UNICEF, “Children with disabilities are one of the most marginalized and excluded groups in society. Facing daily discrimination in the form of negative attitudes, lack of adequate policies and legislation, they are effectively barred from realizing their rights to healthcare, education, and even survival.” (www.unicef.org/disabilities)

Helping to ease their burden and make their lives a little easier is the Indore Happy Couple Lions Club. Under the guidance of District Governor Ajay Sengar, the Club has joined hands with Viklang Kalyan Sangh, for the well-being of differently-abled children.

The Club has set up a 450 sq ft. hall, which houses an E-Library equipped

with six computers and having 24x7 internet access. This will open up a world of learning opportunities for the children. There is also a physical Library in the same premises with more than 500 books on a wide variety of subjects.

A residential hostel is also being run as a part of this joint project. Currently, there are 39 differently-abled children who call this their home. Both accommodation and food is provided free of cost, to the students.

Ably managed by PDG Dr.Jawahar Bihani, this joint project has been greatly appreciated by both Lions and non-Lions. In fact, several clubs in Indore and its vicinity, as well as clubs from other states like Gujarat,

Maharashtra and Rajasthan have come forward to lend a helping hand through many ways. Besides cash donations, many people are happy to sponsor a onetime meal, which costs just `1,100/-, during birthdays, anniversaries or other auspicious occasions.

The water crisis in India is worsening with almost 50% of the country's population believed to be grappling with drought-like conditions. Harvesting rainwater is crucial in conserving this limited resource. Taking a step in the right direction is the Ujjain Mahakal Lions Club. As part of a District program, the Club set up a rooftop rain water harvesting system at a local factory, comprising an area of 28,000 sq.ft. The water collected at six locations successfully recharged two tube-wells.

Poor menstrual hygiene not only hampers mobility and the day-to-day activities of women, it can cause grievous harm to their health. According to a report published in the website of wash-united.org - “Many girls and women face challenges with managing their periods safely. In addition to persisting taboos, women and girls’ capacity to manage their periods is affected by a number of other factors, including limited access to affordable and hygienic sanitary materials and disposal options, leaving many to manage their periods in ineffective, uncomfortable and unhygienic ways.”

It is to address these issues that the Aurangabad Angels Lions Club came together with Endress + Hauser Flowetec India Pvt. Ltd., to install Sanitary Napkin Vending Machines and Disposable Machines across four different locations in Aurangabad, viz.,Ÿ Municipal School, Bajipura Ÿ Municipal School, Kiradpura Ÿ Municipal Hospital, N-8, Near Baliram Patil High

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 54.4% of Indians are physically inactive. This translates into high obesity, high disease burden and deaths. Not to mention the impact this has on our productivity and our health expenditure. Medicines are one of the biggest expenses for an Indian household. It is in this background that the Fit India Movement was launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at a function organised to mark the National Sports Day on August 29, 2019 in New Delhi. The objective of this nation-wide movement is to encourage people to remain healthy and fit by incorporating physical activities and sports in their daily lives.Another great way to serveFit India provides an excellent opportunity to the Lions of India to actively participate in this mission. Besides making our fellow-Indians healthier, this movement will alsogive visibility to the Lions at the national level.
