Linguistics, Pronunciation and

Phonics!!!!!!!! (and the villagers rejoice)

Linguistics, Pronunciation and Phonics is brought to you by T-Time English.

Goals!•A brief intro to linguistics. •Use linguistics to look at why certain

problems occur and/or reoccur. •Give examples of solutions to use in

the classroom.

Intro to Linguistics (言語)

• Scientific study of language. • It is a sub-discipline (学問分野の下位区

分) of anthropology (人類学) .

Parts of Linguistics

• Phonetics (音声学)• Phonology (音韻論)• Morphology (形態論)• Syntax (統語論)• Semantics ( 意味論)• Many other insignificant yet wildly fascinating subsections

exist, however, we have neither the time nor the desire to waste any of our precious 70 minutes on them.

Phonetics and Phonology (No, not fun-ology)

• Phonetics: Study of how speech sounds are made.

• Phonology: The organization of language sounds.

Morphology and Syntax

• Morphology: Study of the structure of words.

• Syntax: Study of how words combine to make grammatical phrases and sentences. ex. Why what we wrote above makes any sense to

anyone…

Semantics

• Semantics: This is the study of the meaning of words.

(Don’t worry. There is no meaning behind putting this topic on a slide of its own.)

Bad joke time: Which came first- semantics or its meaning?
