LEASED CHASSIS FLEET STABILIZES IN 1991The U.S. leased container chassis

fleet grew by only about 500 un its in1990, according to the Institute of In-ternational Container Lessors(IICL).

"IICL estimates that in January1991 the leasing company fleet ofU.S. chassis stood at 181,456," saidEdward Woolley, secretary of thecontainer and chassis leasing asso-ciation.

At the beginning of 1990, IICLestimated the leased fleet totaled181,002 units. These figu res includeunits owned by all chassis leasingcompanies. Steamship lines areestimated to own about 125,000units, meaning the total U.S. chassisfleet comprises more than 300,000units.IICL FLEET In January of this year, thechassis fleet for IICL members con-sisted of 129,853 units. IICL membersare Flexi-Van Leasing Inc., Genstar,Textainer, Transamerica Leasing,Trans Ocean, CLOU, IntermodalEquipment Associates, Sea Con-tainers and Triton.

ILA LOCAL 1351 LAUNCHES EDUCATIONAlLocal 1351 of the International

Longshoremen’s Union, represen-ting steamship clerks and checkers,recently launched a comprehensiveeducational program for its mem-bers.

A board of education, with repre-sentatives of various segments of theindustry, was created to oversee theproject. The program includes a10-week, 38-hour class to informmembers of the local about importand export technology and docu-mentation, hazardous materials andsafety, timekeeping technology andother issues.ASSISTANCE Resources and materialsfor the program came from a varie-ty of sources. Government support-ers were the U.S. Customs Service,West Gulf Maritime Association(WGMA), U.S. Coast Guard and thePort of Houston Authority. Privatetransportation companies assisting
