In addressing the issue of thelimit inpostmodern culture, in the ambit of amedical conference, I would like to makereference to themyth of Prometheus, theTitan who had defied (hubris) the gods bystealing them fire and had donated it tomankind, and therefore was condemnedby Zeusto remain in chains forever tied toa rock and to be tortured by an eagle whoduring the day lacerated his liver thatgrew again every night.

But the divine vengeance hit also the whole human race.Zeus, in fact, operated insuch way that the beautifulPandora- married to theTitan Epimetheus, Prometheus'sbrother - unable to resist to curiosity, opened the jar whereEpimetheushadimprisoned all the ills of the world: the passions, fatigue, old age, insanity, disease, death. After opened the vase, these evils of men came out quickly spreadinganywhere in the world!

Every culture, every age, knows the prevalence of certain forms of disease thanothers, because of own customs, traditions and lifestyles, evidently even inrelation to the potential effectiveness of the diagnostic tools and of therapies, but it is surely crucial also the balance that the culture has with its own naturaland human environment; we think, for example, the air pollution and so on.

Publius Aelius Aristides, a famous rhetorician ofAsia Minor, in147 B.C. had agreed to the request of the emperorAntoninusPius, of which was friend, to go toRometo celebrate the ninthanniversary of the founding ofRomewith a famous oratoryspeech. In his SacredDiscourses, Aelius Aristides, tells of hisspeech. In his SacredDiscourses, Aelius Aristides, tells of hislong wanderings, during his return trip fromRome, from atemple of Asclepius to another, to heal a long illness, characterized by a group of disorders that now we callpsychosomatic, caused, probably, not only by obscure feelingsof guilt for having betrayed the “mother earth” praisingRomethat however had conqueredAsia Minorwith weapons, but alsoresulting from an unconscious nostalgia for his birthplacethathe, still young, had left for learning the oratory art and thepractice of rhetorician.

How many among the youngest can live today carefree and in high spirits, knowingthat even if they will study diligently and they will be highly trained in a trade or aprofession, for them it will still be extremely difficult tofind a job that is notprecarious, to have an own family, to rely on a pension that allows a serene oldness? How to face an uncertain future, namely no hope? This is the perspective thatWestern "civilization" offers to the younger generation? What characteristics make of post-modernity a so developedera from atechnological standpoint but that nevertheless fails to provide an equal psychologicalwell-being?

Prof. Daniele La Barberasays “many eminent essayists speak of thegreat and interesting problems of the post-modern epoch through aparticular style, that is without closing the discourse, leaving open theprospect, without giving a definitive solution, without providingcomplete answers, because this is the hallmark of the post-modern. Ifwe use this metaphor, this ability to read and to sense what is happeningin our society, we can understand many important aspects that are partof the post-modern atmosphere in which, we realize it or not, we are allimmersed”..

What La Barberasays about post-modernity can call in mind another mythologicalfigure, the Greek god Hermes, the god of boundaries, limits, milestones, thereforethe god of travelers, traders, brokers, but also the god of thieves, robbers, cheaters, tricksters (cardsharpers), because when the rules and confines are established thensomeone will tend always to encroach, to violate or go beyond.

As we can see,Hermes in the Greek culture isuseful to define and to confine memberships andidentities: on the one hand, the honest and decentpeople, on the other hand, thieves and fraudsters. But hehasalsothefunctionto marktheboundaries

Hermes leans But hehasalsothefunctionto marktheboundariesof the known and the experimented, because onlythen will we be able to go, metaphorically, beyondthe Pillars of Hercules; in this manner it isactivated theUlyssesthat is in every one of us.Finally, Hermes has the function of separatingwhat to man is allowed from what is impossible, namely what man should not dare because it canrepresent a challenge (hubris) to God's laws, see,for example, the genetic manipulation, and thisreminds us againPrometheus.

Does maintain the post-modernity this clear demarcation between cops and robbers, between the mafia and politics, between business banking and fraudulent financialinstitutions and, again, between masculine and feminine, between parental andamicable relationship, between elderly person and incorrigiblepuer, etc.. etc..?

Look carefully at many works of thecontemporary art. Do not it seem youthat they express the “Civilization andits Discontents”, the confusion betweenthe desire to exist as protagonist ofown individuation processand the darkfeeling of living in a sort ofdepersonalizing cultural magma?Don't you notice in these paintings, thesubtle fear of not being able todemarcate, under the rule ofInternetanddigitization, thevirtual world fromthereal world?Even the music anticipates anddescribes, through notes, the currentepochal changes and uncertainties. The discomfort of post-modernity canhave a precise name:dis-identity!

Our problem, typical of post-modernity, and which mainly affects younger people, isto have lost the strength of the individual psychological identity and of the culturalidentity. In a world flattened by globalization, the psychological identity is becomingincreasingly liquid, fragile, changeable!

by Catherine Gruzei2005

At individual level, in fact we have to do, more or less, with aborderline syndrometendency that is very pronounced in our time and that createsdeep problems with thehistorical continuity with ourselves: a difficulty to recognize ourselves in ourintimate and in our relations with the Other. A comings and goings of extremelyfleeting identifications with figures that appear and disappear within us that tell usevery time new caducous truths about ourselves!

More generally, we can say that our relationship with the material objects and therelational objects has become so difficult because we seek them eagerly when theyare away, and quickly we devalue them when we have achieved them and thiscompels us to search for strong sensations, increasingly strong, to compensate theeasy fall of their appeal and the existential void that this falling creates inside us.

by Anna Ceeh 2011

In some ways we live the reality that we are building with lesssense of security andcontentment, so that, having an origin obscure and unacknowledged, we complainincreasingly of our stress, and of the existential fatigue,or we lead our lives withfatalistic apathy or, worse, more and more we close in on ourselves.

It is no coincidence that today, in the psychic field, we see asignificant increase inpersonality disorders, primarily those from dis-identityas the borderlinesyndromes. It then strikes the impressive spread of diseases associated with loss, fear of separation, loosening of emotional ties: depressive syndromes, obsessive-phobic forms, panic attacks and, finally, the eating disorders.Next to these disorders, proliferates the frenzied search for substances that lendthemselves to being incorporated (drugs addiction) to fill in an illusory way theinner emptiness.

In recent years it has spread more and more theInternet Addiction Disorder(IAD ),which can reach levels as severe to bring the subject to be so much absorbed by theweb until to lose every contact with the real world.

The IAD knows several dependence variants: virtual sex encounter (cybersexaddiction), cyber-relational addiction(virtual relations),net gaming(pathologicalgambling online),information overloaded(cognitive overload because of too muchinformation), play station computer addiction, finally the dissociative trance bydisplay screenwith altered states of consciousness, possible psychic scission and thesurfacing of an alternative identity.

Finally, more or less pathological behaviors are increasing, sensation seekingtype -such as pathological gambling, extreme sports, bullying, sexual violence, thepartner swapping, pedophilia, exasperated the race to the god money through easyand immediate gains, and so on - as if only the sudden, intense, temporary (andineffective long-term) strong emotions were able to wake usfrom our listlessboredom. Lilith a Mesopotamian female demon associated with wind and storm, bearer of misfortune and death. In the Jewishculture Night she was considered a demon capable of bringing harm to male

children and was put in relation with the negative aspects of femininity such as adultery, witchcraft and lust. With the empowerment of women in the nineteenth century the figure of

Lilith was revalued becoming a symbol of female that is not subjected to male!

The reference toLilith is notcasual but it is useful to showhow with the passage of time, the symbolic figures acquirenew meanings, to mark thecultural transformations.cultural transformations.Today, for example, feminineand masculine have somedifficulties in establishingharmonious relations, asthough it were a powerstruggle, a kind of undeclaredwar between two opposingfactions.

In times contradictory and confusing as ours, some disorders express the individualdiscomfort to adapt to the cultural stereotypes. Thus, for example, while the massmedia, on the one hand, exalt skinny models and showgirls, onthe other hand, theyidolize shapely female figures that are sexually very attractive. Also for this reason, probably, the strong increase of anorexic patients, in which the prevailing concern isthat the body remains absolutely lean, purified in the firstplace by any alimentary“contamination”, devoid of any characteristic that could recall the sex appeal, pure asthat of a priestess: the “material body” must give way to the “spiritualized body”!

Diana and Athenaare two prototypes ofvirgo in which the libido (vital energy) andcorporeality (not sexual) have a strong presence: inDiana to protect the women, inAthens to fight the masculine. On the contrary, in theanorexic patients, energy isdestructively self-directed, with the unconscious aim to break all relations with ownearthly physicality, with own mother and with own potentialgenerativity!

We can now evoke another essential aspect ofHermes, the messenger: messengerbetween the gods and men, but also through communication with the human beinghimself.Since here it would take us far an examination of the psychoanalytic importance ofHermes(the wordhermeneuticscomes from him) in allowing to humans to grasp thehidden meanings in their unconscious, it is better to dwell on the spread ofHermesin the postmodern age that we can clearly define theera of communication.Internet, fixed and mobiletelephony, media, personalblogs, facebook, e-mail, SMS,and so on, have become pervasive. This communication is growing and dominantbut, at the same time, it is increasingly reduced to stereotypical jargon and, moreover, it happensat even greater physical distance between transceivingmoreover, it happensat even greater physical distance between transceivingindividuals, so making them often pathologicallyInternet addicted.

Since ourpsychological beinglives and has realization (even in its dimensionsoulandspirit) mainly through thephysical body (which is also a “relational” medium)we suffer the effects of a communication that is more and moreaway from thephysical reality of the personal meeting, namely more and more away from thereality (even emotional) of the lived body between people that are really present inthehere and nowof their vital field.

We discover that man, in thecivilization of the great global networkand of theextraordinary development of the media, is, paradoxically, increasingly alonebecausehecommunicatesmoreandmorein thevirtual world.becausehecommunicatesmoreandmorein thevirtual world.

The post-modern man is, in fact, more and more away from the agora (as a place ofexchange not only of goods and business but also of dialogical and dialecticalthinking, of tangible personal relationships and of feelings that are lived through theinter-individual reality of theemotional body), and, moreover, he has becameprogressively not-accustomed to that koinonia(joining union through the intimateparticipation) which, with a metaphorical expression, only the square, the place ofmeeting real, can allow.

And loneliness, we all know, makes us to feel bad! When the Other is humanlydistant, imaginary or only virtually present, or even when aprogressive humandesertification happens within us, then we tend to bend on ourselves, until to cancelthe Other, to live him as a foreigner and until to collapse into a circuit closed inwhich one becomes both subject and object, narrator and listener.

We call “alexithymia” the personality feature under which the individual has extremedifficulty to be experientially aware, to mentally elaborate and to verbally expressown emotions!

But we must consider that if a person is not able to mentally process his stress hecannot change his lifestyle. It is not uncommon that in thesecases a part of the body(an organ, a physiological system), if the accumulated tension is intense andprotracted over time, becomes the target (discharge point), developing at first afunctional alteration and, subsequently, developing a real somatic disease.

In writing, in 2001, theGreat Psychosomatic Ring, I also tried to underline that tospeak of psychosomatic illness is ultimately a mistake because, upon reflection, there is no illness, independently from the clinical evidences, which is not reallypsychosomatic, namely that does not concern, at the same time, soma, psyche andthe relationships of the subject. The distinction among these three aspects thatcharacterize the human being is just a convenient artifice because in reality they areas three faces of a same polyhedron.

Hermesis present deeply within us, within our bodies. Just think ofthe ecosystemof neurotransmission, to the messenger RNA, to the arterialtree, to the somato-visceral sensory-sensitive afferents and so on. The nervous system is the mediatorpar excellence between our bio-psychological individuality and the reality of theoutside world.

And then think the enormous exchange ofcommunications between the various systems thatmake part of the great functional unity called thePSYCHO-NEURO-ENDOCRINE-IMMUNE AXIS.

In our medical meetings we deepen carefully the understanding of somatic diseases:illnesses of organs, apparatuses, systems. Nephrology, cardiology, diabetology, gastroenterology, hematology, etc..., etc. And we describe in detail the pathologicalprocesses, tissue changes, symptoms, complications and the various diagnosticdetectors.

But something important is missing: the fundamental life history of thepatient, the significant events of his biography. We do not know, forinstance, in our meetings, if that illness arose after a bereavement, after along financial insolvency, after a marital separation or something else.

We know thepathogenic virus but

If the postmodern man is, as alsoRemo Ceserani(Raccontare il postmoderno,1997)says, an individual weakened, decentralized, multiplied, without a stable identity, nomad in the place, in crisis in his relationship with himself and with others and ifhis unexpressed discomfort affects also the body and its somatic illness is partly asymptom of his going forward with an increasingborderline uncertainty, we mustfind a way to understand and treat him more thoroughly and in aholistic form.

Giorgio De Chirico

Personally I see this possibility in the culture of thepluri-specialistic team, anetwork of doctors in which, each one maintaining own competence, utilizing“Hermes”, is intensified the scientific research side by side, the mutual exchange ofknowledge and the cooperation around the patient so that thesystematicteamreunionis the main moment.
