MY SEMINAR AT UKIAH

The city of Ukiah California has its own lilacsparkplug in the person of 85 year young Mrs. LeilaRomer. Through the years she has been instrumental inpromoting lilacs in this beautiful N.California city, finally convinced me to go up there to present aseminar on lilacs. Tita and I flew up to San Franciscoon March 20, 1984 where we were picked up at the air-port by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Manning, had lunch atFishermans Wharf then headed for Ukiah, passing throughwine country and arriving in time for dinner at Ukiah'sfinest restaurant. The following morning after break-fast we headed for Garden House, to set up for thelecture. The seminar started at 1 p.m. with the mayor,Chamber president, Ukiah officials, faculty andstudents of the university, members of the Ukiah andsurrounding cities' Garden Clubs and the press inattendance. The seminar consisted of a talk for twohours, an hour of slides followed by a question andanswer period. One can always recognize the interestgenerated by listening to the question and answerperiod.

Mrs. Romer's daughter and son-in-law Mr. and Mrs.John Parducci invited us to a sumptuous dinner at theirhome, adjacent to their vineyard and winery. Thefollowing morning we were picked up by Mrs. Vivian Finnethe program chairman, taken on a tour of the variouslilac gardens-M.rs. Romer's, Mannings I, stipps' etc.then to dinner at the Stamp Club (my second hobby). Wespent the night at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs.Lloyd Osborne who returned us to the San Francisco air-port the following morning.

The trip was well worth the time and effort.Because it is so difficult to return to the same areathe course on lilacs had to be condensed and the materialreduced to em outline so that roost of the groundcovered would be included in the time alloted. The

WHO WAS CHARLES JOLY?

By Robert B. Clark, Neredith NH

Lemoine's double reddish lilac 'Charles Joly'continues to be offered by nurserymen and planted byhome owners and gardeners eighty-eight years after itsintroduction. Has the lilac outlived the reputation ofthe man for whom it commemorates? Two or three yearsago I was bold enough to ask" "who was Charles Joly?"Today I am happy to report a tidbit about his life andfame. For this information I am indebted to my latefriend Bernard Harkness, second president of our Society, who left these notes in the Lilac Society's archives.

Charles Joly was born at Nancy in 1818. He tookhis degree in medicine which he practiced in the UnitedStates. Upon his return to France he operated the hotel"DuBois de Boulogne" which he surrounded with ornateflower borders. His interest in horticulture includedmembership in horticultural societies and he was electedhonorary vice-president of the National HorticulturalSociety of France. Additionally he was lnterested inheating systems and one of his devices was marketedunder his name. This information is taken from hisobituary notice published in Revue Horticole,September 1, 1902. ---

,Herewith Bernie's remarks: "So versatile andenergetic a Nancy native quite fittingly has had hisname made well known by the 1896 introduction of theLemoine Nursery. It is one of the best knowncommercially of the double reddish purple varieties."

HIGHLAND PARK LILAC COLLECTION

The complete name of the collection is MonroeCounty Parks Arboretum-Highland Park Lilac Collection. It is administered from the Monroe County ParksDepartment offices located at 375 Westfall Road,Rochester, New Yo rk , 14620.

John Dunbar,a young Scottish Horticulturist, started the Highland Park Lilac collection in 1892 witha small planting of lilacs in a corner of Highland Park.In 1898, suprised Rochester officials estimated thatover 3,000 visitors were attracted to the blooms. Thiswas a real tribute to the lilacs as no announcement hadheralded the display. With an enthusiatic communitybehind him, Mr. Dunbar and his successors increasedthe lilac collection to its present size covering 22acres. The collection includes many of the varietiesdating back to colonial origins, as well as the mostrecent introductions. The tradition of their popularityhas grown spontaneously and is demonstrated vividly eachyear at Lilac Time in Rochester, when thousands ofvisitors from all sections of the United States andCanada come to view the collection with approximately450 lilac (taxa) varieties, displayed by more than1600 shrubs.

The collection is open to public from dawn to dark.Majority of lilacs will bloom between May l5 and June1st. You may check on state of bloom by phoning(716) 244-4640 or write for further informationto:

Robert E. Hoepfl, Superintendent of Horticultureor to James W. Kelly, Taxonomist, at the address

indicated above.

Title: Propagation of Lilacs at McKay Nursery ~Bernard Fourrier

Questions and Answers part. Page 37Question =

If an application of a bound fertilizer was madejust a couple of weeks before the cuttings were taken, would that stimulate rooting?Answer == Corrected

I do not think so. If you fertilize just a coupleof weeks prior to taking cuttings, there is a lot ofnitrogen which will not be assimilated. Nitrogenfertilizer affects the utilization of carbohydrates inplants. When nitrogen fertilizers Clre supplied in largeamount, the level of carbohydrates will decrease. Sincecarbohydrates influence root initiation (from research)a low level of nitrogen and high of carbohydrates willfavour rooting.

Our note: Thank you Bernard for bringing the inadvertenterror to our attention, especially to those in theworld of lilac propagation. '
