HISTORY OF CENTRE COLLEGE
Centre College was chartered by the Kentucky Legislature on January I, 1819. Old Centre built in 1820 is perhaps the oldest college building east of the Alleghenies. Because of its religious and public affiliations, Centre's history has been intertwined with that of other schools throughout its existence. From 1833 to 1857, Centre had a medical school as well as providing instruction in the classics. The Danville Theological Seminary begun in 1853 was on the Centre campus until 1901. Breckenridge Hall built in 1892 served as a dormitory for this school. In 1873, the southern Presbyterians decided that the post civil was philosophy of the national Presbyterian Church was unsuitable. They formed their own institution of higher learning at Richmond, Kentucky with schools of law, medicine, and denistry. After the turn of the century, the rift healed sufficiently for Centre and Central University to merge once again.
Higher education for women began in Danville in 1854 with the Henderson Female Institute. In 1855, the school changed its name to the Caldwell Female Institute. In the latter part of the 19th century, it was associated with the Danville Female Academy and the Bell Seminary. In 1904, the school became known as Caldwell College only to change again to become Kentucky College for Women in 1913. the first four-year graduates were in 1925. Kentucky College for Women merged with Centre College as the women's department in 1926. The women's campus was united with the men's campus under the single name of Centre College in 1962.

Kentucky,
19i History continued:
and built a frame house which came to be known as Methodist Tavern be cause so many ministers stopped there. It was also on Benjamin Durham's land that the log church known as Durham's Chapel was built. Camp meetings were held there beginning in 1825. Francis Clark settled near Danville on Quirk's Run.
In 1788, the Kentucky circuit was divided into the Lexington and Dan ville circiuts. Wilson Lee was appointed to the Danville circiut which was comprised of one third of the state.
In 1789i A log church was built on the present site of Centenary Church. It was called Centennial Memorial. The only Methodist about whom there is any record was Willis Green. He was a Revolutionary War soldier from the Shenandoah Valley who came to Danville to locate land warrants. He sat in two of the Danville conventions and was an original trustee of Transylvania. He was one of the chief promoters of Bethel Academy and a member of the Political Club. Bishop Asbury stayed with Green on his trip to Kentucky in 1792.
It was not until 1823, that the Danville Methodist Group had any real or ganization. Mrs. Joan Fleece asked the circiut rider to preach in the market place. The courthouse was used as a meeting place. The group bought a lot on Walnut Street in 1835 including the former post office which was used as a parsonage.
In l8*f5» there was a division within the church and the Centenary Church became the South Church with the "North" Church being"built on Broadway. In 1889? the new church on the corner of Third and Walnut was built 100 years after the founding of Methodism in the area by Clark & Durham.
The church addition was completed in 1930. Its construction was super vised by A.W. Walker.
