Burren Atlantic DriveFull day itinerary
Voted one of the top ten drives in the world, this coastal route with the Atlantic Ocean on one side
and the Burren Limestone rising up on the other, is both dramatic and enchanting. This drive includes some of the most historic monuments of the Burren and the breath-taking Cliffs of Moher.
Starting in Bally-vaughan follow the N67 (Lisdoonvarna Rd) for 1km and go left on the R480 (Kilfenora Rd). Aillwee Cave is 2km on the left. Cahermore Fort on the right. Continue on the R480 for 6km to Poulnabrone Dolmen on the left and then
1/2km to Caherconnell Stone Fort on the right. Approx 2.5km on the left you find Carron Church. From here travel 4km to Lemenagh Castle where you go right on the R476to Kilfenora. Here you will find the Burren Centre providing information on all aspects of the Burren.
Now take the R476 to Lisdoonvarna 7.5km Turn right at the bridge, go up the main street, turn left at the square and 200m on the left you will find the Burren Smoke House, famous for its smoked salmon. Follow the N67 for 2km and turn right at the junction onto the R478 Follow this route for approx 11.5km to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher.
Return to Lisdoonvarna on the R478. Take the R477 coastal road to Fanore and Ballyvaughan. Here you can enjoy the beau-tiful views of the Aran Islands and the famous Limestone karst pavements of the Burren. Drive through the Village of Fanore which has an E.U blue flag beach, famous for surfing and beach angling. Follow the road, stopping to enjoy the breath taking views around Black Head, with its little lighthouse below the level of the road, then continue past Gleninagh Castle, a sixteenth-century tower house, and pier and back to the village of Ballyvaughan, a picturesque fishing port overlooking Galway Bay.
Archaeological trail
Half day itinerary
About one mile from Ballyvaughan on the Corkscrew Hill road (N67), turn left for Corofin (R480). Less than 1.5 km
on this road on the right beyond the turning for Aillwee cave is Ballyallaban Ringfort with its earthen bank. A few hundred metres further on is the remains of Cahermore, a stone fort. A little further on the left is Gleninsheen, a wedge shaped gallery grave. This townland is also known from the Irish Bronze age Gold Collar, found in a crevice by a boy hunting rabbits, in 1934. This collar is now part of the National Museum collection.
A little further on also on the left is the famous Poulnabrone Dolmen, a portal grave dating to between 3800 B.C. –3000 B.C. Continue a short distance to Caherconnell stone fort with Interpretive Centre and Tea Rooms. Turn right at the next crossroads, take the left at the Y junction, on your left is the cist grave cairn of Poulawack. You may continue on this little road to Noughaval and visit the very interesting old Chapel and graveyard. Take the next right turn and a few kilometres along this road is Cahermacnaughten. This Cashel served as a Brehon Law School until the 17th century. Continue on to the T Junction and turn right for Ballyvaughan.

ACTIVITIES Ballyvaughan Wood Loop
The first section of the loop follows part of the long-
distance Burren Way, climbing up towards Aillwee Cave takes you along the side of Aillwee Mountain and back down to the seaside village Ballyvaughan.
A - B. Start from the trailhead directly opposite the entrance to the road which takes you past the primary school, which is also part of the Burren Way. Follow the various purplearrows across a series of stone stiles and wooden sections to exit into a field which takes you on to a surfaced roadway where the loop turns left and leaves the Burren way, which turns right.
B - C. Follow the surfaced roadway for approximately 300m to reach the N67 - turn left, and almost immediately, turn right again onto a minor road. Follow this road to its conclusion at a metal gate into a field. Cross the stile and follow the purple arrows across the fields, and through a path cut through a wooden area, and sandy roadways to exit close to the entrance to Aillwee Cave where you turn left.
C - D. Now follow the roadway for approximately 2km to reach a T-junction where you turn left. Pass through a gateway and join a green road. Follow this green road for approximately 300m to exit at a double gate. Continue straight as the green roadway changes to a surfaced roadway and eventually reaches a T-junstion where you turn left to a minor surfaced road.
D - A. After approximately 400m on this surfaced road you join the N67 Galway road where you turn left for the last trek back through the village of Ballyvaghan to the trailhead.
