Light Cure Adhesive Technology
Issue 1
2
Introduction
The entire Spectrum of Innovative Solutions
Ever since the commercialisation of ultraviolet light curing products over three decades ago, Henkel has remained at the forefront of the development of light curing adhesives, sealants and coatings for industrial applications ranging from glass assemblies to plastic bonding and medical device manufacturing. Adhesives that cure quickly on exposure to light have swept across the industrial spectrum, gaining widespread acceptance because of their compelling process cost reduction benefi ts and wide range of properties.
Originally, light cure adhesives were formulated to be cured with ultraviolet (UV) light sources, followed by UV/visible light curing systems. The latest generation of light cure adhesives offered by Henkel relies solely upon the visible light spectrum to deliver safe, effi cient, immediate cure for a broad range of assembly applications.

Loctite® INDIGO™ Light Cure Adhesives
This revolutionary technology can rely solely on low energy light in the visible spectrum to deliver all of the benefi ts of traditional light curing. It is ideal for a wide range of applications and exceeds both industry and environmental sustainable standards – ensuring a safer working environment, eliminating venting, reducing unnecessary energy usage, and saving money through less replacement, maintenance, repair, and capital investment costs. The products are designed for use on UV-blocking clear and selected coloured substrates including translucent variations of blue, purple, grey, white and green.
Loctite® Light Cure Adhesive Technologies
Light curing • acrylics, offering the most extensive variety of properties of all light cure chemistries. A transparency equal to glass and clear plastics, as well as versatile adhesion characteristics are their most notable propertiesLight curing • silicones, which cure into soft, fl exible thermoset elastomers and are excellent for elastic bonding, sealing and leakproofi ngLight curing • cyanoacrylates, offering outstanding plastic bonding capabilities combined with rapid cure by low intensity light irradiationLight curing • anaerobics with excellent metal bonding capabilities and outstanding chemical resistance combined with shadow cure
Loctite® Light Cure Solutions with Shadow Cure
Dual cure capability, effected by heat or activator, as moisture or anaerobic cure, can also be provided to cure adhesives in shadowed areas. Dual cure expands the benefi ts of light cure technology to non-transparent substrates, other adhesive technologies and application areas.

Light Cure Adhesives for Glass
Light cure adhesives offer clear advantages for glass applications and have been the preferred option for many years.
They achieve high transparency and show excellent stability even after long term ageing in hostile • environmental conditions including moisture, sunlight and dishwashers
Their refractive index matches that of fl oat glass, creating a virtually invisible bond line•
They create high strength bonds on all types of glass including fl oat glass, crystal glass, fi bre glass and • ceramic glass. They are particularly effective when bonding metal to glass
The product range goes all the way from high strength grades for structural bonds to highly fl exible types • for stress absorption within the bond line
They greatly improve the ease of assembly and range of design options, eliminating the need for • drilling holes, or for mechanical fasteners to avoid stress peaks, and achieve a clean, modern design with perfect cosmetic appearance

Light Cure Adhesives for Plastics
Plastic bonding adhesives can be cured by UV and visible light and achieve low stress, ultra clear bonds, making them particularly suitable for bonding modern plastics.
Bonding and sealing of housing assemblies, lids, shells, windows into frames, sunglasses … •Display cases and shelves, point of sale material … •Medical device industry – needles, housings, adapters, connectors … •
Transparency equal to the plastic substrate obtains invisible bond lines• Temperature resistance and deformation behaviour match that of plastics, providing • for a high degree of long-term durabilityCapable of bonding transparent plastics, e.g. PC, acrylic, PBT, PVC and plasticised PVC, • most opaque plastics, e.g. PA, as well as most non-transparent or coloured plasticsVarious light cure technologies for adaptation to the wavelengths passing through clear • or UV-stabilised or translucent pigmented plastics

Light Cure Adhesives for Non Transparent Substrates
A large number of substrates are not transparent to light at all because they are made of a material that does not allow light to transmit (e.g. metals, ceramics, ferrites), or because they contain a non transparent additive (e.g. black, colour additives).
The versatility of light curable adhesives for use in bonding and tacking, potting and encapsulating, coating and sealing applications is further enhanced by products which have a secondary cure mechanism to ensure residual or complete cure in shadowed areas not reached by UV or visible light. For such joint confi gurations, light cure adhesives are available with secondary cure capability. This secondary curing options include heat, moisture, activator or as anaerobic cure.
Light cure adhesives offer benefi ts even when non transparent substrates are involved:
Precise positional fi xturing of parts to be bonded• Fast cure for high processing speeds and in-line quality control capability• Reliable cure of exposed excess adhesive fi llets or squeeze-out• Cure in shadowed areas over time by secondary cure•
11
Wherever fast cure of adhesive in fi llets accessible by light offers a process benefi t, e.g. for Fast fi xturing of magnets, ferrites, ceramic parts … • Fast positioning of parts in retaining joints …• Fillet or surface cure, e.g. of post-applied product outside the bond area …•

Four major factors must be taken into consideration when designing a successful light cure application: emission spectrum
of the cure system, light intensity, transmission properties of substrate, and the required cure characteristics. As a
manufacturer of both the chemistry and the curing equipment, Henkel knows how to match light cure adhesives to the
correct dispensing and curing system.
