The WellWhat are residents saying about TRX?

“The TRX equipment provides an opportunity to focus on specific areas of our body or to do a complete body workout. We use the TRX to supplement our exercise routine by focusing on our knees (can be used even for those who have had knee replacements), back, upper arms and shoulders. The TRX straps are appropriate for anyone regardless of their strength by simply moving their body and/or feet. EASY AND FUN!”

– Hank and Nina Coyle

“I was so excited to see the new TRX equipment in the Renewal Fitness Center. I can’t wait to spice up my strength training workout with the TRX. I’m coming for training, Kyra!”

– Mary Ann Watrous

“I found it interesting to learn that the TRX can be used to work all the important muscles – particularly the core muscles. And it’s easy to adjust the resistance simply by the positioning of the feet.”

– Howard Watrous

Winter Fun in the Fitness CenterInterested in playing Ping Pong? We have a fun group that meets on Tuesday mornings at 8 a.m. If that is too early for you but you are interested in playing, please reach out to Kyra. If enough people are interested, we could add an afternoon class.

One of the top ways to keep your brain sharp is exercise, but socialization also helps. The Brain Power class on Tuesdays at 11:15 a.m. provides an opportunity to think creatively and learn new things with friends.

Walk and Talk on Thursdays at 11:15 a.m. can be done inside during the chilly months. Our next fitness challenge (March) will include 75 minutes of cardio-type exercise each week, which is half of the recommended 150 minutes per week. There will be more detail about the next fitness challenge in a future newsletter but starting or keeping the exercise habit now is important. Kyra will be speaking about the Walking Habit at MCC on Thursday, January 23 from 1:15-2:15 p.m. They have a wonderful indoor track at MCC!

Sheryl Baumann, our dietitian here at the Village, will be leading the Healthy Habits group on Friday, January 17 at 10:30 a.m. She will be discussing nutrition labels and how to make sense out of them. Please let Kyra know if you’d like to attend that day, even if you aren’t currently part of this group.

Spring Flower SaleBy Don and Trudy Fruechtemeyer

Think Spring! Think Spring! Think Spring!

Even though your Christmas decorations are still up and you’re getting ready to sing “Auld Lang Syne,” it’s time to start thinking about spring. When you think of spring, your mind should automatically think of the annual Christian Village at Mason Spring Flower Sale sponsored by the Auxiliary.

Oxford Greenhouse will again be supplying our flowers. We were very impressed with the quality of plants they provided in 2019. We coordinated with them to assure the plants listed on the pre-order form would be available in the spring. In order to guarantee complete delivery, we need to have your order submitted by February 27, 2020.

So, the pre-order forms are enclosed in your January copy of The Village News. Remember, the deadline for submitting your pre-orders is Thursday, February 27. Don and Trudy Fruechtemeyer are the co-chairpersons for the 2020 Spring Flower Sale and are asking you to contact your friends and families to offer them a chance to purchase their spring flower needs. Extra pre-order forms will be available at the Front Desk.

Remember… THINK SPRING… AND THINK FLOWERS!

For those of you that have paid your dues for 2020, we say thank you! You can pay your dues at the Front Desk. Blank applications are also available at the Front Desk. Remember, dues are $3 for a single membership or $5 for a couple.

CVM Veterans AssociationBy Bob Moorehead

The CVM Veterans Association will next meet on Thursday, January 16 at 10 a.m. in the Chapel. Our program speaker will be Col. Judy Pearson, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), Foundation Ambassador – Ohio, for The Women in Military Service For America Memorial Foundation. This group is dedicated to honor, educate and empower, and remember women in the military. She will explain the organization’s purpose and projects currently underway to promote their Foundation.

We will also have our annual election of officers for CVM Vets.

Nominees are: Commander-Dave Doty, First Vice CO-Jerry Kohls, 2nd Vice CO-Bob Moorehead, Adjutant-Chuck Abbott, Finance Officer-Chuck Zindel.

All residents and guests are invited, so please mark your schedules to include the Veterans meeting in January.

CVM Christmas FundThe Christmas Fund Committee 2019 wants everyone to know how grateful we all are for the continuing support for this project. This comes from our residents, employees, families and friends of the fund this year. Many, many thanks.

We also know our spokesperson, Frosty, has made it back North after surviving our unusually warm weather days in October and November this year! He adds his THANKS TO ALL for another awesome job on behalf of the CVM Christmas Fund.

Results of the GH Residents Association SurveyThanks to every Garden Home resident who completed the recent survey on the Residents’ Association (RA). The gist of the 108 surveys submitted is that:

• 33% of respondents indicated they attend the RA meetings.

• 59% believe the RA meetings should continue.

• 67% agree that quarterly RA meetings is sufficient.

Comments suggest that informational presentations by Eric Hansen, City Manager of Mason, and Jon Cooper, Superintendent of Mason Public Schools are of particular interest and complement Larry Monroe’s Town Hall meetings on affairs at CVM.

People also enjoy the High School Choir presentations and find the local election forums helpful (we missed them for 2019). However, very few volunteered to help lead the Residents Association. We are looking into ways to continue the quarterly meetings.

Thanks again, and God bless you all, especially in this season of celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

A Story About Four Friends“Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody.”

There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blames Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.

Let’s take the responsibility to do good today so tomorrow can be better.

“The Black Sox Scandal”Guest Speaker: Historian, Greg Hand

Cal Crim was Cincinnati’s super-cop – part Batman, part Sherlock Holmes. He was so popular that, when he was wounded, the citizens of Cincinnati chipped in to pay off his mortgage. Crim collared the murderers of poor Pearl Bryan and the Turkey King of Winchester, Kentucky. It was Crim who unraveled the plot behind the 1919 Black Sox scandal, among the most notorious events in sports history. One hundred years ago, the Cincinnati Reds’ victory in the 1919 World Series was tarnished when it was revealed that several opponent White Sox collaborated with gamblers to throw the series. Or did they? Cal Crim was called in to investigate.

Happy New Year One and All!Well, ready or not, here we go into another New Year. I’m beginning to lose count. I’m not so sure if we celebrate the arrival of the New Year or survival of the Old Year! Call me crazy but “dropping the ball” does not sound like a good way to start off a New Year. The Bengals did it all season and see what it got them.

I found that the most important item for a New Year’s Eve party was noise makers ― to wake you up at midnight. My goal for 2019 was to lose 10 pounds. I have only 14 to go. Sally Forth at the Village will notarize your 2020 New Year’s Resolutions. I’m sure yours are like mine, they go in one year and out the other.

I did get a 2020 calendar and I think the calendar days are numbered. I finally realized that younger people are prisoners of their own phones…that’s why they are called “cell” phones. When I hear their problems, I like to tell them the story about the time I survived without my cell phone or the internet for over 85 years. I’m so old that I can remember when the only bad thing on TV was the reception.

So I wouldn’t forget Joanne’s birthday or our anniversary, I set up with the local florist last year to automatically send her flowers on those dates. All went fine until I came home and said: “What pretty flowers. Where did they come from?”

When asked “What did you do New Year’s Eve?” I squinted and asked, “Why, what did you hear?” I guess we didn’t realize we were making memories during 2019. We just thought we were having fun.

I wish you all a happy and healthy new year. May our troubles in the coming year be as short-lived as our resolutions.
