Wonderful! Our annual Donor Recognition issue always points me to a deeper appreciation of our many partners and our shared values that are the life blood of our work and mission. There are hundreds and hundreds of names here! Names of people, churches and organizations that made generous financial contributions in support of our mission in 2010.

My 20-plus years of experience in ministry tell me that giving draws upon a blessed blend in a person: courage, kindness, faith, generosity, love, compassion, to name a few. For me, these qualities jump off the pages of this issue with each donor’s name. This issue is for you. Each story, each smile, each life changed is because of you. Thank you for being YOU – you are wonderful!

From the Cover: Project: Back-To-School with Crosslines and Ambassadors for Children

This year, 55 public schools in Greene County are requesting help from Crosslines to provide back-to-school supplies for students in need. It is startling that more than half of all students in Springfield Public Schools are eligible for the free or reduced lunch program. With your generous help, school supplies are discretely provided by Crosslines to students in need. New clothing, new shoes, and haircuts for foster children returning to school are all provided through Ambassadors for Children and the Kids Clothes Closet. Project: Back-To-School supports some very special children whose hidden potential only needs a nudge to be realized.

Thanks again for being courageous and kind, faithful and generous, loving and compassionate. You really are wonderful!

The Matthew Circle of Giving Lifetime Cumulative Giving of those donors making a gift to

the Council of Churches and its service agencies January 1 - December 31, 2010

The Matthew Circle of Giving includes the names of all individuals, churches, businesses, estates and foundations that made gifts during the calendar year 2010. Giving levels include all gifts made over the donor’s lifetime.* Our member churches are listed in blue.

The Matthew Circle of Giving is based on the words of Jesus in Matthew 25:35-40 …“… for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me … Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Comfort for Kids In JoplinIn the aftermath of the devastation from the tornado in Joplin, we discovered a need to help children cope with the stress and losses due to the storm. Child Care Aware® of Southern Missouri and Ambassadors for Children, two agencies of the Council of Churches of the Ozarks, focus on social-emotional health and development of children and reaching out with a mission to serve children. From this mission, the Comfort for Kids Care Kits were created.

Each kit contains ten items to help children cope and provides information for parents, guardians or childcare providers on ideas to use the kit. Within two weeks, we were blessed with volunteers to help, financial donations and businesses ready to provide assistance. Through prayer, determination

and the generosity of the community, we distributed 5,373 kits in one day. Kits were distributed to 25 child care facilities including family home providers, centers, church based facilities, Head Start and the Joplin YMCA.

We are planning a second mission to complete an additional 5,000 kits to distribute in late September. A partnership has been developed with the Ozark Center, a subsidiary of Freeman Health System , who has taken on the day-to-day efforts for helping children cope with the trauma. The Child Trauma Center includes a partnership with six organizations and agencies in Southwest Missouri also including St. John’s Mercy Medical Center, the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Joplin Public Schools, the Children’s Center of Southwest Missouri, and the Missouri Institute of Mental Health (according to the Joplin Tri-State Business Journal).

We at the Council of Churches of the Ozarks would like to give a heart-felt thank you to everyone that helped. Without you, we could not have completed this project. Bless you for the outpouring of kindness !

Kids Helping Kids – Mannon’s StoryMannon wanted to do a something for the children of Joplin. So, for her 9th birthday, Mannon requested that instead of gifts for her celebration, that her friends and family bring donations for the Comfort for Kids Care Kits. She has donated $400 for the kits!

Adopt-a-Caseworker – Small Steps, Big Changes!

A biological dad that just received his two young children back into his home after they had been in foster care found himself worrying about not having a vehicle. He needed to be able to get to the grocery store with his children and get the groceries home safely. One of the Adopt-a-Caseworker partner groups with Ambassadors for Children purchased a garden wagon for him. Now he can safely transport his children and the groceries! This family is so grateful and excited! This gift and gifts like it help parents to experience hope that they can be successful.

Inspired to ShopThe RSVP program, which has a Homebound Shopper program to help the elderly that are homebound, received a letter from Mr. Crankshaw. His mother, who was 102, had Patricia as her volunteer Homebound Shopper. He was so inspired by the help received from the volunteer, Mr. Crankshaw now volunteers his time as a Homebound Shopper and volunteers his time to shop for another gentleman.

Dear Ms. Bullock,

Your Patricia and RSVP have my sincere thanks for the real aid you all provided. I will call Patricia today, thanking her by telephone.

Sincerely, Bob Crankshaw

“I love… I love… I love…”The Howards use adult day services to provide excellent care while they work and to have their daughter, Amanda, interact with people, activities and crafts that they cannot always provide.

Kathleen says, “Daybreak provides a safe and inviting environment for our daughter, Amanda. The interaction (people, games, activities, excursions, etc.) allows us the personal security and yet full freedom to allow Amanda to stay

all day. The medical staff is fully capable of anything I ask. The other staff gives above and beyond the duties of the Day Care Provider. It’s more like the Day Care Family.”

Amanda says, “I love the people. I love the food. I love the activities and the crafts. I love it and I need it.”

Touching Lives Like

Never BeforeCrosslines recently changed to a Client Choice food pantry. This new change has resulted in more relationships with the church volunteers and clients. One volunteer recently shared a story:

As she was walking with a client to choose food from the shelves, the client shared with her that her mother was very ill, causing her great distress. The client asked the volunteer if her pastor would come and visit her and her family. The volunteer was touched, as she felt interaction like this would never have happened with the prior mode of distribution at Crosslines.

“One Day She Will Walk”Our girl Emma is 5 years old and

is diagnosed with Rett syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects the way the brain and body develop and function. From a very young age, it was evident Emma was delayed. Despite all of her hard work and a talented team of therapists, as she grew older the delays became more profound. Emma was not able to stand independently, walk or talk, and had limited purposeful use of her hands.Emma has participated in multiple

therapies throughout the past few years. She has been able to maintain skills and make progress - slow but steady. Then in September she started equine therapy with TRO. This gave just the boost we had hoped for. Since starting equine therapy we have seen a dramatic increase in Emma’s motivation and ability to stand. Just this past weekend we had family pictures, and for the fist time, Emma is standing in the pictures! She is so proud - you can see it in her smile. When Emma is riding the horse she is

having such a good time, she doesn’t realize how much her body is benefiting, but the results are clear. We are so excited about her progress and know that one day she will walk. With sincerest thanks and

appreciation for all the support that makes this program possible.

The Follis Family
