Jacob Sullivan and I took four teen boys on a men’s canoe trip August 23-26.
We took these young men to 3 different camp sites in the Kawartha Highlands
Park via Canoeing and portaging. During the trip we slept in hammocks with
nets, read the four Passion Narratives from the Bible, Prayed, worshiped God
in song and listened to talks on the 4 Marks of a Christian Man. Exploring that
being a man isn’t about a rite of passage as much as it is about Embracing
Responsibility, Striving for Competence, Having Integrity of Character, Loving
others and (Bonus) Being Defiant when it comes to resisting the culture on
what it says it is to be a man. Each camper had a duty assigned throughout the
weekend, whether it was cooking, doing dishes, getting firewood or getting
the fire ready. It was a tiring but awesome trip, with many laughs and sore
arms. Fr. Jerry also joined us Sunday evening to celebrate Mass on the back of
a canoe for us! Just like St. John Paul II did as a young priest. It was a beautiful
experience to have Mass in that way and on such a lovely day. Everyone is
looking forward to next year. Stay tuned for next summer’s men’s canoe trip.
Reflections Old-Timerof an
In the spring of 1962, Harvey and I moved into our first and only house in Kawartha Heights.
Father McSherry referred to that area as the “Twilight Zone.” There was no transportation to St. Alphonsus school so some of us, led by Fern Doyle, provided catechism classes in the church after the eleven o’clock Mass. Thus began our faith journey in St. Alphonsus Parish. As our family grew in number, so did our parish involvement.
From the very beginning, “Hospitality and Celebration” became the descriptive trademarks of our parish. Faith, fun and friendship were the enticements that called forth inquiry and involvement.
Who can forget?• The picnics at Beavermead with games and Frank
Mancini on the piano?• Sunday night ball games with Church League Old-
timers – our 3 teams – Doves, Cherubs, Angels?• The floor in the Hall bouncing to the beat as we
danced our cares away into the wee hours?• The echo of hammers and the swish of paint
brushes as volunteers, young and old, changed the face of our rectory?
• The “bingo” shouts of winners and Rosie selling “booster” tickets with the many volunteers who raised money to pay down the debt?
Our faith and our call to love and serve one another was always the core of our parish. We celebrated our feast days with exuberance and dignity always searching for a deeper relationship with our God. Our church was filled to capacity as we praised God for His unconditional love and forgiveness in the sacrament of Reconciliation. On Pentecost Sunday the whole parish gathered at St. Peter’s High School gym in a sea of red and white to acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit. There we
honoured and pledged support for the confirmands, the newly baptized (RCIA) and all who celebrated First Eucharist and Reconcilation. Holy Humour Sunday was an unforgettable experience initiated by Father Leo to feel the joy of the early Christians as they celebrated the Resurrection of Jesus. Exuberant joy and laughter filled the church as we gathered to acknowledge God’s marvellous sense of humour. The 9 o’clock choir added so much to set the tone yet always respected the solemnity and dignity of the liturgy.
We were constantly challenged to deepen our faith by questioning, reading, searching, praying…Retreats, Forty Hour Devotions, Perpetual Help devotions, small group discussions, bible studies with Doug Finbow, evenings at the feet of Sister Virginia, at Emmaus House, unforgettable homilies, and many more opportunities were golden moments on our faith journeys. The wonderful work of the C.W.L., the Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent de Paul and Out of the Cold must be acknowledged as well. There are countless opportunities to “love and serve” one another.
We, the old timers of this wonderful parish are not finished yet but I challenge every parishioner to take up our challenge to you. Get involved and activate your God-given gifts. Visit those of us in senior’s residences or care facilities. Take Eucharist to the home-bound. Teach our children-our future. Feed the less fortunate. Enhance our Sunday Masses. Welcome new parishioners. These are only a few of the opportunities I suggest as I hand the torch of today and tomorrow on to you. Welcome the people who celebrate with us “for the first time in a long time” but reach out to all the old timers who established and sustained this faith community of St. Alphonsus Liguori. Pray for us and for those who have gone before us as you continue to preserve our spirit of “Hospitality and Celebration”.

At Saint Alphonsus Liguori, our Sacrament Prep program is a faith journey for parents and children (grade 2 + for Reconciliation/Communion and grade 7+ for Confirmation) to take together. As you follow your intake’s sessions and materials, we encourage you to attend Mass weekly as a family, as this can foster a connection to the parish that will soon bestow the sacraments on your child, and familiarity can help the child and your family to feel at home on the day of that momentous occasion.
For more information, schedules, and to register, visit stalphonsus.net and click the ‘Sacraments’ button.
Kids’ Ministry Tiny Disciples is a beautiful drop-off program style ministry that offer the youngest members of our parish (ages 2-5) an opportunity to get to know God in a safe and fun environment. Parents come before Mass begins, sign their child in, and enjoy the Mass as their children enjoy a faith-filled program. Pick them up right after Mass! Offered Sundays at 9am and 11am.
Kids Church is a great children’s liturgy style ministry that offers younger parishioners (grades 1-5) an opportunity to experience the Mass in a
dynamic, engaging way. Just follow your friendly volunteer with the glow stick when they call for you at Mass! Offered Sundays at 9am and 11am.
