Happy New Year to allEditor's Notes

At the recent Phil-Ex show in Toronto I talked to theeditor of Canadian Stamp News mentioning that theirpaper very seldom has any articles about Canadianpostal stationery and I was told by Virginia that it is alack of getting someone to contribute. So if anyone would be willing to write an article aboutCanadian postal stationery once a month in CanadianStamp News, please let their editor Virginia St-Denisknow about it.I think it would be a great benefit to our hobby, if morepeople read about our interesting collecting field.

Membership listIn this issue we bring an updated membership list. The last time it was done was in April 1996 and man}'changes since than warrant an updated version.

Again in this issue we resume the listing by JohnGrace of the Canadian Express Company cards with adifferent front and back. please let him know about anycorrections, additions or new items.

ENVELOPESOn December 28, 2000 the new 47 cent envelopes size#8 and size #10 were issued. They were releasedtogether with new postage stamps for the postal rateincrease in January 1, 2001.The Lapland longspur design appears on the #8envelope and is priced at 50 cents (plus tax) while thegolden eagle graces the #10 envelope priced at 51cents (plus tax). Both designs showcase acrylicpaintings by artist Pierre Leduc of Stoneham, Quebec. The envelope format is the same, side seams andsquare flap with rounded corners, as it was on the last46 cent envelopes. No Official First Day Cancellations were available.Member Peter Zariwny was so nice to mail a first dayof both envelopes to me. Even so, that he had tooverpay 1 cent to write to me, since the postal rate stillwas only 46 cent on December 28.See photo copy below.

SPECIAL ENVELOPESThe so called special "Holiday" prestamped envelopessupposed to be available in selected Hallmark Goldstores before Christmas sure were a disappointment.Robert Lemire wrote the following on November13."When is a prestamped envelope not a prestampedenvelope? When it is a "pre-stamped" envelope. Thenew Hallmark test envelopes are out: Andrew Chungrounded some up, and found to his disgust that the"pre-stamped"envelopes are simply envelopes thathave a 46c Christmas adhesive affixed to eachenvelope. Certainly postal, and certainly stationery, butcertainly not postal stationery."

I have heard from reliable sources that the Year of theDragon 46 cent envelope used by Asia InternationalServices Corporation will be replaced by a 47 centYear of the Snake envelope with a stamp impressionsimilar to the adhesive postage stamp.

Member Mark Fennell found an interesting andeffective way to distinguish between the two printingsof the Year of the Dragon envelopes . He writes: "Afterreading the note in the Sept. 2000 issue of PSN re theprivate order Year of the Dragon 460 envelope, I

looked at both the original printing and re-printingunder a lOx glass and noted the dragon on the originalprinting is green but the reprint is brown, at least onmy copies, but both look the same from normalviewing distance.Possibly this is the major difference."

XPRESSPOSTThe 7 different "Festive Packaging" Xpresspostprepaid products showing a snowman and snowflakeson the front, on sale at some Post offices and postaloutlets before Christmas are very colourful and easy tospot where ever they were on sale. The Post office claimed it was a great product, makinggift wrapping unnecessary. In their own words: "Thiswill save the customer time. not to mention the moneyspent on wrapping paper and bows. They simply placethe unwrapped gift into the Festive Xpresspost packageand the recipient can then place it right under the tree.... We are offering a total of 56,000 items in a varietyof sizes."I do not know how successful they were in selling theseprepaid products.

CARDSAll 84 PCF cards, first printing in black now havebeen found with the new code sticker.Of these cards with the second printing, 57 have beenlocated so far.

Two postal stationery cards from Bruce McCallum ' s collection.

This 1974 Postal Museum card with the 8 cent Seymour Arm, B . C. Postal Route , Winter 1928 stamp impression has

the first day Ottawa Postal Museum cancel upside down on the lower left. A very unusual location , since the cancels

were printed on and, as far as I know, this was done the same time the cards were printed .. All other cards in the

package had the Ottawa postal museum cancellations at the correct place.

PART II - CARDS WITH PRINTED FRONTS -3. MONEY ORDER PICTORIAL CARDS

Part II, Section 3 deals with cards issued by the Canadian Express Company that have a facsimile ofa money order printed on the front . The listing relies heavily on Webb's Postal Stationery Catalogue of Canadaand Newfoundland, 601i edition (1993), and on contributions from Chris Ellis , Dick Staecker, and RobertLemire, and the author . So far there are 45 cards reported , with 28 different fronts. Many of these differencesare differences of ornament, hook, or colour. The ornaments and hooks are illustrated below , thanks to Webb.

i R f1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

We illustrate first the 28 fronts for which we have copies, followed by illustrations of all the backsthat we know of. Fronts are printed in blue, backs in black, unless noted otherwise.
