For 25 years a long list of artists, leaders and creative visionaries have

graced the Lied Center stage while millions of audience members

were dazzled, enlightened and forever transformed. Nebraskans

dont have to travel far to enjoy premier performances at a world-class

venue. The Lied Center is known as one of the top 100 performingarts centers in the entire world and statewide as the most recognized

arts organization.

We hope you nd the 25th anniversary season to be a year of

performances that you celebrate forever. The diverse array of programs

and legendary status of many of the artists truly creates a historicseason for our state. It is also a season that celebrates the amazing

talent right here in Nebraska.

Beyond the stage, Lied Center artists enrich the lives of Nebraska

students. Imagine the transformation and inspiration of students

working with Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Suzanne Farrell ballet

dancers, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater or orchestral great, the

Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Lied Center artists not only performon the stage, they also enlighten young people in the classroom.

Your support and involvement at the Lied Center is the foundation that

has made our organization a fundamental part of the fabric of the community. Ernst F. Lied and Christina Hixson have transformed the lives of millions of Americans

through the Lied Foundation Trust with philanthropic contributions of more than $300 million

to over 125 different organizations in seven states.

Born in 1906, Ernst F. Lied was a 1927 graduate of the University of Nebraska. He achieved

business success as the owner of a Buick dealership in Omaha and as a real estate

magnate in Las Vegas. Having no living relatives, he established a trust in 1972, and uponhis death in 1980, his secretary and business partner Christina Hixson was appointed toadminister the foundation. The rst gift from the Lied Foundation Trust was a $10 milliondollar matching grant to build the Lied Center for Performing Arts in the early 1980s at theUniversity of Nebraska-Lincoln in memory of Lieds parents Ernst M. and Ida K. Lied. TheLied Foundation Trust went on to support many projects in Nebraska including OmahasHenry Doorly Zoo Lied Jungle, the Lied Lodge in Nebraska City and the Lied TransplantCenter at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Christina Hixson rst partnered with Lied in 1944 as his secretary a t the OmahaBuick dealership and she followed him to Las Vegas as a business partner in 1960.

After Lieds death, Hixson became the executrix of his estate and continues toserve as the Lied Foundations sole trustee. It was Hixson who made the decision

to support the construction of the Lied Center for Performing Arts. In 2000, shealso announced a gift of $18 million to support UNLs Hixson-Lied College of Fine

and Performing Arts. One of the last major gifts of the Lied Foundation Trust wasa $2.5 million grant for the construction of the Lied Centers n ew multi-purposespace, the Lied Commons, which opened in 2012. Together, Lied and Hixson

built a multimillion-dollar empire that has positively impacted the lives of millionsof people in Nebraska and across the nation.

The Lied Centers most important role is to introduce

individuals from all walks of life and cultural backgrounds to

enriching and diverse performing arts experiences. It assures

access to world-class performances, especially for audiences

who might not otherwise have this opportunity.

The opening of the Li ed Center for Performing Arts in 1990 represented a huge step forward

for the cultural landscape of the University and the state. Over its 25-year history, the LiedCenter has provided education and entertainment for hundreds of thousands of Nebraskans.

Generations of students have experienced cultural education and enrichment thanks to theLied Centers location on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. I know I echo the

sentiments of many when I express pride in claiming the Lied Center as an important partof the University. My congratulations to the staff of the Lied for enhancing the lives of so

many Nebraskans by consistently presenting outstanding na tional and international talenton the Lied stage.

The time that students spend at the Universityis a very formative time in their lives. Ofcourse we hope they acquire the academicskills and the experience theyll need to besuccessful adults. They also need to explorehow their lives would be enriched by the arts,and which art form speaks to them and givesthem a broader view of what life is all about.

Education is central to the Lied Centers mission. The Lied staff approaches every artist about engagement opportunities

with students while they are in Lincoln. At least once a year, the Lied Center works to arrange special residency

programs that allow students and artists to spend an extended period of time working together. Over the years,

Nebraska students have had opportunities to connect with Yo-Yo Ma, Bill Cosby, Pilobolus, the Joffrey Ballet a ndthe casts of countless Broadway shows including South Pacic, RENTand Fiddler on the Roof.

UNL STUDENTS DANCE WITH DRONES

In April 2014, students from the College of Architecture,Department of Computer Sciences & Engineering and

the Glenn Korff School of Music Dance Program joinedforces with STREB, an internationally renowned dance

company known for their gravity-defying choreography.Since January, the students had been studying the work

of STREB and collaborating to create an innovative

exhibition combining architectural designs created by

UNL students, choreography developed by UNL dancers

and aerial robots from UNLs NIMBUS Lab. A public

performance was held at the Lied Center on April 11

prior to STREBs main stage performance.

Fabio Tavares da Silva, Associate Artistic Director of

In 1982, D.B. Woody Varner got an idea while reading

the newspaper that would lead to what was at the timethe largest grant in University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL)

history. He hoped to erect a statewide performing arts

center that would serve not only the people of Lincoln,but the entire state of Nebraska.

He wrote to Christina Hixson, trustee for the estate of

UNL graduate Ernst Lied. There was no response for

some time, Varner reported to the Lincoln Journal Starin

1990. Then, one bright and sunny day, I got a telephonecall from Tom Pansing in Omaha, attorney for the LiedTrust. He said that the trust was interested [in supporting]

something tangible and lasting as a memorial to Lied

and his parents E.M. and Ida K. Lied. A $10 million Liedtrust grant was awarded on the condition that Varner and

others raise another $10 million challenge grant.

Varner enlisted the help of a planning committee that

included Bob Carpenter, UNL architect; Ron Bowlin,

Kimball Hall program director; Sheila Grifn, who later

became the rst Lied Center interim director and DavidFowler of the UNL faculty.

The Lied Center for Performing Arts opened in 1990,

but construction on the building began in October of

1986. The Lied Center cost $20 million to build and was150,000 square feet (the addition of the Lied Commonsin 2012 added 8,107 square feet). There are 2,259 totalseats in the hall, with 1,304 on the main oor and 955

in the balcony.

Today the Lied Center for Performing Arts is a spectacular,

state-of-the-art performing arts venue designed to attract,

entertain and inspire a statewide audience. Establishedas Nebraskas Home for the Arts, the Lied Center is

recognized as one of the top 100 performing arts centers

in the world. A truly versatile space, for the past 25

years the Lied Center has hosted some of the greatest

artists and thought leaders in the world including M ikhailBaryshnikov, Isaac Stern, The Philadelphia Orchestra,

Bernadette Peters and Bill Cosby.

Beyond its physical capacity, the Lied Center is more

than just a venue to see world-class performances in

every genre. Its walls have provided a space where UNL

students and community members alike can engage

But it wasnt just individuals on the UNL campus that made

the Lied Center a reality. Over 2,000 individuals acrossthe state and country rallied behind Varners dream. The

Nebraska State Legislature appropriated $7 million andanother $3 million came from private donations. Support

for the Lied Center spanned from the University and

leaders like Chancellor Martin Massengale, to generous

individuals, to the political sector including Nebraska

state Governor, Bob Kerrey and Senator Jerome Warner.

From the beginning, the Lied Center was established as

a community treasure for all to enjoy and participate in.

with world leaders and hear the insights of political andreligious scholars, a setting where new artistic works are

created and developed, a place where Nebraskans canrelate to and learn from the greatest artistic minds of our

time and the site where thousands have experienced the

arts for the very rst time. Above all, the Lied Center isa place where lives are transformed.

With one of the largest stages in the Midwest region from

Chicago to Denver, over 13,000 square feet, and eightstories of y space (the empty space above the stage

used to attach and house ying scenery), the Lied Center

can present almost any nationally and internationally

touring production. The grand drape is 90 feet by 32

feet and weighs 2.5 tons. The main stage is made of velayers of soft wood in a grid pattern covered by battleship

linoleum providing a sprung oor for dancers. The stageoor was replaced in 2013 for the second time since theLied opened.

The colors used throughout the Lied Center were chosen

by a professional colorist from New York City, Donald

Kaufman, who said that the earthy tones reected the

spirit and warmth of the state of Nebraska. This color

palette is adhered to strongly today and followed even

in the newly added Lied Commons.

Every other aspect of design had to come second to

the acoustics of the hall. The acoustician, Mr. Paul

Veneklasen, examined and tested every detail of the

hall to assure the greatest natural sound possible.

There are no parallel walls in the Lied Center, creatinga unique acoustic space that lends itself to a resonant

audio experience. The padding of the seats was also

an acoustic detail specically selected so the sound inthe hall would be the same if a person was in the seator if it was empty. Whether a sold-out performance or

an intimate chamber concert, the acoustic quality of thehall would be optimal.

Mr. Veneklasen designed a superior acoustic space

recognized as one of the nest halls in the country. Tocontinue providing an excellent experience for ampliedsound performances, a state-of-the-art $500,000 soundsystem was installed in 2012. Speakers were hung in

precise locations to provide even distribution of sound

from the front of orchestra center to the very back row of

the balcony. This update was made possible by generous

donations from Lied supporters and has enhanced theLieds ability to present all forms of amplied performance.

As construction of the Lied Center neared completion,

Nebraska native, UNL graduate and late night television

legend Johnny Carson personally provided a major giftto nish the Lied Center. Project leaders quickly realized

the need for a secondary performance space for UNL

students to rehearse and for smaller scale community and

experimental productions to take place. It was decidedthat the generous gift from Mr. Carson would go towards

what is known today as the Johnny Carson Theater. This

black box theater is a versatile space that is utilized forsmall theater, dance or musical performances as well

as dinners, receptions, rehearsals and meetings. This

space can seat 250 patrons theater style and 216 at

banquet tables. Today the Johnny Carson Theater is

home to countless projects that require a more intimatespace including the Lied Centers own efforts to develop

new Broadway musical theater works through the Grow

A Show Festival and various workshops.

Thanks to an additional gift from the John W. Carson

Foundation in 2013, the Johnny Carson Theater lobby and

entrance will undergo a complete renovation beginningin August 2014. The transformation will not only honor

Johnny Carsons legacy with a special tribute area, butalso signicantly enhance patron amenities, provide more

space and comfort for Carson Theater productions andwill act as a beautiful plaza and entry leading to the artsquadrant of the UNL campus.

The Lied Commons was built in 2012 thanks to a $2.5 million gift from the Ernst F. Lied Foundation Trust to enhancethe Lied Center and provide an additional space for student learning, artist interactions and patron development.Christina Hixson chose to give this nal gift from the Lied Trust recognizing the need for an education and development

space, as well as an opportunity to increase the Lied Centers role as Lincolns premier venue for special communityevents. The Commons has been used extensively in its early years of operation with nearly 200 events held in thespace, from small concerts to wedding receptions to board meetings.

In the last few years, substantial behind-the-scenes

work has been done to revitalize the building in time for

the 25th anniversary. The roof was replaced, a new sound

system was installed, the lighting system was upgraded,

the stage oor was replaced, the HVAC system was

improved and many other large and small projects wereundertaken to ensure that the Lied Center will continue

to be the leading presenting venue it has always been.Future planned improvements include enhancements

to hearing assistance services to help patrons with

hearing loss as well as updates to exterior elements ofthe building including more LED signage.

The Lied Center would not be in existence without the

Lied Foundation Trust and all of the v isionary leaders

and key individuals across the state that turned adream into reality. Thank you to the Lied Foundation

Trust, major donors with endowed funds, the Friends

of Lied, Sterling Society and Gold Circle members, ourdedicated volunteers, staff, the University of Nebraska,University of Nebraska Foundation, foundations and

corporate sponsors who have empowered the Lied to

be an amazing center of the arts.

The Friends of Lied organization has been supportingthe Lied Center for Performing Arts ever since the groundwas broken for construction over 25 years ago. In thattime, the Friends have provided more than $4.3 millionto support the Lied Center in all capacities from on-

stage programming, the Arts Across Nebraska touring

program, free tickets for underserved children and adults

and educational outreach. With 80 members statewide,the Friends of Lied board orchestrates events throughout

the year including a massive membership drive, as wellas a large scale fundraising event and pre-performancedinners throughout the year. With nearly 1,000 members

across the state, the Friends of Lied are the Lied Centers

greatest ambassadors in the community. They invite

their friends, family and members of the community to

performances throughout the year and share the Lied

Centers mission and vision to "transform the lives of the

people of Nebraska through the performing arts" with

everyone they meet.

WOODY VARNER

Many consider D.B. Woody Varner to be

the father of the Lied Center. He cameto Nebraska by way of Michigan State,

was the rst person to hold the title of

President of the University of Nebraska(19701977) and later became chairman

of the NU Foundation until 1987. While

others shared the idea of building a

performing arts center on the Lincoln campus, the dreamfor the Lied Center truly took shape through his leadership.

While Woodys background was in agriculture, he had

a strong conviction that a truly academically rounded

individual should have some appreciation for the arts.

While the building did not go up until Woody was at the NU

Foundation, it was his determination to raise the necessary

funds that nally made his lifelong vision a reality.

Woody passed away in 1999, but many still remember

him and his mission to bring the nest artists in the worldto Nebraska. His mark will forever be on the University

and the Capital City thanks to his undying commitment

to this dream.

SHEILA GRIFFIN

If Woody Varner was the father of

the Lied Center, then Sheila Grifn

was certainly the mother. Sheila

was pivotal in every aspect of the LiedCenter. She was a key fundraiser andproject director during the initial stages,

and nally was appointed the Interim

Executive Director as the building took

shape. She also orchestrated the rst Friends of Lied

committee which later grew into the statewide board.

Sheilas passion for the arts and her connections in thecommunity and across the state made her invaluable

to the project. When the Lied Centers doors ofcially

opened, her inuence could be seen all over the building

itself and remains to this day. Under her guidance, theLied Center developed its reputation for bringing the

highest quality artists and performances to Lincoln andestablished itself as Nebraskas Home for the Arts. Sheila

passed away in 1995 but her legacy at the Lied Centercontinues with an endowment fund established in her

name that helps support performances at the Lied Center

each year.

E.N. JACK THOMPSON

E.N. "Jack" Thompson wasthe President of the CooperFoundation in the initial

phases of the Lied Center.

Woody Varner invited him

to join the campaign as co-chairman of the fundraising

effort. Jack was a highly

respected citizen in the community and always a

great friend of the University and the arts. He brought

his wisdom and expertise to the project, as well as a

$317,736 commitment from the Cooper Foundation anda $100,000 endowment fund for program support.

Jacks name was also given to the rst event that wasever held in the Lied Center, the E.N. Thompson Forumon World Issues. This lecture series continues today

in Jacks memory and has featured speakers includingMikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet Statesman; Holocaust

survivor and peace activist, Elie Wiesel; Maki Mandela,daughter of the former South African president; and

Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

In the original play What the Wind Taught Me,commissioned as part of the Lied Centers G row A Show

New Works Development Program, ctional ten year-

old Evan Davis spends much of his time looking at thesky through his beloved telescope. The loss of a parenthas added to Evans innate fear of storms, and a bully

delights in making his school day difcult. His troubles

culminate on the day a devastating tornado hits town,

blowing in with it a mysterious time-traveling teacher. Inthe midst of this crisis, Evan has no choice but to confront

all the storms he faces both literal and metaphorical.In doing so, he learns that anything is possible when

you have a tight knit family, a love of learning and helpfrom a wise teacher.

What the Wind Taught Me,written by Becky Key Boesen

and performed by Angels Theatre Company under the

direction of Judith K. Hart, had its world premiere in

the Lieds Johnny Carson Theatre in March 2013. The

play toured the state as part of the Lied Centers Arts

Across Nebraska program in September 2013. In total,the company performed eight student matinees and six

public performances in seven communities, reaching

over 5,900 people throughout the state.

In November 2013 students from the UNL Dance Program

were treated to a stretching class with contortionist

Buyankhishig Ganbaatar, a performer in Cirque Dreams

Holidaze. Ganbaatar led the students through a seriesof stretches, bridges and headstands, wowing the crowd

with her incredible exibility. The stretching master class

was just one of more than 20 offered annually as part ofthe Lied Centers education program.

nation and overseas submit new musical theater works for

development at workshops hosted by the American Society

of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in NewYork or Los Angeles. In 2013, ASCAP specically invitedthe Lied Center for Performing Arts to host an additional

New Musical Theater Workshop in Lincoln.

This event brought some of the nest emerging musicaltheater writers to our community, creating a unique

opportunity for the Lied Center and the University to workwith top Broadway professionals on creating new musical

theater works. The Lied Center developed the Grow A

Show Festival to accompany the workshop, including

master classes and a public cabaret performance which

incorporated local talent and visiting Broadway guestartists, under the direction of Alisa Belower, Coordinatorof Musical Theater Studies in the Hixson-Lied College ofFine and Performing Arts.

Singer andAladdin The Musical), and Broadway legendKaren Morrow (Showboat and The Mystery Of EdwinDrood) were the festivals honored guests.

In total, over 1,500 people attended festival events andover 50 UNL students, alumni, faculty and community

members participated as artists in the staged readings,master classes and cabaret performance. The Lied Center

will host its next ASCAP New Musical Theater Workshop

in Fall 2015.

Nebraska-Lincoln student has a professional performing

arts experience as part of their college education. To

support this vision, the Lied Center has led the way

nationally, designing ways for students to see world-class

performances at affordable prices while also providing

transformative engagement opportunities with its artists.

In 2010 a new initiative, Arts for All, was launched whichprovides free tickets for UNL students to attend Lied

performances. This new effort nearly doubled the number

of UNL students attending Lied performances and over5,000 tickets are now reserved annually through the

Lieds campus marketing and free Arts for All distribution

channels. As the Lied Center enters the next 25 years on

campus, the staff will continue working toward the vision

of providing opportunities for every UNL student to haveaccess to a world-class arts experience.

As part of the Lieds 25th anniversary, a special program

is being launched called The Big Red Lied Experience.

This program will feature the hit music group OK Go and

provides an exclusive opportunity for an additional 4,000

UNL students to experience a performance at the LiedCenter at no cost. The Big Red Lied Experience was

developed to further the Lied Centers initiative to provide

a professional performing arts experience to every UNLstudent during their time on campus.

Student, faculty and staff leaders on campus and

Chancellor Perlmans Ofce have played a large part

in the Lieds success connecting with UNL students.

These programs for UNL students would not be possible

without the support of the Association of Students of theUniversity of Nebraska, Lied Center Student Council,

Campus Advisory Board, Pace Woods Foundation, Ofce

of the Chancellor and the Division of Student Affairs. Each

has played an invaluable role in supporting the Lieds

mission and making the arts a vital part of the studentexperience at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Lied Center Statewide Advisory Board and Campus Advisory Board provide valuable resources and input thatenable the Lied Center to reach its full potential as a statewide arts organization. Over the past two decades, boardmember advocacy and contributions have played a major role in the success of the Lied Center.

The advisory board really serves as a sounding boardfor the Lied Center staff and executives. We representcommunities all over the state of Nebraska and help theLied Center determine the best ways to serve not onlythe Lincoln community, but communities across theentire state. My involvement with the Lied Center started

Dear Friends,Nebraskans are sophisticated, educated, connected and demand

the best when it comes to entertainment. I am honored to serve as

Artistic Director for Nebraskas Home for the Arts, particularly in thisvery special 25th anniversary year.

Executive Director Bill Stephan and I thrive on the challenge of

offering seasons that are even better than the previous ones and

we are proud to say that this season is one of the best in Lied

Center history, featuring marquee artists in every art form. Getting the

greatest artists in the world to the Lied Center is not always an easy

task. Programming our seasons is a collaborative process between

the Artistic Director and Executive Director. We balance curating aseason that is diverse, in-demand and of the highest artistic quality.

Successful programming involves being up-to-date on artistic

offerings and new up-and-coming artists. I believe my other life asa concert pianist combined with experience as an arts presenter forover 15 years are critical in helping me identify talent and quality.

While it would be nice to be able to say that our expertise and ye arsin the industry make for successful programming, we are frequentlyreminded that its not a perfect science. Its part knowledge, part

initiative and drive, but in large part begging, ghting, timing and luck!

There is truly something for everyone this season including the top American orchestra (Chicago Symphony), a

dance company that has transcended the world of modern dance (Alvin Ailey) and some of the most brilliant artisticminds of our time, like Yo-Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis to name a few. I hope to see you many times at NebraskasHome for the Arts this anniversary season.

The rhythms and syncopation of jazz music, which rstrang out in the United States over a century ago, are at the

core of American music. Jazz gave rise to b ig band and

popular music, but it is still alive and swinging at the Lied,

Just to see him made myheart pound and got me a little nervous, but I wasable to collect myself and play the solo. AfterwardsWynton worked with me on the solo, one-on-one. Thirteen out of my 25 years as a teacher I have beeninvolved in Broadway immersion projects with theLied Center. The students enthusiasm, engagementand interest were evident the rst time they steppedinto the Lied. I loved watching their faces light up ata performance or when working with a performer andthen returning to school eager to talk about what theyexperienced. Some of my students have gone on topursue a career in the performing arts because oftheir experiences at the Lied.

Established in 2014, the Glenn Korff Broadway Series enables the Lied Center

for Performing Arts to annually present the highest-quality Broadway shows

to Nebraskans while simultaneously providing opportunities for studentsto work hands-on with top performers and industry professionals. The

Glenn Korff Broadway Series also supports the creation and development

of exciting new Broadway productions through the Lied Centers Grow

A Show program. The Glenn Korff Broadway Series Endowment is

making an immeasurable impact on the performing arts in Nebraska.

Korffs passion for performing arts began on campus as a member of

Kosmet Klub, a male musical and comedy ensemble, for which he served

as a set designer. His experiences with theater at the University were

among his most cherished memories. The Lied Center was selected

to receive support with the hope that a stellar lineup of Broadway

performances might bring students and Nebraskans the same joy and

enrichment that his involvement with musical theater brought to his life.

Were most grateful for Glenns remarkable generosity, and the

University is honored to forever recognize his legacy to enrich the

human spirit through the arts, said UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman.
