WE’RE WELCOMING THE WORLD
THE 2015 THEMES
In our third year we’re proud to welcome more than 20 international guests from across the globe to our truly international festival. It’s fantastic to be developing partnerships with key creators and “players” in those countries which are leading the way in getting comics taken seriously as well as producing awe-inspiring work. We’re doing our best to up the ante here in the UK which includes commissioning new work by UK creators. This year they have included Jonathan Edwards, Louise Evans, Dan Berry, David Gaffney, Oliver East and
Joe Decie as well as original art by many more including Hunt Emerson. We’ve also commissioned our newest patron, Boulet, to create this year’s festival poster which pays homage to our Lakes Gang of mascots.
Anyway we hope you enjoy the breadth of work, celebrate old favourites and discover new ones too and we thank you, the audience, for your enthusiasm and support without which, of course, there would be no festival.....
Julie Tait, Festival Director and the entire festival team

JOE DECIE MURALEarlier this year Joe Decie created a new comic, There’s No Bath In This Bathroom, for and about the Toronto Comics Arts Festival. Continuing this series, Joe will be creating a new work, live in situ here in Kendal, about his time at LICAF. Working on the streets of Kendal, Joe will produce a large scale mural about an eventful evening this time last year. Spray paint, house paint, charcoal, wheat pasted posters and prints will make up elements of his comic, exclusive to the festival. As yet untitled, come and watch the story unfold. Joe will be producing the murals at Yard 2, off Stricklandgate. He’ll start Friday afternoon and keep going until he’s fi nished! 3For Timetable of events, please go to pages 49-53

As with any good festival there’s too much to choose from, so to help you we’ve tried to identify different styles of events. You may not know the creator/s but the style of event may appeal to you. We also have a few key themes this year which, again, may provide a route through the festival for you. There will be signing and sketching after each event as appropriate.

In election year, and with satire high on the agenda, who better to open our festival than multi-award-winning political cartoonist for The Guardian, Steve Bell?
For a third of a century Steve’s IF strip has been redefi ning the boundaries of political satire. In his cartoons our leaders have become grotesque monsters, and one Tory MP even wrote to The Guardian complaining that ‘to be forced to participate in Steve Bell’s perversions is degrading’. Now you can join Steve on a roller-coaster ride through the last fi ve years of coalition government and bang up to date. Savage, funny, rude, transgressing all the rules of good taste and beautifully drawn, don’t make this evening IF but when.

This animated folk legend was 8 years in the making and a labour of love for Isao Takahata, the legendary director of Grave of the Firefl ies. A masterpiece to rank amongst Studio Ghibli’s fi nest, it bursts with lush, hand-painted images accompanied by an enchanting musical score. After initially being shunned by British cinemas, Kaguya was nominated for the 2014 Oscar for best animation. This is why we are delighted to offer it as one of our opening events.
Found inside a shining stalk of bamboo by an old bamboo cutter, a tiny girl grows rapidly into an exquisite young lady. The mysterious young princess enthrals all who encounter her - but ultimately she must confront her fate - the punishment for a mysterious crime.
This screening will have a special introduction.

Frank Santoro is a world-renowned artist, cartoonist and educator based in Pittsburgh. His impact on comic art has been immense - and he’s never even drawn a superhero. Over the last 20 years he has pioneered new approaches to creating comics, and, in 2011, he founded the Santoro Correspondence Course, a distance learning programme for cartoonists that has infl uenced a new generation of artists all over the world. Even when he talks about panel layouts he’s riveting. This is a rare opportunity to experience one of Frank’s masterclasses. Taking music as a theme Frank will take you through a range of specifi c and accessible exercises which will both illuminate and provide a practical insight into his unique working method. Age 15+

He has exhibited throughout the world in a variety of group and solo shows, his comics have appeared in The New York Times magazine and his illustrations have appeared in The New Yorker and The Walrus. Graphics to Games... The Art of Jock
Step Aside Pops
and Back Again
The Art of Kate Beaton
The worlds of comics and games may seem very different, but there’s a surprising amount of crossover between the people who make them — and the skills needed to create them.
Writer Antony Johnston (The Fuse, Dead Space, Shadows of Mordor) hosts a discussion with fellow creators who straddle the line between comics and games, including Kieron Gillen (The Wicked + The Divine, The Curfew), Ian McQue (Grand Theft Auto), Bach (It’s Hard to Be a Girl), and Samuel Leblanc (Perfume of Lilacs).
Find out why comics and games have so much in common, why they attract a certain kind of creator, how a game gets made in the fi rst place, and whether games can be considered works of art in the same way as comics.
Jock is an award-winning, British artist renowned for his edgy, dynamic style and gritty design aesthetic. He is best known for co-creating the best-selling graphic novel series The Losers with Andy Diggle for Vertigo. He’s also behind the original graphic novel Hellblazer: Pandemonium for DC Comics and stunning covers for numerous titles such as X-Men, Daredevil and Scalped, which led to his nomination as Best Cover Artist at the Eisner Awards.
Jock has recently completed writing and drawing his fi rst mini-series for Marvel Comics, Savage Wolverine, and is currently drawing a major new creator-owned ongoing series, Wytches, with writer Scott Snyder. Join Chris Thompson to fi nd out more about the many different faces of Jock.
Since Kate Beaton appeared on the comics scene in 2007 her cartoons have become fan-favourites and gathered an enormous following, appearing in The New Yorker, Harper and the LA Times to name but a few. Her website, Hark! A Vagrant, receives on average 1.2 million hits a month. Praised for their expression, intelligence and comic timing, her cartoons are best-known for their light touch on historical and literary topics. Her new book, Step Aside Pops, takes a side-swipe at great men and women of history including Heathcliff, Wonder-Woman, Feminists and Hunks. Her latest project involves a fat pony... need we say more?
Come and meet Kate (and the fat pony) where she will be in conversation (and maybe drawing a bit too) with Alex Fitch of Resonance FM.

Reinventing the Horror Comic
Weird and Wonderful Worlds
Woo Hoo! It’s Bill Morrison
How I Make a Graphic NovelBryan Talbot Si Spencer & Dix
Mattias Adolfsson Workshop
Si Spencer has written for Grange Hill, EastEnders and The Bill. His comic work includes strips for Judge Dredd and Deadline, Books of Magick (with Neil Gaiman), Hellblazer: City Of Demons and the award-winning 2014 cult hit series Bodies. Dix is a freelance illustrator, designer and comic book artist whose work includes regular strips for The Guardian.
Now Si and Dix have collaborated to create Klaxon, a mould-breaking horror story published by SelfMadeHero in October 2015. John Freeman celebrates the launch of the book at the festival with Si and Dix and finds out why Klaxon is a very British horror story that owes more to William Blake than Stephen King.
Mattias Adolfsson describes himself as a “compulsive illustrator from Sweden”, but we would describe him as “pure genius”. When not doing commission work he spends his time creating phenomenal doodles in sketchbooks, random paper or anything that might be handy. Mattias has published four books, with his latest, The Second in Line, winning the Svensk Bokkonst Most Beautiful Swedish Book award in 2014. Learn the art of creating fantastical worlds and taking images from your mind (as weird as they may be) and putting them on paper. Age 12+
From Bambi to Bart Simpson and Mowgli to Moe, Bill Morrison has drawn them all, and almost everything in between. For the past few years he has spent most of his waking hours on projects related to The Simpsons, including video games, books and posters. When the Simpsons’ creator, Matt Groening, set up Bongo Comics, Bill was hired as art director and realised his cartoonist’s dreams when he drew the very first Simpsons comic. Bill is travelling from his US home to join us at the festival. John McShane will attempt to persuade Bill to reveal all about his extraordinary career and some secrets behind The Simpsons, including how it gets from page to screen.
Award-winning creator and festival patron Bryan Talbot takes you through the astonishing creative processes involved in drawing and writing one of his books. This exclusive masterclass will take you from original conception to finished page, covering research, plotting, story structure, scripting, the use of grids, panel transitions, page composition, layout, use of eye level, lettering and colouring (phew!).

The Art of Darwyn Cooke
Darwyn Cooke is a Canadian artist and animator who also happens to be one of the most highly-regarded comic artists in the world. He’s drawn almost every superhero known to humankind, as well as authoring such revered projects as The Spirit, DC: Solo, and Richard Stark’s Parker, all of which have won multiple Eisner Awards. His last major mainstream work was Before Watchmen: Minute Men. We are honoured to welcome Darwyn, on his first ever visit to the UK, to share the stories behind his work with Chris Thompson of Orbital Comics.
Winshluss (real name Vincent Paronnaud) is a French artist/writer who creates outrageous, terrifying and utterly beautiful graphic novels. He has been described as “a macabre humorist with no morals”. Take a look at his latest book In God We Trust, a gruesomely funny spiritual journey which follows the adventures of God, Jesus, Mary - and also includes some surprise guest appearances from a muscle-bound Conan and the Man of Steel himself. Viciously intelligent (and hilariously offensive) it reinforces his extraordinary talent as recognised with his previous book Pinocchio which won Album of the Year at the Angouleme festival 2009. A unique opportunity to meet this enigmatic Frenchman and to see him in action. (Winshluss will also be introducing the screening of the film Persepolis, which he co-directed). Breakdown Press is a London-based comics publisher dedicated to producing cutting-edge work by new cartoonists and forgotten classics of the past. Experimental and avant-garde, they produce risographs (that’s a special kind of digital photocopying), graphic novels and new translations of manga. This is an opportunity to discover the work of two of their leading artists, Joe Kessler and Antoine Cosse (on a special visit to the festival from France). Antoine’s book J.1137 received great critical acclaim on its launch at Comic Art Brooklyn in 2013, and Joe’s first book, Windowpane, was described by The New Statesman as “the best looking book you will hold this year”..

Shojo
Girl Power
A Girls’ World
21st Century Tank Girl
This event introduces us to the world of Japanese Shojo (“girls’ manga”) in the company of one of its major creators, Akiko Hatsu. In the 1960s Shojo was seen as a low form of manga, but as a result of the pioneering work of creators in the 1970s such as Hatsu, it is now a cultural genre to rival literature.
Akiko Hatsu’s stories cover a wide range of themes involving a mix of Japanese and Western elements. This, and her ability to create upright, noble characters, drawn in beautiful colours, has won her fans all over Japan. On her fi rst-ever visit to the UK comics expert Paul Gravett will take us on a journey through Akiko’s fascinating personal story, and will reveal the very special world of Shojo.
There is an accompanying exhibition in the Brewery Arts Centre: Shojo: The World of Girl’s Manga.
Tank Girl, the inspired creation of Jamie Hewlett and Alan Martin, is a classically British cartoon institution: anarchic, absurd and absolutely brilliant. Tank Girl drives a tank which is also her home. Declared an outlaw she embarks on a series of misadventures with her boyfriend Booga, a mutant kangaroo. Tank Girl quickly became a cult classic in the 1990s and it has had a whole host of reincarnations over many years, the most recent being 21st Century Tank Girl. Join us to celebrate the publication of its paperback edition with its stellar line-up of creators, Alan Martin, Jonathan Edwards and Warwick Johnson-Cadwell – all in conversation with Chris Thompson.

Three Rooms inValerie’s Head
Take Me Back to Manchester
Premiere
The Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head by Dan Berry and David Gaffney is a Lakes International Comic Art Festival commission. Experimental and original, it’s a live performance of a graphic novel with projected images and specially commissioned music by Sara Lowes. The piece explores relationships, memory, loneliness and obsession in a darkly humorous way, and will also be published in book form. Dan Berry is an illustrator, designer, cartoonist and lecturer. David Gaffney is an acclaimed short fi ction writer and this is his debut comic art collaboration.
Oliver East, a walking comic creator, was the fi rst artist to be commissioned by LICAF in 2014.
The Homesick Truant’s Cumbrian Yarn, a series of ten comics, charted Oliver’s walk of over 140 miles from Arnside to Carlisle following the West Cumbrian Railway Line.
Oliver’s proposal for a 2015 commission was equally persuasive.
For this project Oliver walked some 200 miles from Waverley Station Edinburgh to Manchester, following exactly the same route taken by an Indian elephant called Maharajah and his keeper Lorenzo Lawrence in 1872. Oliver was accompanied not by an elephant but by his phenomenally imaginative drawing and narrative skills, along with two fi lm-makers who followed him along the route.
Take Me Back to Manchester was fi lmed by Cumbrian-based fi lm-makers Dom Bush and Simon Sylvester. In this session Aileen McEvoy interviews Oliver East about his journey, followed by a special screening of the fi lm.

Persepolis
This highly-acclaimed fi lm has received numerous awards including the Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival as well as an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. It was written and directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (Winshluss).
Based on Satrapi’s graphic novel about her life in pre-and post-revolutionary Iran and later in Europe, the fi lm traces Satrapi’s growth from child to rebellious, punk-loving teenager. In the background are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iran in the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal-leaning family detained and then executed, and the looming shadow of the disastrous Iran/Iraq war.

Seth’s Dominion
Mattias Adolfsson & Boulet
We bring together two European giants of the live draw: Boulet (France) and Mattias Adolfsson (Sweden). They both draw with great imagination, detail and fl air, and are legends in their respective countries and beyond. The festival patron Boulet has more than 25 published books to his name, loves single malt whisky and French fries, and hates people who say, “in my humble opinion”. Mattias Adolfsson just can’t stop drawing and feels “half-dressed without his sketchbook”. He won the 2014 Most Beautiful Swedish Book award. If he could be one animated cartoon character it would be Mr Potato Head.
A screening of the atmospheric and insightful documentary about Canadian artist Seth, introduced by the artist himself.
Seth’s Dominion showcases Seth’s life and work with a combination of live action and animation. Refl ective, witty and nostalgic, Seth makes for an intriguing subject. Dominion is a 1950s city, a product of Seth’s imagination, which began as a series of sketches. Seth expanded Dominion into a 3D model city which later went on to be exhibited at art galleries. “You’re not aiming at the detail so much as the overall feeling,” Seth notes of his creative process.

Breaking the RulesThe Art of Dave McKean Stuart Medley
Stuart is an Australian comics creator and University lecturer who was in residence at the Maison des Auteurs, Angoulême, France in 2013-14. His Great Tree was comic critic Paul Gravett’s selection in Adventures in Comics, 2013. Clients for his comics include the UK’s Imperial War Museum. He is also the author of The Picture in Design.
Stuart will demonstrate that style is more important than drawing realistically when it comes to developing characters and communicating via comics. This workshop features practical exercises that demonstrate that the human mind can cope with the most outlandish exaggerations and proportional wrongness as long as categorization and identification can be preserved. Break the rules of depiction and invent your own! Participants will gain an understanding of how much visual information is necessary to convey particular meanings and how drawing realistically can actually be a disadvantage in visual communication.
You should bring along an idea for a character’s life: what do they do? What do they like? What is their back story? We’ll develop their look in the workshop. You should bring drawing tools that you are comfortable with (pencils, pens, or tablet and laptop) but also those you are less familiar with (try inking with a crow-quill or a brush that other comics artists might recommend on your favourite blogs) as the use of particular tools can profoundly affect your style. Age 15+
Arguably the most prolific artist of the past 50 years, Dave McKean has illustrated Richard Dawkins’ child-friendly The Magic of Reality, worked with the Rolling Stones (Voodoo Lounge), designed over 150 album covers (Tori Amos, Counting Crows, Alice Cooper and Michael Nyman) and created the magical beasts of two Harry Potter films. Yet it was during his time as a young art student when McKean began his life-changing partnership with Neil Gaiman - conjuring the darkly comic, multi-award winning novella Coraline and the dream-weaving covers for The Sandman, Violent Cases and Black Orchid. Since illustrating the most successful graphic novel of all time, Batman: Arkham Asylum, McKean has continued to transcend styles and trends. His self-penned Cages won several awards for the year’s best graphic novel. And then there are his children’s books... He is currently working on a fourth film, a new graphic novel called Caligaro, and more. Join Chris Thompson for a rare chance to see him in action and to delve into the mind of a living genius.

John McShane interviews husband and wife team Kathryn & Stuart Immonen about their incredible comic art careers and their imaginative collaborations.
Kathryn has been getting paid to make things up for more than 20 years. She has written stories for both DC and Marvel, but is best known for Journey into Mystery with Valerio Schiti and the sleeper hit mini-series Patsy Walker: Hellcat with David Lafuente.
Kathryn and Stuart’s webcomic Never as Bad as You Think was published in 2009 and Moving Pictures, a story of the theft and commoditization of both art and desire during the Second World War, was released by Top Shelf to wide acclaim in May 2010.
Stuart has a massive worldwide following which includes some of the best-known comic art creators. He has a distinctive aesthetic and brings characters powerfully to life. During his decade-long tenure at DC, in addition to writing and pencilling Adventures of Superman, Stuart illustrated the critically-acclaimed mini-series Superman: Secret Identity. Serious Fun with Comics
Where British Graphic Novels Began
Frank Santoro
Frank Santoro’s most heralded work, Storeyville, inspired the legendary Chris Ware to say, “I consider reading Storeyville for the first time one of the touchstones of my life as a cartoonist, and the book itself one of the landmarks of comics’ development.” It was self-published in tabloid newspaper form in 1995 and has since been reissued in deluxe hard cover editions by publishers in the US and France. Since then Frank has produced a unique body of work in a wide variety of formats and in the process pioneered an approach to comics’ production that tailors form to content. At the same time he acts as an online tutor and guru to the next generation of comic creators around the world. On an exclusive visit to the UK, Frank and his work will be introduced by one of his dedicated followers, renowned artist Oliver East.
This energetic panel presentation (there’s a lot to tell you in just one hour!) looks at the increasingly important role comics play across the range of university teaching and research; from designing comics for health awareness in Ghana, to learning languages; from understanding autism, to uncovering war and colonialism. Presented by The School of Languages from Cardiff University who are doing pioneering work in this area and hold the UK’s largest collection of Spanish comics.
Before Maus, before The Dark Knight Returns, and before Watchmen, there was Arkwright. Back when most comic readers were still shouting, “It’s Clobberin’ Time!” young Bryan Talbot already had far darker fish to fry. He was going to try something new: a serious, complex, intelligent adventure story for adults. The Adventures of Luther Arkwright became Britain’s first graphic novel. It’s satirical, intriguing, uncompromisingly violent, and filled with artwork of astonishing power and detail. Its influence was immense, and some say it has never been equalled. In this session, Bryan will discuss Arkwright and its place in the history of comics with producer and writer Peter Kessler, as well as showing some original artwork and answering your questions too.

Pugs of the Frozen North
Illustrate your Mantra
The Guardians of SatireSteven Appleby & Steve Bell
The Cartoonists’ Club of Great Britain
Reeve and McIntyre present
The Cartoonists’ Club, founded in 1960, is the UK’s largest cartoonists’ organisation. It is purely a social club and its members cover a very broad spectrum of the cartoon, comics and humorous illustration field. Here is your chance to get an overview of the club, its activities and the benefits it offers to members. The session includes a question and answer session with a panel of cartoonists.
Our festival finale offers you the chance to join writer/illustrator double-act Phillip Reeve & Sarah McIntyre on a magical journey to the Frozen North, in the company of brave sledge-racers, noodle-eating yetis and sixty-six pugs. Learn how to draw your own cartoon, how to defeat a hungry Kraken and discover the secrets of the Fifty Different Kinds of Snow.
Suitable for age 7+ and get your book signed and doodled after the event.
A hands-on workshop where you can take your favourite words of wisdom, be they song lyrics, inspirational quotes or mantras, and illustrate them on a postcard. Led by Mike Medaglia, creator of One Year Wiser, you’ll be encouraged to turn ideas into a drawing that you can keep for daily inspiration or send to a friend to inspire them. All supplies will be provided. Just show up and start drawing!
Age 12+
Steve Bell and Steven Appleby both produce regular strips for The Guardian and both pack a punch in a different way- one through his scurrilous satire of modern politics, the other through his uniquely unsettling but irresistible guide to life. Here they come together for the first time to draw live and, we hope, to give away some trade secrets.

This year we have extended the trail by creating exhibitions in two businesses in the town centre:
Brew Brothers will have an exhibition by Andy Poyiadgi whose comic Teapot Theory was shortlisted for the Observer/Jonathan Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize and was coloured with genuine English Breakfast tea.
White Stuff will have an exhibition by Mike Medaglia, a comic artist, illustrator and Zen Buddhist whose book One Year Wiser will be featured at the festival by SelfMadeHero. All the artwork in this exhibition will be for sale and the proceeds go to the charity that White Stuff regularly supports, the Bendrigg Trust.
Walking for Health. Make sure that you walk the whole trail. It starts at Kendal Leisure Centre, where you can park, leave the car and walk in to town. The trail is 3.2km long… which is 2 miles long… which is 4000 steps and you could burn up to 500 calories making your way around the trail... so comic art is very good for your health!
Prizes will be awarded for the Best Artist Window, Best School or Group Window and The People’s Vote. Make sure you cast a vote in The People’s Vote. Slips are available in the Windows Trail businesses and you can post your voting slip in the Brewery, Clocktower or leave it with the host business.

THE COMICS CLOCKTOWER
17 October 10am - 6pm18 October 10.30am - 5pm at Kendal Town Hall
What is it?This is your chance to meet more than 50 creators from around the world, see them sketch, get work signed as well as buy books, prints and more. Some work will be available for the first time at the festival. We aim to feed the hunger of existing comic art fans whilst appealing to a curious, new audience eager to find out more.
Most of our international guests, who feature in our main events programme, will also be appearing in the Comics Clocktower over the weekend to sign and sketch and meet their fans.
You’ll find a full timetable of appearances on our website from Wednesday September 30th
Who’ll be there?
As entry is free again this year we do expect to be managing numbers and there’ll be some queuing. We’ll aim to make it run as smoothly as we can and ensure a great experience for both visitors and exhibitors. Please bear with us and bring along a smile!
Please note that the Clocktower is also one of our ticketed events venues this year. We’ll be using one space in the building and there’ll be a separate queue for this. So don’t worry no-one’s queue-jumping! If they have a ticket for one of these events they will be given priority access to the venue 15 minutes before their event to ensure we keep to our rigorous time schedule.

On Thursday the 15th of October at 3pm, six incredible artists will enter a room in Kendal to draw in a single day a whole 24 page comic book each. The following day each of those books will be printed and available for sale at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
John Allison, Dan Berry, Jonathan Edwards, Jade Sarson, Richard Short and Emma Vieceli clearly do not care for the sweet bliss of restful sleep, the caress of sunlight upon skin or the general wellbe-ing of their spines and wrists. Their only concern is to draw you the very finest stories, comfort be damned.

Shōjo MangaWorld Of Japanese Girls’ Comicsfrom the Kyoto International Manga Museum
We are proud to present the fi rst major exhibition of Japanese shojo (girls’) manga in the UK in association with the Kyoto International Manga Museum. This exhibition introduces the world of Japanese shojo (girls’) manga through elaborate replica (“Genga’ (Dash)”) prints developed jointly by Kyoto Seika University’s International Manga Research Centre and the manga artist Keiko Takeuchi, Principle of Kyoto Seika University. Genga’ (Dash) prints are copies of original artworks that have been faithfully reproduced aiming to conserve original manga artwork which is easily damaged and worn.
Japan’s shojo manga culture dates back to the post-war years but only evolved into its broad-ranging and hugely-popular form of today as a result of the innovative work of a small group of artists in the 1970s. This exhibition features the work of 3 of these artists – Akiko Hatsu, Keiko Takemiya and Yukiko Kai. It will be accompanied by examples of work by a further 17 artists who have helped shape the world of shojo manga since it began.
The 1970s were known as a turning point in the history of shojo manga, when artists such as Takemiya emerged on the scene turning what had previously been seen as a “low” form of manga into a cultural genre to rival literature. She published many shojo manga exploring new themes such as young homosexual love (“The Poem of Wind and Trees”) and science fi ction (“To Terra”).
Yukiko Kai was part of the wave of innovative manga artists working in Japan in the 1970s as well as one of the driving forces behind that wave. Her work covers a range of themes from science fi ction fantasy through to romantic tales set outside of Japan as well as strongly Japanese creations themed around Noh theatre. Her drawing skills make her a noted artist and she was appreciated particularly by other manga artists. Tragically she died at the age of 26 and as a result only short story versions of her work remain. Their beauty, however, is truly worth being communicated outside of Japan.
Akiko Hatsu is the younger sister of Yukiko Kai and currently works full time as a manga artist. She is deeply steeped in Japanese tradition, having worked on comic versions of work by authors such as Kyoka Izumi, and nowadays working on serialisations such as “Dreams of Uryudo” which expand on her unique worldview. Her stories are set not only in beautiful Japan but also in the UK and her work, drawing on both East and West, has the potential to be widely appreciated here.
Akiko Hatsu will make her fi rst trip outside of Japan to appear at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival.
Find out more about the wonderful world of shojo manga – not just for girls nor just by girls….

Curated by Sean Phillips
This exhibition showcases the versatility and talent of comic book artists from around the world who have created record covers for bands both big and small, famous and infamous. Curated by internationally-renowned comic artist and festival patron Sean Phillips, Phono+Graphic celebrates the bands, the music and the art through 60 vinyl record covers by 60 artists.
The Lakes International Comic Art Festival invited Sean Phillips to choose the covers and help design the exhibition with Kendal Museum/College. The exhibition includes record covers by the likes of acclaimed Batman artist Neal Adams, Judge Dredd artist Brian Bolland, cartoonist Robert Crumb, Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett and some of this year’s Festival guests – Charlie Adlard, Hunt Emerson, Dave McKean and Phil Winslade.

“While researching the exhibition I was surprised to discover just how many well-known comic artists had drawn album covers. I’d planned to have two covers by each artist if they’d done that many, but I soon had to change that plan. There’s far too many to fit in one exhibition. I had to be quite ruthless in my curation, although it was more surprising to discover covers that I had no idea had been drawn by comic artists. Albums like David Bowie’s ‘Diamond Dogs’, with a painted cover by Guy Peellaert. Equally hard was whittling down the art to just 60 pieces. Some classic sleeves and albums just had to be included, but apart from that, I just went with what I liked. I had to either like the work of the cover artist or the music, and sometimes both happened! There’s a lot of old classics, but also plenty of recent covers by contemporary artists.
On a purely artistic level, I really like Christian Ward’s cover for ‘The Pictish Trail’ and Dan Clowes cover for ‘Las Vegas Grind Volume Four’. Nostalgically, Richard Corben’s painting for the cover of Meatloaf’s ‘Bat Out Of Hell’ can’t be beaten for music lovers of a certain age.
All the records also had to be on 12” vinyl and apart from one which is too good to miss out, I’ve managed that. The art looks at its best at that size – and nobody wants to be squinting at a CD sized picture on the wall. The oldest picture in the exhibition is a French, spoken-word album of a Tintin book. The original picture was drawn by Herge in the 1930s but I think the record is from the 1950s”. Sean notes. “He’s one of the greatest European cartoonists ever, and everybody knows who Tintin is, so I’d be daft not to include it. The next oldest is ‘Cheap
Thrills’ by Big Brother and the Holding Company. Robert Crumb drew that cover in 1968, and the exhibition also includes another of his covers from 2008.
The most recent is the self-titled debut album by Cosmic Rays. Fellow festival guests and band members Charlie Adlard and Phil Winslade both contributed art to the gatefold sleeve. Charlie will be taking a break from drawing zombies for The Walking Dead for the band to play at the festival so I had to include them!”
Sean Phillips will be in situ on Saturday 17 October 2015 from 11am-1pm and available to discuss the exhibition as well a signing and sketching.

As well as satisfying your hunger for comic art we know that a critical part of a good festival is being able to keep your energy levels up by fi nding the right kind of food, in the right kind of places and, wherever possible, avoiding long queues. We have done our best to recognise this by working in partnership with some of Kendal’s favourite cafés, bars and restaurants. That isn’t to say there isn’t a fi ne food and drink offering right across the town and you’ll fi nd plenty of places to accommodate different tastes and budgets. We highlight here those based at some of our key venues and/or those who have made an extra special effort to celebrate comic art in its various guises helping to make Kendal a comic art town for the weekend.

Box Office 01539 725133 www.comicartfestival.com
Practical informationThe festival is spread across the town and you will need to leave enough time between events to get from one location to another as we operate a strict no latecomers policy, to ensure maximum enjoyment for audiences and a focused, uninterrupted experience for the artists and creators.
These figures will give you an idea of walking times at a steady walking pace but obviously if you have mobility difficulties, or walk particularly slowly, you may take longer!
It’s a good idea to leave yourself more than enough time, and if you are collecting tickets from the Box Office in advance, be aware that there is likely to be a queue. Our advice is to collect all your tickets for the weekend as early as possible and, if you get chance, to familiarise yourself with the venues in advance.
More detail about getting to Kendal, each event and all the venues is available on our website
