Copyright-related Issues on
AR-VR-Media Production
Contents
1. Creative Commons
2. Public Domain
3. Good practice
1. Creative Commons (CC) 共享創意(http://creativecommons.org/)
Founded by Stanford Law Professor Lawrence Lessig in 2001
Aims at facilitating copyright owners in licensing the copyright of their works
on the basis of certain preset terms and conditions of their choice. Users may
also benefit from CC licenses by using the copyright works free of charge, as
long as they comply with terms and conditions of the licenses.
Besides “all rights reserved” and “public domain”, enables creators to opt
for “some rights reserved.”
Includes 289 community members who serve as CC representatives in over 60
countries including Hong Kong (https://hk.creativecommons.org/)
Creative Commons (CC) – con’t
6 types of CC Licenses:
1. Attribution (CC BY)
2. Attribution ShareAlike (CC BY-SA)
3. Attribution-NoDerivs (CC BY-ND)
4. Attribution-NonCommercial (CC BY-NC)
5. Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike (CC BY-NC-SA)
6. Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs (CC BY-NC-ND)

2. Public Domain 公眾領域
Refers to creative materials that are not protected by intellectual
property laws such as copyright, trademark, or patent laws. The public
owns these works, not an individual author or artist. Anyone can use a
public domain work without obtaining permission, but no one can ever
own it
Music, films, literature, images, software… all of intellectual properties
may be in the public domain
Public Domain – con’t
There are four common ways that works arrive in the public domain:
(a) the copyright has expired;
(b) the copyright owner failed to follow copyright renewal rules;
(c) the copyright owner deliberately places it in the public domain, known as
“dedication,” or
(d) copyright law does not protect this type of work.
Public Domain – con’t
Where to find free public domain materials?
Library of Congress (Images)
British Library (Images)
Pixnio (Images)
Pixabay (Images and videos)
CopyrightFreePhotos (Photos)
Free Music Public Domain (Music)
Free Music Archive (Music)
Public Domain Movies (Feature films)
3. Good Practice
Copyright exists everywhere no matter in video, background music, images,
and etc.
Always list the citation of the materials as reference
Always clearly acknowledge the source(s) and author(s), and any information
restricted by any copyright license
No magic number for fair dealing (e.g. 10 minutes feature films clip). If in
doubt, always asks for the permission of the copyright owner
