Adopting a park or trail isn’t just about work, it’s about fun! Your group’s time at your adopted park could include a picnic, outdoor games, or a fishing outing. Best of all, it’s an opportunity to get to know one another better.

PARK ACTIVITIES & SUMMER CAMPS

Sports, games, water activities and arts and crafts are all included in this two week program. Special guest visitors include; officers from the Grand Island Police Department, Deputies from the Hall County Sheriff's Department, staff from the City Library, staff from Nebraska Extension’s Nutrition Education Program, and staff from the Grand Island Clean Community System! Sessions are two weeks in length and meet Monday through Friday. Drop-off and pick-up locations are at the following parks: Stolley Park Wading Pool, George Park Northwest Picnic Shelter, Grace Abbott Park Band Stand.You must pre-register your child for each camp they participate in. Camp cost is $12/child. The minimum number of campers needed is eight. All campers must be potty trained. Campers are encouraged to bring a small snack and drink each day, as well as swimsuit attire for any visits to the wading pools or water games.

Self-defense techniques are one of those skills you hope you never have to use, but need to learn in order to prepare for the unknown. This camp will teach you basic communication skills and simple and effective self-defense techniques. Camp is led by members of the Grand Island Police Department and will give participants the insight needed to help keep themselves safe. Campers will need to wear comfort-able clothing and athletic shoes. Max number of participants is 15 for each day so register early!

HEALTH & WELLNESS FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOLER Located at Stolley Park

Tuesday, June 1 - Friday, June 4 | 9am-noon | middle school age | $20Spend a week learning about yourself and how to create an awesome life! Partici-pants will each self-evaluate where they are in the 12 areas of wellness, (including Self-Love and Responsibility, Breathing, Emotion, Nutrition, Movement, Playing and Working, Communication, to name a few). A personal Wellness-Wheel will be designed and a plan put into place for everyone involved. The week will include many experiences in all areas of health. Activities will include outdoor sessions and classroom time. Students will exit with a plan and goals in place to help them to reach higher potentials.

VACATION IMAGINATIONLocated at Stolley Park

Monday, July 26 - July 30 | 10-noon | 6-11 year olds | $50 The Sky’s the Limit with Vacation Imagination. Campers will get to create unique crafts, make sticky slime, explore magic and participate in fun camp games! Camp-ers will learn fun camp songs that energize the soul. Imagination is the key in this fun camp! If we can imagine it, we can make it possible. Don’t pass up this great opportunity for fun in the sun. CHEER/DANCE CLINICLocated at Stolley Park

Saturday, June 19 | 10-noon | 6-12 year olds | $20 Check-in will be at 9:30am

Join Megan Wardyn, member of the Nebraska Spirit Squad, as she leads a clinic that will be an introduction to cheerleading! Participants will work on skills such as jumps, pom arm motions, cheering and chanting, and learn a fun cheer/dance routine! No tumbling or stunting will be performed. Participants should wear cloth-ing that is comfortable and easy to move in as well as tennis shoes. No denim/jeans and hair needs to be pulled out of face. Participants are encouraged to bring pom poms if they have them. A small performance will be given for parents at 11:50am.

Monday, June 21 - Wednesday, June 23 | 10-noon | 9-13 yr olds | $20Do you have what it takes to be a WARRIOR?! Put on your camo and join Staff Sergeant Jost from the United States Army to find out! She’ll have a morning full of team building activities as well as some friendly competitions. How many push-ups can you do? How well can you compete when your limitations depend on your partner beside you? Find out if you have what it takes! Participants will have the opportunity to make their own dog tags and will leave with a better appreciation for themselves and their new friends.

BASKETBALL - BALL HANDLING 101Located at Stolley Park

Thursday, June 10, 17 & 24 from 11-noon | 7-12 year olds | $5Want to improve your game, but don’t have anyone to play with? Grab your bas-ketball and head to the park! Participants will hone their bball skills with only their own basketball and some guidance! Numerous drills will be gone over to continue to challenge you as you work to be a better player throughout the summer! Please bring your own basketball and water.

Thursday, June 24 | 10-noon | 10-14 years old | $15Join Detective Winton from the Grand Island Police Department’s Criminal Division as you see first-hand how crimes are solved! You’ll be able to witness and try out all the cool and scientific ways that evidence is collected. Participants will see how finger prints are dusted and lifted as well as how hidden prints are found! If that’s not enough, learn the methods of the professionals on finding and casting footprints! Because of the specialty of this camp, registration is limited to 10 per session so sign up today!

PICKLEBALL 101Located at Stolley Park on the Pickleball courts

Tuesday, June 15 - Thursday, June 17 | 10-noon | 7-11 yr olds | $10Why wait any longer to learn the fastest growing sport in the country?! Grab your paddle and join two of Grand Island’s most knowledgeable players as you learn how to play Pickleball! This is a great opportunity to get started on a sport that can be played by anyone and everyone. Parents are also welcome to come learn the ins and outs of the game. WILDERNESS ADVENTURE CAMP Located at Stolley Park

Monday, July 12 - Friday, July 16 | 10-noon | 8-12 years old | $40Are you ready for your next summer adventure? Grab your binoculars and put on your safari hat because this camp will teach campers how to track wildlife, recognize exotic Nebraska birds and catch a fishy dinner (dinner not included). SWIMMING LESSONSListed below is a description of what your child will learn while participating in that particular level of the Learn To Swim Program. You must pre-register your child for each individual class. COST IS $35 PER CHILD. Due to the limited number of children per class, no early registrations accepted. No phone registrations accepted.Our Learn-to-Swim offers something for everybody. Instructors are trained and certified by the American Red Cross, so swimmers of all ages and abilities are in good hands.The pre-requisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level, except for Level 1, which thas no pre-requisite. Each level of Learn-to-Swim includes training in basic water safety and helping others in an emergency, in addition to the skills outlined below:

PARENT & CHILD AQUATICSBuilds basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping infants and young children ages 6 months to about 3 years become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. These basic skills include adjusting to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating breath control, including blowing bubbles or voluntarily submerging under water.Participant skills include: Getting wet with toys and kicking • Enter water by lifting in and walking in • Out-of-water and in-water exploration • Exit water by lifting out and walking out • Blowing bubbles on the surface • Blowing bubbles with mouth and nose submerged • Underwater exploration • Submerging mouth, nose and eyes • Front and back floats and glides • Roll from front to back and back to front • Passing from instructor to parent • Leg actions on front and back • The importance of wearing a life jacket • How to call for help and the importance of knowing first aid and CPR • Basic water safety rules • General water safety around the home • Recreational water illnesses• Sun safety

PRESCHOOL AQUATICSGives young children about ages 4 and 5 a positive, developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and foundational swimming concepts. Island Oasis offers over six acres of refreshing family fun! Guests can brave the waves in the 350 thousand-gallon wave pool or relax and unwind in our 750-foot lazy river. More adventurous thrill seekers will experi-ence the force of gravity firsthand when they ride one of two six story high-speed slides! Adventurers can also attempt to tackle four giant 150-foot slides. Children will love zero depth areas that include spraying foun-tains and a wacky wet otter slide. Plus they can build sand castles in the sand, stroll across the lily pads, or test their skills on the log walk. Enjoy a match of sand volleyball then drop your anchor and feed the crew at our full concession and patio area.

This is a program for boys and girls ages 8 to 13. The program promotes basic running, jumping and throwing skills to the youth participants. First through forth place finishers of the Grand Island local meet automatically qualify for the State meet held in either Grand Island, Kearney, York, North Platte, or Hastings.

The "Grand Island Games" are a unique version of a team style Olympics that gives participants a chance to take part in a wide variety of recreational activities. Teams may be family members, co-workers, service clubs, churches, friends, etc. and be at least six people, but no more than 30. VENGER TACTICAL DEFENSIVE PISTOL COURSE LEVEL 1

The Venger Tactical Defensive Pistol Course level 1 (VDPC-1) is designed to help the beginner get familiar and comfortable with safely using his or her handgun. Class begins with a familiarization to get you used to handling your pistol. We will show you ways to draw your handgun from your holster, acquire a target and engage a target while being aware of your surroundings. On the range you will practice loading, firing, and clearing a handgun under the guidance and supervision of former Green Beret and current NRA instructor Erin Cook and Wade Bentley, a current member of the GIPD Tactical Response Team and NRA Instructor. During this time, you will begin with slow-aimed fire and progress to shooting around barriers, discuss cover and we will show you how to use it to your advantage. You will be shooting a variety of targets from varying distances and positions. Carrying a handgun is a big responsibility and we want you to have the confidence to handle it responsibly, with the safety of friends and family in mind.

Our parks are open year round, however some facilities are operated on a seasonal basis. Park hours are 5:30 a.m. - 11 p.m. daily. Restrooms are scheduled to open May 1st and close October 1st.
