State Budget Update We wrote and called and they heard us! House Majority Leader Denise Merrill in particular cited the potent, articulate, and sincere effort by librarians and library supporters on behalf of those who depend upon their services at the close of the final late night state budget session for the House of Representatives. Please thank our key lawmakers for their continued support of library programs. They will appreciate your input, as they had some very tough choices to make and will continue to do so in the weeks and months ahead. The Governor and Lieutenant Governor, although not endorsing the budget that ultimately became law, will be working with House and Senate leaders to balance services and revenues throughout this difficult period. Let them know that with their help, Connecticut's libraries will be able to serve those in need throughout the state by delivering information, education, Internet access, and training effectively and efficiently in our communities. VITA Volunteers Needed!

Looking for a different kind of volunteer work? How about volunteering to do taxes for Wilton residentswho may be unable to afford commercial tax preparation services this tax season? Wilton Library is looking for volunteers to spend a little time learning about taxes. If you're interested, you'll be trained with Internal Revenue

Service tax materials to help people whose incomes are $40,000 or less with their federal and state income tax returns. You need not have any accounting experience! All that's required is a desire to help others who cannot prepare their basic tax returns or afford to pay a preparer. VITA volunteers will participate in a short training session, then be tested on what they learned. Once certified, volunteers will be assigned to the Library as a VITA site and scheduled to assist others. Don't wait! For more information, contact VITA coordinator Ron Brotherton by phone at (203) 762-5158 or by email.
