2 Curated News EditionEgyptians head to polls for 2-day electionrunoffs(USATODAY.com News)Submitted at 12/5/2011 10:57:57 AMCAIRO (AP) A trickle of

    Egyptian voters headed to thepolls Monday for two days ofrunoffs in the country's firstparliamentary elections sinceHosni Mubarak ' s ouste r , aballoting in which Islamist partiesa l r e a d y c a p t u r e d a noverwhelming majority of the

By Odd Andersen, AFP/GettyImagesA man prepares his ballot paper

at a polling station during therunoff of the first round of votingin Cairo.

Turnout in the morning hoursappeared to be lower thanexpected, and the trickle of votersat some polling stations was asharp contrast to the massive linesduring the first round a week ago, when the turnout was nearly 60% the highest in Egypt's modernhistory.Architect Hala Shaker, 39, said

she thought the low turnoutMonday was "scary," since smallvoter numbers could serve theIslamists in her constituency,

where runoffs were betweenIslamists and secular candidates."We don't want people with strictideology who will force theirviews," she said. "We're Muslimsbut we don't want these peopletelling us how to practice ourreligion."

The runoffs are unlikely tochange the Islamists' gains, whichhave dealt a huge blow to liberalsbehind the uprising that toppled

Mubarak 10 months ago.According to results released on

    S u n d a y , t h e M u s l i mBrotherhood's Freedom andJustice Party garnered 36.6% ofthe 9.7 million valid ballots castf o r p a r t y l i s t s . T h eultraconservative Salafists' Al-Nour Party, a more hard-lineIslamist group, captured 24.4%,while the secular Egyptian Blocwon 13.4% of the votes.

    women to cast her ballot Mondayi n a n u p p e r - c l a s s C a i r oneighborhood, Sohair Qansouahsays she is worried over theIslamists' win because she doesn't

want Egypt to "go back 1,000years."

"I 'm Musl im and we wantfreedom and tolerance for all, butif they (Islamists) come to power,

    there will be less freedom for all,e s p e c i a l l y w o m e n , " s a i dQansouah, 72, adding that aparliament dominated by Islamistswill "mean that all the objectivesof the revolution have failed."But others expressed a different

view."We want Muslims who fear Godto rule because they are cleanerthan those who came before," saidKarim Nabil, a 24-year-voter who

cast his ballot while holding aBrotherhood leaflet in the otherhand. There are still two more rounds

of voting staggered over thecoming weeks. The ballots are aconfusing mix of individual racesand party lists, and Sunday'sresults only reflect the party listperformance for less than a thirdof the 498-seat parliament.Violations such as campaigning

    outside polling centers have been

    rife.Brotherhood activists sat with

laptops outside polling stations tohelp voters find their way, distributing leaflets with namesand symbols of their candidates. In Cairo's overcrowded Bab el-

    S h a r i y a n e i g h b o r h o o d ,Brotherhood posters were strungoverhead along the alleywayleading to polling centers. A voter-turned-activist MohammedRadwan, 24, said he voted for theBrotherhood because i t i s

"natural" that Egyptians vote forIslamists."Our belief is that the Quran andtraditions of the Prophet shouldrule our lives," Radwan said whileh a n d i n g o u t B r o t h e r h o o dcampaign material. "Some peoplecome to me and say, 'I don't knowhow to vote,' so I help them," hesaid.Asked about campaigning on

e lec t ion day , Radwan sa idEgyptians under Mubarak were

not "used to elections" and he wasonly helping voters learn aboutsome of the 101 Brotherhoodcandidates. The strong Islamist showing

worries liberal parties, and evensome religious parties, who fearthe two groups will work to pusha religious agenda. It has also leftmany of the youthful activistsbehind the uprising that oustedMubarak in February feeling that

their revolution has been hijacked.Since Mubarak's fall, the groups

    that led the uprising and Islamistshave been locked in a dispute overw h a t t h e c o u n t r y ' s n e wconstitution should look like.The new parliament will be

tasked, in theory, with selecting a100-member panel to draft thenew constitution. But adding totensions, the ruling militarycouncil that took over fromMubarak has suggested it will setcriteria to the choice of 80 of

Does the Public Have a Right to KnowAbout a Candidate's Personal Life?(Christianpost.com > Politics)

    Submitted at 12/5/2011 1:44:36 PM

Penny Nance, CEO of ConcernedWomen of America, weighed inon the issue with an opinion pieceand in a conversation with TheChristian Post, saying that yes, character does and shouldmatter.I think the public does have aright to know about a candidatespersonal background, Nance told

The Christian Post. How aperson conducts themselves says alot about how they are going tolead and govern not to mentionhow they think. The question before citizens is,Do we have a right to holdelected officials to a high moralstandard? Nance wrote in hercolumn. While Cain may be thelatest public figure to succumb tomedia revelations, recent historyhas produced numerous examples

on both sides of the aisle.Cain faced multiple allegations of

sexual harassment and a 13-yearaffair in recent months whilerunning for the Republicanpresidential nomination. Herejected the accusations as falsebut decided to end his campaignon Saturday over what he saw asdistractions.Former President Bill Clinton

initially denied having sex with anintern in the Oval Office and latersurvived an impeachment hearingand the public scrutiny that comes

w i th suc h a h igh -p ro f i l ere ve la t ion .Like us on FacebookEven after it became apparent

tha t President Cl in ton hadcommitted adultery while inoffice, liberal feminist groupscame to his defense by saying hisbehavior was no ones businessby trying to distinguish between acandidates private and publiclife. If you want your life to be

private, then I would recommendyou stay out of the public arena,

Nance pointed out. Besides, having an inappropriate sexualencounter in the White House isnot a private incident.Former Senator and Democratic

    presidential candidate JohnEdwards is still dealing with thef a l l o u t f r o m a n e x p o s e dextramarital affair that produceda n i l l e g i t ima te c h i ld a ndRepublicans such as LouisianaSenator David Vitter and formerSouth Carolina Gov. Mark

    Sanford endured their ownr e p e r c u s s i o n s a f t e r t h e i rextramarital affairs were publiclydisclosed.Even GOP front-runner Newt

Gingrich has had to constantlydeal with questions of the affairhe had with his current wife whilestill married to his second wifewhen he was Speaker of theHouse in the late 1990s.

    Nevertheless, an importantquestion remains.

Assuming a candidate has fallenshort and sinned in their life, can

they be forgiven and still wage asuccessful political career?Yes, sa id Nance . As aChristian, I know we have allsinned and fallen short of theglory of God. People who reallyknow me could certainly give youexamples of moments when Iwasnt gracious or loving, butacted ugly and thoughtlessly. To use a Christian phrase, its allabout grace and redemption,Nance added. As believers,

Gods endless goodness andmercy offer freedom from thedest ruc t ion caused by ourimmoral choices. Whether theyremade in private or in the open.God doesnt discriminate betweenour pubic lives and our privatelives, because He looks at thewhole person. And admittedly, wecant see someones heart. But Nance was careful to say that

the ultimate decision of being ableto accept a candidates apology

that they are indeed repentant oftheir past actions will be up to the

individual voter. While I do believe someonewhose sins have been publiclyrevealed can once again serve inpublic office again, I also believepeople want to see evidence thatsomeone was truly changed thatthey are indeed repentant for theirsins and more importantly, havechanged their behavior for thebe t te r . Often , tha t doesnt[happen] overnight and takessome time.

4 Curated News EditionPakistan PM says he wants to improve USties - CTV.ca(Top Stories - Google News)Submitted at 12/5/2011 3:02:32 PMDate: Monday Dec. 5, 2011 2:28

    PM ETLAHORE, Pakistan Pakistan

PM says committed to rebuildingUS ties after deadly NATOairs t r ike In an over ture toWashington, Pakistan's primeminister said Monday his countrywants to repair U.S. relations

pushed close to rupture sinceNATO airstrikes on the Afghanborder killed 24 Pakistani troopslast month.Yousuf Raza Gilani's interview

with The Associated Press wasthe strongest indication yet thatIslamabad realizes Pakistan needsan alliance with Washington evenas it continues retaliating for theNov. 26 raid by blocking NATOand U.S. supplies from travellingover its soil into landlocked

Afghanistan. The interview came a day after

U.S. President Barack Obamacalled Pakistan's president to tellhim that the airstrikes were notdeliberate targeting of Pakistanisoldiers and that the U.S. wascommitted to a full investigation. The White House said Obama andPresident Asi f Al i Zardar irea ff i rmed the i r countr ies 'relationship, which it described as"critical to the security of bothnations," and agreed to keep in

    close touch.Gilani didn't offer the U.S.

anything other than Pakistan'swillingness to consider startingover, apparently believing theattack had given Islamabad freshleverage to dictate terms in whathas been an uneasy and largelytransactional relationship sincePakistan joined the U.S. waragainst violent Islamist extremismafter the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

Gilani said new ties beingnegotiated with the U.S. wouldensure that the two countries"respected each other's red lines"regarding sovereignty and rules ofengagement along the border."We really want to have goodrelations with the U.S. based onmutual respect and clearly definedparameters," he said in theinterview at his residence in theeastern city of Lahore, at onepoint having to put up with a

mischievous grandchild using awatch to reflect sunlight onto hisface."I think that is doable. I think thatit won't take long. We are not anti-American, we are part of thesystem, we have to work with theentire international community."Despite Gilani's gentler rhetoric,

    the gulf between the two nationsremains wide. U.S. officials havesaid the airstrikes have been them o s t s e r i o u s b l o w t o arelationship that has been battered

by a series of crises this year, exposing its brittleness each time.Pakistani officials have been

demanding more clarity in theirrelationship with the United Statesfor some time, angry over the CIApresence in the country and thecovert but routine drone strikesthat kill militants on its side of theborder.A new agreement, even a vague,

    nonbinding one, may be enough

to satisfy domestic critics thatPakistan has extracted somethingfrom Washington before agreeingto reopen the supply lines. The May 2 U.S. mission that

killed Osama bin Laden infuriatedthe army, which faced humiliationat home for failing to detect theU.S. raid and suspicion abroadafter the al Qaeda leader wasrevealed to have been hiding in anarmy town for five years. The Obama administration wants

continued engagement even asPakistan's refusal to attackmilitant sanctuaries along theborder over the last three yearshas fueled criticism in Congressthe country is a duplicitous allyunworthy of American aid.

Many U.S. officials regardPakistani co-operation as vital forpeace talks with Afghan insurgentleaders to succeed because manyof the leaders live in Pakistan andhave ties to its security forces. The country, home to 180 million

people, has nuclear weapons and ath r iv in g I s l a m i s t m i l i t a n tinsurgency of its own that isgiving support to al Qaedaoperatives. Containing that threatrequires good intelligence co-operation for several years tocome.Gilani also said Pakistan remains

committed to working withAfghanistan to bring insurgentleaders into talks with the

    government. That may offer somereassurance to internationall e a d e r s w h o d i s c u s s e dAfg h a n i s t a n ' s fu tu re a t aconference Monday in Bonn,Germany.Islamabad boycotted the Bonn

    conference because of las tm o n th ' s d e a d ly a i r s t r i k e s ,d i sa p p o in t i n g Afg h a n a n dWe s te rn l e a d e r s ."I think we have evolved somemechanisms, and we are ready to

co-operate," Gilani said, referringto meetings with Afghanistan'smilitary and intelligence chiefs ona framework for talks. "We arecommitted (to reconciliation),despite that we are not attending"the conference on Afghanistan, hesaid.Speaking in Bonn, U.S. Secretary

of State Hillary Rodham Clintonsaid it "was unfortunate thatPakistan didn't participate" butsaid she was encouraged byGilani's remarks, presumably to

the AP, that the U.S and Pakistanwill continue co-operation."I expect that Pakistan will beinvolved going forward and weexpect them to play a constructiverole," said Clinton. The civilian government that

Gilani heads is in many respectssubservient to the army, whichformulates Afghan policy. Gilaniis unlikely to say anything thatdoes not broadly reflect the

thinking of the army. This year's crises in Pakistan-

U.S. ties included an incident inw h i c h a n A m e r i c a n C I Acontractor shot and killed twoPakistanis on the street in Lahore. The previous disputes have beenpatched up, though at a cost ofdwindling trust and expectationson both sides.Pakistan, despite the fiercely anti-American rhetoric of its people, many of its lawmakers and --

increasingly after the NATOstrike -- its army, relies onWashington for military andcivilian aid to maintain someparity with its regional foe India,as well as diplomatic legitimacy. In Gilani's office, along with

photos of his children, there aretwo pictures of the prime ministerwith then-President George W.Bush in Washington. There's alsoa signed note from Bush in 2008

"Now he's trying to

fix it."In a charcoal gray suit with a

    7Curated News EditionEarth-like planet discovered in 'habitable'zone - USA Today(Top Stories - Google News)

    Submitted at 12/5/2011 3:31:30 PM

By Dan Vergano, USA TODAYUpdatedAstronomers on Monday reportedthe discovery of an Earth-likeplanet outside the solar systemwhose size and distance from itsown star put it in the "habitable"zone and make for a surfacetemperature perhaps averaging a

    balmy 72 degrees.NASA ARC/ JPLAn artist's conception of Kepler-

22b.The planet, Kepler 22b, about 2.4times wider than Earth, circles astar about 600 light years away, close by astronomical standards. The Kepler space telescopediscovery team announced thefind at a briefing at NASA's AmesResearch Center in Moffett Field,Calif.

"It is right smack in the middle ofthe habitable zone," Keplerscientist Natalie Batalha says.Launched in 2009, the $591million Kepler space telescopehas detected more than 2,000possible planets observed among

about 150,000 stars within 3,000light years of Earth along the"Orion spur" of our Milky Waygalaxy. Kepler 22b's discoverycaps a half-decade of astronomerssearching for a "Goldilocks"planet not too hot or not toocold to harbor oceans on itssurface, like Earth. Liquid wateris considered key for developmentof life."This is a phenomenal discovery

    in the course of human history,"says planet hunting pioneer GeoffMarcy of the University ofCalifornia-Berkeley, a Kepleri n v e s t i g a t o r . E u r o p e a nastronomers discovered the firstplanet confirmed orbit ing anearby star in 1995, spurring agold rush of planet discoveries,mostly jumbo planets the size ofJupiter or larger.Kepler 22b "is the smallest, most

    nearly Earth-size, planet ever

found in the lukewarm zonearound another sun where lifecould thrive."Kepler spotted the planet from

tiny dips in starlight caused bypartial eclipses, or transits, of theplanet in front of the star. It

travels on a 290-day orbit arounda sun-like star, dubbed Kepler22a, nearly as bright and warm asour own. Astronomer FrancescoPepe of Switzerland's Universityof Geneva, says he is "convincedthat the report will be solid andthe data impressive" from theKepler 22b discovery. Pepe is amember of a competing EuropeanSouthern Observatory planet-hunting team that announced an

Earth-sized planet on the edge ofanother star's habitable zone inSeptember. The transit detection method

    yields only a width and orbit timefor planets, instead of a weight.Preliminary telescope observationo f t h e p l a n e t ' s s t a r f o rgravitational wobbles induced onit by the planet indicate only thatKepler 22b cannot weigh morethan 36 times more than Earth."There is absolutely no doubt

about the reality of this planet,"Marcy says, given that the Keplerteam has detected three 7.9-hourdimmings of the star, reoccurringat 290-day crossings in front ofthe star."This discovery is rock solid,

even if the planet isn't," Marcysays. From early observations, the

Kepler astronomers cannot tellwhether Kepler 22b is a rockyworld, a water-covered world orsomething else, says team leaderWilliam Borucki of NASA'sAmes Research Center. Boruckisays observations show no signsof other planets in the star's solarsystem. Pepe estimates that the

world would weigh about 14times as much as Earth if it isbuilt the same way. Most likely, Marcy says, "this

planet is probably rocky with athick layer of water and gas, making it more like Neptune inour solar system."Among the more than 2,000

possible planets spotted by Keplerare 10 planets less than 2.4 timesas wide as Earth that linger in theocean-friendly "habitable zone"

    d is tances f rom thei r s tars ,awaiting confirmation. "(W)eHomo sapiens are straining ourreach into the universe to findplanets that remind us of home,"Marcy says by e-mail. "We area l m o s t t h e r e . " F o r m o r e

he says. "I don't want to discussthe deal until the papers getsigned because everyone else willget excited--and then we getscattered."

When pressed, Jackson flashes aknowing grin. I ask him whetherhe's investing in a small music-related startup. "Well, they'rereally well established companiesthat I'll end up being involved in,"he says. Like Spotify? "Those arethe kinds of guys I want to hangout with, down there in SiliconValley," Jackson answers coyly. He says he knows Parker butdeclines to go into any moredetail. But clearly he's impressed

by s t reaming serv ices l ikeSpotify, which he says, "are thefuture of music--the experiencewith Napster gave them theinsight--all the information [theyneeded]."Jackson ticks off characteristics

    that he learned from finding newtalent and producers in the musicindustry. It's not so differentl o o k i n g f o r s u c c e s s f u lentrepreneurs, he says. It boilsdown to four traits: quality ofm a t e r i a l , p e r f o r m a n c e ,

    appearance, and personality. Itwas those qualities that led him toB r i a n N o h e , f o u n d e r o f KonoAudio, which SMS Audioacquired in August to support its

    sound technology. "Ultimately thevision is not just a headphonecompany," says Nohe, now SMS'spresident. "I mean, 50 wants tocreate an audio company. Youwill see us move into laptops,s p e a k e r s , a n d h o m ee n t e r t a i n m e n t . "Jackson and Nohe say you might

expect them to partner withdevice makers like HP, but it'sSMS's technology (not to beconfused with the alternate name

for text messaging) that they feelwill help distinguish them fromcompetitors. Jackson is wellaware he's entering a saturatedmarket, introducing yet anotheroffering of celebrity-endorsedheadphones. Ironically it was 50Cent 's bosses, Dr. Dre andInterscope chairman JimmyIovine, who sparked the crazewith their line of Robert Brunner-designed Beats by Dr. Dreheadphones, from Monster, whichled to similar cross-branding deals

with Lady Gaga, Ludacris, P.Diddy, Justin Bieber, Daft Punk, and even Quincy Jones and MilesDavis. But Jackson believesSMS's wireless technology will

help it stand out--technology, headds, that's even impressed Dreand Iov ine. "I t uses Kleertechnology, which is a higherlevel of technology than what'spresented with Bluetooth," hesays. For his Sync headphones,f o r e x a m p l e , u p t o f o u rheadphones can be wirelesslysynced to one single source, enabling users to hear CD-qualitymusic as far as 50 feet away, be itfrom an iPhone or stereo system.

Jackson also looks forward to thechallenges of a competit ivemarketplace, especially with hismentor Dr. Dre in the mix. "[Dre]is so competit ive," he says."They're not offended by me[doing this]. This project allowsme to show you f rom myperspective what the best qualityis. [Beats by Dre] are all over theplace. It's just time for a newversion."

    H e ' s e x c i t e d a b o u t t h eheadphones project--not the first

time he's been charged up by anew venture. When 50 Centtweeted to h is 3 .8 mi l l ionfollowers about H&H Imports, acompany his G-Unit label owns

    3 0 ,0 0 0 ,0 0 0 sh a res o f , t h ec o m p a n y ' s s t o c k n e a r l yquadrupled, earning the rapper anestimated $8.7 million overnight.Trouble is, the self-promotion ranafoul of financial authorities. "Itell you that was a nightmare,"Jackson says, laughing. "I hadsome conversations with theSEC."Before the meeting draws to a

close, 50 and Nohe want me to tryout a pair of the new Sync

headphones. I slip on a pair, andwait for the music to come on.Moments later, a song beginsplaying, magically streaming intomy ears. It's "Disco Inferno." By50 Cent.Clearly he's still capable of some

    self-promotion.

(Photo: REUTERS / AndrewHarrer) Former MassachusettsGovernor Mitt Romney is seen atthe Republican presidential debateat Dartmouth College in Hanover,New Hampshire October 11,2011.

I think the reason that MittRomney hasnt caught fire is ifyou hear what he says today, itslikely to change tomorrow,Gibbs, former White House presssecretary, said on CBS Face theNation on Sunday.Calling Romney a political

gymnast of the highest order,Gibbs said, He will say virtuallyanything to get elected to anyoffice. One thing is certain in this

Republican primary, Gibbs added,If you dont like where MittRomney is today, just wait untiltomorrow. Its a little bit like theweather.Gibbs also criticized Romneys

r iv a l Ne wt Gin g r i c h , b u tacknowledged his recent surge innational and Iowa polls.I got to say I think a lot of peoplein inside the Beltway andoutside the Beltway woke uptoday to a very different politicalenvironment and one in whichNewt Gingrich is is very muchfor real, he said, adding, Again,I think theres great skepticism.Like us on Facebook

The Des Moines Registers newIowa Poll shows that Romneyssupport has dropped to 16 percent, even as former House SpeakerGingrich is leading with 25percent. Romney, from theMormon faith, has skipped eventsof Christian conservative voters inIowa while concentrating on NewHampshire.

    H o w e v e r , e v e n i n N e wHampshire the NBC News pollputs his support at 39 percent,

down from 45 percent in October, while Gingrichs support hassoared to 23 percent, up from just4 percent in October.

    N o w , a f t e r t h e e x i t o f Godfathers Pizza CEO Herman

Cain , announced Sa turday ,Gingrich can further surge in pollsby consolidating the non-Romneyvote.Romneys campaign has reacted

    to the criticism, saying Obamawants to divert voters attentiona w a y f r o m t h e i s s u e o f u n e m p l o y m e n t .President Obama has presidedover an unprecedented 34 straightmonths of 8 percent or higher

    unemployment, so its no wonderhis campaign is desperate todistract from his failed economicrecord, Romneys spokespersonAndrea Saul said in a statement.Saul said Obama didnt want toface Romney. Rather thanfocusing on job creation andh e lp in g t h e m id d le c l a s s ,P re s id e n t Ob a m a a n d h i sc a m p a ig n a re fo c u se d o na t t a c k in g Mi t t Ro m n e y .However, the condemnation by

Gibbs strengthens attacks byRomneys rival GOP candidateson his flip-flops.Republican candidate and former

Utah Gov. Jon Huntsmanscampaign has made two ads

highlighting inconsistencies inRomneys positions on issuesincluding abortion, the SecondAmendment, healthcare and taxes. One of the ads compares Romneyto a lubricated weather vane.I think when you are on toomany sides of the issues of theday, when you dont have thatcore, when theres that element oftrust out there I think thatbecomes a problem, and I think it

makes you unelectable againstBarack Obama, said Huntsman, who is also a Mormon, on NBCsMeet the Press last month.Be the first of thousands of
