Storylines1) No. 23/23 Liberty (9-1) will att empt to defend its FBC Mort-gage Cure Bowl title Saturday with a renewal of its rivalry against No. 9/11 Coastal Carolina (11-0, 8-0 Sun Belt).

    2) The former Big South Conference rivals will be meeting for the 15th time overall but for the fi rst time as FBS opponents and the fi rst time since 2016. The all-time head-to-head series is deadlocked at 7-7 and Liberty has outscored Coastal Carolina by nine total points (433-424) in those 14 contests.

    3) The Flames, who topped Georgia Southern 23-16 a year ago, are aming to become the fi rst two-time Cure Bowl champion.Liberty is seeking its fi rst-ever victory over an FBS Top 25 op-ponent. A win would also tie the Flames' single-season record of 10 wins, set in 2008.

    4) Liberty QB Malik Willis is the only FBS player to rank among the nation's top 20 for both passing TDs (20) and rushing TDs (10). Willis leads FBS QBs with a team-high 807 rushing yards.

    5) Liberty ranks No. 8 nationally with 252.1 rushing yards per game. The Flames are 13-0 under Hugh Freeze when outrush-ing their opponent, including 8-0 this season.

    6) The Liberty defense ranks among the nation's leaders in total yards allowed (No. 7, 301.2 yards/game). During their regular-season fi nale vs. UMass, the Flames pitched their fi rst shutout since 2016. They are allowing just 9.7 ppg over the last three outings.

MATCHUP NOTES“4 DOWNS” WITH THE CHANTICLEERS

Saturday will mark the fi rst time both teams have been nationally ranked in 15 all-time meet-ings between the Flames and Chanticleers. On nine previous occasions, either Liberty or Coastal Carolina were ranked (at the FCS level) at the time of the meeting, but not both. The

FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl will be the fi rst Top 25 matchup during bowl season this year.

Liberty (9-1) vs. Coastal Carolina (11-0) have the second-highest combined winning percentage (20-1, .952) this year of any bowl matchup, trail-ing only Alabama (11-0) vs. Notre Dame (10-1) in the College Football Playoff Semifi nal at the Rose Bowl Game (21-1, .955). The other College

Football Playoff Semifi nal participants, Clemson (10-1) and Ohio State (6-0), have a combined 16-1 record (.941). Liberty is 2-9 all-time when playing in Florida.

Liberty (FBC Cure Bowl), Nevada (Famous Ida-ho Potato Bowl) and Texas (Alamo Bowl) are the only three FBS teams to play in the same bowl game from 2019 to 2020. Liberty and Tex-as are looking to become the fi rst teams to win the same bowl in back-to-back years since Ap-

palachian State in the 2018 & 2019 New Orleans Bowl.

Liberty is playing its fi rst game in more than four weeks, as its scheduled visit to Coastal Carolina on Dec. 5 was cancelled. This is the fourth time in the Liberty-Coastal Carolina ri-valry that one of the two teams has entered the meeting with an undefeated record. The unde-

feated team is 2-1 in such matchups.

    LAST MEETING WITH COASTAL CAROLINA

    NOV. 17, 2016FCS NO. 16 COASTAL CAROLINA 42, LIBERTY 7CONWAY, S.C. (BROOKS STADIUM)

    • Coastal Carolina raced out to a 28-0 lead just over fi ve minutes into the second quarter on its way to its largest margin of victory ever against the Flames.

    • The Thursday night game on ESPNews marked Liberty's season fi nale and the Chanticleers' next-to-last FCS game.

    • Coastal Carolina racked up 318 yards on the ground while limiting the Flames to -23 rushing yards.

    • Liberty freshman WR Antonio Gandy-Golden caught four passes for a season-high 94 yards and the Flames' lone TD of the evening.

    A Liberty Win Would ...

    • Make the Flames the fi rst team ever to win two FBC Mort-gage Cure Bowl titles.

    • Enable the Flames to join Appalachian State as the only teams transitioning from FCS to FBS football ever to win a bowl game during each of their fi rst two seasons of full bowl eligibility.

    • Mark the Flames' fi rst-ever victory over an FBS Top 25 op-ponent (in their third try).

    • Match the program record for most victories in a season. The 2008 Flames fi nished 10-2.

    • Give the Flames an 8-7 edge in their all-time head-to-head series with Coastal Carolina.

    • Boost the Flames' all-time record against Sun Belt oppo-nents to 6-1, including a 3-1 mark under Hugh Freeze.

    • Snap Coastal Carolina's 12-game overall winning streak, the longest active streak among FBS teams.

    TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE

3: The 2020 season is Liberty's third as an FBS mem-ber, following 30 seasons of competition at the FCS (1-AA) level.

3: The 2019 Flames won the Cure Bowl title, be-coming the third team (also Appalachian State and Georgia Southern) to win a bowl game during their fi rst year of eligibility.

6: The 2018 Flames went 6-6, becoming the ninth team in NCAA history to win six or more games during its fi rst season of FBS competition.

8: Eight Flames have been selected in the NFL Draft. Most recently, Antonio Gandy-Golden was taken by Washington in the fourth round of the 2020 Draft.

    8: Liberty won eight Big South Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).

9: Hugh Freeze is Liberty's ninth head coach in pro-gram history.

    10: Liberty won a program-record 10 games in 2008, fi nishing at 10-2.

10: Ten Flames have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans.

14: Fourteen 2020 Flames (Benjamin Alexander, Aidan Alves, Brody Brumm, Anthony Butler, Jimmy Faulks, Chris Ferguson, Bryce Matt hews, Cooper McCaw, Peytt on Pickett , Thomas Sargeant, Tristan Schultz, Kevin Shaa, Cedric Stone & Matt Terrell) have completed bachelor's degrees and are cur-rently working toward master's degrees.

15: The Flames have posted a .500 or bett er record for a 15th consecutive season in 2020, going 111-61 since the start of the 2006 season.

    48: The 2020 campaign is Liberty’s 48th football season.

25,000: The seating capacity of Williams Stadium was expanded to 25,000 for the 2018 season. The Flames have welcomed 20,000+ fans to Williams Stadium seven times, including a stadium-record 22,551 for a Sept. 19, 2015 victory over Montana.

    LIBERTY FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS

3: QB Malik Willis is three touchdowns away from breaking Mike Brown's Liberty single-season record of most touchdowns responsible for (32), set in 2010.

4: K Alex Barbir is four extra points away from be-coming the fourth kicker in program history to make 50 or more extra points in a single season.

48: QB Malik Willis needs 48 rushing yards to set the Liberty single-season rushing record for quarter-backs. Mike Brown owns the current record, rushing for 854 yards in 2010.

94: The Flames have rushed for 2,521 yards this season for an average of 252.1 per game. They need 94 rushing yards to break the team single-season re-cord of 2,614 yards set in 2003. Liberty has rushed for more than 94 yards in each of its last 12 games, dating back to last season.

MILESTONE WATCH NATIONALLY-RANKED Liberty will be looking for its fi rst win over an FBS Top 25 team. The Flames lost 56-29 to No. 23 North Caroli-na on Aug. 30, 2014 and fell 24-0 to No. 22 Syracuse on Aug. 31, 2019.

Liberty is in the AP Top 25 for the seventh time this season. The Flames are 2-1 this year when playing as a Top 25 team.

#BEATCOASTALThis is as close of a rivalry as you will get, as both teams have won seven meetings, and the total score in the series is 433-424 in favor of Liberty. Twice (2005 and 2013), the Liberty-Coastal game has required multiple overtimes.

Three out of the last four meetings have been decided by three or fewer points. Most notably for Flames fans was a 15-14 win by Liberty at then FCS No. 1 Coastal Carolina in 2014. A game-ending blocked fi eld goal sent Liberty to the FCS Playoff s for the fi rst time in program history.

#BEATCOASTAL (PART 2)Liberty will be att empting to knock Coastal from the ranks of the unbeaten. Twice in the series, Coastal Carolina brought an unbeaten record into its meeting with the Flames.

The 6-0 Chanticleers prevailed 55-52 in two over-times in Lynchburg on Oct. 19, 2013, while the Flames knocked off the 11-0 Chanticleers by a 15-14 score on Nov. 22, 2014.

BEEN AWHILELiberty's last game was Nov. 27 against UMass. The 29-day hiatus between that game and the Cure Bowl is the longest span between games within a single season in program history.

Liberty’s 29 days in between games is the longest of any 2020 bowl team between its fi nal regular-season game and its bowl game. Georgia State will end a 28-day hiatus between games when it plays in the Lend-ingTree.com Bowl on Dec. 26, as its last game was Nov. 28.

CAMPING WORLD STADIUMLiberty is 1-6 all-time when playing at Camping World Stadium, with all of those contests coming against UCF between 1987-2002. The Flames' fi rst-ever triumph in Florida was a 7-6 win at UCF (the Knights' QB was Daunte Culpepper) on Oct. 14, 1995 inside Camping World Stadium, then known as the Florida Citrus Bowl.

NOT DOWN FOR LONGStarting on Nov. 30, 2019, Liberty has not trailed by more than seven points at any point in any game. That is a span of 12 games, the longest active streak of any FBS team. Alabama has the next longest streak in the nation, having never trailed by more than seven points in any of its last 11 games. Oklahoma follows with 10 games without trailing by more than seven points.

SECOND-YEAR SUCCESSLiberty Head Coach Hugh Freeze has led the Flames to bowl berths in each of his fi rst two seasons at the helm. Freeze is one of fi ve second-year FBS head coaches to lead his team to a bowl game in both 2019 and 2020, joining Miami's Manny Diaz, North Carolina's Mack Brown, Western Kentucky's Tyson Helton and Ohio State's Ryan Day.

Of that list, only Freeze (FBC Mortgage Cure Bowl), Helton (ServPro First Responder Bowl) and Brown (Military Bowl) won their bowl game last year, in their fi rst year of their current stint.

RENEWING ACQUAINTANCESLiberty has faced current Coastal Carolina Head Coach Jamey Chadwell four times on the gridiron, tak-ing on Chadwell's Charleston Southern Buccaneers each year from 2013-16.

The Flames defeated then No. 16 CSU 56-14 in the 2013 season fi nale. However, Chadwell's Buccaneers won each of the next three meetings against Liberty.

RENEWING ACQUAINTANCES (PART 2)Current Liberty redshirt senior safety Cedric Stone started at safety for Georgia State in a 31-21 win at Coastal Carolina, Oct. 12, 2019, and played in a 27-21 Panthers win on Oct. 7, 2017, also in Conway, S.C.

Current Liberty redshirt seniors Jimmy Faulks (one tackle) and Ralfs Rusins (one tackle, FR) both played in Liberty's season fi nale at Coastal Carolina in 2016, the last meeting to date between the Flames and Chanti-cleers.

MAKING CONNECTIONSCoastal Carolina WR coach Tony Washington was of-fensive quality control at ECU when current Liberty wide receiver D'Wayne Crawford was at ECU in 2018.

Liberty junior S Juawan Treadwell, Coastal Carolina junior RB Shermari Jones and Coastal Carolina soph-omore DE Wilt Gabe II all went to Independence Com-munity College.

Liberty junior DE Durrell Johnson (2018-19) and Coastal Carolina graduate SPUR Kendricks Gladney Jr. (2016-17) both played at ASA College.

Liberty redshirt senior safety Cedric Stone and Coast-al Carolina redshirt sophomore linebacker Justin Sco-la were teammates at Georgia State in 2018.

Liberty redshirt junior tight end Michael Bollinger and Coastal Carolina R-Jr. bandit Chris Evans both played at Boiling Springs High School in Boiling Springs, S.C.

Liberty redshirt sophomore defensive tackle Henry Chibueze and Coastal Carolina freshman WR Kyre Du-plessis both went to Woodbridge High School.

Liberty freshman wide receiver CJ Daniels, Coastal Carolina junior QB Fred Payton, redshirt sophomore running back Christian Malloy and freshman OL Tyler Wagner all went to Parkview High School.

8-1Willis is 8-1 as a collegiate starting quarterback, with all of his starts coming as a Liberty Flame. His fi rst collegiate start (Sept. 19 at Western Kentucky) did not come until his fourth year of college. Willis be-came the fi rst Liberty quarterback ever to win his fi rst seven starts.

Only four other FBS quarterbacks have passed for six TDs in a game this season: Ole Miss's Matt Corral, Memphis's Brady White, Florida's Kyle Trask and UNC's Sam Howell.

345 Passing YardsWillis threw for 345 yards during the Flames' Oct. 24 victory over Southern Miss, becoming the fi rst Liber-ty player not named Stephen Calvert with a 300-yard game since Josh Woodrum on Oct. 17, 2015 at Mon-mouth.

2 300-Yard Passing GamesWillis has thrown for 300 yards twice as a Flame, do-ing so versus Southern Miss on Oct. 24 and against Western Carolina on Nov. 14.

3 Rushing TDsWillis rushed for three touchdowns during his Liberty debut, Sept. 19 at Western Kentucky. He was the fi rst Flames QB with three rushing TDs in a single game since Glenn Inverso vs. Hampton on Sept. 1, 1979.

168 Rushing YardsWillis rushed for 168 yards during his Flames debut, Sept. 19 at Western Kentucky. It was the most in a single game by a quarterback in program history.

2 100-Yard Rushing GamesWillis's Liberty quarterback-record 168 rushing yards at Western Kentucky on Sept. 19 ranks No. 3 all-time for the Flames against an FBS opponent. He added a team-high 108 yards in a Nov. 7 win at Virgin-ia Tech.
