Commercial Recycling This service requires you to source separate Aluminum Cans, Quality Office Paper, and Corrugated Cardboard. These
three items will be picked up the first Wednesday of each month unless additional pickups have been requested through the Borough office. Aluminum cans and Quality Office Paper must be placed in separate sealed refuse bags, and Corrugated
Cardboard must be broken down and bundled together or enclose same in an enclosure such as a chicken wire coop or a storage enclosure to prevent the cardboard from blowing in the wind. All recyclable items for Curbside Collection must be placed out by 6:00 AM Wednesday morning if they are to be picked up by the Borough’s Public Works Department.
Please note that you can bring the above recyclables, as well as plastics (#1-#7), glass (clear and colored), and all other
paper products (phone books, magazines, shredded paper, junk mail/flyers, etc.), to our Public Works Recycling Center at 139 North St on Monday-Friday 6AM-3PM and Saturday 7AM-12PM.

Please help us to reduce the amount of waste being sent to the county incinerator! While it is the most beneficial to the environment to mulch your own grass and let it remain in your yard, we know that some borough residents prefer to pick up their grass clippings. In an effort to reduce waste being sent to the incinerator, Hanover Borough is now accepting grass clippings at the recycle yard at 139 North Street. Next time you bag your grass, bring it to the yard and let us compost it for you! Borough residents can bring grass clippings to our grass only container located at the borough recycle yard during normal operating hours.

Increasingly popular bathroom wipes—pre-moistened towelettes that are often advertised as flushable—are being blamed for creating clogs and backups in sewer systems around the U.S. Wastewater authorities say wipes may go down the toilet, but even many labeled “flushable” are not breaking down as they course through the sewer system. Stories about costly sewerage system clogs have multiplied as more disposable wipe products have hit the market in the past few years. Companies advertise their disposable wipes as “flushable” or “safe for sewer and septic systems”, but independent test have found otherwise. Because the wipes do not disintegrate easily or quickly, they clog sewage treatment equipment. A secondary problem with flushable wipes is that they are similar in function and appearance to wipe products that are especially to be disposed of in the trash rather than down the toilet. Baby wipes or facial wipes, for example, are not even marketed as “flushable” and may contain logos or notices on the packaging that warn consumers not to flush. However, consumers who have heard flushable wipes may simply assume that because no-flushable wipes look similar, they can be flushed. Both flushable and non-flushable wipes contributed to clogs in the sewerage system. Avoid flushing any type of wipe, “flushable” or otherwise down the toilet. This will prevent costly clogs and environmentally damaging overflows at your local sewage system. In fact, it would be best to avoid disposable wipes completely since they produce waste that should end up in a landfill, and more sustainable alternatives (such as your normal dissolves-quickly-in-water toilet paper made on unbleached recycled paper) exist. If you can’t let go of your wipes, make sure they are properly disposed of in the trash.

INEXPENSIVE COVERAGE FOR PEACE OF M ND
One of the most devastating events that a person or family can experience is fire in their home. Over the years, the Hanover & Penn Township Fire Departments have responded to many fires in homes that were being rented. In a large majority of these fires, the family did not have renter’s insurance. Some families mistakenly believed that their landlord’s insurance would cover their belongings. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case.
I took the time to speak to a couple of insurance representatives in the Hanover area to get information about renters insurance. In many cases, a policy that covers your personal property for up to $15,000 would cost in the neighborhood of $100-120.00 per year. Using a popular web-based insurance company, one would be able to obtain $30,000 coverage of personal property, $500,000 in personal liability, and $5,000 coverage for bodily injury for $35.35 down payment and $16.15 for 11 months for a total of $213.00 per year with a $250.00 deductible.
We urge all families who rent to obtain renters insurance. For the cost of less than a cell phone, they can have peace of mind knowing that should a fire strike, personal belongings can be replaced. We also urge those who own rental units to strongly encourage, if not require their tenants to obtain renters insurance.

On February 1st 2018, the Hanover Fire Department and Penn Township Department of Fire & Rescue were officially merged into one entity, known as Hanover Area Fire & Rescue. The merged Department operates under the Hanover Area Fire & Rescue Commission. This Commission consists of two representatives of Council of the Borough of Hanover, two representatives of the Board of Commissioners of Penn Township, one representative of Penn Township Volunteer Emergency Services, one representative of the Hanover Fire Department volunteer companies, and one local business person. On April 14th 2018, Penn Township Volunteer Emergency Services, Eagle Fire Company #2, and Clearview Fire Company #3, held their first meeting as a merged volunteer company; Hanover Area Volunteer Fire & Rescue. They intend to provide the volunteer component of one of the most progressive fire departments in the area. Coupling the 10-12 dependable volunteer responders with a career staff consisting of 30 firefighters, and some 40 Emergency Medical Service providers, Hanover Area Fire & Rescue will be providing the highest quality service to the citizen of Hanover Borough and Penn Township. As a new Department, we have embraced a philosophy of positive public relations. Look for our staff professionals to attend and participate in community events and visiting the community parks. In other news, The Greater Hanover Fire Museum has relocated from 241 N. Franklin Street to the site of the former Eagle Fire Station at 134 E. Hanover Street. Why are they important? During a rain event, water that comes off rooftops, lawns, and driveways drain into the stormsewer system. This eventually ends up in a nearby river, lake or stream. The runoff can pick up pesticides, fertilizers, pet waste and other pollutants causing harm to our water bodies. Rain gardens help prevent pollution from reaching our water bodies by temporarily storing runoff and allowing the water to infiltrate into the ground. Pollutants are filtered out naturally by the compost, soil and plant roots.

HANOVER RESIDENTS CARE ABOUT DOWNTOWN
Over 100 Hanover residents attended a public meeting on April 11, 2018, to show that they care about downtown Hanover. And the Hanover Borough Council is taking action to develop a plan. Those in attendance had an opportunity to have input on a plan for a future vision of Hanover’s downtown. Representatives from Simone Collins/Barton Loguidice, the firm hired by the Borough to head up the project, lead the residents in an interactive discussion about what is important and what they want to see included in the plan. The discussion was positive and productive. As residents left the meeting, they were energized and excited about what they heard. During the month of May, the project representatives will be meeting with local businesses and community organizations to get their input. They will also be meeting with the Borough council and will be holding a second public meeting on September 20, 2018, which will be held at Hanover’s Public Library. As shared at the meeting, this plan for the streetscape is the Hanover community’s plan. Public input is vital. Results of the discussion from the April 11
th
meeting will be placed on the borough’s website. You are encouraged to check it out. Please consider attending the September 20, 2018, 6:00 PM meeting. Join the excitement!
