Classical Manners for the Modern Youth

From the 1934 high-school textbook"Good Manners" used in "HouseholdScience" class of that day:

“Rule No.205. Cheerfulness. Do your bestandtry to improve. All work hasunpleasantfeatures. The boy or girl who isalwayslooking for a 'snap,' never gets aheadvery fast. Be happy, and like your work; acheerfulattitude does much to make you likeyour work, and to make your employer

likeyou.”

Ahhhhh…thefeeling of not having to go to school. Feels good right? Oh, what’s that youstillhave school? Well, that’s just one of the perks of being a collegestudent on break.

Overall, going to college was probably one of the better experiences in my life. Goingtocollege or not going to college – it is a big decision in many people’slives. Even trying tochoose the right college is tough. But, what many peopledon’t think about is that there is noright answer.

Aftergoing to school for twelve years and always looking for the correct ‘answer,”to me thatwas very difficult to not know if there was an answer – math, science, and classes lookingfor the right answer. It’s strange now there is nocheck box, no study guides, no Sparknotes, and certainly no one with all theanswers.

Thoughwe may or may not be students in schools anymore, there is this bigger schooloutthere – the school of life. Like the song from Bowling For Soupsays, ‘high school neverends.’ Like what Wesley says in The Princess Bride,‘Life is pain, highness. Anyone whotells you differently is sellingsomething.’ I have found a few ways to relieve the little pain thatI dohave.

First,a good group of friends is always necessary. I have to thank my friends fromevery partof my life for helping me get to where I am today. In fact, I wantto thank everyone I have meteven if we were not friends or just acquaintances.

Thesecond thing I have found is to start early, and that it is never too late tostart. Whetheryou have 100 years left to live or a 100 days, there is alwaystime for something new. Whenit comes down to it we are all people and we areall trying to make our way through life.

Thatsegues into my final idea: Respect. We all want it, but for some reason it isvery hard toget it. Every day you never know who you will meet or what youwill do, so take care to giveeveryone respect. Personally, I trynot to judge someone before I have had the chance tomeet them. Mosttimes I fail, but all I can do is go out and try again. This is where myglorioustrain of semi-wisdom stops.

Seriously,I do not know if any of this will help anyone, or if I am just giving dudadvise. Anyways I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your year. HappyHanukkah, Boxing Day,KWanzaa, Omisoka, Yule, Saturnalia, and Christmas.

Plagiarism and Cheating Admonishment. As the semester draws to a close, it isimportant forstudents to reflect on the benefits of an honest and honorable approach totheiracademic endeavors. There havebeen moments in the past at this time of year whenstudents have made moralcompromises stemming from a lack of preparedness orunhealthy ambitions whichhave resulted in academic and disciplinary consequences. Wewant to take a moment to remind studentsto be extra vigilant with regard to exercisingacademic integrity, and toencourage parents to consider addressing these issues at homebefore studentsfind themselves in the midst of temptation at school. Also, below is a briefdescription of theschool’s definition of plagiarism as well as the school policy on howsuchsituations are handled. Best wishes toall students as they strive to complete theircoursework in an exemplary and noblefashion.

Plagiarism, as defined by the English department, means presenting the work (ideas, words, phrasings, graphs, tables, images, etc.) of someone else as if it were your own. Anythoughts or language not your own and not common knowledge needs to have beenproperly cited (according to MLA format). A student must give credit to the originality ofothers and acknowledge an indebtedness whenever:

1. Directly quoting another person’s actual words, whether oral or written;2. Using another person’s ideas, opinions, or theories;3. Paraphrasing the words, ideas, opinions, or theories of others, whether oral or

written;4. Borrowing facts, statistics, or illustrative material; or5. Offering materials assembled or collected by others in the form of projects or

collections without acknowledgement. [i]

Cheating, copying, and plagiarism (presenting someone else’s words or ideas as thoughthey were your own) are serious offenses that violate the mutual trust that is essential to theeducational process. They will not be tolerated, excused, or overlooked. Students caughtcheating, copying, or plagiarizing will automatically fail the assignment and be referred to theadministration for disciplinary action.________________________________________[i] Definition and parameters of plagiarism derived from the Indiana University website.
