    THERMOCON 14

ThermoCon 14is the 4rdof ASHRAE GIKIs attempt to bring together the studentsfrom different Institutes of Pakistan. Ever since we began this endeavor we try toincorporate improvements so that the experience that our participants gain is unique. Wehave tried our level best to incorporate a degree of technicality in Thermocon 14. It isreminded that amongst the top of our objectives is to share our diverse experience andmake this platform a learning experience for all.

ThermoCon, consists of FOUR modules out of which you can participate in anythree or all four (see participation rules at the end). These are BRANIAC, INNOVATION,CAMPUS RUN and IGNITING CREATIVE ENERGY.Details of every module is given

    below.

    1 Braniac

The idea behind Braniac is to use full potential of your mental capabilities tounderstand a problem by a video. The problem may be simple enough but getting hold ofthe idea may not be. There is no prior preparation of this round, but everything would relyon one quick thinking and rationale reasoning, not to forget your mental presence.

This round will consist of TWO Parts.

    Part 1

This part will analyze your ability to understand a Problem. A small video of will beshown. Then each team will be provided with a MCQs paper to test their understanding. For example, a video showing mechanism of a machine part can be shown or video canbe about effects of CFCs on environment. The video will be self-explanatory andeverything asked will be from the video itself; no preparation will be needed for it.

    Part 2

This part will test your Observation Power and Memory. It will also be video basedsession and this video may not be linked to previous problem. This part will not be about

how much intelligent you are, but how well can you remember things. This skill will againbe tested by a paper of MCQs. For example, a video may be shown about alternativeenergy sources and question is asked that how many types of energy sources arediscussed in the video or how much efficient dry battery is as compared to solar cell asshown in video.

    What Do You Require?

All you require will be your Brain, Memo ry Powerand Speed!!!

scientific problem or may be everyday life scenario.

Stationary items will be provided to each team.

Each team will be given a single question paper for each part.

Video may be of 10-15 minutes and MCQs paper following it will be 15-20 minutes

    for both parts.

Use of any unfair means will lead to immediate disqualification.

    2 Innovation

The word Innovation is derived from a Latin word which means to renewor tochange. The event Innovation lives up to its name. The main aim of this event is toencourage aspiring engineers to use their brains intelligently and to innovate or changehousehold items into a new, exciting product. The participants will be hard pressed to notonly apply their theoretical engineering knowledge but also to utilize their common senseto its fullest extent. The participants will be provided with the basic building materials andwill be required to complete a given task. In order to do so, every team will be given equaltime. It is up to them to utilize their hour to the fullest and make sure that their result is asatisfactory one. After the time limit has lapsed the participants will compete against eachother to decide who amongst these bright engineers shines the brightest. The Judges willalso weigh in on the soundness and practicality of the design.

Last year the contestants were tasked to construct a Wind Turbine out of commonhousehold materials. So come join ASHRAE in exploring how innovative YOU reallyare!!!

    Required Level of Knowledge:

The main requirement for this event is COMMON SENSE!! You dont need to be agenius to understand and compete in this competition. A grasp on the basic

fundamentals of Physics (especially Kinematics and Dynamics) will however helptowards success.

    Rules and Regulations

ASHRAE GIKI Chapter will provide every team with a task just before the start of thecompetition at the venue

Every team will be provided with the same amount of time and resources to completetheir task.

Judging criteria and available time for the task assigned will also be announced beforethe competition.

The model will have to be completed only from the material provided by organizers.

Getting help from any other external sources (for example using mobile or internet) isstrictly prohibited.

Team completing the task in flying colors will win.

Decisions of the judges will be considered final and unchallengeable.

3 Campus RunThe theme of this competition is explained as, Team Work. Like sailors in a

tempest this event tests your stamina, your team work and your ability to react to unseensituations. Each team will be given a clue in the form of a multiple choice question. Theanswer to that question has to be chosen from the provided options. Each option leads toa specific destination/place [inside the GIKI campus]. A map will be provided that willassist those not familiar with the university campus locations. The task of each team willbe to answer the question, locate and reach their destination as soon as possible, wherethey will be directed to their next clue. The campus run is designed to be instructive, educational, and fun at the same time.

    What you need to know:

Questions will be multiple-choice-questions, with one correct answer

Questions will be simple but it is advised to have basic knowledge of basicPhysics and everyday chemistry including newton laws, kinematics, experimentalchemistry, chemical bonding and heat etc.

A map of GIKI Campus will be provided showing all important locations androutes

    Rules and Regulations

The starting point of all teams will be same where each Team Leader will begiven a question with several answering options. Each option pointing to aspecific location.

The team will have to use the site map given to find its correct destination.

All team members need to be together and ALL have to report at eachdestination before their answer can be considered.

    Fake/Null Locations may be included.

At that point, arrival time will be noted and a new clue pointing to nextdestination will be given.

A total of six or seven destinations will have to be located.

The team who first completes maximum number of correctly located destinationbefore other teams will be declared the winner of thermal tempest.

Decisions/Results announced by the authority will be considered Final and Non-Negotiable.

Use of any unfair means will lead to immediate disqualification.

ASHRAE GIKI Chapter reserves the right to modify the rules with or without

    4 Igniting Creative Energy (ICE)

Igniting Creative Energy (ICE) is a student contest promoting creativity and

environmental stewardship. ICE is unique in the realm of student contests due to a

commitment to acquiescence rather than restriction. Entries in the contest range from,

videos, essays, 3D models, presentations to anything else a student may be able to

    imagine and create.

A growing energy crisis and a national discussion about the future of our natural

resources are bringing the impact of our energy choices on the environment closer to

home. What can we, as individuals, do to make a difference?

That is the question the Igniting Creative Energy Challenge encourages teachers

in Pakistan to ask their students. Open to high school and college students, the

Challenge is an educational competition designed to motivate students to learn more

    about energy and the environment.

The Challenge to students is simple

Step 1 Learn how individuals own wise energy choices and environmental

stewardship can help reduce energy consumption and improve the communities in whichthey live.

Step 2 Ignite your creative energy to explore new and creative ways to make a

difference in the way you use energy.

Step 3Use your creative talents to communicate your energy ideas and actions to

    others.

Student entries must reflect the theme Energy Efficiencyand demonstrate an

understanding of what an individual, family or group can do to make a difference in their

home, school or community. Students are encouraged to express their ideas in any

creative form such as documented science projects, essays, artwork, photographs, video,

website projects, or a presentation providing an idea on how to combat the current

energy crisis of Pakistan. These ideas will be judged by the representatives from the

industry and ASHRAE Pakistan. Some of the best ideas will be selected by the industry

and Renewable and Alternative Energy Association of Pakistan (REAP) to be

implemented on a larger scale and those ideas will be rewarded handsomely
