HISTORICAL
The airport was founded in 1937 and over time came to be the busiest among Crete’s regional airports and the second busiest in Greece . It took its name from the world famous author Nikos Kazantzakis (1883-1957).
LOCATION
The airport is located on the outskirts of Heraklion ,5 km to the east, and covers an area of 2,781,000 square meters. It features two runways, an apron of 25 aircraft parking stands, one passenger terminal and a detached cargo building.

Open on a 24/7 basis all year round.
STATISTICS
Heraklion airport is the second busiest in passenger traffic and first in charter flights among all other Greek airports.It serves over 6,000,000 passengers and approximately 50,000 commercial aircraft movements per annum, which accounts to over 22 aircraft movements and over 2000 passengers per hour in the peak season. More than 60,000,000 passengers and 250,000 aircraft were handled safely during the period 2005-2015.The growth of almost 30 % in passenger traffic figures over the last decade reflects the significant role that Heraklion airport plays in promoting the Greek tourism product .
