NATAL ASTROLOGY 101

Astrology was conceived by the Babylonians in the Fifth Century BC. It was theBabylonians who invented the 360 wheel and who also devised a fixed or sidereal

zodiac of twelve 30 degree signs. They constructed a star catalogue which enabledthem to reduce several centuries of observations into step by step tables of motion forthe Sun, Moon and planets. With this information they were able to postulate significantpositions of the celestial bodies in signs of the zodiac. They observed celestialcircumstances of the eclipses of the Sun and Moon.

The Egyptians actually had no astrology but rather a devised ring of 36 asterisms(stars) that later became known as decans. These were mainly used to tell time atnight, and since they had individual names, they were considered to be either lucky or

unlucky. At some point it occurred to them that an asterism on the eastern horizonat the time a child was born gave an indication of whether its life would be lucky orunlucky.

In the second century B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt, the population was a mix of Egyptians,Jews and Greeks. It was here that the combined astrological ideas of the Babyloniansthat were known to the Jews, the Egyptian assessment of luck from the rising asterismand the Greek philosophical and religious concepts became the amalgam known as

horoscopic astrology. Hence forth they wrote treatises defining the rules of the new artand they prepared a set of astronomical tables referred to a fixed zodiac.

These treatises were issued under the names of Nechepso, Petosiris, Hermes, Abramand Aesculapius. None of these works have come down to us intact but only in partial

citations by later astrologers. However, from the outset, Greek was the principallanguage of astrology which is why the Greeks are credited with personalizingastrology. The word HOROSCOPE comes from the Greek meaning hour pointer.

A Nativity, Natus or Natal Chart has been likened to a snapshot of the Heavens at themoment an individual is born. It is a map of potential. From the Nativity an astrologercan glean information regarding an individualstalents, abilities, habits, hopes, andfears. A natal chart can show us how to grow and evolve and offers an explanation ofthe myriad ways we experience and use the energies in our charts to do so according toour own free will. There is no limitation in a Nativity-the only way anyone is limited is

by the choices they make according to that free will. An individual natal chart cannotbe duplicated within less than twenty-five thousand years.

Astrology works because we are all part of the Universe and the same force thatmoves the planets also moves us. We all follow the same cycles and patterns.

Astrology is based on three foundations:

The Law of Correspondences

This law states: As above, so below. As within, so without. As the Universe, so the

Soul.

The Law of Alchemy

This law states that all the energies are inside of us. If we deny them or suppress them,they will manifest outside of us. This law is about any lessons we dont approach on aconscious level and how they will manifest externally as forces that are difficult toignore. This law forces us to take personal responsibility for our actions and spiritualdignity. Since Western astrology is based on the premise of free will, with this law, wecan choose where to experience life lessons but that we cannot escape thosechallenges.

The Law of Beginnings

This law states that the beginning point of life contains the potential that will be fulfilledduring the life cycle and beyond.

Natal interpretation is the study of human life, birth, childhood, relationships during thecourse of life, self image and projected image, feelings, thought patterns, beliefs, andall of the energies any individual generates around him or her Self and the cause andeffect of those energies.

Esoteric astrologers believe that each individual choose their particular Nativity beforereincarnating into a lifetime just as they actually choose their parents and even theirname.

Astrology uses a geocentric view. This is an Earth centered view. . . In others words,we view the heavens from our station on Earth. From this position we see the Sun asrevolving around the earth. In reality, we know that this is not true of course and thatthe vantage point is really heliocentric where the earth and the other planets orbit theSun but, for the purposes of astrology, we are asked to view the heavens just as ourancient predecessors did from the earthly vantage point. For this reason, directions arethe opposite of how they normally would appear. So, bearing this concept in mind, thepath of the Suns circle around the earth is known as the ecliptic.

It takes the Sun one year to make a complete circle around the earth. The narrow bandof the Suns path is known as the Zodiac. Within the belt lies all the planets in our solarsystem with the exception of Pluto due to its unusually wide path AND the stars whichmake up the constellations. To the ancient observers, the stars made patterns thatlooked like animals so the belt became known as the contemporary "Zodiac" which

comes from the Greek word zoidiakos kylos meaning circle of animals. In other words,we borrowed the word Zodiac from the Greeks even though the Zodiac Signs are not allpurely animals. There are human signs, Gemini the Twins, Virgo the Virgin and Aquariusthe water bearer, a centaur representing Sagittarius, a mergoat representing Capricornand a set of scales representing Libra. It is interesting to note that the pictographrepresenting the scales of Libra is Ancient Egyptian symbol for the setting Sun whichwas regarded as the doorway between two worlds. The pictograph for Aquarius isloosely based on the Egyptian symbol for water.

The Zodiacal Circle consists of 360 degrees with each sign measuring 30 degrees. Everytwenty four hours, the Sun advances 1 degree in forward motion allowing each sign torise over the Eastern horizon while it keeps advancing over that period. So where to start? Basically an astrological chart is comprised of four basiccomponents: PLANETS, SIGNS HOUSES and ASPECTS. The planets are the Sun andMoon also known as the lights, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus,Neptune and Pluto. Astrologers do not care that Pluto has been demoted to dwarfplanet status. Aspects are the geometrical angles that the planets can make to one

another or to other points such as asteroids if an astrologer has chosen to includethem.

The twelve signs of the Zodiac are in order of precession: Aries, Taurus, Gemini,Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces. Inreality is important to note that there are actually two Zodiacs. The Zodiac signs ofastrology do not correspond to the constellations of the same name in astronomyalthough they both share some common mythological references.

The horoscope is depicted as a wheel which is divided into 360 degrees. It is thendivided again into twelve sections. These sections are known as Houses and are markedby cusps. The houses are calculated via whatever mathematical house system theastrologer is using. Most commonly this is either the Placidus or Koch system. Net sitestend mainly to use Placidus but if you talk to a pro they might lean towards the Kochsystem which is believed to be mathematically superior.

The entire degrees and minutes of each house is set by the starting calculation of theAscendant or rising sign. The houses work in polarity: 1 & 7; 2 & 8; 3 & 9; 4 & 10; 5 &11; 6 & 12. If you have a calculated chart youll notice that each of these sets will carrythe same degrees and minutes. Each house has specific meanings and there are plentyof them. Here are the general rule of thumb meanings:

The Houses have what is known as natural rulers Aries, 1; Taurus 2; Gemini 3;Cancer 4; Leo 5; Virgo 6; Libra 7; Scorpio 8; Sagittarius 9; Capricorn 10; Aquarius 11;Pisces 12.

When a chart is cast according to specific birth date these signs will appearon the cusps of Houses that they do not naturally rule. So, the meanings ofthe House become colored or influenced by the signs that occupy the cusps.

Each House is defined and separated from the other houses by a mathematicallycalculated degree and a sign of the Zodiac. The planets which are the most importantfacet of astrology will occupy certain signs at birth and according to their degree and

minute of the occupied sign will be posited in a House. Now since there are twelveHouses and only 10 planets there will always be Houses that are unoccupied. These areknown as VOID HOUSES. Many astrologers believe that these empty houses representareas where an individual doesnt need to put as much life focus as opposed to thehouses that carry planets.

Air signs such as Gemini, Libra and Aquarius place great importance upon havingenough knowledge to get things done in order to feel safe. They adhere to "put yourmoney where your mouth is."

Water signs such as Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are all philosophically spiritual and need

to satisfy that strong undercurrent in order to "feel" secure as well as "be" secure.These signs tend to hoard Manna or aimlessly give it away to the undeserving.

In this room we make decisions and establish priorities including everything fromchoosing our daily wardrobe to patterning our lives. We not only figure out what we aregoing to do but exactly how we are going to do it for the best possible results so themind, body and spirit work together harmoniously.

Aries: "Fashion Statement"... Ariens are thought to love the color red but truth beknown they are fond of all the "hot hues" found in a flame... white, orange, red, yellowand blue. Where did all these adjectives come from? They are some of the general adjectivesassociated with these signs. Often when a person takes an astrology course, theinstructor will make them keep a notebook of adjectives describing each sign as theylearn about them which are added to throughout the course.

Next, is the weight or lack of weight of the elements FIRE, EARTH, AIR, and WATER.Each sign falls into one of these categories. FIRE element is connected to Aries, Leo

and Sagittarius. These signs are animated and inspired. EARTH is connected to Taurus,Virgo and Capricorn. These signs are practical and material. AIR is connected to Gemini,Libra and Aquarius. These signs are intellectual and communicative. WATER isconnected to Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. These signs are emotional and psychic. Thesegroups are technically known as the TRIPLICITIES. Lets say a person has thisElemental count: Fire 3; Earth 7; Air 7; Water 0. Earth and Air have a high count. Fire isin the middle and Water is zilch.

The Astrologer would tell that person the following: You are a practical and efficient,hands-on person and can be relied on to take a common-sense approach to mostmatters. You are stubborn and often refuse to make changes in your life. You tend tostifle both your own and other people's enthusiasm (Earth strength). You tend to bephilosophical, preferring to view life from an intellectual perspective. You have a high

sense of fairness, and a logical thought process (Air strength). Your weakness lies inthe fact that you view emotions in a disparaging light. Crying or losing your cool in frontof other people would be a horrifying thought, let alone action, for you. You need tolearn to honor both your own and other people's feelings as you lack compassion(Water weakness).

Next are the modalities also called qualities. They are CARDINAL, FIXED and MUTABLE.Each one of these categories will contain 4 signs, one of each element. Cardinal signsare Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. They are action oriented and forceful. Fixedsigns are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. They are sensible and steadfast. TheMutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. They are changeable andadaptable. This grouping is also known as the QUADRUPLICITIES.

You can be relied on to come up with the goods as long as someone else has the initialideas. Your survival mechanisms are weak (Cardinal weakness).

Many astrologers also like to calculate what is known as the SIGN SIGNATURE. This

consists of planets in signs by element and quality count. The Sign Signature meaningis added to the meaning of a persons personality. Often it comes up the same sign asthe Sun sign but sometimes it does not.

Lets say a person is a Gemini Sun and he has the following planets in element count:

Fire 1; Earth 5; Air 3, Water 0. We see Earth is clearly the winner. Now lets look at thecount by modalities: Cardinal 1; Earth 5; Mutable 4. Mutable is clearly the winner. Nextwe put the combination together = Mutable Earth. If we go back and review our datewe see Capricorn is a Cardinal Earth sign; Taurus is a Fixed Earth sign and Virgo isMutable Earth sign. So this persons Sign S ignature is Virgo adding Virgoan qualities tothe personality. A good example of this is the late Bill Gates. He had a strong Scorpioinfluence in his chart including a Scorpio Sun but his Sign Signature was Leo. Thisaccounts for his flair for publicity and his ability to commend center stage.

Next is HOUSE weight. Which houses have planets and how many planets are in thosehouses? Lets say the count is: 1st 0; 2nd 0; 3rd 2; 4th 0; 5th 5; 6th 6; 7th 2; 8th 1;9th 1; 10th 0; 11th 0; 12th 0. The winners are the 5thand the 6thHouses. Theastrologer might say that life emphasis is on creative self expression, artistic pursuits,
