TAMING THE TONGUE

“For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.”

(James 3:2)

Anatomically the tongue is an important organ in the body that contains only muscle. It is situated in a cavity (mouth), and so it has a lot of freedom to move! However the muscle in the tongue is a “voluntary” muscle unlike the heart muscle and hence can be controlled by us. Warren Wiersbe very aptly calls the tongue “the world's smallest but largest troublemaker.”! Indeed the words that we speak are permanent and have the power to love or to destroy somebody. Just as it takes only a spark to start a forest fire, it takes just a few words to start a campaign of evil and hatred.

Jesus said, “What comes out of a man is what makes him unclean.” (Mk.7:20 NIV). Our meetings commence and end with a prayer. All our meetings and coming together is to bring good in others and in ourselves. The Psalmist says, “Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.” (Ps.34:13)

Speech is one of the highest functions and is one of the things that differentiate us from animals. We ought to use this gift to praise God and to comfort and joy to our fellow men. Paul teaches, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” (Col.4:6) Just as salt not only flavours, but prevents decay, so also our speech should be a blessing to others and be a purifying influence in this corrupt world order.

Prayer: “Sweetly echo the gospel call, wonderful words of life; offer pardon and peace to all, wonderful words of life; Jesus only Saviour, sanctify forever; Beautiful words, wonderful words, wonderful words of life.” Amen.

Dear friends,

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare invited inputs on the Draft National Health Policy 2015 from various stakeholders. The Christian healthcare network studied the policy critically and made suggestions to include principles to ensure affordable, rational, ethical, relevant and compassion-ate healthcare for all .

The previous National Health Policy framework was drafted in 1983 and 2003. The National Health Policy is the guiding principle towards developing the Five-year plans in the health sector.

Some of the provisions of the Draft National Health Policy 2015 are: To enact a National Health Rights Act to

make health a fundamental right, denial of the same to be punishable

To raise the public expenditure in health to 2.5 percent of GDP (Rs 3,800 per capita) from the present 1.2 percent of GDP (Rs 957 per capita)

To explore the creation of health cess on the lines of education cess

To ensure universal access to free drugs, diagnostics in the government hospital and bringing down medical expenses

Specific issues include improving maternal health, controlling infectious diseases and tackling the growing burden of non-communicable diseases.

Some of the concerns of the Draft National Health Policy 2015 are: Health will be recognized as a fundamen-

tal right through a National Health Rights Act only when three or more States “request” it. Since the health is a State subject, adoption by the respective States will be voluntary. The very objective of universal health coverage that depends on the adoption and implementation by States wil l be defeated in the absence of uniform adoption across India.

The draft policy, to meet the expenses, looks at introducing a complex system that relies largely on tax collection but also proposes tapping the services of not-for-profit organisations and trusts. This partnership will require properly framed memorandums of understanding with clear deliverables so that health care delivery is strengthened.

CMAI along with Christian Coalition for Health invited comments and suggestions from the Christian Healthcare network. Though the process of several consultation, the observations and recommendations were compiled and submitted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in February 2015.

XXVIII Workshopon

Hospital & Health Services Managementon 9-20 March 2015

atCMAI Headquarters, New Delhi

Dear friends,

Greetings to you all in the name of Jesus!

The cold winter months have set in here in north India. The Lord truly has been faithful to us, warming our souls in these changing times.

As you all are aware of our CARE India Project in Bihar which is gaining pace and momentum in the past few months. We were able to hire new staff for the same after rigorous rounds of interviews. Our aim is to select the best minds from across the county to make this project a huge success for the greater good for our society. Our calling that has resounded through the ages is to reach out to the most neglected and needy groups in our Indian population at large. It is my desire that many such like- minded individuals would continue to contribute to bring healing to the needy

A better, sooner, more convenient public health service will need more people who are prepared to go above and beyond the call of duty, who will find more innovative ways to work within financial constraints, help each other with heavy workloads and look for ways to perform the job more effectively. And they will do that if they feel engaged and empowered.

Empathy is an amazing virtue by which a medical practitioner who takes his or her profession seriously, with patients' precious lives in their hands, double checks their work, and delivers safe, professional, and holistic care. This attitude views nursing or the medical profession in general, not as a job or a task, but as a service to others to ensure the patient has the best quality of life possible. As part of the Christian walk let us continue to remember our Saviour's life on earth and seek to emulate the self-sacrificial love He showed to a dying world.

Herein is the challenge faced by the Christian nurse in the wake of the social stigma cast by the communal flames of recent times. Time has come and is just ripe for such professionals to move out of the comfort zones and serve the Lord with more dedication and courage.

Dear friends,

Last two months were hectic with preparation for the healing ministry week and Sunday with travel to Kottayam, Chennai, and Hyderabad. Nevertheless it was very satisfying trips. Visit to Kerala also gave me opportunity t o v i s i t E a s t K e r a l a d i o c e s e headquarters and bring CMAI message as they were having their annual convention. It gave me an opportunity to meet with about 30-40 pastors and briefly introduce the healing ministry and how pastors can effectively be involved.

The senate meetings were as usual. Very interesting to understand the issues and dynamics of theological education in India and what new direction the training should move on. It is also a time to meet many principals of theological colleges in India and know them and plan program with them in future. The healing ministry bible study material with poster was well accepted. I am getting reports of how churches and mission hospital celebrated. CMAI staff preached on the healing ministry Sunday in different parts of the country. Dr. Bimal Charles, General Secretary, CMAI preached at the Cathedral Church of Redemption CNI New Delhi and I preached in West Tambaram CSI Church Tami lNadu.

In Hyderabad, we had organised a one day seminar on healing ministry with the help of Rev. Israel David at Calvin i n s t i t u t e o f t h e o l o g y Ya c h r a m Hyderabad. We had 155 participants with faculty and students from the three bible Colleges in Hyderabad the Mennonite Bible College, and the Andhra Christian Theological college. Rev. Jeba singh Principal CIT led the devotion and worship followed by introduction. Dr. Jacob, Director CIT delivered the key note address and Rev. Dr. Jones Muthunayagam gave biblical hermeneutical exposition of the healing ministry fol lowed by my presentation on CMAI healing ministry for theological students challenging them to take it as a vocation in life. In the afternoon we had Dr. B. Wesley Director AMC challenged the participants with healing ministry from mission hospital perspective. The meeting came to a close with question answer time and Holy Communion service.

Thanks for all your support and prayers.

ABOUT ICMDA The International Christian Medical and Dental Association (ICMDA) connects Christians in medicine and dentistry all around the world, equipping them to live out their faith at work.

ICMDA is interdenominational and we welcome interaction with individuals or groups who are able to affirm our basis of belief.

ICMDA is a global movement uniting national Christian medical and dental organisations in over 60 countries, and is developing and supporting new movements in other places.

ICMDA seeks to encourage and equip Christian Medical and Dental Students and Graduates to grow to Christian maturity and live out their faith within their clinical practice and beyond.

Christians in medicine and dentistry take their inspiration from Christ, the Great Physician. The example of Jesus in humility washing his disciples' feet and wiping them with the towel wrapped around his waist is reflected in our logo.

'I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you' reminds all Christian doctors and dentists that 'no servant is greater than his master' John 13:15-16.

The aims of the Association to be carried out internationally, regionally and nationally shall be:

to provide National Christian Medical and Dental Organisations with a regular means of exchange of views, information and experiences in the fields of medicine and dentistry, particularly where these concern Christian faith and ethics;

to promote, and establish bonds of fellowship, friendship and co-operation amongst Christian medical and dental men and women throughout the world

to examine and test changes in medical and dental thought and action by the principles of the Basis of Membership;

to disseminate information concerning and to promote discussions of, problems which arise for Christians practicing medicine and dentistry

to support the special needs and activities of medical and dental students and junior graduates, thereby emphasising the value of their influence

to promote, encourage and support the work of Christian medical and dental missions throughout the world.

The XVI World Congress of International Christian Medical & Dental Association (ICMDA) will be held in Hyderabad 2018. This conference will be hosted jointly by Christian Medical Association of India (CMAI) and Evangelical Medical Fellowship of India (EMFI).

We are expecting over 1200 delegates from 85 nations. Details will follow, please include this as your prayer point.
