After enduring all the yersecutionsheaped upon the Saints they finally. reached the valley 0 the GreatSalt Lake in 1852. Two years later the Welch family moved to Cen-

. terville, and then north to Box Elder county. The late years of herlife Elizabeth spent in a little home near that of her son, John, inThree-Mile Creek, now Perry, Box Elder county, Utah where shepassed away Jan~ary 7, 1867.-Eva Den« Snow

Eliza Chapman was born March H, 1815, at Croydon, Cambridgeshire,England, the daughter of William Chapman and Mary Pentlon.. OnApril 13, 1836 she married Samllel GaJJ who was born in Whaddon,Cambridgeshire, England. Between the years of 1836 and 1854 theybecame the parents of nine. children, the last being twins. Her hus-band joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints October14, 1841, and on May 1, 1856 the family started for Utah to jointhe Saints in the valley of the mountains.

When they arrived at Iowa City they joined the belated hand.cart company of Captain James G. Willie. Eliza Chapman Gadd wasnot a member of the Church before she left England. She camewith her husband as a dutiful wife should when her husband decides tomove on. During the month of October, when winter had descendedupon this ill-fated company, Eliza lost her husband and three sons.Once she became snowbllnd and her eight year old daughter led herby the hand as she pulled the lowly cart mile after mile along the road.

On November 16, 1856, just one week after their arrival in SaltLake City Eliza Chapman was baptized. The family settled in Nephi andlived there for many years. She was set apart as a midwife and continuedin this capacity until the end of her days. After staying two weeks tohelp a family where she had delivered a baby, the husband andfather said to her: "Sister Gadd, I am sorry I haven't anything I canpay you for all you have done for us. The following was taken fromhis wirtings: "I emigrated from New York with my parents in theyear 1843 to Ohio. In 1845, I, with my father and family, moved toNauvoo, Illinois. My father, mother, and oldest brother, Samuel, diedthat same fall and left six little boys to shift for ourselves. I came toUtah in 1850 with Joseph Mecham."

Elizabeth Briggs was born December 22, 1799, in Walton Parish, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England. She was the daughter ofJohn Briggs and Ann Bower. After her marriage to Nicholas Welch, she continued her work as an agent for a manufacturer of fine Not-tingham lace, which was embroidered on fine bobbin net, in piecesof thirty yards in length and three quarters of a yard wide. One dayin the fall of 1841, as she was returning home, she noticed a 8rouPof people, and being curious to know what was going on she joinedthe crowd. A "little boy" she said was standing on a box near thecorner preaching. She was not religiously inclined, and even thoughher husband was a preacher, she had never given serious considerationto his work. She learned that this young man was an Elder in theMormon Church, Alfred Cardon by name, who, in spite of thefact that he looked very young and was small in stature, was abouttwenty-one years of age. What she heard impressed her deeply andafter the meeting was over she invited him to their home. Shortlyafter both husband and wife were bar.tized into the Church.

In the spring of 1842, the Iamilj' consisting of father, mother, one daughter and two sons, left their comfortable home in Englandto emigrate to America. During these bleaktimes the Miles parents died, leaving two small children, Jane aboutfour years of age and her two-year-brother John.
