Regulatory, technological, economicdiscontinuities drive change, create opportunitiesn Deregulation

• Puts downward pressure on prices/margins, threatensmarket share and custom loyalty, drives consolidation

• Opens possibilities for higher margin, faster growthunregulated businesses

n Technological innovation• Driving the integration of networks – telephony, internet,

control, data, video – and availability of persistent Internetconnections

n Market economics• Managed services model offers convenience, comfort, and

security to energy customers through tailored servicesgenerating new incremental revenue, reducing costs

The Darwinian model of managed services

n Eat or be eaten• Time to market determines market leadership and

perhaps survival as well• Energy companies need to become service providers –

offering addedvalue services, crossselling, miningcustomer assets – or else the competition will dine onyour market share

n Retaining customers, building loyalty• Regular contact with customers, consolidated billing,

provision of desired vs. mandatory services• Third parties, such as appliance manufacturers, lack such

contact/loyalty and value it highlyn Managed service model is a worldwide trend being

pioneered in Europe

 4

Own the meter, leverage the meter

n The infrastructure required for regulated meterreading and demand side management provides thefoundation for unregulated value added services• Meter data are essential for realtime load control within a

home and over a service district– Time of use, load profiles, load balancing

• Networked metering system provides data for energycompany and 3rd parties

– Theft reduction, connect/disconnect, long term energy pricing,consolidated billing, prepayment contracts

n Issues includes 3rd party access, ownership of data, separation of regulated and unregulated services, allocation of costs for services

The business proposition

n Improve return on yourcurrent business• Improve quality and reliability of

service• Decrease operating costs

n Build new business• Extract incremental revenue

through services• Decrease customer churn and

reduce “switching costs”

 6

Quotes from Echelon’s Utility Industry Survey

n “Bundling is key.  We are looking for a system that willenable us to bundle and better market higher marginproducts and services.”

n “We are interested in a [home automation] networkinfrastructure that has low startup costs and is scalablein the future.”

n “We want to give consumers the choice, but will offer tomanage cost and optimize usage for them.”

n “We are considering a number of options that will allowus to be intimately linked to our customers throughInternet connectivity.”

Perhaps even more interesting is the announcement of intelligent white goods on the market finally.  White goods, products like dish washers, refrigerators and washing machines, aretraditionally very costsensitive  and nottoointelligent appliances.

Merloni, Europe’s third largest white goods manufacturer, earlier this year announced a line ofintelligent LonWorksenabled white goods called Ariston Digital.

This is a very good example of how government regulations can dramatically affect productofferings and market trends.  In Italy, power usage to homes is limited to 1500 watts at anygiven time.  Merloni’s Ariston products communicate with each other over the power line tocollectively regulate the total power usage so that the homeowner doesn’t have to keepresetting the circuit breaker.

Of course the US doesn’t have this sort of regulation for homes, but Merloni’s strategy is astrong clue as to what we can eventually expect from the ongoing utility deregulationhappening in this country and the rest of the world.
