Leveraging IoT Technology for Building Smart Sanitation SolutionsMONITOR, OPERATE, AND ANALYZE WITH FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTIVE DATA COMMUNICATION
SUMMARY• Sanitation solutions need to capture data• Data must make the journey from sensor
to storage• The “Internet of Things” (IoT) revolution
offers us valuable tools
LESSONS LEARNED• Sanitation operations are significantly improved by data capture and
analysis• The IoT revolution continues to give us new tools we can leverage• Zigbee has become the short-range, low power communication
standard• AWS Greengrass can greatly simplify the capture and transmit problem• Tools such as AWS IoT analytics can assist organizations that need to
ingest, store, and analyze large quantities of data
CHALLENGE• Biomass Controls is developing the next generation of its kelv˚n software• Data is generated by field sensors• How to capture it locally and process for adaptive controls?• How to transmit information to permanent storage?• How to analyze data and generate meaningful information?• How not to spend a fortune developing custom software?
Jeff Wong is responsible for the company’s kelv°n information technology which includes sensors, microcontrollers, edge computing, cloud computing, and mobile applications. Biomass Controls is currently using IoT technology to update its solutions.

SENSORS• Temperature Resistance Detector (RTD), thermistor,
IC (semiconductor), thermocouple• Gas O2, CO, CO2, NOX, pollution, breathalyzer, smoke detection• Water Quality TOC, turbidity, PH, chlorine residual, conductivity, flow• Proximity capacitive, photoelectric, ultrasonic, weight• Pressure
WIRELESS COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY• WiFi high power needed, central router required• Bluetooth compatible with mobile phones, short range, high power• ZigBee open standard, adopted by Amazon, cheap, low transmission rates• Z-Wave proprietary, most secure• Thread adopted by Google/Nest, assumes cloud connectivity• Cellular fast data transmission, expensive
LOCAL PROCESSING AT THE EDGE OF THE NETWORK• Capture data locally• Respond locally to sensor events through adaptive controls• Use available IoT technology such AWS Greengrass• IoT tools can handle synchronizing data to the cloud
COMMUNICATION WITH THE CLOUD• Wifi • Cellular
